Meadowpaw

12 Moons - She-Cat - StoneClan

Meadowpaw had been on patrols before but this was the first time in the harshness of leaf bare and  she was both equally sad and excited. Excited because she would be able to experience her home covered in a layer of snow and sad because for the first time in her life, she was encountering something new without Kestrelpaw by her side.

Yesterday she had been in the elder's den, insulating dens and generally checking up on all the older cats who used to tell her and her brother, sometimes even Sootpaw would tag along, stories as kits. The elder's were sweet and polite and all of them felt like grandparents to the young calico apprentice, but leaf bare was tough on them and it seemed a lot were coughing.

Worry for her clan mates had spurred her to visit her aunt Dawnblossom and Sandblaze in the medicine cat's den but they had gently shooed her away, telling her that in her first couple of moons, she had gotten the deadly disease known as greencough and was still an infection risk for the more life threatening redcough. 

Of course futher prodding on her part showed that the medicine cats were simply far to busy to answer her kit like questions and she went on her way in a huff, not so eager to tell her parents she had interupted the important job of the medicine cats for a few silly  questions. 

Shaking her head to clear her mind of these thoughts and making a mental note to appologise to the medicine cats later, Meadowpaw sat her haunches into the cold white snow of camp to await her mentor. 

It was not exactly fun sitting there, her short fur did not provide a great deal of protection from the icy bite of the snow and she could not help but think of her mother and father, snuggled up together in the warrior's den. A pang of want flowed through the young she cat, all she wanted to do was run and bury herself in Duskflower's calico fur and cry about how much she missed her brother but she had to be strong, not only for Kestrelpaw but also Sootpaw. 

The blind she cat was struggling, that didn't need eyes to be able to tell and Meadow found herself constantly checking up on the younger she cat, promising her that she will be just as great a warrior as those who could see. 

"If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try."

HERONDIVE

Blue eyes cracked open, squinting against the light filtering in through the warrior's den. Although she bore no physical wounds, her heart constricted in agony every morning she woke up to a cold space beside her. A good night's sleep had become elusive since her parents had confronted her concerning the nest she'd built with Falconstorm at StarClan's Claws. She hadn't seen him since then, hadn't been able to. Her parents had grown more vigilant since the discovery. Although they were relatively distracted now that she was officially an older sister to two she-kits, Eagletalon still proved problematic.

Her former mentor had evidently been privy to the information, and took it upon himself to check in. As she lay in her nest for a few moments longer, Herondive considered whether she would have traveled to StarClan's Claws without the seemingly constant supervision. Perhaps what hurt the most was how much it felt like it was over. Something in the back of her mind told her to move on, to forget about it. But her heart wailed more loudly than her head could ever hope to be.

Would he even be there if you did go?

The quiet thought barrelled into her like a badger on a rampage, and she inadvertently sucked in a sharp breath. Scrabbling to her paws as though she could avoid the thought by physically removing herself from where it had occurred, she half-stumbled half-ran from the warrior's den. Her stomach felt too hollow for her to consider eating just then, so the cream and white warrioress turned toward the camp entrance. Maybe a walk would clear her head. Maybe she could find something to occupy her for a little while. She told herself she should make an effort to visit Frozenrain and the new kits later in the day, but for now she wanted to be as far from them as she could.

It was then she noticed Meadowpaw seated at the camp entrance. Herondive's short coat fluffed in mild alarm, though it could easily be written off as the cold. She'd promised Meadowpaw yesterday that they would go on a walk of the territory. Picking up her paws and clearing her throat awkwardly, the mentor closed the distance between herself and her apprentice. "All.... All ready to go?" She asked, tail waving uncertainly behind her.

Meadowpaw relaxed upon her mentor's arrival and moved so that she no longer rested on the snow but something was off, something in her adopted cousins gaze told her something else, that Herondive was sad and immediately the calico apprentice, lay her tail on her mentor's back. " Are you alright Herondive, is something the matter?" she questioned. It did not take much to notice that Meadowpaw's father had been spending a lot of time checking up on his former apprentice and no matter how she pestered him, he never spoke of why.

It had to be serious because when Duskflower was questioned, she did not seem to know exactly why either, telling her kit that it was between Herondive and Eagletalon. " Daddy seems to spend so much time looking out for you, It makes me miss Kestrelpaw" she continued, speaking of her own sadness in hopes on encouraging her mentor to open up. 

" Even Sootpaw has me worried and you know how I feel about her" she added quickly, glancing at Herondive with a pointed look, her mentor may not of said anything directly to Meadowpaw oon the subject but it was clear that strong negetive emotions like jealousy made her uncomfortable. However it was not like Meadow was jealous of Sootpaw, just the other she cat was not good enough for the affections of the she cat's brother. Herondive may feel the same about her brother. 

"My name is Meadowkit!"

HERONDIVE

As the younger she-cat questioned her, the cream and white she-cat's head jerked up. With an awkward darting of her eyes, the StoneClan leader's daughter flattened her ears sheepishly as she attempted a stammered response. "N-No yeah, I'm good! Everything's.. Fine." Looking for a way out, Herondive's attention snapped to the camp entrance. "We should... Get moving. No sense in w-wasting daylight!" She tried to ignore the way her voice pitched awkwardly. What in StarClan's name was going on? It wasn't like her outings with Falconstorm were a new development. Yet, here she was, far closer to blowing her cover than she'd ever been.

Maybe it was because no one had ever really stopped to ask her if she was alright before.

Shoving the intruding thought to the back of her mind, the mentor set course for outside. Anywhere but under Meadowpaw's scrutinizing gaze. Which was absolutely ridiculous, because Meadowpaw was her apprentice. Dark Forest, the way Hawkstar viewed Eagletalon as a brother practically made Meadowpaw her younger cousin. Why, then, did she feel like Meadowpaw knew something that no one else could see? The thought sent a shiver down her spine. She was overreacting. Big time. And if it didn't stop? Well, she would end up saying something stupid.

For a while, Meadowpaw tried to continue asking questions. Questions to which Herondive gave small, rather unhelpful answers. She just wanted it to stop. Eventually, it seemed that Meadowpaw gave up, and they walked in silence, only pausing to remark the borders. It wasn't until they were skirting along the edge of the border with Sun Stones that Herondive started to feel... Bad. The recent season had been, for lack of a better word, mousedung for everyone. The fox attack on the nursery had been unexpected and frightening for all StoneClan. Not to mention that two young cats had been gravely injured.

Shifting course to head along the outer most border, the older she-cat slowed her pace to fall into step with Meadowpaw. With a slight clearing of her throat, Herondive's blue gaze flicked to her apprentice. "I'm sorry, I should have asked earlier, but.. How are you doing..?"

It seemed that Herondive was not in a answering mood as all of Meadowpaw's questions were met with resistance from the older she cat. What did she do wrong? Surely she had not overstepped her boundaries right? The little calico had little time to contemplate these dark thoughts were her mentor  spoke on something other than the borders they had been walking past everry so often. It mirrored Meadowpaw's earlier question exactly but this time it was directed at Meadowpaw herself. 

" I am fine I suppose, I miss Kestrelpaw and I'm worried that he will blame me for what happened to Sootpaw, that I wasn't there to save her" she admitted shyly. Of course it wasn't her fault, Meadowpaw could not control the fox that attacked the nusery but somehow, with Beetlekit losing a foot and Sootpaw losing her eyesight left Meadowpaw feeling guilty, guilty that she had hated Sootpaw from the moment she met her when something this aweful had happened. but how was a cat as young as she supposed to think about a clanmate going blind. 

She was sure she had annoyed Sandblaze and Aunt Dawnblossom enough with her questions on how help Sootpaw learn. It took her a moment to realise that she was not alone and smiled sheepishly at her mentor. " Why do they call it Starclan's Claw's?" she inquired softly, ears perking up as she awaited her answer. 

"If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try."
