Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁"Mother will you stop fussing, I am not a kit anymore " the young tom mewed at his cream and brown mother as she groomed his face with affectionate licks. Moonshine paused in her grooming of her kit to sternly look her blue eyed offspring in the eye.
" If I don't do it then you won't and I won't have any kit of mine going around looking like foxdung Wrenpaw" She scolded firmly but nevertheless stopped in her preaning of her kitten. It was only because she cared that she fussed over him but no he had to go and become a apprentice and hardly ever visit her.
Moonshine would never admit it, especially to her son but since her mate's recent passing and his moving to the apprentice den. The young queen felt rather dejected and a bit lonely.
She had decided to remain a queen once Wrenpaw started his apprenticeship, to aid the transition of the loss of her only kit. She and her mate Ashfoot had discussed at length the prospect of another litter but a patrol gone wrong left him with a unfortunate run in with Demon and he had not survived, even after Moonshine dragged his half dead body for Ottersplash to check over. The dark brown tom had not made it.
She had attempted to comfort her son in the news of his father's death but he seemed to be worryingly unaffected by the loss of the parental figure. Moonshine could not help but give her kit one last loving snuggle and purr before she sent him on his way.
Sighing in resignation the female made her way over to the fresh kill pile, upon sniffing a few items she decided that it may be wise to go and catch her own food while the sick cats were still around the healthy ones.
The observant she-cat could not help but notice the coughing in the warrior and apprentice and even unfortunately in the elder dens. All she could hope was that Wrenpaw had enough sense to avoid the sick cats, she could not bare the though of losing him as well.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Moonshine's fussing could be heard even a foxlength from the nursery. Brookfall listened to Wrenpaw's grumblings, his boisterous insistence that he didn't need his mother's help with grooming - and Moonshine countered in a way all good mothers knew to; by stating an irrefutable truth. 'If I don't do it, then you won't.'
Brookfall's whiskers twitched with amusement, brushing against the pale underbelly of the trout he was carrying. The gift was laid in the middle of the nursery, freeing up his mouth so that he could now greet everyone properly. "Careful, Wrenpaw. Something tells me the more you struggle, the longer it'll take." The scene reminded him of his mother, Lilygleam, and her efforts to tame Gorgeleap's unruly fur during their kithood. Of course, much of her doting was directed at Silverfrost - his brother had been sickly, worrying both parents about his chances of survival - but none of her offspring had been able to escape Lilygleam's attention for long.
Wrenpaw was sent on his way, and Brookfall was left alone with Moonshine. Before he went in to visit Echoshade and her two kits, Dewkit & Fernkit (his nieces), Brookfall constructed a careful tone of mourning, aware that Moonshine was going through a tough time right now. "I'm sorry for your loss, Moonshine. Ashfoot was a good warrior, taken too soon." He had not known the tom well, but that didn't matter.
Brookfall understood the importance of a kind word. Of a sympathetic ear, when cats were struggling. How could he notice these things? Even without his... talent for telling others exactly what they wanted to hear, Brookfall was perceptive. Besides, he had a persona to uphold.

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁Moonshine's bright blue eyes soon landed on the tom who had warned her kit of not squirming so much or it would take longer and she nodded her head in agreement as her pride in joy scrambled away from his oh so doting mother. The she cat was left with the tom, a face she recognised vaguely as Brookfall, a warrior of the clan and a bright smile appeared on her face at the male's arrival, that was the thing with her, she was know to fuss over everyone to a degree but with adults she knew how to be respectful.
As the male spoke her smile faltered as he bough up a still very raw topic, Ashfoot's death. " Thank you for the kind words Brookfall but like I tell Wrenpaw, StarClan just wanted him a little earlier than we thought" the words were honeyed like usual but held the hint of emotional trumoil beneath the pristine surface the female pressented, her issues were never as important as others.
She attempted to place another smile on her face but anyone could see it was a little forced, she had been so strong after her mate's death, never allowing for much comfort because then it meant he was really gone and Moonshine knew that was not true, he lived on inside the hearts of those who loved him, Wrenpaw and herself in particular.
" Congratulations are in order I believe, you are an uncle now" she purred affectionately glancing towards the nest of the fellow queen with a look of pride, as if they were her own kits, but there was a hint of longing there. Wrenpaw was perfect in her eyes but she missed having someone relying on her and loving her unconditionally like kit's so often did with their mothers.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior She was taking the 'suffer in silence' approach, so Brookfall changed his tactics. Nodding to show he understood, he let her keep her feelings to herself - his condolences weren't going to bring back her lost mate. Brookfall's relationship with and interest in StarClan were underdeveloped, but no one need know. He could be as pious as a medicine cat if the situation called for it.
What this situation called for, however, was a purr, and he happily obliged, letting the noise rumble free of his silvery-white throat. "Thank you. Dewkit and Fernkit have been a break in the cloud cover for RainClan." Of the two she-kits, Fernkit especially looked like her father, Silverfrost. Brookfall's softened affections for his extended family was not as artificial as he might have believed. They're too young for me to get attached, he'd reasoned.
They were only a moon old. He'd caught fish that were older than those little balls of downy kitten fluff. And yet... They gladdened his heart. Or perhaps that was a residual effect of their relationship with Echoshade? Echoshade was a kithood friend, and a good mother to her two offspring. It was good to see her happy.
Brookfall's gaze resettled on Moonshine, and he made his offer. "Would you like to go for a walk with me? Before the heat really sinks it's claws in. We can fish while we're out." She must have been restless without kits of her own to nurse and care for.

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁Surprise filled her expression as Brookfall made an offer for a walk, clearly noticing that she was not really one for speaking about her own loss, which she appreciated. After Ashfoot's death she had been overwhelmed with sympathy. An emotion that the soft hearted cat understood but did not nessarily like, she had to deal with the loss of her mate on her own, in her way and for that she choose to dote on her kit.
Wrenpaw had not failed to notice his mother's increasing affections and was starting to get worried about his precious mother. She needed to grieve and because of him and her thinking she had to be strong for him, she didn't allow herself to feel much grief at all.
However her mood changed from surprised to embarrassed as he mentioned fishing and she averted her gaze and flattened her ears in shame " I.. umm.. haven't been fishing for a while" As a Rainclan cat, she was embrassed to admit she had never caught many fish, Ashfoot had always done it for her.
Now with him gone she was left to deal with her inablity to catch the most basic part of the clan's diet and with her son rapidly growing into a fine young warrior, she could not help but feel inadequate to the rest of them. " I...I can't fish" she admitted in the male's ear, voice softer than a butterfly as her tears teared and her body shook with the effort to contain both embarrassment and grief.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Moonshine couldn't fish? Brookfall was quick to make sure his shock never manifested as anything stronger than a widening of his sharp yellow eyes. How was that possible, in this era, for an apprentice to earn their full name without passing a fishing assessment?
If she always brought back fish, then there was no reason to question her ability... Ashfoot must have done most of the fishing, he'd been her mentor after all. Brookfall thought the late warrior had done Moonshine a serious disservice to both her confidence and the Clan's well-being, but he hid his true feelings well.
Clearly Ashfoot's affections had gotten in the way of Moonshine's education.
Oh, but he was hardly one to go pointing claws.
An image of a beautiful calico warrioress flitted through his mind like patches of sunlight through the trees, and he willed himself not to think too much upon it. To let it go, for now. He could see her again later. One more day, whispered the voice in his mind that was stronger than his conscience.
Brookfall stepped to the she-cat, letting their pelts brush at the sides. "You don't have to worry, Moonshine. I won't tell the others, in fact, if you'll allow me to teach you how, there won't be anything to tell." What else were Clanmates for? She had confessed her little secret to him; the response that was most appropriate now was not to shout it from the mountain-tops like a piece of foxdung.
But to prove that her secret was safe with him. That he could be trusted.
Her grief was sharp, brushing against the edges of his heart in a way that all powerful emotions of sorrow did. Brookfall internally withdrew his ability to be empathetic, protecting his emotional state from a misery and state of pain he did not need. If he could avoid feeling wretched, if he could avoid feeling anything but in control, he would.

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁Moonshine kept her face neutral as the male spoke, having heard her secret but to her surprise he did not seem angry at her. Perhaps a little shocked that she had managed to fly under the radar for her fishing assessment for so long, curtesy of her mate/mentor.
Brookfall's next words however stunned the bright blue eyed she-cat into silence. He was offering to teach her? Silent as stone the female tilted her head slightly as if contemplating the answer but she knew the truth, she would love to know how to fish. To catch them as easily as her clan mates could.
Finally the female nodded her head and spoke " Oh...ahh...yes I would appreciate that" she stammered, not used to having someone know her secret and not reacting with horror as her parents did when they watched her one time and she failed to catch anything, embarrassment left her skin under her creamy fur red and she averted her gaze from the tom.
"I know it's a shock, a Rainclan cat that cannot fish, Ashfoot tried to teach me but I... got distracted way to easily back then" she explained, refusing to meet the male's gaze. She was truly laughable and the thought terrified her, what if Wrenpaw ever found out that his mother, his loving doting mother, the one the tom loved more than anything, could not do something as simple as fish? How ashamed would he feel of her then?
" Please, don't let Wrenpaw know, his confidence is already shaken with Ashfoot's death" she continued, finally looking the tom in the eyes with all the firmness of a mother scolding her kit as well as a hint of affection.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Moonshine's insistence that he withhold the truth from her son was not needed; Brookfall wouldn't have told Wrenpaw anyway. The last thing any parents would want would be to have their secrets spilled to their children; to have their place as parents undermined by a failure. Brookfall wouldn't have wanted to know what his father wasn't good at, when he'd been Wrenpaw's age; he'd wanted to keep believing in his parents as these infallible, kind, great warriors that he was lucky enough to be related to.
Wrenpaw had just lost his father. He didn't need to lose respect for his mother too.
"Not a word of it," Brookfall promised, and he took a few steps forward as if to go ahead of and slightly past her, directing Moonshine not towards the main river but towards their border with NightClan. "For privacy's sake, we'll fish near StarClan's Claws; it's a lengthy walk, unfortunately, but this also means we're less likely to be disturbed."
It would be a good place to have a clandestine meeting with an old mentor, but Brookfall knew better. Meeting her at the edge of RainClan's territory, where the scent-markers faded to nothingness at the edge of the mountains, was much more secluded. The terrain was difficult, and his paw-pads - made soft by the malleable, grassy banks along the river and his time in the water - never thanked him after those little visits, but the privacy was worth a little discomfort.
"The most laborious part about fishing," Brookfall mewed as they walked, keeping his stride even, allowing her muscles to warm up a bit before their speed increased. "Isn't hooking the fish out of the water, it's knowing when to attempt it." Brookfall glanced towards the trees, seeing the sunlight streaming through - his gaze following the path to where the light sparkled on the water. They'd find a place that would keep their shadows off the surface, and hopefully the sun out of their eyes. "Looks as though we should have no trouble seeing the fish." Brookfall smiled at Moonshine, his whiskers twitching with a bit of wry humor. "We may be called RainClan, but it's actually very difficult to fish in the rain. Give me sunny weather over stormy skies, always."

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁Moonshine was relieved when Brookfall promised to not mention her lack of fishing skills to Wrenpaw and then trotted off. However it was not in the direction she expected. Instead of heading towards the main river where the clan did most of their fishing, instead he seemed to be leading the young queen to their border with NightClan, Moonshine had patrolled here many times with Ashfoot as an apprentice and even when she was an expectant queen did she delight in their little chat as they walked together, tails entwined with the other's.
Moonshine could not help but smile at the memories that flooded her mind as she moved a little quicker to catch up to Brookfall just in time to hear an important fact, that it was not about catching the fish it was knowing when to catch it that was the key. The queen's bright blue eyes held all the excitement of an cat much younger than she, but right now lost in memories of the good times, she felt light hearted for once, she did not need to put up a facade of being strong for her son.
" Oh... okay, so how do I.. umm.. hold my paws?" She felt stupid asking the question but if there was one thing she did know is that fishing was vastly different from hunting other prey, such as water birds or mice. Moonshine offered a laught, like the chime of a bell at his play on words about Rainclan being named the way it was despite the fact that rain often made everything difficult.
" Thank you Brookfall, for doing this, it was not supposed to be your job to teach me so I appreciate it" She smiled, offering a slight nudge with her shoulder, a gentle purr rumbled from her throat.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior "If you have a paw you're more comfortable using, that will be the paw you use to catch fish with." Brookfall's steps slowed as they neared the place he had picked out; coming to a stand-still, the silvery tom held up his left paw, pads aimed down, and spread out his toes, claws unsheathed. "For me, it's my left. I try to sit or crouch so my shadow is anywhere but over the water. Then, when I see a fish come close, I hook it with my claws--" He made a neat swiping gesture for demonstration "--or scoop it out of the water if it's small enough. Large fish can be too heavy for scooping."
Looking at her to make sure she was understanding him just fine, Brookfall's yellow eyes followed her gaze to his still-raised paw, and he awkwardly set it down. Did she think it strange, that he had an extra toe on each foot? Instead of five toes on his front paws, Brookfall had six. Instead of four on his back paws, Brookfall had five. It had been easy enough to hide this fact when his paw fluff really grew out, but that didn't mean cats didn't notice.
His time in the nursery and the apprentices' den had been marked by the occasional ridicule or gawking. Trying to guide the conversation right over his deformity (which he had moronically displayed without thinking about it), Brookfall's smile reappeared. A shield thrown up every time something made him distinctly uncomfortable. "Don't thank me yet, Moonshine. We'll see if I actually have what it takes to mentor another." Brookfall chuckled, and forced himself to make eye contact, used to rejecting these feelings of discomfort for the sake of withholding his persona.

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁The blue pointed she cat watched the male with intense fascination as he so neatly demonstrated the movement she would need to prefect in order to catch fish, Moonshine stayed close to the male, her pelt lightly bushing his as he they reached their destination.
" Do you mean like this?" she lifted her right paw and swiped quickly at the air claws unsheathed. Moonshine had noticed his extra toes but paid them no mind, she had dealt with ridicule about being mated to her mentor so the fact that he was just a little different to the rest did not phase her in the slightest.
If she was honest it made her feel happy, knowing that the male had dropped his guard in her presence, even if it was only for a second. Lifting her gaze to meet his own she send him a nod of silent understanding and offered another laugh at his seemingly lack of faith in his teachinf ablitites.
" Oh hush, you will be brilliant" she said without hesitation, her skill set was words and ego building, hense why she had never been a mentor, that as she was barely a warrior a few days and she found out she was pregnant, an expecting mother to her precious son.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Moonshine had such faith in him. It made all of that hard work, all of the lies, all of figuring out the right thing to say and when to say it worth it. Brookfall allowed himself a few heartbeats to purr, appreciative. He gestured for her to redo the swiping motion with a flick of his ears, and this time watched closely. She had the technique right. It was easy to do above water. "Very good, now we'll have to try it in the river. The river is going to create resistence, especially when it's flowing quickly, so don't be afraid to use a little more strength than you used just now."
Brookfall guided her to the water's edge, ignoring the faint cries of water birds further downriver, and then carefully took two paw-steps back. It was pretty common for an apprentice to do a lot of splashing on their first fishing experiences; he believed Moonshine had figured out how to do things with minimal excess splashing, but he also knew she was rusty.
He didn't want her to feel like she had to apologize to him for getting his fur wet (it more or less came with the job description, when you were a RainClan cat), and he also wanted to give her space to figure it out on her own. She was relying on his teaching methods, but Brookfall knew sometimes the best teacher could be one's self.
Figure it out, Darkrose had told him. Use that head of yours, don't just copy everything I do. You're a warrior's apprentice, not a mockingbird. Her words had both stung and filled him with determination. Brookfall had no intention of using such cold phrasing with Moonshine, but he could pass on the same premise nevertheless.
"If you feel comfortable, try that swiping move a few more times in the water. Don't be afraid to experiment. After a while, some cats develop their own techniques." Brookfall mewed, watching placidly to see how she did.

Moonshine 30 Moons, Queen of RainClan ❁❁❁The female nodded again when Brookfall spoke and neatly she demonstrated again the motion this time with a little more force. With her ear's twitching and her bright blue eyes focused on the clear water before her Moonshine focused her attention on a small school of fish, clearly young fish that had not yet grown to their full size. while Moonshine could catch a waterbird with her eyes closed, fish were harder to predict and she decide to avoid embarrassing herself she would go after smaller, much easier prey.
Her lack of experience showed as she practised swiping at fish in the water itself, Probably scaring off the young fish she was aiming for when she spotted it, a large greenish coloured fish swimming in the water a few tail lengths away and Moonshine sprung into action.
Claws unsheathed she approached the fish but instead of swiping at the fish like Brookfall had taught her, she opted for another tactic, one more suited to land but still, as a Rainclan cat, she knew her way around water. With nothing but an ear twitch to give away her intentions, the silky furred she-cat he jumped and landed almost on top of the unaware fish.
Upon contact with the slippy flesh of the fish Moonshine's head dropped and her teeth quickly found a hold on the poor unlucky fish behind it's head. However as she went to pull the fish out of out the water she misjudged how large it actually was and slipped over likely drenching poor Brookfall on the shoreline.
However as she quickly regained her grip on the slippy prey her eyes shone like the moon they were named after, her pelt dripping with water was still as shiny as ever as she proudly dropped the fish at her teacher's paws.
Her method had been different to most and a lot more wet but she got the fish in the end and that was all that mattered. "Thank you" she mewed softly, nuzzling Brookfall with her head for no more than a second before she looked down proudly at the now deceased fish. "I did it" she added, pride shining through her normal sweet tones.

WrenpawWrenpaw stared boredly at the sun rising in the Rainclan sky. His heart, a instrument eager to send him shooting across terrain, pounded softly against his chest. Greencouch and left him mentorless and quite frankly with nothing to do. Most of Wrenpaw's afternoon's recently had been spent comforting his mother and pacing endlessly around camp, listening to the lives of other cats, and the tragedy that was brought on with sickness. He sighed, restlessly padding from paw to paw, flexing his strong talons into the soft ground. Without anything to do Wrenpaw's thoughts started to drift back to his mother, certainly still mourning Ashfoot's loss. Ashfoot. Wrenpaw's memories flooded with the thought of his father, a tom proud and tall. His father would never see him become the fine warrior he was destined to be, if he ever received another mentor, dread filled his sights. Unable to cope with the encroaching sadness flooding his mind, Wrenpaw sprung up and bolted into the queen's den looking for his mother. Instead of his mother he found an empty nest, and just as quick as he had entered, Wrenpaw left the den, following her trail like a hunter after a mouse. He ran for as long as his legs could take him and just as he began to taste iron in the back of his throat, he saw his mother. She wasn't alone. She was accompanied by a young tom whom was quickly identified by Wrenpaw's mind as Brookefall, and what's worse the two seemed to be intertwined in some deep conversation, sharing a meal. Outrage sprung quickly to Wrenpaw's eyes as he made himself known, and as much as he tried to control his anger it laced around every word he uttered, "Mother... Mom... why are you..? What about dad?.." By the end of his series of words, Wrenpaw's rage had turned into a heavy cloud of sadness, unable to understand how his mother could forget about his father so quickly. Would she forget him just as quick? Ready to start a new life?
He looked over to her, desperate to see something else and yet, the more and more he looked at Brookefall and Moonshine, the more and more dread settled into his fur.

Brookfall 22 Moons Tom RainClan Warrior Brookfall had watched, prepared to speak words of encouragement in case she hesitated - but Moonshine wasn't doing what he'd expected. Instead, and he realized two heartbeats too late that she was crouched like she was stalking land prey, the queen flung herself upon an unexpected fish. Brookfall side-stepped the resultant spray of water, so taken aback that his mask momentarily dropped, and he did not know the expected answer or reaction for this.
Fortunately, while Moonshine caught her fish, Brookfall was able to compose himself. "I'll admit, that's a technique I haven't seen before," the silvery tom's whiskers were twitching with mirth, but Moonshine's battle with the fish wasn't over yet. And he found himself taken aback for the second time in so short a fishing session.
Drenched more from the queen's efforts to haul her catch out of the water than the fish's struggles to complicate her intentions with every writhe, Brookfall looked down at his now soaked chest and neck. It was worth appreciating that he hadn't been closer - or else he might have looked as sorry as that fish in her jaws. Brookfall laughed; he didn't like an unexpected soaking, but he wasn't going to spoil the mood by telling her that.
She was basking in her triumph, and he purred his support. "Yes you did. Maybe we can perfect that method over greenleaf, when it's so warm that kind of diving will keep us cool." Of course, the downside to Moonshine's technique was that she'd pretty much scared off any other fish in this section of the river, but Brookfall accepted that. They weren't going to be out here long.
And then, the scent of the fish and river-water having masked the young tom's scent, Wrenpaw's arriving outburst caught Brookfall even more off-guard than everything up until this point. Ah, was all his thoughts could provide by way of witty commentary. Wrenpaw's gotten the wrong idea...
Brookfall's mind churned as quickly as a river in a flash flood. He couldn't tell Wrenpaw that he was teaching his mother to fish. Likewise, he couldn't allow the apprentice to think they were out here disrespecting Ashfoot's memory in so spectacular a fashion. Brookfall's compulsive lying, for once, offered a practical way out of a tricky situation.
"Your mother was showing me a new fishing technique," mewed Brookfall, weaving part of the truth with his own quick thinking. "I have trouble with the heat. So I find it difficult to sit in the sun for very long." Brookfall glanced at Moonshine, hoping she would go along with him. "Thanks to Moonshine, this greenleaf should be a little less unbearable. Your mother is very kind and very smart, Wrenpaw."
There. Would that be enough to cool some of the outrage in the apprentice's eyes? Brookfall did not like the accusatory stare. He was guilty of... other things.
