I can feel you on my lips all the time But I just wanna feel you in my heart and on my mind The mornings had grown colder. Lotuswhisker awoke with the scent of frost and mist in the air, the ground cooling and the camp stream cooling down with it. The thin protective ferns and reeds would not be enough to keep out winter's bite for long. Gullswoop, ever dedicated to both her and their kits, would likely bring her more feathers and moss to keep their little family warm and strong this leafbare. Lotuswhisker stretched, leading her little flock of kits to the camp stream for a drink; their guard, Brookfall, followed at a sedate pace, respectful of giving the family privacy.
After Swankit's and Owlkit's little adventure in the river, Lotuswhisker had kept a sharp eye on each and every one of them. She did not trust them not to get themselves into trouble before their ceremonies, and it showed in the way she shadowed all three like a hawk. "Not too close," she chided, watching as they approached the stream to drink. It would be dangerous for a kit to fall in now of all times, and the brown-furred queen stood just a half-tail length behind, ready to right them if they stumbled or scoop them up if they fell in despite her preventative measures.
With the sunlight coming in, Lotuswhisker took advantage of the brightness to groom each kit, first trying to detangle Swankit's pretty tortoiseshell fluff (inherited from her grandfather, no doubt), then Owlkit's slightly neater coat, and finally to Falconkit's short clean pelt. Lotuswhisker's whiskers twitched as she smiled, finding the humor in a brief grooming session. It was just like Falconkit to be the easiest of the trio to manage. Whether it was his temperament or his grooming needs. "Almost done, Falconkit." She cooed, leaning in to wash his face and ears. He was old enough now to do it himself, but she felt like she needed to do something.
It wouldn't be long before they became apprentices, and these gentle family moments just wouldn't happen anymore.

` Gullswoop: Gullswoop was carrying back a large duck that he and his sisters Heronstrike and Bitterwing had taken down said duck and were bringing it home. Gullswoop was carrying the bulky fowl simply because he was tall enough for it not to drag on the ground. His sister talked behind him and once the re-entered camp dispirsed to tend to their other duties.
Gullswoop dropped the duck off at the fresh-kill pile but not before pulling a full wing off the creature. The feathers on the wings were better suited to line a nest. Stiffer then belly feathers, wing feathers allowed to hold the heat better.
The rest of the duck was left for whoever wanted to take the time to clean it before eating. Gullswoop had one goal in mind.
Heading toward the camp stream, the silver tabby smiled at the sight of his mate and kits. He placed the wing near his family. Before he walked toward Lotuswhisker and rubbed his head against her for a moment, a purr rumbling in his chest.
"How are you today?" He asked before realizing she was in the middle of grooming their son. Turning his attention toward his daughters he pulled the wing closer to him. "Who wants to help pluck feathers?" He meowed settling down for the task.

H is mother’s long, graceful strides were enough to make Falconkit jog next to her as they returned from the nearby creek for a drink. The morning mist rolled off of the water and the gentle crinkling of the current against pebbles briefly piqued his interest but he did not drink. One small dip of his toe into the water and the warmth of the nursery and his mother sounded much more inviting than drinking some icy river water. He bounded next to his mother, bouncing slightly and trailing behind his two fluffy siblings. Falconkit was the only one who took after his mother in his litter making him look like a fun-sized version Lotuswhister by comparison. Even at their young age his sisters were bigger than him through both fur and height. His dark features, large ears and big round eyes as compared to his skinny tail and little body made him look more like a fly than one of his father’s kids but Falconkit didn’t seem to mind how small he was, or even notice. The only thing that mattered to him was staying full and staying warm.
As Lotuswhisker pulled Falconkit in to bathe him he didn’t struggle. The almost immediate warmth of the nursery coated his body with a hug, the early morning hours and quick romp to the creek and back had already tired him out. He blinked slowly and provided little resistance to his mother’s strong tongue on his cheek and ears making his head bend forward and stay to the side as the rhythm of the bath soothed him halfway to sleep. He knew how to bathe himself but Falconkit knew there was no resisting Lotuswhisker’s bath, it would happen whether or not he wanted so he let himself relax when the great shadow of his father presented itself in the nursery doorway, blocking the last bit of draft emanating from outside.
The smell of duck was slight against the array of reeds and feathers within the nursery. Falconkit’s eyes opened ever-so-slightly as Gullswoop set the wing next to his mother and him. The little brown kit let a yawn escape him and he stepped away from his mother to investigate as his father motioned for his sisters to assist him.
“I can help,” Falconkit said, quietly, stretching his back legs as he walked. “Is it hard?” The kit had to pull his head back as far as possible in order to look his father in the face nearly tipping over in his drowsiness. Falconkit placed a small paw against the limb and grazed his pads and claws on a soft and multicolored feather with wonder.

I can feel you on my lips all the time But I just wanna feel you in my heart and on my mind The warmth that existed and was readily shown between her and Gullswoop was important. Lotuswhisker wanted her kits to be raised in as loving an environment as they could reasonably manage; the only way to chase away the shadows of RainClan's ugly past was to shed light and warmth on the new generation. Returning her mate's purr, she admired the duck he had returned with, both for the food it provided and the comfort it would give them later when they brought the feathers to their nests.
Soon enough, she would go back to the warriors' den, and would be able to curl beside Gullswoop once more. It was a bittersweet kind of anticipation; she did not want to part from her kits so soon, but Lotuswhisker was not the kind of parent who would be clingy. She was determined never to hold them back from their full potential, no matter how much the world could frighten her sometimes.
"Busy keeping our three from getting their little noses into trouble," Lotuswhisker purred a reply, gazing at her brood with a kind of reprimanding affection. Falconkit was typically well behaved, but Swankit and Owlkit, her clever little daughters, tended to let their curiosity get the better of them. She thanked StarClan it had not ended terribly. Lotuswhisker curled her tail neatly around her paws. "See if you can pick out the softest feathers for our nest, kits." That would give them something to do if they grew tired of plucking feathers. Her mouth watered at the imagined taste of the duck, but she stayed back to let Gullswoop have this teaching moment with their three. 48 Moons | Senior Warrior | RainClan Lotuswhisker Tags: Hellion neversky Notes: Rusty, sorry! WHAT'S THIS? WHAT'S THIS?After satisfying her thirst, Swankit pawed enthusiastically at the stream, splashing water up and into her face. Her earlier scare hadn't put her off the river, as long as it didn't go over her head. She shook her head briskly, scattering water droplets from her whiskers.
Feeling her mother's tongue against her fur quickly made her purr, twisting her head to butt against Lotuswhisker's forehead - even though it made cleaning her tangled fur a hassle. However, as soon as her mother pulled away, Swankit darted back to slapping at the water's surface.
Ears twitching, Swankit looked up as she heard her father's voice; eyes widening as she saw the prize he brought.Bounding over, Swankit scrambled over her brother, who had been admiring the feathers with wonder, and called out.
"Never fear, for I am here."
Biting down on the downy feathers, Swankit started yanking her head back and forth, wrenching several feathers free. Distracted from her task, Swankit jumped around - merrily swatting at the feathers as they drifted through the air.
THERE'S SOMETHING VERY WRONG

` Gullswoop: Gullswoop didn't bother to contain the joy that shown on his face. He chuckled slightly at Swankits ferocity over the feathers but not before nudging Falconkit closer. "Just follow what Swankit does, its really fun and for the betterment of your nest," He told him, encouraging his son with his words.
Owlkit joined her siblings in proximity but not in the actual task. She wasn't sure that her maw was needed. Her siblings seem to be handling it well. When Swankit began to pull at the downy feathers, Owlkit made a sort of chirp sound in protest.
"You need to pull the wing feathers first, the downy feathers won't keep the nest warm," She told her sister with a matter of fact tone. She had learned the little tidbit of information from one of the elders while she was sitting with them.
"Plus the soft down feathers will get messy quicker," She added in a similar tone.
Gullswoop, who had taken up a spot near his mate felt a louder chuckle tease his throat. Owlkit was clever but never had he seen a kit so forthcoming with knowledge and a ridged confidence with what she deemed was the 'correct way'. Deciding not to discourage her endeavor with telling Swankit and Falconkit anything, Gullswoop returned his attention to Lotuswhisker. It was his mate's turn for some gentle grooming.
Letting his tongue flick over the hard to reach places of her neck and shoulders, he let the purr build in him. "You are an amazing mother," He told her in the intimacy of watching their kits and spending time with his love.

His large, dark ears were turned back toward his mother as he listened to her instructions, and he nodded his head. “The softest. Okay,” He approached the duck a little closer but Swankit’s energetic bouncing interrupted his first mouthful of feathers. Falconkit jumped back slightly as Swankit began pulling feather after feather from the wing of the duck, scattering small puffs around her feet and into the air. He scowled at her, wanting to impress his father by pulling out the first, long feather. Alas, he was beaten to the punch, once again. Gullswoop offered further instruction in a soft voice, sliding Falconkit closer to the prey. If the idea was just for fun then maybe it wasn’t too serious of a task, Falconkit didn’t want to wreck any part of the bird but if his father wasn’t worried, Falconkit wasn’t worried.
With confidence he opened his small mouth once again to grip the bird, his side and bottom being repeatedly tapped and pushed against by his sister playing with the soft white feathers. His teeth gripped the material as he took a mouthful but the texture of the down tickled the roof of his mouth almost immediately and he coughed, releasing the white puffs and shaking his head, trying to relieve the itching. From behind him, the prim and pushy voice of Owlkit sounded, “the downy feathers won't keep the nest warm” and turned to glare at his other sister. “I wish you would have told me that before I got a mouthful,” he said as the feathers from Swankit landed on his head and back. One danced on his nose for a brief moment and he sneezed, falling onto his bottom.
Covered in the downy mess Falconkit turned to his parents. “Mooom, I don’t like this game!” The feathers moved as the air from his lungs pushed them away.

I can feel you on my lips all the time But I just wanna feel you in my heart and on my mind Lotuswhisker glowed with pride. Without parents or a mentor figure in her life anymore, Gullswoop's—and her sister Willowbreeze's—opinions now meant the world to her. She had always held them in high regard, but they had become the social backbone of Lotuswhisker's life. If her mate thought she was doing well in kit-raising, then she must have been doing something right.
"And you are a better mate and father than any cat deserves, Gullswoop." Lotuswhisker nuzzled his cheek, the moment of sweetness forced to be brief as their trio caught her attention.
Ah, her little Owlkit, who absorbed information like moss soaked in water. Then exuberant Swankit, who was doing her best to look like a fledgling bird hatched a season too early. Falconkit too, the little tom dismayed by the clingy downy feathers.
Lotuswhisker laughed, tickles by their antics. Lotuswhisker bent her head, rasping her tongue over Falconkit to brush the excess feathers away. "You are doing well. Perhaps you can try working as a team? Swankit can get the hard-to-reach feathers. Owlkit can supervise. Falconkit, you can hold the wing steady."
Having such a close relationship with her sister growing up, the brown queen wanted to foster that kind of wholesome kinship in her own litter. 48 Moons | Senior Warrior | RainClan Lotuswhisker
