Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty Evening was a time for sharing tongues, and with the day’s duties over with, Smokestorm was looking forward to relaxing. First, she wanted to report to Hawkstar- there wasn’t much to report, but even the news that nothing was amiss was better than telling him nothing- he might be preoccupied with Frozenrain and his daughters, but he still needed to be kept informed about what was going on in his Clan.
So, after eating a quick meal, the she-cat rose to her paws and padded across to his den. She paused at the entrance and called to the tom, waiting only for him to invite her in before entering. “Good evening, Hawkstar. I thought I’d give you a report of the patrols that went out today- if you’re not too busy?”

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains The big tomcat had recently returned from the nursery, where he'd spent much of the early evening with Frozenrain and their two youngest kits. They'd been gathered just outside the entrance, with Hawkstar's tail acting as the she-kits' chosen prey, simply enjoying the company of family. Hawkstar was a little big for the space inside the nursery to be comfy when he was in there, and the last thing he wanted was to make the other queens uncomfortable. So, any time he did spend with his kits was done so outside. Of course, eventually the she-kits had tired themselves out, practically falling asleep on their paws.
After a few more moments with Frozenrain, he'd returned to his den, silently missing his mate's company in the large space. It truly was amazing how she could single-pawedly make him feel at home. With a quiet laugh to himself, the sandy brown tom began grooming his chest fur, helping it lay flat after the kit assault he'd recently endured, when a voice called out from the entrance. Immediately recognizing his deputy's voice, the StoneClan figurehead hauled his large frame into a sit before answering her warmly. "Smokestorm, of course, please come in." He rumbled contently.
Pale amber eyes watched as the younger she-cat ducked through the entrance, his sandy brown tail draped comfortably over his large paws. With a nod of his head, he invited his deputy to have a seat before him. "You seem to have adapted well to your new role, Smokestorm. It is truly a wonderful thing to observe. And I sincerely hope the life of a deputy is treating you fairly." He commented, a silent invitation for her to let him know if anything happened to be bothering her hidden behind his contented tone. With a flick of his ear, the big tom shifted his weight slightly.
"Now then, you had something to tell me concerning today's patrols?" He continued, the curious tilt of his head inviting her to speak. leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | Taxx | table by phoenix

Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty Entry granted, Smokestorm slipped through the entrance and settled in front of Hawkstar, tucking her tail loosely over her back paws and tipping her head back to meet the bigger tom’s gaze. He spoke first and her ears flicked, briefly skimming over the time since the ceremony. Of course there had been some disappointed when they had not been chosen, a few who gave her only the barest glimmer of respect- but only a few, and there had been no outright disputes. “Thank you, Hawkstar. I think it’s been going quite well- there truly isn’t much difference, except that more cats seem to listen to me now.”
She’d done her best to take up the responsibilities to the best of her ability- splitting the duties of hunting, patrolling and training Dustpaw with handling whatever problems the Clan faced in daily life. Since the Clan wasn’t falling apart since her being chosen, she must be doing something right.
A dip of her head as he asked after the patrols and Smokestorm gave a quick summary: “All’s well. The hunting is good and the fresh-kill pile is full. No Clans have crossed our borders, though the sun-high patrol did report the scent of badger, and a kill it made of a mouse, close to the Moss Meadow. It went over the border beyond Clan ground, and the scent’s faded since then, so the badger hasn’t been back. I’ve asked tonight’s guard to keep alert, though, just in case.” With easier hunting, it was unlikely that the badger would attempt to break into the camp, but the leafbare fox attack was still fresh, and it was always better to be on guard.

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains News of the badger troubled him. As Smokestorm relayed the information concerning its scent, stale as it may have been, his pale amber eyes narrowed worriedly. Smokestorm continued by outlining her precautions, and he allowed himself to relax slightly. Dipping his head in acknowledgement and gratitude, the big tom shifted his weight from one forepaw to the other. "Be sure to notify outgoing patrols headed to the area too. Ensure they are aware of the potential risk, and instruct them to look for any signs that it has re-entered StoneClan territory." He instructed, adding his own suggestion to her already laid-out plans.
It is likely Smokestorm would have come to the same conclusion on her own in the morning, but in Hawkstar's mind? It was always better to be overly cautious in such situations. The alternative had potential to cause insurmountable regrets. Another thought surface, and his flicked his tail. "Shifting to more uplifting thoughts, we should consider speaking with some of the current mentors. I'd be interested in learning how training is progressing, to discern whether we'll have any new warriors joining our ranks in the foreseeable future." He maw twitched into a warm smile.
"I'm certain you'll feel it once you perform your first ceremony, but... Naming a new warrior has always been my personal favorite duty as Clan leader." Idly, he wondered if she had any concerns about her current position. His last couple deputies certainly had. And he could relate, in a sense. Doubts had been heavy at the forefront of his mind during his short deputyship. He'd likely have approached Fallingstar concerning them eventually, had it not been for his rather sudden and unfortunate promotion. He hoped Smokestorm would eventually voice to him anything that might be pressing on her mind. When she feels ready, she will step forward. Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty Pricked ears heard Hawkstar’s instructions, and Smokestorm dipped her head in acknowledgement. “Of course,” she agreed, not speaking aloud that she would have done so on her own. She understood the tom’s apprehension about the danger, so clearly outlined with the recent attack that had wounded three of their Clan.
Her gaze did sharpen when Hawkstar mentioned speaking to the mentors of the older apprentices, to see if they were ready to become warriors. Her own was certainly ready, and she’d like to see him get his name soon. “It sounds like one of the better duties,” she purred in reply- one that both the leader and the apprentice enjoyed.
But not the only one. Smokestorm had tried hard to step up, to take care of duties when she needed to, to back up Hawkstar’s own orders. Doing her best, and yet…
“Why did you choose me as your deputy? There must have been better choices- some cat wider or more experienced. Why me?” Because, in most cases, being deputy was just a step away from being leader, and was she really ready for that? Easy enough, having Hawkstar to lean on when necessary- could she do it on her own? Deputy of StoneClan

Hawkstar may your dreams be larger than mountains Smokestorm's question caused an ear to flick from atop his head. For some time now, the aging leader wondered if someone would approach and question his choice. She wasn't entirely wrong; there were many cats in StoneClan with more experience, with more moons of respect beneath their paws. He always figured that eventually someone would bolster the courage to ask him 'Why Smokestorm'. It was intriguing to have Smokestorm be the one to do so. He chuckled softly, lifting his weight off one forepaw and flexing his claws idly. A kind smile met her as he looked up from the stretch, before he answered her.
"Because wisdom and experience go paw in paw. Wisdom is gained through experience, it can be learned. I can provide you the experience necessary to develop your wisdom. What I cannot teach you is a fierce determination to serve the Clan." He paused as he lowered his paw back to the sturdy ground below, pale amber eyes considering her a moment. "Ferocity and tenacity were the traits I saw in you when you joined Vipertail's attempted take-back of the Sun Stones." The gentleness behind his gaze indicated he did not hold her in contempt for her disobedience those moons ago; she'd learned her lesson.
"StoneClan had a wise, experienced deputy throughout Wolfclaw's time. And, when he was deputy, that was what StoneClan needed. Wolfclaw was a well known warrior, one I knew others would respect and follow. With Mistpetal, I had hoped her youth and warmth would play a part in easing some remaining tensions, but... You cannot teach a desire to lead in a cat who does not wish to support that responsibility upon their shoulders. I hold the blame for the short length of her deputyship." He'd understood Mistpetal's desire to step down, despite a small flicker of disappointment.
"I never doubted the need for youth, however. When I chose you, I chose you with the intent of providing StoneClan with someone who would grow with them. I wanted them to build respect with you, so that when my time comes and you take your place at StoneClan's head, they will have seen you step up to your role." He chuckled softly again. "There is nothing more difficult than stepping up to leadership after barely a pawful of moons as deputy, believe me. It was a rocky time, for both myself and StoneClan. My goal was never to put the Clan through that again."
He wondered if his words would help her feel more comfortable in her role. Hawkstar wanted her to know that he trusted her, and not once did he think he'd made the wrong decision in appointing her as deputy. Should she still hold some doubts, the StoneClan figurehead would spend the rest of his moons showing her those doubts were unfounded. leader of stoneclan and may you have the courage to scale their summits background image | harley king | Taxx | table by phoenix

Smokestorm This gal right here's gonna rule the world No, I won't sit still and look pretty Hawkstar didn't seem too surprised at her question; an ear tipped as she asked, but nothing more. She waited, shifting lightly from forepaw to forepaw, the motion stilling as he spoke in reply. She kept her gaze on him, not fixed but steady, as he began to explain his reasoning behind choosing her. Of course, that made sense- she had already been gaining experience in guiding- first from teaching Dustclaw and then from the duties expected of a deputy. Duties she had become familiar with while watching Wolfclaw and then Mistpetal, and duties which were now her role to fulfill. And really, they weren’t hard duties, but it had been more nerve-wracking at first to be nearly solely responsible for patrols- knowing that only Hawkstar and Sandblaze outranked her.
Her ears flicked back at the reminder of her attempt when she’d been younger, and the reaction she had got from Hawkstar and Wolfclaw. She’d resented it then- in her own mind, she’d done nothing wrong. Only now, with more time between now and then, and having had her own apprentice to look after, had she begun to realize that there was more to it than her own desire- had she realized the position it had put her leader in.
There was no lingering disapproval for her part in that, however, and Smokestorm spared a moment to be grateful before straightening. “It was a foolish attempt,” she acknowledged, and then wondered if she had ever apologized for it. She couldn’t remember. She’d only been annoyed that her leader had stopped her for trying to do something good for her Clan.
Another nod at Wolfclaw’s mention. The older tom had been a steady and steadfast presence in the Clan, and for moons, long before she’d even been born, he’d been taking care of the responsibilities of a deputy. Taking over from him had been… well, softened a bit, with Mistpetal’s short time as deputy giving the Clan a chance to adjust to the idea of a newer, younger deputy, and when she had cleared the position, Smokestorm had been chosen to fill the role.
The weight of Hawkstar’s expectations weighed on her- which, she felt, was kind of stupid. His hopes had been there whether she’d known about them or not, and it wasn’t like he was asking her to be perfect. Just to keep on as she was, to keep watching, and learning… Like, she realized, she was an apprentice all over again, except this time she wasn’t learning how to be a warrior, but how to be a leader. And Hawkstar was her mentor.
And just like she had had to prove herself worthy of being a warrior, now she had to prove herself worthy of leadership, of following in Hawkstar’s pawprints. “I’ll do my best,” she swore, a lash of her tail accenting her words. “Maybe it won’t be easy, but I can do it- just as you did.”
