Rays of light danced over the still-recovering camp floor as two figures emerged from the medicine cat's den. Standing side by side, as though a representation of night and day, one of LightningClan's undisputed power couples conversed in low voices so as not to draw too much attention. From behind them, a ginger and white head peeked out into the sun, tired eyes brightened by the news she'd been lucky enough to confirm to the two strong warriors. The tom's yellow eyes flicked toward the elder's den momentarily, prompting a nod of the pale she-cat's head before she reached up to push her nose against her mate's.
Moving in unison as though sharing thoughts, Palescreech and Nightstep easily maneuvered the camp's inhabitants. For the most part, the younger generation cleared a path, not wanting to stand in the way of one of LightningClan's most fearsome warriors, the Clan devil's protege himself. The remainder, the pair dodged with ease, exchanging polite pleasantries and projecting an air of friendly normalcy that came so naturally now. But a new pride glittered behind each of their gazes, burning all the brighter with each subsequent glance toward one another. Slowing near the entrance of the elder's den, the tuxedo tom slipped into the lead position.
Nightstep's sharp gaze adjusted quickly to the new lighting, soon landing upon the familiar figure of his parents. "Father, Mother." He greeted them with an affection reserved for family and Palescreech. His mate appeared as his side, their pelts brushing against one another as she settled beside him. He could hear the pleased smile in Palescreech's voice as she offered the two elders' her own greeting. "Firebird, Darkcloud, hello." Flicking her brilliant blue eyes toward him once more, the pale furred she-cat invited Nightstep to move the conversation forward.

Clouds will rage in, Storms will race in, But you will be safe in my arms.
Firebird had been a queen most of her life. Raising her family, and helping others raise theirs, had been her favorite duty as a Clan cat. But unlike her niece, Dovesong, Firebird had enjoyed her warrior duties as well. She had enjoyed the adventure and the danger, the thrill that came with a good fight or managing to take down a hare that was just as big as she was. At 100 moons, however, all those adventures were far behind her. She was really beginning to feel all those moons in her bones. As the seasons turned toward leaf-bare, the nights crept in with a chill, and in the morning it was harder to rise from her nest. Her only comfort through it was that her mate was here with her, going through just the same ordeal, though she could admit he did it with far more grace than she. Darkcloud had always been quite stoic, it had made him seem so mysterious in her youth, and he'd quickly become a mystery she wanted to solve.
She purred softly as she leisurely groomed her mate's fur, no less in love with him today than she was when she had first fallen for the tall tuxedo tom. It had taken time and a near tragedy to bring him around, but she knew he felt the same. She enjoyed teasing him with 'I loved you firsts' even though he never fell into the argument, he was far too dignified for such things, which she also enjoyed teasing him about. At her age, she wondered at how unlikely a pair they were, really. She had never been able to see it quite so clearly until they had retired and she had all the time in the world to think about all sorts of things. Like how the stoic, dignified Darkcloud had ever fallen in love with the hyperactive, emotional Firebird. She was glad he had, in any case. They had beautiful kits together, each so unique, with bits and pieces of either of them, and personality all unto themselves.
Shadow fell over the den entrance and Firebird paused in her grooming to raise her head and see who it was, though her nose told her a moment before her eyes, and her purr deepened. Nightstep greeted his parents, the she-cat at his side doing the same. She was happy her son had found a mate. Shadewhisker never had, and she feared her eldest never would. Kindleflare was a medicine cat and she had taken an oath never to take a mate or have kits of her own. Brightpool... there was hope for her yet, though it seemed StarClan had called her to do something important too in restoring the tunnels, giving LightningClan back a skill lost long ago. That didn't mean she couldn't have a family, however. Dovecloud had Harestrike, though her youngest daughter was... well. She seemed undecided in which of Morningfrost's eldest sons she really adored more, and Firebird couldn't help feeling bad for poor Harestrike every time she saw Dovecloud with his brother Thrushwhisker. And Robinflame was too busy being a warrior right now to settle down. Perhaps in a few seasons.
“Nightstep, dearheart, Palescreech, it's wonderful to see you,” she purred, and Darkcloud offered the two a simpler greeting. At her son's words of 'news' her eyes brightened, amber dancing in the relative dark of the den as she forced her old bones to take her weight, pushing stiffly to her paws. When a couple came together to give 'news' she knew what that 'news' was. She may not be as clever as Darkcloud, but she wasn't stupid either. Not after seasons upon seasons in the nursery. Darkcloud's soft touch had her pausing, his gaze narrowing slightly at her, silently warning her not to get ahead of herself, though there was a soft sort amusement there as well, reserved only for her. She would let them tell their news. She purred again, full of warmth and affection, “We always have time for you, dearheart.”

Palescreech's dainty yet conspiratorial laugh momentarily drew the tuxedo tom's attention back to her. With a soft snort of his own, the dark coated tom read the expression on his mate's face and knew immediately she'd noticed the reaction too. A light flick on her tail on his shoulder was quickly followed by the pale she-cat's lilting voice. "I think your parents have already figured it out." She teased lightly, her brilliant gaze dancing back to the figures of Darkcloud and Firebird. Nightstep's eyes were slower to follow; instead, he took a moment to admire Palescreech, back-lit by the streams of sunlight filtering in through the elder's den entrance.
His sun-gold gaze did eventually travel back to his parents, and the black and white tom easily etched a sheepish smile upon his handsome features. "I never did develop a talent for keeping secrets, did I?" He mused, feeling Palescreech's weight on his shoulder as she leaned against him. The gentle vibration of her purr was indication enough she'd caught the twist of dark humor hidden beneath his seemingly innocent statement. "No, I don't think you ever did." She agreed, amusement glittering in her gaze and masking the mischief that lay beneath.
"If you ask me, it was the 'we' that gave you away." She continued lightly, before directing her attention back to the two elders. Smiling brightly at Firebird, Palescreech wiped away any lingering uncertainties. "Kindleflare confirmed our recent suspicions this morning. Nightstep and I are expecting kits." Nightstep straightened slightly beside his mate, playing off the 'proud father' air he'd witnessed more than a few times in his life. "We figured that after Kindleflare, you should be the first to know." The tuxedo tom explained, despite a silent yet roiling unease he felt in the pit of his stomach.
He'd hesitated when Palescreech had first suggested they tell Firebird and Darkcloud. Reason being, this wasn't Palescreech's first pregnancy; she'd been in the early stages of pregnancy when the fire had ravaged LightningClan in Greenleaf. Only Kindleflare had known at the time, and Palescreech's recovery from losing the kits had been quicker for it. His tail wrapped protectively around his mate, as though he alone could ward off potential future threats.
Despite his worries, Palescreech had insisted. Who was he to argue with her? |

Clouds will rage in, Storms will race in, But you will be safe in my arms.
Firebird's purr filled the den, vibrating loudly in her throat as she closed the few steps between herself and her son and rubbed her cheek first along his, and then along Palescreech's, purring all the while. Darkcloud nodded toward them and offered a quiet congratulations, but there was pride in his eyes as well. “Oh, Nightstep, this is wonderful news! I'm so happy for you, both of you! I'm sure you'll make such wonderful parents. Palescreech, my dear, if you ever need help with anything, just let me know. I may be an old graymuzzle but I know a thing or two about raising kits.”
Unable to help herself, she covered Nightstep's cheek in rasping licks, “My little kit is going to be a father. I'm so excited! I can't wait to meet them.” She turned to Palescreech, “Does Kindleflare know how many yet? Have you two thought about names at all? It doesn't hurt to be prepared with some ideas.” Darkcloud was beside her then, his tail resting lightly over her flanks, “Just make sure you let them name their kits, hm?” Firebird purred a bit louder and leaned into her mate, “Of course, of course, I'm not trying to take that away from them. I am open to offer suggestions though.” She winked at them and laughed, giddy and beside herself with the joy of the news.
“Will you be moving to the nursery soon, Palescreech? I'll help make you the softest nest in the valley. You'll be thankful for it once you start getting bigger,” she chuckled softly, “It's very hard to get comfortable, but a soft nest always helps. And once the kits are here if you ever need to stretch your legs and want to spend a little time with Nightstep you just let me know, I'll watch over the little ones for you.” Her amber eyes all but glowed, “I'm just so happy to have kits in the family again!” She covered Palescreech's cheek in licks this time.

Nightstep touched noses with his mother, rubbing his cheek to hers in an affectionate gesture reserved for family members alone. As Darkcloud inclined his head in silent congratulations, Nightstep returned the gesture, standing a little taller beneath his father’s approving gaze. Before anything else could be said, Firebird was firing questions at Palescreech causing his pale furred mate to purr in amusement. Although she leaned against him to feel the brush of their fur, Palescreech seemed perfectly comfortable under the bombardment from his excitable mother. The tuxedo tom let the mother-to-be take center stage, laying his tail over her back in a gesture equal parts affectionate and possessive.
“We aren’t completely certain on names as of this moment. It will depend on the gender and number of kits, of course. Kindleflare is certain there will be at least two, though a third is certainly possible. She’ll tell us more definitively as the season progresses.” Palescreech’s gaze flicked to Nightstep, and the black and white tom smiled reassuringly to her before his gaze ventured to the ginger coated elder. With a teasing but affectionate grin, the tuxedo parent-to-be rumbled. “We would not be opposed to name suggestions, however.” Palescreech laughed beside him, her tail twining with his.
“Of course, you certainly have had many opportunities to come up with kit names. And I must say, I adore each and every one of your selections.” Palescreech purred sincerely. Nightstep couldn’t help but silently admire the talent with which his mate played the excited soon-to-be queen role. Sure, kits had been a real possibility for a few moons now. But he knew the pale furred she-cat, and this was not his mate’s typical attitude. Then again, she wasn’t the only one in the den playing a role.
Chuckling audibly, Nightstep tilted his muzzle before speaking. “Mother, you’re getting ahead of yourself, are you not? Palescreech still has some time before she moves to the nursery. However, I am certain she will come straight to you for advice if she needs it.” Palescreech nodded her agreement, smiling to Firebird and touching her nose to the elder she-cat’s shoulder respectfully. “Thank you, Firebird. I appreciate the offer, truly. And I’m sure that appreciation will increase tenfold when the kits arrive and we have less time to ourselves.” The pale furred she-cat hesitated a moment, before tilting her head curiously. “Is there a name you adored that you never got to use for one of your kits?” |
