"I'm a queen, it was my pleasure." Her voice still wavered, but she was starting to feel better. Her grief over losing them was still strong, but she understood that they were at least being well taken care of here. Of course, then the she-cat had to open her mouth and Echoshade's eyes went large and burned with tears. "What did those kits ever do to you to earn such hatred?" She knew she sounded upset, because she was upset. Why did this she-cat hate her precious kits? Had they been getting bullied by this warrior with her harsh manners and dark heart? Or were they on the end of a bad day, she and Rushwhisker? She hoped the rest of this clan weren't of the same opinion as this Lichenfrost she-cat.
She took a slow breath in, her heart breaking all over again. "I can't help but worry about them. I'm a mother, its what we do. But I truly appreciate you taking the time to alleviate my fears." And then they were dismissed, and the tom at her side ushered her towards the border. She kept her voice low as they left, though every step felt weighted down by the worries of her heart.
"She meant to hurt me with her words, I think." She gave a low snort, totally humorless. "I don't know what I did to earn it, but if it keeps her from taking it out on my kits then that's okay." She sighed. "You wouldn't have come here if I hadn't been in such a state. Thank you for taking me, Rushwhisker. I really appreciate it." She knew they'd broken a few rules coming here, but at the moment she couldn't bring herself to care. It was probably for the best that she wasn't able to see the kits for herself. If they'd called out to her, asked her to take them home with her, she'd have been unable to leave them and it would have been war.
She knew and understood that Flamekit and Pantherkit were TreeClan kits, but she hadn't been able to keep from becomming attached to them. She was gentle of spirit and a queen. Wasn't it best that she'd shown them the love and attention they wouldn't get from the clan of their birth? There hadn't been a queen to nurse them, which was why they'd been brought to her, tiny and starving and in need of a mother. She would always call them hers, regardless that she hadn't actually given birth to them.
