TENKO

Tenko was hunting. He had left a string of half eaten meals across his path, chattering happily to himself at the things he was finding. Birds, mice, even larger rodents had fallen to his teeth and claws. He ate till he was bored, knowing his family had already eaten that morning as they prowled these new woods. It was the perfect place for his family to move into, he decided with another grin.

The fox slunk through the undergrowth, watching the progress of a bird hop about. It was fully absorbed in its meal, Tenko's steps blending into the rustles of other creatures. Before he could snatch it though, a smaller creature grabbed it. The scent flooded over him. A cat! He smiled wide, he hadn't had cat in a while. He examined the cat as it buried the bird, soft fur, heavy paws, kitten cheeks. This would be a fun catch for his family. With a bark, he lunged out. The cat shrieked, its already long fur fluffing up as it backed up. Tenko knew though it was all a ruse, and continued to charge.

"Yes, run little one!" He crowed, giving chase as it fled through the forest. The cat was giving him a workout, he could feel it in his paws. They wove through the bushes, across rocks and around puddles. It was like the cat knew where obstacles would be before they reached them. Then they hit a line of scents, which was no matter for the fox. The cat seemed worried about it, whimpering about something as Tenko closed in.

Flamepaw was patrolling along the NightClan/TreeClan border, alone, again. 

Yes, he probably spent far too much time along this border, but he was hoping for a glimpse of Brindlepaw. The tom had been haunting his dreams recently. Flamepaw just hoped he was okay and his training was going well.

and that he thought about Flamepaw just as much as Flamepaw thought about him.

Then he heard the yowling and the crashing of undergrowth which always heralds a chase of some sort. Then he smelt the fear-scent of Brindlepaw and the scent of fox.

fox!

He saw Brindlepaw, being pursued by a fox that was larger than both of them, sprinting across the border.

A fox? In TreeClan territory? Not today. 

But Flamepaw was not stupid. He had no hope of going up against a fully-grown fox and expecting to survive. That just wouldn't happen. Foxes were too vicious, too bloodthirsty.

His eyes wide and his fur standing on end to make him appear more threatening to the intruder, Flamepaw managed to position himself between Brindlepaw and the fox. Motioning to the nearest tree, a sturdy one with relatively low hanging branches, with his tail, he yowled "Climb Brindlepaw, climb! I'll follow you up."

As the fox, once again, advanced, intent on its prey, Flamepaw yowled a battle-cry that he hoped would sound menacing. Claws unsheathed, he waited for the fox to accept the new 'prey', hoping it would give Brindlepaw a chance to escape up the tree unscathed. 

Flamepaw had the skill of Skyclan, so he wasn't worried in that moment about his climbing ability.

Brindlepaw's heart was in his ears, hammering in time with his frantic bounding. At first he had weaved through the undergrowth, using all his of tracking skills to fake out the fox. But, he was tiring. He wasn't made for running for so long, and even the tricks he thought would really make the fox stop were an easy leap or slowed it down through thorns that seemed to enrage the beast. It yowled at him, and his mantra of please starclan save me! sped up to outpace his heartbeat.

The grass beneath his paws gave way to unfamiliar territory, the scents he had relied on vanishing as quickly as an inhale. He had crossed in Treeclan's land! Dismay filled his stomach. He didn't want to get in trouble for trespassing! Then, he heard a voice. At first the young tom thought Starclan had heard his prayers, offering their wisdom to him. When he turned his head, a bright ginger coat met his sight. Flamepaw! "Climb Brindlepaw, climb! I'll follow you up." He yowled a reply, the words themselves lost in his fear. He had no idea how to climb a tree, but he was going to do it.

The fluffy tom launched himself at the bark, claws out and clinging to the surface. They were already filled with dirt from his run, but Brindlepaw seemed to gain enough traction to make it up to a safe distance. He flopped on the branch, chest heaving and tail so bushy it looked like a separate cat. His wide eyes watched Flamepaw below, "Flamepaw!" He cried, the situation so startling, he was unable to give advice, but pray that his friend would make it up the tree safely.
