But still we laugh, we cry, we fall, we get high,
just like we were kids, just like we were kids...

Fawn (cuz Darkcloud)
just like we were kids, just like we were kids...
Firebird dreamed she was chasing rabbits. Darkcloud was with her. Was there ever a time he wasn't with her? Side by side, they raced each other toward their prey on a carefree newleaf day. Their pelts were glossy and sleek. Their eyes were clear. Their movements were spry and easy, with no hint of pain. They were young again. It was just the two of them... they hadn't their kits yet. Even as she raced along with him, she realized it was a memory she dreamed.
And looking back, she realized he'd let her win. It had been subtle of him, but his longer strides should have easily outpaced her. Instead, slowly, he began to fall back, ever so slightly, enough to make it look like maybe he was tiring. She'd been so young, she'd believed it. Darkcloud had always been more reserved, counterpoint to her boundless energy, it wasn't a difficult thing to believe she might outlast him. But he'd allowed her the glory of the kill and then he'd offered one of his soft purrs, reserved just for her, and helped her carry back to camp the rabbit that was almost the same size as she was.
This time though, as she leaped for the rabbit in her dream-memory, she suddenly woke, head raising from her paws curiously at what could have woken her all of a sudden. She looked up to see Darkcloud standing there, waiting, expectant. She gazed up at him a moment longer, then glanced beside her. There he was. Still and silent. “Oh.” She looked up at him again and rose to her paws, leaving her own body behind as she stepped up to rub her cheek to his, “I didn't keep you waiting long, did I?”
He offered her that soft purr, and she purred back as he rasped his tongue between her ears, just once, “It was strange to be the one waiting for you, for once.”
She laughed, amber eyes sparkling with amusement, and love, as she gazed up at the tall tuxedo tom. He pointed with his nose and together they padded from the elders' den and out into camp. Just like her dream, her pain was gone, and she felt the same boundless energy she had in her youth. She ran ahead of him, “Slow slug!” But she came to sharp halt as she spotted a lone white figure, achingly familiar. Darkcloud came to stop beside her and touched his nose gently to her ear, and together they stepped forward, toward their daughter.
“Brightpool,” Darkcloud greeted the white she-cat, warmth in his tone, reserved for his children.
“You're up late,” Firebird mewed, “You're not on guard duty, are you?”
And when I'm feeling small you get me through it all,
just like we were kids, just like we were kids again.
just like we were kids, just like we were kids again.
