Inspiration
"Be careful!" came the squeaky whisper from behind her, Mistkit's mew anxious as she watched her sister do her best impression of the hunting crouch- something shown her just recently by their father. Duskflower was watching them, chatting with another queen, and the other annoying bodies that she shared her den with were off doing something else- playing some silly game, probably, while she was hunting.
Her prey was huge, completely oblivious to her as she edged closer, patchy fur bristling in excitement, tail twitching madly. She was going to catch it and give it to Duskflower- wouldn't her mother be proud? And just wait until Silverstorm heard!
Mistkit gasped as the prey suddenly began to move; Smokekit followed, stealthy as she could be, ears pointed forward and eyes fixed on the creature. "It's getting away!" the just-younger she-kit squealed. "Get it, Smokekit, get it!"
"Not yet!" she snapped back, and sucked in her breath, hoping she hadn't frightened the prey- but no, it was still trundling along, still unaware. Good. Bunching herself together, hind legs squashed beneath her, the young kit hesitated a moment longer and then pounced.
Her front paws squashed the beetle to the ground and in a moment of playfulness, she reared up on her hind legs and batted at the air before dropping down again, repeatedly stepping on the beetle and pawing at it. Mistkit began to cheer, bouncing along until she stood at Smokekit's side. "You got it! Let's show Duskflower!" Without waiting, the fluffy gray kit whirled, streaking for her mother and squalling loud enough to tell the whole camp about Smokekit's catch.
Padding behind, beetle in her mouth and tail sticking straight up, Smokekit followed, practically strutting as she brought her prize to Duskflower.
