For once, Cinderstripe mused, it seemed as if the open air outside of her clan's cave home was warmer than within. The leafbare winds had chilled her to the bone, and the beckoning of newleaf's breeze was too much for her to resist. The perfume of the world blooming around her seemed to linger in the rays of sun that filtered through the overhead pine branches. Slate-colored ears twitched at the birdsong that filled the forest, and for a moment she felt as if she might chatter along.
The she-cat's shadowy pelt rippled as she stretched out, claws extending in to the damp earth, a yawn revealing her fangs. The previous evening, Pinewhisker had loosely assigned a patrol to walk the TreeClan border. A quick glance revealed she was the first out, so she sat facing the camp entrance, curling her tail over her dark paws. She was a patient cat. You get that from your father, she remembered her mother hissing at her when she was just a kit. It hadn't seemed like much of a compliment at the time, but she couldn't understand how agonizing over things out of her control was a good thing. A warrior's life was enough for her... she didn't need further agitation.
Bright amber eyes peered in to the cave's entrance tunnel, searching. Her clanmates should be joining her soon.

24 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Hollystorm woke quickly, groomed her pelt until it was it's usual lustrous shade of black, and then collected Coalpaw from the apprentices' den. The tom was already larger than she was - and with a dense layer of fur that made her seem almost thin by comparison. But Hollystorm knew better than to associate size with strength; sometimes the heaviest cats were the slowest and least skilled in battle.
It all came down to training, and at the end of the day, Hollystorm planned to make her mentor, Starlingcry proud. The strict NightClan she-cat had given Hollystorm her own son to train, after all.
"Morning, Cinderstripe," she greeted the younger she-cat mildly. One ear was swiveled back to make sure she could hear Coalpaw's footsteps; it was true, she hadn't been... the greatest mentor to date (Coyotepaw's attack, her renewed interest in Sunpulse, Ghostlight and Blackwolf getting greencough), but Hollystorm was prepared to make up for it. She'd brought the young tom a blackbird as an apology, so he would not be too hungry this morning.
She planned to get a lot of ground covered, today. Cinderstripe's mother had been Slatenose, a she-cat Hollystorm had first met while a kit in the nursery. She had also been NightClan's deputy for a time - which made Hollystorm curious about Cinderstripe's reaction to the recent news.
How did she feel about Pinewhisker? Hollystorm recognized the more senior warrioress's accomplishments, however she was having difficulty shaking off Redcloud's death. Hollystorm had considered Redcloud a friend; not a close friend, but someone she knew well enough to miss.

Coalpaw! NightClan Apprentice Twelve Moons
WORDS 350~ NOTES say something nice | Coalpaw had slept beside his sister and brother, finding comfort in being next to them like their nursery days. He almost hadn't heard Hollystorm call for him over his brother's snoring, it took his mentor saying his name a few times before he finally heard. Looking up from his nest, he replied he'd be right out. Standing up he stretched the best he could inside his nest before heading out of the apprentice den.
Newleaf had made leafbare feel like a bad dream, he was truly grateful it was finally over. Turning to his mentor he was greeted by the she-cat presenting him a blackbird to eat. At first Coalpaw felt the urge to decline the offered meal, he didn't really like birds. Yet he took it and it anyways, it was easier then seeing the look on Hollystorm's face if he declined. Plus he didn't want to seem picky. He didn't want the connection to be made that he thought entitled. If anything he felt overly pressured to be a good example of a proper NightClan apprentice.
Devouring the bird to avoid tasting it too much, Coalpaw cleaned his chops with a forepaw before heading after his mentor. While he'd never say it to her face, Coalpaw hadn't really bonded with her. She was occupied with Sunpulse and her own family drama, not that Coalpaw blamed her. Everyone had their own lives to live.
As he came up to stand next to Hollystorm, he gave a small greeting to Cinderstripe in the form of a nod. His tail flicked a few times as his dull yellow eyes focused on the she-cat. He knew that they were heading toward the TreeClan border. Coalpaw hadn't been there in a long time and honestly was eager to travel to that part of the territory. His eagerness showed in the back and forth motion of his tail, unsure of who was technically leading the patrol, Coalpaw simply waited for the signal to move on.

Cinderstripe recognized the silky black pelt of her clanmate emerging from the cave. Hollystorm. She twitched her ears at the warrior's greeting, and returned it. "Morning." The daughter of perhaps one of NightClan's most notorious warriors, Blackwolf, and mentored by Starlingcry, perhaps one of its fiercest, it was a wonder that Hollystorm had time for pleasantries at all. They always seem so miserable. And serious. She stifled her own private amusement, not letting it break the surface, and turned her eyes back to watch for the final member of their patrol.
As the big apprentice emerged, nodding to her, Cinderstripe stood, the tip of her tail twitching pleasantly. "Shall we?" she mewed mildly, waiting for her companions to rise before starting off. She glanced to her companions. "How's your training been coming, Coalpaw?" she asked pleasantly, hoping to put the young tom at ease. He seemed tense, perhaps a bit nervous, but nonetheless excited to join this patrol. She hoped conversation would put everyone at ease.

24 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Cinderstripe was only a pawful of moons younger than she was, but it wasn't enough of an age gap for Hollystorm to feel any rancor over Cinderstripe leading their little patrol. Instead, she nodded, allowing Cinderstripe to dictate when they would get moving; it would be an ordinary patrol, though Hollystorm couldn't pretend she wasn't already missing the company of a certain ginger tom.
The patrol promised to be peaceful, with no surprises - until Cinderstripe asked Coalpaw about his training. It was a simple question. An easy question, but Hollystorm's tail twitched, subtle as a reed bending in a light, almost untraceable breeze, and she answered for him coolly. "He can show you, once we get closer to TreeClan's border. His hunting lessons are coming along well."
Hollystorm at least knew that much about her apprentice. Coalpaw did not excel in battle like she'd hoped, but he was a sharp hunter; if anything, his hunter's crouch reminded her of Starlingcry's. It had brought on a little satisfying nostalgia the first time she'd seen it; but Hollystorm didn't care about nostalgia. She cared about results. Coalpaw was nearly ready to become a warrior. It was time to start pushing him.
Starlingcry would expect no less.
"Let's have a little fun," Hollystorm suggested, green eyes taking on a mischievous light. "The cat who catches the least amount of prey has to change the elders' bedding when we return." Maybe a little competition would give Coalpaw the incentive he needed to show Hollystorm the desired results.

Coalpaw! NightClan Apprentice Twelve Moons
WORDS count here NOTES say something nice | Hearing Cinderstripe's question, Coalpaw answered her with a polite tone of voice. "It is going well- He stopped as Hollystorm added her own words. She suggested a bit of hunting, the one skill that Coalpaw was proud of. He took after his mother, despite having his father's eyes. Content with remaining silent, the tom nodded in agreement. He'd show off his skill at any chance.
As the three of them walked on. Coalpaw let his attention drift to the area around him. His maw opened to catch any scents in the air that wanted to linger. Even if they weren't to the border yet, he wanted to know what to expect prey wise. Unlike his siblings and a good portion of his family, Coalpaw preferred to hunt reptiles. He didn't care to eat them, but he found their rapid movements to fun and a good challenge.
He wondered for a moment if it was possible to find a small lizard or a frog. Maybe Squirrelpaw would want the frog. Flicking his ears at his mentor's words, Coalpaw returned his attention to her. She suggested a challenge. He accepted her terms with a nod of his head. "Do we start at the border or now? He asked, eager to get away and focus on his own challenge, of finding a frog for Squirrelpaw.

Cinderstripe's whiskers twtiched as Hollystorm cut off her apprentice, her golden eyes sneaking a quick glance at her clanmate. A bit sensitive, are we? she thought mischievously, maintaining her pleasant expression as she replied calmly, "Ah, I can't wait!" Hollystorm must be under a lot of pressure, she realized, with the responsibility of mentoring her leader's son. Especially with the legacy of a cat like Starlingcry hanging over her, whose disapproving gaze could probably freeze Greenleaf over.
Cinderstripe's ears perked curiously at Hollystorm's suggestion, surprised. She nodded in agreement.
Coalpaw finally spoke again, and she could hear the impatience in his voice. "Let's get closer," she replied, winking. "Prey is nice, but so are strong borders." She looked back at Coalpaw, an impish gleam in her eyes. He's far too serious for an apprentice. Poor tom probably doesn't know how to have fun. "I don't know if it's quite fair," she teased, purring, "Hollystorm must be very skilled at keeping quiet with Blackwolf for a father, eh? Like a grumpy badger, that one!"

24 Moons. She-Cat. NightClan. No I won't apologize for the fire in my eyes
Hollystorm wasn't so attached to her father and his 'infamous reputation' not to laugh at Cinderstripe's tease. The sound she made was a cross between a cynical snort and a genuine laugh. "A 'grumpy badger'? Try 'badger with a toothache'." Blackwolf's temper was second only to his skill in battle. He had never hit his kits, but he'd made it clear when he wanted to that he was displeased with one (or all) of them, or Ratfur, or anyone else that was a persistent thorn in her father's side.
"Cinderstripe's right," Hollystorm glanced at the younger she-cat, then back to Coalpaw. "We'll hunt when we reach the border."
Coalpaw's impatience was encouraged, and her eyes gleamed bright green when they settled on her apprentice. Good, let's see if he's inherited Starlingcry's hunting prowess.
"Watch out for TreeClan," Hollystorm mewed once they reached the border, renewing the scent markings on their side of the forest. "Wouldn't surprise me if one of their mousebrained apprentices decided to test their luck." She doubted it, TreeClan had been quiet lately, but Hollystorm had learned not to be surprised by the behaviors of their neighboring Clans.
It wasn't up to her to predict what happened next - just take each moment as they come, and adapt to whatever the situation turned out to be. But that didn't mean they had to be all work and no play. Hollystorm felt a spark of rebellion roar to life in her heart, as she looked into TreeClan's forests; it would cause more trouble than it was worth, but for a few heartbeats, Hollystorm wished they were all young enough - apprentices, like Coalpaw - who could get away with a little recklessness.
A little... disregard for the rules.
Hollystorm flicked her tail, signaling Coalpaw that he could begun.
Her attentions then returned to the younger she-cat, amusement in her eyes. "So, how's Slatenose?" Hollystorm could still recall that brief moment in her kithood when the Clan's deputy had taken the time to share stories. Slatenose had taught her a valuable life lesson about respect.
However, Slatenose's decision to step down had... lessened the impact of the former deputy's wisdom. Hollystorm wasn't going to say that, obviously. Even still, she was curious to know how Cinderstripe's mother was doing lately.

Coalpaw! NightClan Apprentice Fifteen Moons
WORDS 345-ish NOTES one mouse for Coal | Coalpaw chuckled to himself at the mention of Blackwolf. He wondered how Hollystorm felt that she was letting her father down by putting emotions before his training. While he'd ever mention it to the older and scarier warrior, Coalpaw wouldn't let it go. Perhaps his mother would mention it to the warrior, considering their own relationship of being past mentor and apprentice.
Flicking his tail back and forth as they traveled to the border. Coalpaw remained silent. He didn't want to be with his mentor anymore then he had to and engaging with her was a chore. He'd much rather be hunting with his mother or even his siblings.
Her warning about TreeClan had him rolling his eyes. Did she think him that foolish? Coalpaw had more respect for the rules than most apprentices and wasn't about to break any. He didn't want to upset his father or his mother by being stupid and reckless. They raised him better than that.
The signal to start hunting didn't go unnoticed and the gray tom started on his task. The sooner he got away from the chatty cats, the easier it would be for him to find something decent to hunt.
Disappearing into the sparse underbrush that grew around the border, Coalpaw melted away into the shadows. His maw opened to taste the air for any scents, there seemed to be a mouse nearby, maybe a bird or two. Remaining low to the ground the tom-cat moved forward.
He paused once when his amber eyes settled on a mouse chewing away at a seed of some kind. Gathering himself up before springing forward, Coalpaw landed a killing blow without so much as a squeak from the mouse. Proud of his smooth kill, Coalpaw buried the mouse under a few scrapped up layers of dirt.
Turning his attention back toward his 'mentor' and Cinderstripe, he checked to see what they were doing before returning to his hunt.
