Maplebrook " We learn who we are through mistakes"
The young warrior was waiting patiently for her new apprentice to arrive at the thicket of grassland that Treeclan used as it's apprentice training grounds. The ever patient she-cat was lazily grooming her immaculatepelt from a stubborn piece of dirt. Mentally preparing a lesson for her and Fawnpaw to go over. The young female knew that she would have to teach her apprentice how to fight, even they the bright eyed warrior was not the best at the more aggressive way of resolving conflict, Maplebrook was a calm level headed cat, she hoped her apprentice may learn to think before she acted, like Maplebrook had to learn. Shadowsong had been her own mentor and he had been harsh on the female, being as she was a female mentoring a female, Maplebrook felt she would need to be firm but fair. As well as pray to Starclan for guidance when she got lost in how to properly train the young life she had been assigned by Lionstar, and while she liked the tawny male, the female was nervous, what if she let him down and Fawnpaw got hurt on her watch. The older she cat would never be able to forgive herself, Fawn

Fawnpaw 7 MOONS - SHE-CAT - TREECLANThe excitement of last night's ceremony had made it almost impossible to fall asleep. Fawnpaw had tossed and turned in her nest, unable to get her thoughts to settle long enough to drift off to bed. She'd heard Amberpaw squirming a bit too. Sleeping with her nurserymates helped put Fawnpaw at ease, but that didn't mean she wasn't missing Moonfeather. Maybe she'd imagined it, but she thought she'd caught a glimpse of her mother in the den entrance, checking up on them.
Fawnpaw didn't roll out of bed, rather, she was prodded awake by Finchpaw, who looked worried. "You know your mentor just left without you, right?" Finchpaw must've gotten up early, he was the deputy's apprentice, after all.
Fawnpaw's jaw had dropped, and with a horrified squeal, the kitten wriggled out of her mossbed. Amberpaw was gone too! Oh no oh no, did I sleep in? Did I miss Maplebrook calling for me?
Fawnpaw leaped over Thornpaw's still-sleeping form, her heart as active as a woodpecker. "I'm so sorry Maplebrook, I—"
Where was she? The gray and black tabby was nowhere to be seen, so Fawnpaw padded quickly to a nearby warrior, a pale tom who bore some resemblance to Lionstar. "Excuse me, have you seen Maplebrook?"
Sprucefur stopped his grooming, frowning. "She's still sleeping." The frown softened into an understanding smile. "The dawn patrol just left, you're up quite early."
The cream-coated kitten fluffed up indignantly. After a hasty 'thanks!' to Sprucefur, she returned to the apprentices' den, and gave Finchpaw a swat right on his fluffy ginger-and-white face. "You're terrible! I nearly jumped out of my fur because of you!"
Finchpaw laughed, settling back into his own nest.
"SHHH," hissed one of the older apprentices. Owlpaw. He gave her a cold stare from his nest.
Fawnpaw winced, and went back to her nest, still glaring needles at Finchpaw for his little joke. I'll get you back tomorrow morning. I bet Thornpaw will help me. No sooner had she thought this then she had dozed off again, napping with her paws tucked under her body to stay warm.
It felt like no time at all, that Maplebrook was gently waking her up, told her to get something to eat and then meet her in the hidden thicket.
Wow, we're starting with battle training first thing? Fawnpaw had to force herself not to skip breakfast just to see what today's lesson would be about. After sneaking away to give her mother, Moonfeather, a quick purring nuzzle, Fawnpaw set paw outside of camp for the first time since joining TreeClan.
This is so exciting. The way the light filtered through the leafy boughs above, scattering spots of sunlight on the ground, filled Fawnpaw with energy. The kitten hesitated, gazing, bewildered into the forest. "...Which way is the hidden thicket?" Fawnpaw's ears pinned back. Uh oh. She didn't know the way. Fawnpaw glanced nervously back towards the apprentices den.
What do I do now? I don't recognize anything! Fawnpaw parted her jaws, trying to scent for Maplebrook, but the forest had so many aromas, she quickly got confused. Maplebrook 20 Moons, She-Cat, Warrior of Treeclan, Mentor of Fawnpaw "We are who we are" Maplebrook was concerned, she had woken her apprentice, told her to get something to eat and meet her at the thicket, the grey and black tabby's tail flicked with concern as she rose to her paw's once more and headed back towards camp. Upon arrival the young mentor immediately tracked down her small apprentice and with an affectionate nudge sat down beside the seemingly bewildered young cat.
" I had considered battle training today but maybe we keep it simple and start with territory observation first does that sound better?' The female spoke gently to her apprentice, a hint of amusement in her emerald gaze. Maplebrook felt a little silly, how could she expect the female to know where the thicket was when she was starting her off on one of the more difficult tasks to master, well they were for Maplebrook. The young mentor was starting to accept that she was no longer in training, Fawnpaw was different that she was and the older female knew she may have to spend time with her apprentice outside of training to get to know the kitten's strenghts and weakness.
Direction, was clearly one if one was to ask Maplebrook, but that she kept to herself, she could not critisise the young female for her own lack of teaching. This was a learning experience for them both and Maplebrook was hopeful her apprentice would be proud of how far she had come as Maplebrook was of herself when she was that age. Tag: Fawn

Fawnpaw 7 MOONS - SHE-CAT - TREECLANMaplebrook reappeared after a few more confused minutes spent idling at the edge of camp. Fawnpaw leaped forward, landing neatly in front of her mentor with an obviously relieved tone. "That sounds a lot better. Lionstar doesn't expect all apprentices to just go places without knowing where they are first, does he?" She had inherited her mother's analytical nature, able to pick apart the words of others to make sure they were logically sound all the way through.
Unaware that each mentoring style was different, Fawnpaw was of the impression that Lionstar had a... a... curriculum of sorts. Maybe Thornpaw and Finchpaw and Amberpaw were doing battle training right now. Though their mentors had probably walked them to the hidden thicket.
"Meadowleaf taught us place names in the nursery," she mewed, referring to the former deputy before Gorsetail who had stepped down to have kits. They would be born any day now. Fawnpaw, eager to show off some of her knowledge, cleared her throat and raised her chin. "The hidden thicket, the sparkling brook, the great maple, the shallow marsh, and the wildflower clearing." Fawnpaw couldn't recall the names of their border with LightningClan or NightClan, just that she was supposed to recognize them by scent. Sort of.
Thornpaw kept prodding her tail with his claws when she'd been trying to listen. As we soared above the town that never loved me I realized I finally had a family ❋ 215 Words ❋ @kahani ❋ Notes

Maplebrook "Creativity is intelligence having fun" The silver tabby she-cat smiled softly as her seemingly relieved apprentice approached her with kithood delight but her words had the older cat frown. Wasn't she taught as a kit to follow scents? They as were the bases of hunting and Maplebrook sighed in resignation, she would have to teach her apprentice the basics if she wanted her to graduate a fully fledged warrior.
Soon however her little apprentice was speaking of the places in the territory that she knew and a warm smile brushed over Maplebrook's face as the former deputy Meadowleaf was mentioned. Maplebrook knew the older she-cat well and was rather fond of the other female. However, Maplebrook would give credit where it was due and since being promoted to deputy, Gorsetail had been a valuable asset in the leadership of Treeclan. Maplebrook soon switched her attention back to her young cream apprentice with a soft purr of approval.
" Well then young Fawnpaw, I shall take you on a tour of the territory so you know where those places are instead of just their names" The female spoke in a soft manner, but her sweet tones held a little hint of authority as if the matter was not up for discussion. Lionstar had no set way of teaching the apprentices, each mentor was left to determine the best way of teaching the future warriors of the clan. Maplebrook figured that her teaching method's would have to be intertaining to hold a kit's short attention span and well as informative and engaging, an important step in mentoring was encouraging a kit's confidence, let them show what they knew and build the bases they would need for warriorhood from there.
"Let's start with the hidden thicket, it's pretty close but you must pay attention to your surroundings, the scent of the bushes and trees, each is unique. Remember that observation is key when doing patrols" The she-cat began her lesson as she gently nudged the young kitten towards the path to the thicket, letting her go infront allowed for a much clearer view of the landscape.

Fawnpaw 7 MOONS - SHE-CAT - TREECLANThe whole world was opening up before her. With Maplebrook allowing her to go first, Fawnpaw looked a bit sheepish for all of two seconds, and then her natural interest in TreeClan's territory drove her paws forward. She listened with rapt attention, not just to her mentor, but for everything Maplebrook had pointed out. Observation is key. Repeating this inside her head to make sure it sunk in, Fawnpaw walked on light gray-shaded paws, her nose actively working, her ears twitching to and fro, as she got herself acquainted with the environment.
Though she hardly knew the names of some of these trees, and could not match their names to any descriptions her Clanmates gave her, Fawnpaw didn't focus on that. She had to get a good base, then get the details down. No cat's expected to remember every single thing they learn after the first time, she thought ardently, tail-tip twitching.
Careful not to veer off course, Fawnpaw noticed the way the vegetation grew thicker, and the trees grew thinner - placed closer together. It reminded Fawnpaw of a bird's nest, the way it all seemed to interlock. "Is this the thicket? How do we get in?" Fawnpaw was a slender kitten, small for her age but healthy. Even so, bright green eyes looked questioningly from Maplebrook to the thicket, unable to find the entrance. Maplebrook
20 Moons, She-Cat, Warrior of Treeclan, Mentor of Fawnpaw
Maplebrook paused a few second before her young apprentice paused, near the entrance to the thicket to listern for the sound of voices, she was aware that this was likely going to be the place where the sick cats of Treeclan would go. Maple had been through greencough before and once her body fought off the infection she was not at risk of catching it again. The silky tabby cat moved with fluid motions to a small, undectable to the untrained eye, gap in the brambles and thorns that surrounded the area.
" The entrance is here, pleas understand I don't expect you all to remember this the first time, We will be doing patrols nearly every training season until you can tell me everyplace in the territory and what it looks like and how to get there from the camp" She lectured softly, trying her best to not be overbearing with her strange way of mentoring. If the she-cat was honest she had not idea what she was supposed to do, she would have to visit Lionstar after she finished with Fawnpaw and dicusss ways to better mentor her apprentice. She had managed to convince another clan member to take her morning chores since she had apprentice training but once sunhigh hit she would send her student off home for lunch and attend to her warrior duties.

Fawnpaw 7 MOONS - SHE-CAT - TREECLANThere? That's the entrance? Fawnpaw felt stupid for not having noticed it right away, and then chastized herself for feeling that way. It's called the hidden thicket for a reason, you fluffbrain. Maybe some of Thornpaw's competitiveness was rubbing off on her? Fawnpaw gave her pelt a good shake, and followed Maplebrook inside, ears rotating and spinning, catching and cataloguing every interesting new sound. It was strange how the world felt so different in here; even the air seemed new, cool and dark with so much cover.
Fawnpaw's paws treaded over dense, short grass, her gray-shaded feet moving lightly over the training area. She could see flattened areas in the grasses and snapped twigs where cats had fought, and clumsily collided with the 'walls' of the arena. This place is a lot bigger than I expected. It could hold a few apprentices and their mentors before it really became a tight fit.
Tuning back in to the tabby warrioress, Fawnpaw sat down, intent upon catching Maplebrook's every word. "I won't let you down, Maplebrook!" It wouldn't be long before the she-cat would be given instructions to meet Maplebrook at some designated place, and actually be able to get there by herself.
Fawnpaw didn't like being clueless about her surroundings. A good student, no a good warrior, had to know the territory like the back of her paw. Vowing to hold out as long as she could until lunch or sore paws prevented her from taking another step, Fawnpaw kept up with Maplebrook as the territory tour continued.
I can't wait to tell Amberpaw and Aspenpaw all about this when I get back. She looked forward to swapping "first day" stories with the other apprentices later tonight.
