"There’s a lot of things you need to get across this universe. You know the thing you need most of all?" A more unlikely duo had ever been seen walking about NightClan than to see the new leader of the clan walking alongside a very sickly looking tom that seemed to be terrified of every shadow and sound around him. It also looked like the delicate seeming Apprentice was really angry if his animated words to Foxstar were of any indication. She had him really riled up; something she'd done on purpose. Still, they did make quite an unusual pair.
Foxstar was calm and confident as she walked, her gait easy and quiet even as her eyes portrayed mild amusement and surprise at the animated tom that walked with her. Deerpaw had been riled by the things said to him and he couldn't bring himself to really stop. How could she say the things she had? He knew he wasn't any good at anything. He was too small, too weak. He wasn't good enough to be any cat's Apprentice and here this she=cat was trying to tell him otherwise.
Foxstar, for her part, was hoping that by riling the young Apprentice at her side he'd show a side of himself that was rarely glimpsed to the Mentor that he wasn't aware he was about to meet. It would be good for Stormripple to see the same potential in Deerpaw that she had seen. So her words were a bit more provoking than normal for her. "So you'd rather just give up, is that it? Let others decide what you're future is? You're not even going to try, are you so much the coward Deerpaw?"
Her words had the desired effect and the dainty tom, so very much smaller than she was, jolted in front of her with a swift burst of speed before he blocked her path and held himself up to his full - if short - height. His stance was defensive and confident and held no hesitation as he locked eyes with his leader and rose up against her. "I'm different from others, you know that. I've always been different. Maybe StarClan hates me or maybe I'm just meant to walk a different path, I don't know. Regardless of if I want to be something for this clan I love how can I if my Mentor doesn't even believe in me?! I know I'm small and weak right now, but that doesn't mean I can't find a way to be a good Warrior for the clan! Even if I'm different and they always hate me, I'll never stop loving my clanmates and wanting to protect them. I..."
He stopped there, startled and embarrassed with himself. His stance faltered before he squeaked in surprise when the much larger frame of Foxstar moved forward to first lick him between his ears before she started purring as she snuggled against him briefly. He was confused but Foxstar was smiling. "And that, Deerpaw, is why NightClan will be honored to have you as a Warrior in its rank someday soon." He might be small now, but he'd grow. And if Stormripple couldn't' see w hat she had, Foxstar felt that she herself may take up the challenge of helping Deerpaw to see his true worth.

STORMRIPPLE tell me that you love me Even if it's fake Stormripple had just finished grooming his pelt when Foxstar told him that she had someone he wanted to meet. Curious as ever when singled out by his leader, Stormripple agreed and stood near the entrance of the warrior's den to be eaiser to find. His mind started to wander as if often did when he had nothing to do. Thoughts of what Foxstar might be planning came forth and Stormripple decided to focus on them. Perhaps she was planning on having him work on a special project or rebuild some part of the Camp. It didn't work he wanted to have but he'd do just about anything to gain the approval of Foxstar even if that meant doing busy work within the camp. Flicking his tail back and forth as he waited. It was starting to get to him, despite the fact it had only been a few minutes, he had never been a patient tom. But it seemed it didn't need to wait much longer. He spotted Foxstar's fur and then noticed the tom walking beside her and instantly recognized it as Deerpaw, his former mentor's son. Still unsure of why Foxstar was bringing him over, Stormripple waited and tried to be patient about it until it happened. Deerpaw stepped in front of Foxstar and gave a very passionate speech about himself and his feelings toward NightClan. Watching from the warrior den entrance, Stormripple let slip a purr of a laugh. Even if he was named Deerpaw and looked almost too leggy for his own good, Stormripple instantly admired the fire within him. It took a lot of courage to stand before the leader of NightClan and speak so boldly. Even Stormripple knew he wouldn't have done such a thing if he had been in the same situation. "Is this who I am waiting to meet?" Stormripple asked as he took a few steps forward to stand closer to the other two cat, a glimmer in his eye. "Nice to finally meet you Deerpaw, I know your father and I look forward to getting to know you," He told him with a faint hint of teeth with his handsome smile. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

"There’s a lot of things you need to get across this universe. You know the thing you need most of all?" Foxstar turned as she was greeted by the very tom she'd been thinking about. She approached Stormripple and offered him a warm purr in greeting as well as an affirmative to his query. "Yes this was why I asked you to meet me here. Deerpaw, this is Stormripple." She couldn't suppress a chuckle when the tom in question immediately jumped straight up in surprise; having not realized another was behind them.
Poor Deerpaw squeaked out a sound before turning around to face the cat that had spoken. Almost immediately his brown eyes went wide and his fur bristled up. He knew who this cat was. "I remember you! My father was your Mentor at one point." His gaze closed down and went cautious. What purpose could Foxstar have in bringing this cat here? Stormripple was everything he wasn't, and not in a good way. He was vain and self-centered, and seemed to always need others to look at him to feel good about himself.
Then he remembered he was still before the leader of NightClan and he seemed to shrink into himself again, his voice this time timid and gently soft instead of the stronger tones he used before. "I um...I mean...nevermind."He dropped his gaze from the older cats and stared at his paws; even the nuzzle from Foxstar not enough to make him confident enough to speak out again.
Foxstar sighed; knowing what she was about to do would upset Deerpaw, but also knowing it would be good for both of them. "Let me be clear, I brought both of you here for a reason. Stormripple, I want you to Mentor Deerpaw. I think he could learn much from you, and I know there is plenty of things he can teach you as well. Learn from one another, and you'll both be stronger for it." She knew Stormripple hid much of his true self behind insecurities about his worth and Deerpaw tended to see things others didn't. The young tom's insight may help his Mentor accept it in himself. In return, maybe Stormripple could help Deerpaw become more secure in himself and his place in the clan. That was her plan at least.
Deerpaw immediately puffed up again, tail straight out, and his head came up to glower at Foxstar. His fire was back again. "Excuse me, you want me to what?!" His tone was full of surprise and disbelief. Had Foxstar gone crazy?!

STORMRIPPLE tell me that you love me Even if it's fake As the introduction was made, Stormripple dipped his head in greeting. From what he could remember about Deerpaw, his mentored talked vaguely about the younger cat being sickly and weak. Stormripple didn't think that the case considers Deerpaw was up and walking. While it was noticeable that Deerpaw was on the scrawny side Stormripple considered it better then sick in a nest elsewhere. When Deerpaw said he knew him, Stormripple smiled and dipped his head again. "I hope you only know the good things," He replied with a playful lit to his words. Eyes sparkling, pretty and blue. His tail swishing back and forth. It wasn't that he was showing off but then again Stormripple wasn't always aware he was doing it. That was how second nature it was. Hearing Foxstar's words had Stormripple's ears tilting forward. The chance to mentor a cat was an honor! He looked forward to it. Another chance to prove he was worthy to stay in NightClan but before he could be excited Deerpaw spoke. His words weren't what he expected. Shouldn't Deerpaw be excited to have a mentor like him? Confusion flickered in his eyes but he blinked a few times to push it away. "It will be fun, I'll teach you all I know and you will be a warrior in no time," Stormripple told him stepping forward to offer a respectful nudge as all mentors did to their apprentices during ceremonies, except this was different but that didn't bother Stormripple. It was to Foxstar's greatest surprise and amusement that Deerpaw bristled up when his newly named Mentor came forward to offer him a gentle nudge as was his right. The underweight Apprentice looked so much like a puffed up duckling she was barely able to contain her amused laughter watching him get riled up. It was a surprise considering how mild he normally was, and Foxstar had to wonder what exactly it was that set Deerpaw off about Stormripple. The younger tom looked just beside himself with unhappiness and outright dislike and she wondered what had been said about Stormripple to make the sweet tom act that way. She was watching the interactions carefully as she tried to figure out just what was going on in the timid tom's mind. He always seemed so sad so why was he upset about being given another Mentor to continue his training? It didn't make sense. She supposed she could ask him, and as she draped her fluffy tail along his back, she did just that. "Deerpaw, what is the trouble here? Clearly something about this situation is bothering you, won't you tell us what that is? Stormripple is more than capable of teaching you, I do assure you. I hope that's not the issue here."Deerpaw was at a loss for a long moment, his brown eyes going wide and his tail sticking straight up. Was she serious?! How could she not know what the problem here was? To give him to a tom that his own father described as flighty and much to concerned about what others thought of him; how could she think this was going to be a good thing? He snorted, feeling once more as if StarClan must have it out for him to put him into these sorts of situations. It didn't help that his eyes kept straying to the handsome tom - and no he did not just think the idiot was handsome, nope - or that his previous Mentor's words still echoed in his ears. He wanted to be useful to his clan, but he really didn't believe this tom was the one to do so for him. How could he explain this to Foxstar? He had no words. -- Tags | HellionNotes | Poor Deerpaw.

STORMRIPPLE tell me that you love me Even if it's fake Stormripple wasn't blind to Deerpaw's reaction but he did his best not to let it show on his own features. Perhaps like the rest of NightClan, Deerpaw saw him as less than. The harsh realitiy that it was likely true had Stormripple's chest prickle with hurt. He didn't want another cat to look at him and dislike him just because he was loner-born. Trying his hardest to keep his eyes free of emotion, his tail flicked as he waited for Deerpaw's reaction. When his new apprentice made no such effort to reply, a frown appeared on Stormripple's features. "If you prefer me not to be your mentor please speak now," Stomripple told him, pressing the issue. Internally Stormripple was preparing a variety of quick and simple response. In his head, it could go one of three ways. Deerpaw would say disregard both questions and accept his mentorship and the two would have a rocky relationship, the easiest option. The second would be Deerpaw would express some mediocre excuse why Stormripple was a poor choice but Foxstar would keep them as mentor and apprentice. That option wasn't ideal but Stormripple could adjust. The last was by far the worst and created a mountain of dread in his heart. Deerpaw could confess some amount of hatred and Foxstar would choose to take away Stormripple's chance of mentoring in favor of keeping Deerpaw happy. It would leave Stormripple with another reminder why he wasn't good enough to be in NightClan. It would add yet another crack to his already shattered glass heart. MADE BY VEL OF GS + ADOX 2.0

Foxstar stayed out of the way of the confrontation she could feel brewing between the pair of toms and decided to wait and see how things played out. It really was very rare for Deerpaw to be so riled by anything she wanted to see what he would do. Deerpaw, for his part, straightened his body out slowly and turned to face the silvery tom before him. Brown eyes looked hard at the tom that wanted to Mentor him and he saw the hesitation and preparation for bad things. This was ridiculous! It went against his nature to be cruel, but some things needed to be said. So the words came out of him before he could sensor them. "Stop looking at me like I'm about to end your existence or something. And before you go thinking things that aren't true, my general sense of reluctance has nothing to do with you being loner born. I could care less about that, I mean look at me who am I to judge. I'm so weak no other Mentor wanted me." He was fairly vibrating with his own distress now and he just had to get it all out before it overwhelmed him. How could this tom think to make Deerpaw a Warrior when he was barely one himself? How could he expect to teach him confidence when he had so little opinion of himself that was as anyone worthy? Everything he'd heard about Stormripple painted him as flighty and self-centered; two traits that had never sat well with Deerpaw. Could this tom be considerate of the feelings of others if they ran opposing to his own desires? If not, he didn't want anything to do with him. Feeling bold, Deerpaw took that step to clear the space between them; his nose touching Stormripple's to show his reluctant acceptance of Foxstar's words. How could he tell her no, after all? He wanted so many things, and his desires warred with themselves inside him. He wanted to be heard, and he wanted not to have a Mentor that cared about himself above all others. He wanted to learn from a Warrior that cared about the Clan, not some half-baked fool that only StarClan knew how he'd managed to survive this far. The thought felt cruel and unlike him and Deerpaw sighed; taking a single step back so he could look up into the eyes of the one that would be his Mentor. His for held an edge to it, but it was also tired and resigned. "Look, let's clear this up between us now. This Clan and all those in it are everything to me. Even if they hate me and call me worthless I will protect them all to my last breath. That's the sort of Warrior I want to be. So tell me then, if you would, what does this clan mean to you? I've heard many things about you, Stormripple, and not all of them were good. I'd rather hear it from you and make my own judgement, so I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt. I just...need to know that one thing."Because he refused, completely and absolutely, to follow a Mentor that couldn't put his clan before his own desires. He wouldn't. If his father was correct about this tom...well he'd ask Foxstar to find someone else. Even still, his delicate form was beginning to shake as nerves finally overtook his sense of indignation. He was beginning to feel self-conscious, his large ears twitching back and forth as he fought to hold the gaze of the Warrior barely older than him. He could do this. Foxstar looked at the small Apprentice in quiet shock at his passionate words. Just what had Deerpaw been through these last few moons to make him behave like this? She could tell he was losing his nerve and becoming uncertain of himself and the situation. He hadn't been hateful towards Stormripple, but he wanted to know the other tom's opinion of their clan. Deerpaw wanted so badly to be useful, but if the tom Foxstar thought to Mentor him couldn't be with him one hundred percent, the little tom didn't seem to want him. It was fair, she supposed, but she was still surprised. She wasn't sure how Stormripple would handle the passionate little tom before him though. -- Tags | Hellion

STORMRIPPLE tell me that you love me Even if it's fake With ears tucked back Stormripple fought the urge to step away from his new apprentice. The outburst startled him but the silve tom made an effort to hide his reaction. The last thing he wanted was to appear unable to handle Deerpaw. Listening to each word falling from the young cat, Stormripple felt his chest ache for him. It hadn't ever crossed his mind that Deerpaw might be struggling with his own setbacks. Guilt formed in Sormripple's belly as each word was understood. How was he going to explain to Deerpaw that he didn't care if he was considered weak? All Stormripple wanted was any sign of respect, a welcoming tone in a Clanmates voice. The slight change from self-deprecation came as a surprise to Stormripple. That was reflected in the twitch of his tucked ears, slowly allowing them to pitch forward. Deerpaw had a series of questions that were important but in all truth, Stormripple was exhausted of having to explain himself all the time. Sighing his gaze went to the camp floor. Would those questions always be asked of him? It hated to admit that it hurt that Deerpaw had taken the word of their clanmates. Even if he was being offered the benefit of the doubt, the pain still dug in deep. A pause hung between them for a brief moment that seemed to last a lifetime. Stormripple slowly inhaled as he spoke his reply. ". I will not defend myself to you. NightClan is the only home I have ever known. That should be enough for you," He told Deerpaw the tip of his tail flicking, that remained the only hint of his annoyance. Oh for StarClan's sake! Deerpaw knew all his fur was standing up on end and that he probably looked ridiculous but this Warrior was making him crazy. He took a deep breath and tried to look at things from Stormripple's point of view. He'd probably had to defend himself to everyone his entire life. This was going to be really difficult for both of them if some compromise wasn't reached. Taking another deep breath for calm, Deerpaw allowed his calmer nature to come out and with it came the desire to shrink down from his confident stance. Maybe he couldn't do this after all. He dropped his gaze from the older tom and shook his head, wondering what he'd been thinking to actually speak his mind in the first place. His words were quiet and uncertain, but still truthful when finally he did speak again. "I wasn't trying to make you defend yourself. I just...wanted a Mentor that wanted the same things as I did. I'm not anything special, I'm weak and useless and no one thinks twice about me. I'm always trying to make others see something other than a useless nothing, and I didn't mean for you to feel like you had to explain yourself. You don't owe me anything, you're right. I just...wanted you to be different from the rest of them, that's all. I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings, I wasn't meaning to." He'd only wanted to see something about this tom that wasn't flighty and excitable. No, he definitely wasn't ever going to speak his mind ever again. He just...he just wanted to be good enough for someone; just once. -- Tags | Hellion Notes | These two are so awkward, I do love it!

STORMRIPPLE tell me that you love me Even if it's fake PThe shift in Deerpaw's tone came as a surprise to Stormripple who fought back the urge to comfort his apprentice with a gentle headbutt. Stormripple was one to be physically affeciate but decided again it for the sake of their already rocky start. The last thing he needed was for Deerpaw to shy away anymore. Forcing a smile that felt more painful than all the fake ones before, Stormripple tried to relax. Do anything to not look upset. "How about I be the judge of that. I know you have potential Deerpaw and I fully intend to get you to realize it," Stormripple replied, letting himself relax a bit more. The tension was gone from his shoulder and tail. It wouldn't do them any good to always be defensive with each other and Stormripple, trusting in Foxstar, wanted to be open with Deerpaw even if it was a challenge. "So can I be your mentor?" Stormripple asked allowing the final say to be Deerpaw's because, in the end, it was his future on the line. Silver190~ Deerpaw be the ending and I have an idea for a new thread! Sometimes the strongest among us are the ones who smile through silent pain ❅ Large ears flattened to his head as Deerpaw took in the tall tom before him. He didn't want to trust him; Warriors only hurt him and he didn't think this tom was any different. Yes he'd hurt the tom's feelings and he was sorry about that, but he remained uncertain if he could handle anyone else judging him unworthy. Foxstar was different and he trusted her, but this was almost asking too much of him. But when the question of what he wanted came up Deerpaw felt his large ears perk up in curiosity and surprise. Was he...actually giving Deerpaw a choice in this matter? Brown eyes jerked over to where Foxstar waited patiently for them to decide on their own and her gentle smile and nod told him that, yes, Stormripple was letting him choose.
Finally he turned cautious brown eyes back towards this strange tom that he didn't trust at all and wasn't sure if he ever could. He was giving him a choice though, and he was willing to try. Was Deerpaw going to be brave enough to try as well; one more time? He looked at Stormripple considerately for long moments before finally nodding to himself and stepping forward and legs too long for him and a body that never listened to the things he told it to do. He wasn't a normal Apprentice, he was clumsy and not very strong, but once more he was going to try. For a moment he let his brown eyes touch those of his new Mentor and in a moment of courage he stepped forward and touched his nose to Stormripple's once more, following the gesture with a gentle headbutt before stepping back and answering the older tom's inquiry with a definitive answer. "Yes."
He wasn't sure what the future held for the two of them, but in the end at least he would be able to feel confident in his choice because he'd at least tried.
