Returning to the nursery, to a place of sanctuary and warmth, put a soft bounce in Cloudypaw's step. She greeted the queens in her soft voice, turned pleasant by the good company. She remembered many of them - Redwind and Poppythorn - though Bluerose was a relatively new addition. Dipping her head respectfully to the unfamiliar face, Cloudypaw set down the moss ball she had been carrying, and started to clean up the nursery.
There were bits of feathers and rabbit fluff everywhere - something that had delighted her as a kit. It had been to her great dismay to find out that the apprentices' den wasn't likewise stuffed with soft, pleasant things. Cloudypaw knew they were training to be warriors, but she couldn't help her own softness. Fighting was... it was hard for her.
Being here in the nursery, though, she liked the peaceful atmosphere and the warmth that seemed to radiate from every cat present. Cloudypaw couldn't help but purr a little, batting the soiled moss out of the den, careful to avoid the tumbling kits that were squealing nearby. I... I think I want to be a queen. That seemed like the best way for her to serve her Clan, to nurture the next generation of warriors. Uncertain who she could share this revelation with, Cloudypaw for a moment felt happy just to have reached a decision.
What did she tell Nightstep, though? He couldn't very well keep training her to be a warrior if she wasn't really going to be one, could he?

There was one kit who didn't play, one kit who didn't tumble and fight with the other kits for fun. Instead she watched, sitting close by, her eyes fixed on the other kits as they played. She paid hardly any attention to Cloudypaw. "Be careful, don't get hurt." She stood up slowly and walked out the nursery with a sigh. She let out a soft sigh and sat down. As usual, she turned towards the medicine cat den and stared towards it. One day, she would be a medicine cat. It was her dream to be one, she had to be one. It was the only thing she fought about. She spoke quietly to herself, not really paying any attention to Cloudypaw who stood nearby. "I want to be a medicine cat." She continued to watch the medicine cat den closely, before turning around and looking back to the kits who played. After making sure they were ok, she turned back to the medicine cat den once more and stared at it. She hoped to see Kindleflare, she admired her so much, to be a medicine cat apprentice, she was so lucky. She looked up to her, she wanted to be just like her one day. She smiled to herself as she continued to watch. Fawn

"Be careful, don't get hurt."
As if someone had taken a scene from her kithood, Cloudypaw turned to the sound of the little she-kit's voice, at once feeling like Mina again, watching her siblings tumble and wrestle over one another in a way that looked a little too aggressive to the runt of the litter. Cloudypaw glanced down and saw Bluerose's daughter, Rosekit, leave the nursery with a sigh as if the behavior of the other kits was tiresome - even to one so young.
Cloudypaw, her curiosity momentarily getting the best of her, followed on soft steps out of the nursery, sitting close by but not so close as to crowd the kitten. Just about to ask what Rosekit was looking at, the she-cat whispered under her breath the answer.
"I want to be a medicine cat."
Emitting a soft, supportive purr, Cloudypaw smiled as she caught Rosekit's eye. "You want to be a medicine cat? That's wonderful, Rosekit. Medicine cats are amazing. Do you want to meet Kindleflare?" Normally timid and discreet, Cloudypaw did not yet realize her own bravery in the presence of the kitten. It likely had something to do with being in such close proximity to the nursery, and her personal revelation but a moment ago.
Willing to go fetch Kindleflare for her and make the other she-cat aware of her tiny, curious little audience, Cloudypaw momentarily forgot about Rookfrost. Until she saw him, in all of his foreboding, ailing presence, his icy stare sweeping over the two of them like a claw-sharp winter wind. Cloudypaw flinched and wrapped her tail protectively around Rosekit without even thinking about it - but the moment was over, and she relaxed. "Sorry," was her whispered apology, in case she'd startled her.

Rosekit looked to Cloudypaw and gave a small smile as she spoke. Rosekit admired Kindleflame more than she did Rookfrost. She looked to the medicine cat and then gave a soft nod. If she could get to meet Kindleflame, that would make her day, her week even, or even her moon! She wanted to meet and get a chance to talk to Kindleflame so badly, to learn everything she could, to know the different herbs, to help Kindleflame help others, to collect herbs, to treat wounds, it was everything she wanted. She focused back to Cloudypaw with a wide smile. "Yes please! I would love to meet Kindleflame. I admire her so much! I want to be just like her one day! To help other cats, to collect herbs, heal wounds, make everyone happy, it's all I want." She smiled brightly, before looking back to the nursery with wide eyes full of excitement and hope. To get a chance to meet Rookfrost and Kindlfame, that would be a dream come true! Fawn

"Yes please! I would love to meet Kindleflare. I admire her so much! I want to be just like her one day! To help other cats, to collect herbs, heal wounds, make everyone happy, it's all I want."
The enthusiasm from Rosekit was enough to make some of Cloudypaw's apprehension subside. With an encouraging, warm look, Cloudypaw made her way cautiously over to the medicine cat apprentice's den. With Rookfrost having disappeared back inside, Cloudypaw's timidity was renewed when she caught a glimpse of him moving around in the old fox den like a shadow come to life.
"K-K-Kindleflare?" She mewed, wincing and then trying again at a volume that was above a stammered whisper. "Kindleflare? It's Cloudypaw. Will you come to the nursery please? Nothing's wrong, there's j-just someone who wants to meet you." She liked Kindleflare a lot. The ginger she-cat was far, far nicer than Rookfrost, she seemed so approachable and as if she genuinely cared what happened to them all.
It was nice to have an unbiased healer looking after the whole Clan.
Rather than wait for confirmation, Cloudypaw hurried back to Rosekit's side, smiling a bit. "I think she'll come over. Just be patient."

With LightningClan's black specter resting in his nest near the back of the den, Kindleflare had taken it upon herself to quietly sort through their herbs. She was in the midst of pulling together a small herb set for Rookfrost's awakening, depositing a small spattering on dandelion leaves onto the wide frame of a growing herb bundle, when something caught her attention. It began as a flickering shadow in the entrance, and a stammering voice. Ginger ears pricked forward, squinting slightly toward the entrance as a timid voice spoke up a little more clearly.
When Cloudypaw's voice mentioned the nursery, she felt momentary panic grip her; was one of the kits sick? Did they need her help? But Cloudypaw was quick to reassure her there was nothing of grave importance. The request did throw her off guard slightly, Kindelflare's amber eyes blinking in confusion. "O-Oh, um.. Of course, just a moment!" She called back quietly, not entirely sure if the apprentice had heard her or not. Quickly tucking the herbs back into their respective spots, Kindleflare rose to her paws and emerged from the darkness of the medicine cat's den with a brief stretch.
Flicking her tail pleasantly, Kindleflare's gentle gaze explored the camp, looking for the familiar shape of her brother's apprentice, Cloudypaw. She located the timid she-cat in time, white paws picking up a quick trot to join Cloudypaw and the kit at her side. The near-mint like scent of juniper wafted forth as she slowed to a stop, the herb-medley a common accompanying aroma for the ginger and white tabby she-cat. Glancing a little uncertainly between the two younger cats before her, she offered a smile. "Hi, Cloudypaw." She mewed with a nod before looking at the kit, pulling forth her name from memory. "Hi, Rosekit. Is... Everything alright?" She asked. |

Rosekit gave a soft nod to Cloudypaw, her tail swishing excitedly at the thought that she may meet Kindleflare. She waited, and after a few moments, Cloudypaw came back. Rosekit tail swished excitedly, and was about to speak when she saw Kindleflare in the distance. Her eyes widened and she stood up with excitement. When she actually came to speak to her she had to stop herself from running around like a crazed kit. "You came! I didn't think you would come! You are so cool! One day, when I grow up I want to be JUST like you! What is it like? To be apprenticed to Rookfrost I mean? Tell me everything! I want to know! Is it hard? Is it scary sometimes? I've always wanted to be a medicine cat one day! To help others just like you! You are the greatest cat ever Kindleflare! I watch you all the time when you leave your den! I always stare at the medicine cat den hoping to see you! You are SO lucky Kindleflare! To have all of your dreams come true! I really wish I was you right now! I am so Jealous Kindleflare!" Rosekit practically jumped up and down as she spoke, she was so excited right now, it felt like she could talk for hours without stopping. She had so much to ask, so much to talk about, one day wouldn't be enough for her! She needed more! Of course, she knew just how busy she was, so she wouldn't get too long but she was here now! She could ask as many questions as she could possibly ask! FawnBlooRey DVD

A soft surge of happiness swept over Cloudypaw like a tide. It warmed the she-cat to the tips of her whiskers to see Rosekit so enthusiastic about meeting Kindleflare - and it was especially kind of the busy medicine cat to take a moment out of her day to visit.
"Please speak a little quieter, Rosekit," Cloudypaw reprimanded her gently, touching the kitten's flank with her tail. "We don't want to disturb R-Rookfrost or anyone else." And I don't know if Kindleflare is shy like me. Rosekit's enthusiasm might seem a little overwhelming.
Watching the interactions unfold, her expression kind and motherly as her gaze swept from ginger cat to ginger kitten, a sense of longing seemed to unfold like a flower in springtime. How joyful would it be, to stand here with her own kits some day? Introducing them to the medicine cat? Guiding them and nurturing them to the best of her abilities? Cloudypaw purred, hopeful of the future.

Kindleflare's head jerked up slightly in a rush of alarm as Rosekit seemed to practically vibrate with what she could only assume to be excitement. Although Kindleflare was... Flattered that the she-kit seemed to think so highly of her, it also left Kindleflare with a deep pit of nervousness in her belly. Sh-She's b-been watching m-me? She w-wants to b-be just l-like me? She thought to herself in a panic, amber eyes wide as she blinked down at the little kit. I'm... H-Hardly a r-role model... Came the self-conscious voice ever present in her mind. Her tail flicked uncertainly as she stole a glance toward Cloudypaw.
When the apprentice stepped up to gently remind Rosekit to lower her voice, Kindleflare offered her brother's apprentice an appreciative smile. Clearing her throat awkwardly, Kindleflare's gaze slid back to the small she-kit gazing expectantly up at her. "U-Um well.. R-Rookfrost is... He knows a lot of things relating t-to being a medicine cat." She stammered uncertainly. "To b-be honest... It c-can be scary, kn-knowing that m-my actions can make a d-difference in s-someone's life." With a shuffle of her white forepaws, Kindleflare forced herself to continue.
"I-In the beginning I... D-Didn't think I c-could memor-rize all the herbs R-Rookfrost pointed out. There are... So m-many, and each of them d-do a different thing but... I found a w-way, and n-now I use them to help others. I h-help others, which is... N-Never something I thought I would be able to do." She smiled softly at Rosekit, hoping the answer would be good enough to ease some of the kit's wonder. |

"You're Amazing!" Were the words that came out of Rosekit's mouth. She found Kindleflare fascinating. She wanted to be just like her one day. She found Kindleflare to be so lucky, being a medicine cat apprentice, and soon to be a full medicine cat whenever she was ready! She stood up quickly and gave a bright smile. "Have you chosen an apprentice yet? You need an apprentice when you become full medicine cat, right? Don't worry! If you didn't choose me, I would just keep watching you until I was ready!" She continued to give a bright smile, full of excitement and hope. Her tail swished gently side to side as she did. Rosekit really wanted to work beside Kindleflare, but if perhaps she wasn't chosen, sure, she would be disappointed but she had made a promise to herself that she wouldn't give up hope. She would always watch Kindleflare. FawnBlooRey DVD

Cloudypaw was happy just to witness the exchange between excited kit and shy medicine cat. Her tail-tip tapped the ground softly, not a sound made as if afraid even the littlest bit of noise would spoil this moment. Does she stutter like I do, because Rookfrost is her mentor? Cloudypaw had been a kit when Kindleflare had become Rookfrost's apprentice -- or had she always held that rank? I can't remember...
Cloudypaw didn't blame her or think ill of her for the nervous tic. How could she? Any cat serving under Rookfrost would probably talk that way too, and her own voice quaivered with uncertainty on too many occasions to count.
Sharing in Rosekit's admiration for the smart, dedicated healer, Cloudypaw purred gently. "I don't think I could do what you do, Kindleflare. Nightstep must be very proud." I hope I can make him as proud of me as he is of his sister. Badly wanting her mentor's approval, Cloudypaw cast a guilty glance in the direction of the warriors' den, as if expecting the panther-like tom to appear and pull her away from training.
Her desire to stay with Rosekit and Kindleflare warred with her need to earn Nightstep's pride. Cloudypaw kneaded the ground uneasily, torn between those two wants. Maybe I should find him, so Rosekit and Kindleflare can talk by themselves? The kit obviously didn't need her help talking to Kindleflare, her questions seemed unending and Kindleflare seemed kind enough to answer them all.
Cloudypaw didn’t know what she could add to the conversation.
