Frozenrain67 Moons // Warrior-Queen // StoneClanNewleaf was coming to an end. Frozenrain could feel it in the air and under paw. Their arid, dry home had begun to look a little greener than what they were used to seeing. It always tickled her to picture apprentices that were used to the more banal seasonal colors, going out into the scrublands and seeing that StoneClan actually had flowers.
The StoneClan senior warrior left Hawkstar's den where she had been resting, avoiding the heat. StoneClan always felt greenleaf's intense sunshine more easily than the other Clans; there was little cover, and the rocks often grew unbearably warm. Now that the sun was starting its descent, Frozenrain deemed it the right time to go hunting.
It was a stressful time for the Clan. Greencough was cutting through their ranks as wickedly as any enemy; the deaths had been minimal, so far, but Frozenrain was cautiously optimistic that they would all recover sooner rather than later. Speaking of recovering... Frozenrain's baby blue eyes found the sleek black pelt of Vipertail returning from a patrol; she waved her tail at him, and with a maternal smile and a regal bearing, approached.
Frozenrain was not a neglectful mother, by any stretch of the word. She cared deeply for Vipertail and Herondive, and for StoneClan as a whole. However, she was wise enough to know that Vipertail needed to understand the consequences of his actions; she had not liked it, but she had treated him with more seriousness than usual, expressing her disappointment in the lack of her usual warmth.
But now the time for reprimand had passed. He really looked as though he regretted causing trouble for StoneClan. She was biased enough to admire his tenacity and desire to serve his Clan; he had just gone about it the wrong way. Thank StarClan LightningClan hadn't saw fit to retaliate.
"Evening, my son." Frozenrain mewed upon reaching him, her smile soft, tinged with warmth. "Are you too busy to go for a walk with your mother? We will be hunting on the way back." It was important to keep an open, honest relationship with her kits. She should have spoken to him sooner; if Vipertail had felt like he could talk to her, the incident with the Sun Stones could have been avoided. He could have vented his frustrations, and she would have shared his father's intentions to take the Stones in greenleaf.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior Today, the sun blazed high overhead, its rays beginning to dance across the earth, obscuring the distant ground in a shimmering veil. For some, the coming of greenleaf brought dread. The heat ahead was stifling to some cats. But Vipertail? He was born for this. His body was alight with anticipation, his senses sharp, as if powered by the sun. But its tenure in the sky was coming to an end, its impossibly bright form beginning to sink beneath the mountains of the distance, bathing the world in a brilliant gold, as if issuing a final farewell to the valley.
As his patrol reached the camp, he spotted a familiar pale pelt emerging from the leader's den. He turned to the tabby-and-white she-cat beside him and murmured a quick goodbye, brushing his pelt against hers, before starting towards Frozenrain. Lately, she had been cold to him. It had felt like an icy claw in his side, unwilling to melt despite the seasons' warmth. Her greeting had caught him a bit off-guard, but in a pleasant way. He padded towards her, meeting her gaze briefly before blinking amicably. "Mother," he returned with a nod. Has she forgiven me? he wondered, feeling a bit timid. He could face the claws of a thousand enemies, but StarClan help him when it came to the wrath of his mother. "Are you too busy to go for a walk with your mother?"
"Of course not," he mewed, the tip of his tail twitching in amusement. He turned back the way he'd just come from, pausing mid pawstep to wait for her.

Frozenrain67 Moons // Warrior-Queen // StoneClanHer son's affectionate goodbye with Honeynose had not gone unnoticed; Frozenrain's heart warmed by the exchange. That was the way things were meant to be; her son was a fine warrior, and though quite young in her eyes, everyone went through life at their own pace. She had always believed he would settle down sooner than Herondive; Herondive's perspective on the world had changed, and with it, her daughter's priorities. Serving the Clan came first -- and that didn't always mean filling up the nursery with kits.
However, Frozenrain found the idea of becoming a grandmother to be something like a wish fulfilled. No longer at an age where she could bear another litter of kits safely, Frozenrain had contented herself to enjoy her golden years - to love the offspring she had, and hope for grandkits one of these seasons.
"How are you feeling? Any hint of greencough in your father is gone, but I can never be too sure it hasn't spread to my kits." Frozenrain walked side by side with her son, her pace slowing so that she could cast a concerned eye upon his black coat. He looked healthy, but so had Hawkstar, despite his cough and aching joints. If he was sick, then she would bring him to see Dawnblossom and Sandpaw herself. "And your injuries?"
No one in Vipertail's group had escaped at least a few scratches (though Dawnchaser had gotten the worst of it), and Frozenrain was keen to know if he was back in full health. She did not want him punishing himself for his actions by not seeking treatment as penance. Frozenrain believed Vipertail was smarter than this, and understood that the only way to make up for the risks he had taken was to dedicate his time and efforts to the Clan, not any sort of self-inflicted punishment.
Neither she nor or his father could let him take such a drastic route for forgiveness.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior Vipertail matched his mother's pace, padding alongside her. "I'm fine," he purred in response to his mother's fussing. "I've been working closely with Dawnblossom to keep the clan's bedding fresh." He paused before continuing dramatically, "I can assure you, not a scrap of infected moss is left in this territory!"
The duties he'd been assigned to following the Sun Stone debacle had begun to felt less like a humiliating punishment as he'd realized how much the medicine cats had on their paws right now. It was better that he, a healthy warrior, deal with the ill cats than exposing growing apprentices to the greencough more than was necessary.
"And my injuries," the black warrior added quickly, "are fine." Vipertail let silence settle for a moment before wheeling on his mother. "And how are you?" he asked, squinting his eyes in mock suspicion. "Sleeping okay? Are you eating enough?" He began prodding her with his forepaw. "Any aches or wheezes?" Not giving her time to reply, he widened his eyes in mock horror, gasping. "Are you... are you suffering from missing-your-favorite-son-cough?"

Frozenrain67 Moons // Warrior-Queen // StoneClanVipertail was brave. Sometimes it took more courage to tend to the sick, especially with the threat of catching the sickness going around, than to lead a patrol of cats into battle. Frozenrain laughed at her son's antics, letting him prod her with his forepaws until she managed to affect a cough. "How did you know? Your father and I both suffer from missing-our-kits-cough every time you or Herondive get out of sight." Frozenrain purred, and gave her son a nuzzle behind the ears, her lighter muzzle brushing into his night-hued fur.
"Have you spoken to her lately? Your sister? She seems to be going off by herself more and more." That was a worrisome thing when it came to cats who had a porpensity to brood, like Herondive did. Despite the serious question, the chance to tease Vipertail in return presented itself the moment she thought of Honeynose. "Of course, I wouldn't blame you for not speaking to her often. You seem to be keeping Honeynose company this newleaf. Anything I should know about?"
There was a twinkle in Frozenrain's eyes, though a small part of her heart clenched at the slight horror of her son impregnating a she-cat without even bringing her to meet his parents first. Or meeting Honeynose's parents. That kind of devil-may-care attitude towards relationships and offspring might have been fine in other Clans, but for StoneClan, family was important, and relationships followed the very nature of the Clan's name - set in stone, built to endure the worst.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior Vipertail chuckled as his mother nuzzled him. He blinked back at her, feeling grateful to have her motherly warmth back. "She seems to be going off by herself more lately..." Has she? he thought, feeling a bit guilty for having not really spent time with his sister lately. Suppressing his curiosity so as to not worry his mother, he made a silent note to go and speak with Herondive soon.
The warrior tried to act nonchalant at the mention of Honeynose. "Anything I should know about?"
"Oh, yes, Mother," he said, nodding earnestly, sarcasm dripping from his voice, "we bonded over soiled nests and are expecting our first litter of kits any day now!" Truth be told, he didn't quite know why his pelt felt hot anytime she was mentioned, or why the sight of her sometimes made his heart pound. It was uncharted territory for Vipertail, but he didn't intend to let anyone else know that. Tearing his mind from the subject, he purred and nudged Frozenrain's shoulder with his. "Herondive is fine. We've all been busy lately."

Frozenrain67 Moons // Warrior-Queen // StoneClan He retaliated with sarcasm, as if she were a denmate teasing him about his love life. Frozenrain's whiskers twitched, amused by what she could see - even if he couldn't. Accepting his explanation about Herondive (for now), Frozenrain's reply was temporarily set aside, as movement caught her eye in the nearby distance. It was a lizard, brownish with black markings - hard to spot if you didn't know what to look for.
Frozenrain eased fluidly into a crouch, directing her son to flank it with a gentle point of her tail towards the right. "Perhaps you can guide it towards me? And watch for your shadow, Vipertail." She couldn't stop herself from making these gentle reminders; Vipertail didn't need them, but she did. He would always be her son, and she would always feel a strong desire to nurture him and look after him - even when he was starting to get sore joints and a graying muzzle, just as she would be in a few more moons (StarClan willing).
Soon enough, however, Vipertail would be training his own apprentice, advancing to the next stage of his life. From kit, to apprentice, to warrior, to mentor. Though it would not surprise her if deputy was some day in his future, she considered mentoring the next generation of StoneClan cats to be right on par with the coveted title of Hawkstar's second-in-command.

VipertailStoneClan - 24 Moons - Tom - Warrior The warrior spotted the lizard within heartbeats of his mother, freezing instinctively as she dropped to a crouch. He gave a slight nod in acknowledgement to her direction, stifling an amused purr at her coaching. But he didn't mind. She was his mother, and having her fuss over him was a welcome relief from the cold shoulder she'd been offering lately. Vipertail melted in to a crouch, giving the lizard a wide berth as he moved around to flank the reptile.
He took a couple of careful steps towards the lizard before flicking the shadow of his tail beside the lizard, putting the small creature on alert. Then, with the smarmy confidence only a practiced hunter could muster, he swiped lazily at his prey, sending it skittering in to his mother's waiting claws. Perfect. It was an easy catch, but small. He glanced around the scrublands, green eyes searching the long shadows of the brush for any flicker of movement.
For a moment, Vipertail stood still, letting his senses explore his surroundings. He glanced to the left, eyes gleaming. A small thrush pecked at the earth, separated from him by the woody branches of a scrubby bush. StarClan, that's lucky. He took a few silent steps forward, careful not to disturb the little bird as he moved as close as he could. A few heartbeats passed before he leapt in to the air, his passing body shaking the branches of the shrub and startling the bird in to flight. He met the bird in air, grabbing it in his claws. He landed, bird pinned beneath his forepaws, and nipped its spine neatly, ending its weak struggling.
Picking up his catch, he met his mother's gaze. Where to next? 288 - Fawn - This was really painful to describe. And it sounds dumb. But I'm not rewriting it so deal. XD

Frozenrain67 Moons // Warrior-Queen // StoneClanFrozenrain had noticed the thrush a heartbeat quicker than he did - but Vipertail's proximity was better than hers, so she kept her distance to watch instead. He had been trained well; the kill was neat. Frozenrain, one paw on the lizard she had dispatched, sent a silent prayer to StarClan in thanks for this catch. Willing to give Vipertail the benefit of the doubt that he had given thanks also (especially considering who his father was), Frozenrain carried her lizard to the thin shadowy underbelly of a low shrub. She placed it in the shadows for safe-keeping, cautious of keen-eyed birds snatching up their prey as soon as their backs were turned.
"Well done. It won't be long before you're teaching an apprentice of your own." With a soft beckoning wave of her tail, she set the pace again - a leisurely stroll this time now that they had caught two pieces of prey. More would be required to feed the Clan, she knew this, but they could take their time now. Breathing in the fresh wind sweeping down from the mountain peaks, Frozenrain slowed, gazing with a soft, distant expression at the steep slope leading up the valley.
"Did we ever tell you about StoneClan's time in the mountains?" Frozenrain mewed, the memories rushing back. Her conversation with Hawkstar... her admittance of the litter she--they--had lost still fresh on the former queen's mind. She was getting so nostalgic. Made breathless by the sharp sting of pain in her breast at the memory, Frozenrain went to her son's side and gave the nape of his neck a gentle nuzzle. "You're very fortunate not to have been born there, Vipertail. The mountains are beautiful, but we're StoneClan cats, and it just wasn't the right fit for us."
The uneven terrain, the crags, the unfamiliar vegetation... It had been exciting, bewildering, and alienating in one swoop. Of course, the stress of their homelessness and the crashing wave of sorrow for their losses had marred any chances of appreciating the mountains. It did not seem like an ideal place to support a Clan as large as theirs; a small group, perhaps, but Frozenrain would sooner encourage Hawkstar to take another Clan's territory than try to rehome StoneClan in the mountains again.
Thank StarClan, we have no need to even consider it.
This territory, this ground beneath their paws, it was their home. And it was worth fighting for.
