Ebonystare stared at the ground in front of her. Beside her was a large maple in the forest. The large black she-cat stood up and walked toward the tree, gazing up to the top. Shall I climb? Or shall I wait? Ebonystare often asked herself simple questions. Why? She was not sure. I think I shall! Ebonystare crouched down low and took a giant leap up the tree, unsheathing her claws as she made contact with the trunk. She climbed and climbed until she reached a branch near the top. Her ears twitched back and forth, listening for prey. Nothing reached her ears, so she silently sat and waited. For what? Only she knew.

*Being the best climber in the clan, Redhawk was in a branch higher still, and hidden by the shadows of the close leaves. He watched with interest as Ebonystare perched on a branch lower than his own. By her ears, he knew she was looking for prey to start with, but soon switched to a waiting posture. Perhaps hoping if she was still, prey would stir. With a mischevious smile, the bushy-tailed tom flipped his tail over the side of his branch and flicked it across the she-cat's ears, pulling it back out of sight before she could see it. He loved doing this to cats, but he hoped if she jumped, like many often do, she wouldn't fall out of the tree.*

As a red, bushy tail brushed across her ears, Ebonystare slightly jumped. Regaining her balance quickly, the black she-cat looked up and saw a red figure. Being the silent cat she is, Ebonystare climbed up to the branch above her, greeting Redhawk with a quick touch between noses. Quickly, Ebonystare went and sat beside the bushy-tailed red tom. "Hello Redhawk!" Ebonystare greeted the tom, a smile glinting in her eyes. After her short two word greeting, she began to groom between her paws. "I don't think I've ever climbed this high before..." The black female said in a low meow.

*Redhawk laughed happily and returned the gesture.* Greetings, Ebonystare. And congradulations at staying on the branch. I hoped you would. No sense in a trip to the medicine cat den over something so silly, but I just can't help myself. *He scooted over on the branch to give her some more room to clean her feet. When she remarked on the height of their perch, he uttered a chuckle.* This? Hmm, I guess we are sort of high up, aren't we? I usually sit in the tops, though. Better view, unsuspecting prey, and easier to suprise lower climbing cats. *He swooped his tail around his paws and watched her carefully. Some cats got dizzy with higher climbs, as he had learned through various apprentices. But she seemed steady and he kept a close watch on her for any hint that that might change.*

"I'm surprised I didn't fall!" Ebonystare continued grooming herself. Hearing a bird, she tensed up. Everything made her jumpy at this height. "So...What do you like to do besides climb up trees and spook other cats?" Ebonystare had stopped grooming herself and was holding on with her claws a little too tightly. Her shoulders were tensed up, as were all of her other muscles. Just don't look down...Don't look down... She kept reminding herself. Although it seemed so, Ebonystare was not afraid of heights. It was just the thought of falling down. Once again jumping at hearing a bird rustling, she lost her balance and landed on her belly, two legs to one side and two to the other, on the branch.

*Redhawk lunged as she fell, and had she not fallen on the branch, she would still have been safe, as he caught her scruff. He let her go when he found her to be stradling the branch. He smiled as he looked at her. He knew she had been to tense, and had been waiting for something to spook her. That little ability of his came in very handy. His smile changed to a good-natured smirk,* Well, I like catching the cats that follow me too high for one. Then, I like squirrels. Probably because they're so easy for me to catch...But, hold that thought for a moment please. Don't want you falling again, do we? *He winked and stepped on to a higher branch still, then around the trunk beyond view. The leaves rustled a bit and he dropped back into view carrying a small red bird. He laid it down before her.* There. Now there is nothing in this tree to startled you but me, and I promise I won't do it as high up as we are. Now, let's have a snack, huh?

"A snack sounds good to me, but how about we take it down there," Ebonystare meowed, nodding downwards to the ground, "So I don't fall?" Ebonystare was still straddling the branch. She felt safer that way. She had wrapped her legs around the branch, holding on with her claws. "Ummm...But I'm going to need some help getting up off this branch." Ebonystare was quite embarrassed at herself. Why was she so clumsy? "And once we eat we can go for a walk? Maybe catch some prey?" Ebonystare was enjoying the red tom's company quite a bit. Never before had she enjoyed someone's company enough to hold a small conversation.

*Redhawk chuckled and helped her up by her scruff. He figured that was the best way to help, and he could see that the position was embarassing her.* I've got the bird. That would probably be best since I can climb better. And I can still help you down if you need me to. As for a walk and some prey, maybe we should get Dustypaw. I am sure she would love the chance to hunt. That apprentice of your's is always so ready to help. I would love to have her as mine. You got lucky. I know from experiance that they aren't all that way.

Ebonystare sighed with exaspiration. It wasn't that she didn't like Dustypaw, she just wasn't sure she was ready for an apprentice. "That sounds alright to me..." Ebonystare replied. "If you like, you could help me with her...I'll need help." Ebonystare had started climbing down the tree after Redhawk, thankful that he had the bird. "We'll need to get her a mouse or something. I'm not sure that bird's big enough for the three of us..." Her voice trailed off, sort of reluctant to get Dustypaw. Oh well...What would a little bonding hurt... Ebonystare thought to herself, not wanting to answer.

*Redhawk climbed down the tree after the black she-cat. He smiled around the bird as leaped down the large maple, branch by branch. When he landed on the ground beside her, he dropped the bird.* I would love to! But, you have to keep in mind that she's your apprentice after all. I can come with you on expeditions and give you pointers, but you are her mentor when all is said and done. And don't worry. She is a good one to start with. *He motioned toward the prey with a slight smile.* As for this, it's just for us. Apprentices eat after the clan is fed and after they have done some sort of duty anyway. It's good for them. Part of the warrior code and teaches them to get along until there is food in bitter leafbares. Overall, it benefits them and the clan. *He chuckled* Listen to me! I am already getting into the mentor attitude. Anyway, you'll do great with her when you get into it. Let's eat, then you can run back to camp and get her. She'll be excited to get out of there and do something.

"That sounds nice..." Ebonystare said, a little worriedly. She had never had an apprentice before, and wasn't sure how to handle the situation. Sitting down, she took a bite out of the bird and chewed thoughtfully, forgetting to pluck the feathers off. Swallowing the piece, Ebonystare realized that she had a feather or two stuck to her lips, so she blew them off. "Alright. Let's go get Dustypaw." The she-cat said, a little reluctantly.

*As he chewed, Redhawk picked up on how nervous she was and placed his tail on her shoulder with a confident smile. He swallowed then gazed at her with reassuring eyes and with a soft voice said,* You will be fine. But you have to seem sure of yourself. If you don't, she will lose confidence in both of you. Now, let's go get that apprentice of your's and show her the best training session she's ever had. *He moved his tail to brush her ears, then picked himself up and trotted in the direction of camp. He walked a little slow at first to make sure she was following.*

Ebonystare watched Redhawk rise to his feet. As he began walking, she hesitated a little bit. When she saw Redhawk turn around toward her, she knew she didn't really have a choice. "Let's go get Dustypaw..." Ebonystare murmured to herself, letting her brain know it would be alright. As she followed Redhawk back to camp, so many scenarios flowed through her mind. What if she failed? How would she start? What would happen if her and Dustypaw don't get along well? The last scenario exited her mind as they entered the camp and Dustypaw came running toward her. "Hi, Dustypaw." Ebonystare said, not so enthusiastically.

*Dustypaw sighed as she watched her tail flip in bordum. Another day with nothing to do. She had went to the warriors den a little while ago, but Ebonestare had been gone. She had left camp without her. Dustypaw felt a breif stab of anxiety as she wondered if her mentor thought she was useless. Her breathing started to come a little faster as she considered the possiblilty that everyone in the clan thought she was a waste of space. 'No', she thought, 'No. They haven't seemed angry...but then, mom didn't either...No!' Just as she was beginning to get really scared, Ebonystare came into camp with Redhawk. 'I'll prove myself, by StarClan, I will!' She spang up and went running toward the black she-cat. But she was running too fast and tried to stop too late. She heard Ebonystare mutter a greeting...right before she plowed into her. After they went tumbling, Dustypaw sprang up off of her and gave a nervouse smile.* H-hi, Ebonystare...S-sorry about that.
*Redhawk threw his head back and laughed fully. He knew that Ebonystare had been worried about the session, and that Dustpaw was always scared about being made to leave. That was part of why he laughed. The two needed to relax around each other and the rest of the clan more. Well, and it was just funny. He stopped and nudged Dustypaw with his forepaw.* Well well, Ebonystare, I think this one needs a little battle practice. Put that momentum to good use!

Ebonystare's eyes widened as Dustypaw came running at her with super speed. Wow... She's f- but Ebonystare didn't get to finish her thought because at that moment, Dustypaw and all her enthusiasm plowed right into her. Thinking about saying something snappy, Ebonystare looked down at her shaking apprentice and her heart softened. Laughing a little, the black she-cat looked at her aprentice and gave her an affectionate lick between the ears. "C'mon you. Let's go into the forest. It's a fine day for training." Ya know... I kinda like this apprentice. She's a little too spaztic, but she seems eager to learn. And plus, she already seems a litte attached... Maybe this won't be so bad.
