Appleshade
Her paws ached so much, Appleshade was certain she would not be able to sleep. This turned out to be mostly the case, and even when the others had begun to doze off, exhausted from the journey, Appleshade was wide awake. She wasn't the only one; spotting Lichenfrost near the cave entrance, Appleshade gently detached herself from her makeshift nest between Skyfall's and Sprucefur's, and tiptoed (wincing all the while) to be near enough to her sister to whisper.
"May I sit?" Her soft voice flowed over the space between them, and when Lichenfrost did not protest, Appleshade sat down with a grimace twisting her pretty features, sore pads protesting the movement. For once, vain Appleshade who enjoyed her comforts and leisure, did not openly complain. She didn't want Lichenfrost to feel guilty; if there was one thing this trip had taught the silver-sorrel she-cat, it was that Lichenfrost blamed herself for so many things.
But that wasn't all she'd learned.
Of every cat in the Clan that could have gone with them, it was Fogsight who spoke up. Who asked. And it was Fogsight Lichenfrost had apologized to, her heart in her eyes and a lump in her throat. Appleshade's nerves had fluttered, realizing sparking through her like wildfire as the pieces lined up. Of all the cats who deserved to have someone special in their life who made their hearts leap and patter like rabbits, who made getting up each morning and getting on with Clan life seem a little less like a chore, Appleshade believed it to her soul that Lichenfrost deserved this. No matter how her sister wanted to say otherwise.
Appleshade smiled, warmth blossoming in her eyes, and a soft purr paving the way for her next words.
"She asked to come with us, you know. She really cares about you," Appleshade sighed dreamily, forever an admirer of love —in all its forms. "I think she needs you just as much as you need her."
