Description:
At a distance, Peregrine's most noticeable feature is her long-legged structure. She'd been one of those kits with disproportionately long legs, a feature most thought she would grow out of as she aged. Though she did grow, and filled out a little more, she is still an extremely leggy she-cat. Unlike her adoptive sister, she is not heavy-set, only further compounding her near spider-like body structure. Due to her build, Peregrine seems fragile, as though she may be shattered by even the most playful of swats. Her apparent fragility is further highlighted by her gait; although effortlessly elegant in most of what she does, Peregrine's stride is that of a much smaller, daintier cat when not out hunting.
Up close, Peregrine's facial features likely stand out the most. Her profile reveals a more defined, almost square forehead, leading to a sloping muzzle. This gives the impression that her ears are set further back on her head than other cats, though it is solely an illusion of her atypical forehead. From the front, her sloping muzzle is apparent in the tapering of her features and the elongated look of her face. Her ears are fairly large, accenting her slender build. When relaxed, her ears rest in such a way that they follow the angle of her muzzle, tracing an upside down triangle between their points and the end of her muzzle.
Peregrine's fur is a clean mix of dark and light shades, ranging from a gray-brown to cream. Her base coat is a soft cream color, evidenced by the flecked pattern on her back. The cream coat there is covered with darker fur, all in varying shades of brown with cream peeking out on occasion. It resembles a muted mimic of the underbelly feathers of a peregrine falcon, as her name suggests. Her coat is lightest on her chest, legs and muzzle, where the cream base coat is mostly undisturbed by the darker fur.
Two sets of dark brown stripes, originating near her shoulders, reach toward one another on her chest. The first, higher up on her neck, is less noticeable, blending into her cream coat. The second is much darker, curving a clear line until it disappears before it can connect to the identical line on the opposite side. The stripes reappear on all four of her legs, nearest her body. They vanish before reaching her wrists, leaving the she-cat with cream-colored paws. Her tail, elegant and thin, is nearly consumed by the dark stripes, interrupted only occasionally by lighter fur. Though she does possess a darker stripe lining her back, it is mostly lost among the dark fur spattering her shoulders and haunches.
Peregrine's forehead is littered with small flecked stripes, ending on her brow. Her profile reveals two stripes reaching toward her eye, one on each cheek. These particular stripes, though curving interestingly on her cheekbones, draw attention to her soft green eyes. They are light in color, further accented by her tapering muzzle which makes her eyes look large. Generally, her gaze is distant yet inquisitive all at once. It can be difficult to read her eyes, often causing others to misjudge her. Her facial features are finished by shorter white whiskers framing a muzzle tipped with a reddish-pink nose.
Description Summary: A lean, long-legged, peculiar brown and cream tabby she-cat with a sloped muzzle and pale green eyes.
Personality:
Although she doesn't actually know it, Peregrine struggles socially. Her physical features, foreign as they are, are compounded by her aloof tendency. She has two extremes; either she is found to be staring off in a completely different direction mid conversation, or she fixes her conversation partner with an offputting, intense stare. Unfortunately, most tend to find her distant or strange, preferring to interact with other members of the Tribe than her. She, on the other paw, considers most of the Tribe members to be her friend. And with no true friend to compare her 'relationship' with the other Tribe cats to? Peregrine finds nothing wrong with her friendships.
The long-legged she-cat often fails to grasp the small nuances found in most social interactions. With a tendency to take things literally, she doesn't comprehend most jokes which can make situations awkward for others surrounding her. At the same time, most insults escape her, unless they are glaringly obvious. Even then, she doesn't exactly take offense; rather, she files it away in her brain as another fascinating tidbit on her relationship with the cat to throw the insult. This has led to a pawful of exasperated lectures from her sister, Rose, who attempts to get the peculiar she-cat to understand what just occurred. Most of the time, the conversations go nowhere, ending when Rose stalks off to pummel the offending Tribe member to reclaim some sort of... Family pride.
What many don't see is the near-kit like curiosity she holds for the world around her. Fascinated by everything, especially the sky, Peregrine constantly has a thousand questions buzzing about in her brain like a swarm of bees. Though they mostly pass unasked, she feels a pull in her chest to know and to understand. She accepts the Tribe and its ways as truth, yet she doesn't see the world in quite as dogmatic a fashion as many Tribe members might. The arrival of the she-cat known as Featherstep fascinated Peregrine, for it served as proof that there was another way of life. A way of life she's been dying to learn about, to observe with her own eyes rather than hear stories about.
Although not particularly vivacious, Peregrine is friendly beneath the prejudice of peculiarity set upon her head. Excessively understanding and uncomplaining, she holds no judgment upon anyone, regardless of what they might have done to her in the past. She doesn't have enemies, at least not in her mind, because every acquaintance is a friend to her. Unfortunately, this leaves the idiosyncratic she-cat exposed and malleable to most, for she will do just about anything she is asked, a fact her sister takes advantage of more than a pawful of times a season. She is obedient to a fault, at least until something ignites her curiosity and sets her in motion once more.
With her obedient tendencies comes a passiveness that Rose finds disgusting. Peregrine rarely stands up for anything, and instead nods her head in apparent understanding. Gullible and inclined to accept what others tell her as truthful, she only expresses what she thinks when asked. Despite being an adult cat, she has retained a kit-like naivety, exacerbated by Rose's tendency to use her.
History:
The strange she-cat was found by a group of Tribe Prey-Hunters and accompanying Cave-Guards at approximately four moons old. The Prey-Hunters' attention had been captured by the shrill cry of a peregrine falcon as it folded its wings and plummeted to the ground below. What they found on approach was the falcon with a squealing kit in its powerful talons; moving rapidly, the group killed the falcon to rescue the kit. The strange looking she-kit was injured, and the Tribe members decided to bring her back to their home, so she might be inspected by their Healer. The Stoneteller treated her injuries, but deemed the she-kit in need of a mother's care.
Her care was entrusted to one of the patrol's attending Cave-Guards, Rock on Mountain Top, a tom with a Kit-Mother mate. He and Mist of Early Dawn had a daughter of their own, similar in age to the abandoned kit. She was given the name Cry of Hunting Peregrine, a nod to the falcon that both fed the Tribe and led them to the kit in need. Eventually, the injured kit found enough strength to communicate with her rescuers, though the interaction failed to reveal much. She could not recall how she'd come to be alone in the mountains.
The temporary adoption became full time, to the dismay of Mist and Rock's more contentious and entitled daughter, Rose With Crimson Petals. Rose barely tolerated Peregrine through much of their kit-hood, often purposely avoiding the leggier she-kit whom she viewed as an intruder to a perfect family. The pattern of avoidance continued until Rose began to clue in to Peregrine's docile and tractable nature. Because of Peregrine's thinner and more fragile build, Rose deemed her to be incompatible with all the fun games. As such, Rose began pleasantly asking that Peregrine go count the cracks in the cave wall for her, or something of similar nature to preoccupy the strange kit. And Peregrine never once complained or disobeyed. All the while, Rose would ensure Peregrine never mentioned anything to Mist or Rock, for the adoptive parents had fully accepted Peregrine as their daughter, and likely would not of approved of Rose's games.
Rose became a To-be one moon before Peregrine, leaving the younger she-kit to spend an increasing amount of time with their mother, Mist. Curious by nature, Peregrine frequently asked Mist about the outside world. Mist was more than happy to discuss it with her daughter, so long as Peregrine promised not to leave the security of the cave. Peregrine, of course, did so with little hesitation and Mist rewarded her with descriptions of the sky above and rocky terrain below. Peregrine became particularly fascinated with the sky, her questioning eventually leading to the topic of the Tribe of Endless Hunting. She would never grow tired of the stories about them.
Rose's tolerance for her adopted sister plummeted once more when, at the age of eight moons, Peregrine was appointed as a To-be Prey-Hunter by the Stoneteller. Despite the long history of Cave-Guards in Rose's family tree, Peregrine's lean and slender build was better fitted to Prey-Hunter than Cave-Guard. To Rose, Peregrine was the thorn among feathers in a nest; the outcast, the strange one, the undesirable one.
A seasoned Prey-Hunter by the name of Snow on Jagged Peak served as Peregrine's mentor. Although the white she-cat was patient, Snow did not quite agree with Peregrine's acceptance into the Tribe. This, and Peregrine's curiosity proved problematic in the early stages of her training. Snow would have to remind her endlessly to pay attention. Peregrine wasn't trying to be rude; there were simply so many elements available to capture her attention in the outside world that her focus would wander. Eventually, the novelty of outside would subside enough for the peculiar she-cat to focus on her mentor for more substantial periods of time.
Much to the surprise of most, Peregrine proved a quick study, with a talent for hunting; the small, almost awkward stride she used on a daily basis was entirely abandoned for a much more far-reaching one lasting the duration of hunts. Though she succeeded in her duties beneath Snow's tutelage, Peregrine continued to struggle socially, with many To-Bes avoiding interacting with her. Much of her interaction was with Rose, and that interaction tended to manifest in obeying 'suggestions' made by her sister.
As the two sisters continued to grow physically, they drifted further apart. Rose wanted little to do with her Prey-Hunter sister, though Mist and Rock's inquiries were placated with lines such as "We're both just so busy!". Rose earned her place as a Cave Guard in Peregrine's thirteenth moon. It would be nearly three more moons before Peregrine became a full-fledged Prey-Hunter.
Shortly before her sixteenth moon, Snow decided the leggy she-cat had learnt all there was to teach concerning being a Prey-Hunter. No more than a few days following her appointment as Prey-Hunter, a mysterious she-cat appeared in the Tribe ranks, referred to as Featherstep. Peregrine found the she-cat to be fascinating, but kept herself from asking questions following a heavy-pawed suggestion from Rose to stay quiet. Although Rose was less inclined to accept this new she-cat, Peregrine didn't mind at all and treated Featherstep as she would any Tribe member. Life proceeded uneventfully for a pawful of moons following Featherstep's arrival.
During Peregrine's twenty-second moon, however, that would change. She was on a hunt with some other Prey-Hunters, accompanied by a group of Cave-Guards including her sister Rose. Though much of the hunt proceeded with little trouble, a strange sound ended their escapade early and had them rushing home. The group returned to find the cave had collapsed, claiming the lives of many including the Stoneteller, Mist, Rock and Snow. Peregrine grieved silently for the departed, especially her parents. She spent exponentially more time observing the sky following the incident, as if she might spot the fallen members of the Tribe up in the Tribe of Endless Hunting. Those other victims of the collapse survived, many were severely injured. Even the most valiant of efforts failed to save most of these injured Tribe members.
As the snows melted away from the mountain, Featherstep shared with them tales of a new home waiting for them. Intrigued by the promise of unexplored lands, Peregrine followed the former Clan cat. She could leave the anguish of recent events behind, and start anew somewhere else. Her sister Rose was also among the traveling cats, though the red she-cat was driven more so by a lack of remaining ties to their old home, rather than any interest in a new one.
