Greenleaf 28, Year 4 ------------------------ Even the hourglass stops Take my breath away I was born to shine
He had conciously chosen to come and see his kits today, at least the ones with Echoshade. The queen would soon be out of the nursery, her kits becomming apprentices. His kits becomming apprentices. He wasn't father material, wasn't mate material. He didn't want to be tied down, but he felt like he owed it to his best friend to at least try and get to know the two tiny she-kits that he'd fathered. And to see if Echoshade, who was still heartbroken over having to give up the two tom-kits she'd nursed and loved, wanted company.
As it turned out she wasn't even in the nursery, which was unusual. She never left the kits unattended, though in this case she'd left them under the watchful gaze of one of the other queens. She may have been just stretching her legs, or she might have gone to talk to Swanfeather for something health related. It was hard to tell.
So he was left with two tiny fluffballs that would soon be two apprentice fluffballs. It wouldn't be long, and the last time he'd seen them they'd still been mewling at their mother's side, blind and helpless and terrifyingly fragile. Now here he was and here they were, with no Echoshade to provide the buffer. Did they even know that he was their father? He was sure she'd told them, but did they really know? He was never around for them, didn't care to be.
Silverfrost was Deputy now, and that had started his mind thinking on different things. How irresponsible he'd been was one, but not something he regretted. He would probably always really appreciate a pretty she-cat, and probably never want to settle for just one, to be tied down as someone's permanent mate. But at least he could acknowledge these failings in himself.
So he plopped himself onto his belly on the ground and slowly crept over towards Echoshade's nest, staring curiously at the two kits within. One his exact clone in appearance, and female, the other more a blend of her mother and himself. "Um...hello kits."

dewkit, The day had been full of excitement for the two little she-kits. Dewkit had led the pair on an adventure to the far side of the camp, using Fernkit's suggestion that they were on a long journey across lots of territories that belonged to many different cats and creatures. Warriors that wandered into their path became sheep, or lazy cattle, startled away with amused grins at the clan's current largest kits. Their "Starclan guardian" was their ever patient mother, leading them with gentle suggestions around the fresh-kill pile (dubbed Demon's pit to keep the two kits from leaving paw prints over every bit of prey) and avoiding any particularly grumpy warriors or apprentices who did not want to be stopped. All in all it was a good day, Dewkit had announced through a yawn as they were ushered back into the nursery for a midday nap.
She woke at her sister's persistent nudges, sleep falling away quickly when Dewkit realized the warmth of their mother was gone. A quick look around told her that Echoshade had stepped out for a bit, probably to stretch her legs. Two large kits took up a lot of nest space. Instead, their deputy had squeezed into the nursery. His presence felt too large for the space, like he couldn't find how to contain it to a more approachable size. He looked lost, Dewkit decided, eyes blinking owlishly up at the tom.
"Dad's visiting!" Fernkit had whispered in her ear, before huddling in closer. Dad? Confusion bloomed before Dewkit remembered. Oh, right. Silverfrost wasn't around much, but he was their father, and that was something she had to respect. So, knowing her sister would like her to speak for the pair, she stood and smiled. "Hi Dad!" Dewkit said, with a tail wagging in a friendly greeting. "Did Stormstar give you a day off to see us? You're so busy as deputy! Do you have to patrol the territory every day to keep the other clans out? Do you get in any fights!" Though the words were straight to the point, there was no underlying judgement, just the curiosity the little she-kit was becoming known for. He was busy, she knew that and maybe this was her chance to learn why he couldn't visit.

Even the hourglass stops Take my breath away I was born to shine
Silverfrost inwardly cringed at the onslaught of little kitten voices, flattening himself to the ground in an effort to remain where he was. Kits were not the end of the world, they were the future. And these particular ones belonged to him, even as he refused to care for them. She wasn't asking anything other kits hadn't already asked so why did he suddenly feel like running back the way he'd come? The young deputy took a deep breath and let it out, finally letting his body relax and his tail swish around behind him idly.
"Slow down, little fish, I can't understand you." He offered finally, giving her a weak smile. His ears swiveled towards the pair, head tipping slightly in what was classically the look he gave to adult she-cats when he was paying absolute attention to them. Except without the flirt, of course. Just staring at them intently, the attention most kits wanted from the adults in their lives.
Fernkit plopped down next to her sister, staring at him the same way he was watching them. Little mini-him, she was. "I wanted to check on you all. Your mother has been very sad recently, and I wanted to make sure the three of you were doing okay."

dewkit, Dewkit huffed aloud at her questions not getting answered, flopping back into a seated position. Silverfrost wasn’t the first to shy away from her words. They came out tumbling fast like a river too full for its banks, threatening to drown cats too afraid to conquer the speed. Sometimes removing the right rock let the river flow easier, she remembered her mother saying as a trick to keep her words from overwhelming another cat. He called you little fish though! Her thoughts remined the she-kit. That’s a good thing, right? He cares about us, right? Her attention drew back to his look. Dewkit has seen in before, full of love towards older she-cats, her mother. It didn’t have the same edge that it usually did, but she felt some respect from his gaze. She stared back, maybe not as fiercely as her sister did, but keeping her eyes trained on the tom. At his words, she tilted her gaze downward and shrugged. “I miss having more kits to play with.” She admitted quietly. “I don’t want to hurt the younger kits by accidentally playing too roughly. Lotusflower would get really upset if we hurt her kits.” Then she looked back up, a million questions posed on her tongue. Instead of letting them all fall out, Dewkit paused to breathe and find the best question. With it found, she asked, “How are you doing, Silverfrost? You must miss them too.”

Silverfrost decided it was okay to just hang out for a little while. His silver white pelt settled finally and he relaxed as he listened to the idle kit chatter produced by the two she-kits before him. "The little toms were more rambunctious than the new kits I'd wager." He knew they had been. Echoshade had been thrilled with them, doting and loving and forgetting for a time that they were never hers to keep. He let out a soft huff. He never liked seeing she-cats upset, and he liked it even less when it was Echoshade. She was his best friend, the only she-cat that he would never treat the way he did all the others. She was special. Not in the 'I want to keep you forever' sort of way. Never that, he'd never seen her romantically. They'd had kits together because she'd wanted them but had lost her mate, so he'd obliged her desire to at least try. She was the one cat that knew him best, and someday he hoped she found someone to love her the way she deserved. That cat would never be him, not the way she needed, but at least he could always be there to support her when she needed it. Best friends always. When and if he ever found a she-cat that beat out his love of the cold of leafbare then maybe he'd consider the forever sort of love. But back to the conversation at paw. He reached out and drug Fernkit over to start grooming her, ignoring her mewling pleas for mercy as he sat up enough to do so. He turned her lose after only a few moments. "You're next." He warned Dewkit before swiping at her playfully with a paw so he could scoop her over for grooming as well. He hadn't answered her question. But he wouldn't say what he wanted before kits. Not when they'd go straight to their mother and tell her what he'd said. williams

dewkit, Her adopted siblings were remembered with fondness, Dewkit’s eyes glowing softly with good memories. They had only been around for what would end up being a short moment in her life, but it felt like an eternity for how long her life was at the present. Waking up warm, a little stifled by how close the warm bodies were, tumbling together with a moss ball caught in stretched out claws, taking midday naps in the gentle spots of sun left by the trees above. Each day was full of something to do, new ideas coming to five minds easier than just three. It was all a kit could ask for, a full nest with a loving family.
Thoughts returning to the present, Dewkit returned her gaze to her father. Maybe he’ll be around more, she thought, trying to determine how to make that happen. “Yes, it’s too quiet now.” Came her reply, then she nudged her sister with gentle humor. “though Fernkit’s probably feeling better! No noisy den mates to keep her up!” The two tussled quietly as the tom thought, unaware of how deep a trail his thoughts led him. Then her playmate was stolen, Silverfrost bringing Fernkit in to be groomed. Dewkit yelped in delight as a paw took her too, little claws flashing out to play with tufts of her between her father’s pawpads. She could get used to this, her father being close by. “Will you be choosing who trains us?” She asked, happily flopping against his chest. “I hope you train one of us! Then we’d get to see you more.”

He groomed her for a few moments then released her, relaxing again as he watched the two kits. He waved his tail playfully for them to pounce on. He did enjoy kits sometimes, so long as he didn't have to spend extensive time around them when they were very small. He had this irrational fear of squashing them even though he was slender and long limbed rather than heavy set. It was a long standing fear, as well as the fact that he always felt like it was more important for him to be independent then trying to be something he wasn't. He was technically the one that helped make them, but he would never be their father.
Silverfrost shook his head at Dewkit's question. "I might be the one to pick who trains you, but I already have an apprentice. His name is Frogpaw." And he was nowhere near finished with the training to try and take on another apprentice so soon. He wouldn't do it anyway. He wasn't certain, but there had to be some rule against a parent training their offspring.
He felt Fernkit finally catch his fluffy tail and lifted it so that she could try and wrestle with her 'prey'. It brought him some small joy to note his little look alike content while Dewkit of the Echoshade eyes was in front of him to talk to.

dewkit, It was disappointing to learn that they wouldn’t be training together, the flash of her father’s tail a distraction that she did not pursue. Watching her sister chase his tail though was a delight, a purr filling Dewkit’s chest entirely. She loved her sister so much. Seeing her play with her father showed the family resemblance. They all looked so similar, she thought. Like a family should right? “Maybe we can train together! Go out with you and Frogpaw. Is he nice? Do you like him?” Dewkit replied quickly, forgetting that previously the quick questions were unwelcomed. But she was distracted by the thought of having her family so close. Losing two siblings made the ache stronger. Her apprenticeship was almost on its way too. Once she was out of the nursery, Echoshade would have to return to being a warrior. Fernkit, would become Fernpaw, and she would have her own mentor to train her. Dewkit nuzzled her head against Silverfrost’s front limbs, anxiety fluttering like a butterfly in her belly. What would being an apprentice bring her?
