Menacing eyes glittered through the gaps in the woodland. Few had decided to stay after Stormstar's ultimatum, but they all had their reasons. Swanfeather would not be permitted to return to her position, so here the she-cat remained, though her claws were sheathed.
Surgeclaw prowled, his ears twitching and rotating as if expecting at any moment to hear the footsteps of Stormstar's battalion come to ichase them off' for good. He had no intention of making it easy. Looking at the faces of the four other cats - Leopardyowl, his mate Petalfall, their son Salmonclaw, Shadefrost and Darkrose - it was clear that they shared his sentiment.
Leopardyowl had gone ahead to spy upon the approaching group; with a hurried stride, the spotted warrior reappeared, hissing at the group. "They're coming!"
Surgeclaw's muscles rippled beneath his pelt; Darkrose and Leopardyowl took to the center, while the rest hid in the bushes around the cove. Just like they'd planned. As soon as Stormstar's chosen ones arrived, they would be ambushed. Ambushed by cats who weren't afraid to kill their Clanmates.
If we can defeat the weaklings and attack Stormstar ourselves, maybe we can whittle those lives down to nothing! Surgeclaw held his breath, hearing the faint rustle of approaching pawsteps. It was true, RainClan did not fight amongst trees - not normally, but the Purists, or at least those who still had the guts to call themselves Purists and fight for what it stood for, had spent many moons living here. They had adapted. They had grown wise, and they had grown dangerous.
Whether outnumbered by the Loyalists or not, this would hardly be an easy fight.

STORMHEART After his patrol returned from the wooded cove, followed by several dejected and uncomfortable Purists, STomrstar had gone straight to his den to sleep. He needed to recover t=from the harrowing leader ceremony and trip to the wooded cove. After all he would be making another one soon.
Once he had managed some rest, he sent Rushwhisker to rest as well, promising him a conversation after the battle, as he knew the tom felt deeply uncomfortable about new appointment. For now however, it was important to focus on the coming battle.
Most of the purists had returned by Sundown, all the ones he expected to return. They milled anxiously in camp, greeting and reuniting with friends and comrades. In some cases apologizing. Stormstar still caught glares and a measure of hostility. He would need to address that when he returned.
As the last light of the sun flashed over the waters surrounding camp, Stormstar leaped onto the River Stone.
"All cats old enough to swim gather before the River Stone for a clan meeting!"
He waited for all his warriors to gather before him, noting some new apprentice aged faces among the crowd of the returned Purists. He would have to deal with them later as well.
"We are glad to welcome back our extranged brethren. But there is still the matter of the murderers. It is time to drive them from our home once and for all. I have chosen my patrol, the rest of you must work on expanding the dens once again to accommodate more cats." He waited to see nods of ascent from his senior warriors. "Jaycry, Ashpaw, Russethawk, Minnowsplash, Duststorm and Owlflight, follow me to the wooded cove."
With that he landed off the stone with a thud and took off at a loping pace, broken only by the river crossing.
There were no inspirational words this time, no warnings. Only battle, only blood, only victory by Starclan's will.
Arriving at the grove, Stormstar saw who was arrayed against him, although Swanfeather was curiously not hostile. So the Grey and white leader stepped forward.
"You have remained on Rainclan land past the deadline. Now you must leave, or we will force you to leave."
Stormstar was met with silence. No surprise there. However before Stormstar could order his patrol to attack, Leopardyowl surged forward, screeching at him. The battle was on.
Stormstar sprung back, arching up and fluffing out his fur instantly to present the biggest frint he could. Leopardyowl spat murderous words at him, but he did not dignify them with a response, instead, lunging forward to wrap his paws around Leopardyowl's throat, sending them tumbling to the ground. Both toms snapped at each other's throats, faces, ears. Their back claws ripped at each others bellies. Thanks to STormstar's thick fur, few of the blows drew blood or broke skin, although tufts of ghostly fur were spraying out from him for sure. As big as he was, Stormstar had to work to avoid getting his throat stuck tight in Leopardyowl's jaws. Ears pinned to his head, tail lashing behind him, STormstar tumbled across the clearing battering at Leopardyowl. Stormstar managed to hook fang one of Leopardyowl's cheeks, ripping along furrow through it. The tom's yowls were muffled by mouthfuls of Stormstar's fur which he had managed to get from Stormstar's thick ruff.
Eventually they broke apart and stood again spitting and hissing at each other for a few moments before Stormstar switched tactics. Feinting sideways he got Leopardyowl, tired and not having fully recovered from his previous battles on an uncomfortable footing. Stormstar knocked him over easily, planting his claws in the hollows of the other tom's shoulders with an easy access at his throat.
Everything seemed to slow, like the river in Leafbare when it was half-frozen. Stormstar stared down at the chilling rabid look in Leopardyowl's eyes. Inside of STormstar, emotions and choices raged. Justice demanded the tom's death, Forgiveness demanded his release, but Honor.... Honor was halfway between. What to do, the first major choice of Stormstar's leadership just had to involve a decision between life and death.
After an agonizing few seconds Stormstar dug his claws in, snarling, reaching down with jaws open to Leopardyowl's throat... and just breathed. He pulled up again, and although the rabid hatred was still there Leopardyowl had stilled. Slowly, Stormstar let up and stepped back. "I spared you, against Starclan's better judgement. Go, this is my last mercy." With a fierce growl, Leopardyowl slunk away, bleeding from various scratches and the tear in his cheek. I'm not standing still. I am lying in wait. background image | 799 | Hellion Fawn @zen @sparrowkeeper @marshymutt @jem BlooRey DVD Amber | If whoever is fighting Petalfall kills her, Leopardyowl may go back to fighting Stormstar, if not they may escape together |table by phoenix

I have changed, I have changed, just like you, just like you...
Stormstar's patrol had brought plenty of purists back with him and Ashpaw stayed beside Bitternwing and watched them interact with her fellow loyalists. There were some relieved reunions, but there were also plenty of mistrustful glares, such as the one she was giving them all. These cats had lived among the one that killed Bitternwing's father, had been aligned with him, led by him. She wasn't planning to leave Bitternwing's side. How was she supposed to trust these cats not to hurt her friend simply for who her parents were?
She noticed that she did not see her father among the returned purists. Not initially. But the white furred warrior padded back into camp as the sun began to set, his head held high and proud as though he had done nothing wrong and had nothing to be ashamed of. Ashpaw's tail lashed as she saw him, though part of her was grateful that he had returned. Maybe there was hope for him. Maybe... it was only his pride that had kept him from returning right away. Surely he had been as horrified as any cat to find out he was living with murderers? That Surgeclaw was one of them.
Her ears twitched back uncomfortably. It was easier for him, though. He didn't share blood with the murderer. Surgeclaw was Eelpebble's brother, not his. She stared down at her paws as she stood with Bitternwing, her eyes suddenly going wide as the setting sun cast her white paws in a reddish hue, as though old blood stained them. She took a step back, her heart thudding with momentary panic until she realized the reddish light was bathing the entire camp. It wasn't just her. She sat heavily, giving her chest fur a few reassuring licks. She wasn't a murderer, no matter who she was related to. She was nothing like Surgeclaw.
The red light faded and Stormstar called the Clan together. Ashpaw remained beside Bitternwing, Rushwhisker on her other side, as their new leader called out the names of his battle patrol. Ashpaw's ears angled forward as she heard her own name called. She glanced over at Bitternwing and Rushwhisker, hesitant to leave them with all these possible traitors milling about. But they would be all right together. Besides, this was her chance to face Surgeclaw, to make him pay for what he'd done. “Stay safe,” she mewed quietly to them both before she turned to follow Stormstar out of camp.
Her heart pounded with her steps, racing with her paws as she thundered on behind Stormstar, her fury growing to a roar in her ears, drowning out the sounds of anything else around her. It wasn't like her, she was so good at keeping her emotions in check, so good at staying calm, but this... this was just too much. How could she have finally come home only for her Clanmates to start murdering each other? This wasn't how it was supposed to be. Everything was wrong, so very wrong.
She forced herself to a stop as the patrol plunged into the cove, suddenly becoming aware of Russethawk by her side. She cast a quick glance at the ruddy tom before Stormstar issued the final warning to the cats that had remained. Her pelt prickled uneasily and her claws slid from their sheathes as a moment of silence lapsed between the two groups. Then Leopardyowl screeched and launched himself at Stormstar, and from the undergrowth at the edge of the cove, the remaining purists raced forward, surrounding their patrol and leaping for the nearest enemy.
Ashpaw turned, seeking one familiar pelt, dodging Darkrose as she tried to tackle her to the ground. The other she-cat sailed past her and Duststorm took the opportunity to leap for her, but Ashpaw was no longer paying them any attention. Her gaze locked on Surgeclaw as he fought beside Salmonclaw against Minnowsplash and her paws were moving before she even had time to think. Her claws dug into the earth, propelling her forward as fast as she could manage until she was screeching and bowling right into her uncle, knocking him away from Minnowsplash before he even had a chance to land a strike, “TRAITOR!”
Surgeclaw whipped around as she lunged forward with two quick strikes, catching his cheek in her claws with the first, and then his ear as he pulled away from the second strike. He snarled back at her, surging forward to use his larger frame and brute strength against her until he had her on the ground, “You're the traitor! You have pure blood! You should have joined us!” He punctuated each statement by battering at her with his hind paws as she in turn kicked up at him, trying to get him off. “Your father too! He left! Weak, pathetic, traitors, ALL OF YOU!”
She sank her teeth into one of his forelegs, biting as hard as she could, the stinging pain of the scratches scoring her side feeding her fury along with his words. He screeched in pain as her fangs sank in deep until she felt bone and he flailed and tugged trying to get her to release him. At last she did and he stumbled back, unbalanced. She took her chance and leaped for him, the two of them tumbling toward the pool in the middle of the cove. Her claws dug in, she felt fur and flesh tear beneath her paws, but then he was using his superior strength against her. Water seeped into her pelt and her head was plunged beneath the surface of the pool, a strong paw pressing down on her cheek as she struggled for freedom.
I'm still alive, I'm still alive, I cannot apologize, no....

42 Moons | RainClan | Tom | Senior Warrior Duststorm was bowled over by Darkrose, the she-cat having surprised the young warrior with her ferocity. Russethawk slashed at her from shoulder to flank, his attacks not as... not as fierce as they should have been. He couldn't let go of the reality that they were fighting former Clanmates. Clanmates with twisted ideas of blood purity and 'worth' based on this, but Clanmates nevertheless. This kind of sympathy was going to get him killed one of these days - maybe now, he thought with grim detachment as Darkrose retaliated with a swipe across his muzzle that had him snarling in pain - but he could not help who he was.
There was a time to ruminate over the decisions of the Purists - but now wasn't that time. Russethawk was tired of trying to think of justifications for their actions. And for three of these cats? There were no excuses good enough to make up for what they had done. Feeling Darkrose lunge for his chest, he rolled to the side and threw his shoulder into her flank, knocking the breath out of her body and sending her sprawling into the grass nearby. Duststorm resumed the fight with her, and Russethawk, his blood roaring in his ears, was given a chance to grasp onto his surroundings.
Stormstar was grappling with Leopardyowl - the spotted menace was losing, clearly - Owlflight fought Petalfall, and Ashpaw was--
Russethawk's heart smashed against his chest and his paws carried him towards Surgeclaw, watching the tabby and white she-cat flail under the cruel weight of her uncle's claws, the murderer having pushed his niece's head under water. Russsethawk yowled with rage, speechless at the tom's actions, letting his claws shredding Surgeclaw's back do all the talking for him.
"She's your kin, you rotten piece of foxdung!" He hissed by Surgeclaw's ear, bowling the cat off of Ashpaw so hard, he felt his shoulder twist in a painful jolt. Surgeclaw, blood dripping down his flanks, quickly regained his balance, his narrowed, murderous stare meeting Russethawk's impassioned fury. Surgeclaw sneered, able to see Ashpaw coughing behind him. "She's not my kin any more."
Surgeclaw launched himself at Russethawk, and the ruddy warrior realized a second too late that he was slower than Surgeclaw. Hunting and living in the wooded cove for so long, the brutal warrior's fighting style had changed. He was better suited to land now, and Russethawk felt sluggish, heavy without the current around him or the wet sand of the sand bar under paw. Surgeclaw's teeth bit into his scruff as the tom landed on top of him, and Russethawk's own jaws snapped together painfully as his chin hit the grass below. He struggled to get out from under the murderous tom's grasp, and his pulse quickened as he felt Surgeclaw start to tear at his neck fur, as if trying to get through the layers to make sure he could sink his teeth into something substantial.
Russethawk writhed, desperate to escape what was about to become a finishing, fatal move.

Minnowsplash had never wanted to be a part of this battle. And now, horror filled her eyes as she backpedaled, faced by both Surgeclaw and Salmonclaw. She'd marked herself the loser when Surgeclaw's gaze had landed upon her, spitting an insult about her muddied blood. To see Salmonclaw slink up beside the powerful tom only left Minnowsplash's heart to sink further. Oh StarClan help me... She thought to herself, seeing both toms shift in preparation to attack. Yet, before either could strike, a furious she-cat bowled the older tom to the ground with a shrieking of the word traitor.
Without the other tom to back him up, Salmonclaw looked less certain of himself. He hung back, the pair circling one another warily, neither one especially wanting to initiate the confrontation. C-Come on, Minnowsplash! You... Have to do something! For Coldrush! For Stormstar. For RainClan. She found strength buried in those words, her ears flattening to her skull as her paws pushed hard off of the ground. Coldrush's lesson filtered into her mind, reminding her to move like the river's water. At the last second, just as Salmonclaw braced for impact and struck out in front of him, Minnowsplash ducked left, lunging for his shoulder.
The tom hissed in alarm, his teeth snapping shut toward her in an attempt to grab her tail. All he managed to snag was her lush fur, leaving the tom to sputter as Minnowsplash sprung away from him. He whirled on her, the initial attack evidently enough to egg him on. "How dare you, filthy half-Clan!" He hissed, slashing forward in a blow that caught her cheek. With a hiccuping squeak, she staggered back, shaking her head to clear it. With the strike, Salmonclaw's confidence grew exponentially, his chest puffing up proudly as he prepared another slash.
This time, she was ready. Pulling once more from her training with Stormstar and Coldrush, Minnowsplash roughly swatted his striking paw away, forcing it to the ground much to the tom's surprise. The unexpected did not end there, however, for she dove toward him rather than away, ducking slightly to pass under his chin only to kick her rump up into the air suddenly. Her hindquarters collided with Salmonclaw's chin, and Minnowsplash heard the shudder-worthy crack with which his teeth slammed into one another. A garbled screech of fury escaped him and Minnowsplash hurried away from him.
"Oo made meh bie mah tohngue!" Came a slurred hiss, the creamy she-cat whirling to face the pale-coated tom. His teeth were bared at her, blood dribbling from between them as he spat. Red flecks of the liquid were sent spattered across the plant-life beneath her paws, leaving her to flinch slightly. With the furious tom now charging her, Minnowsplash was forced on the defensive. Side stepping blows and returning the occasional smack, Minnowsplash could feel herself growing more and more tired. I... Don't know how long I can keep this up! She thought to herself, panting softly. She was tired, but Salmonclaw...
The tom was wheezing, as though fighting for every breath. When he sneered viciously at her, blood still oozed from his mouth, having turned his cream chin ruddy. Ducking beneath an overhanging plant, Minnowsplash was forced to dodge an increasingly sloppy strike from the enraged tom. He looked ready to launch another at her when he stopped. His face contorted in such evident discomfort that Minnowsplash visibly straightened. Wide eyes watched him as he began itching furiously at his shoulder, claws ripping into his own fur with a ferocity she'd not seen previously. Glancing over her shoulder awkwardly, the she-cat couldn't quite figure out what she was supposed to do until...
A keening wail, equal parts frustration and pain, left the tom's parted lips. His eyes narrowed at her as he continued tearing at his fur, now attacking his other shoulder. "'AlfC'an filff! Ooo goht 'ucky dis 'ime!" He snapped, word punctuated by his wheezing breaths, before promptly turning tail and dragging himself away from the battle field, only stopping to itch at his skin as though it were crawling with bugs. The confused warrioress paused a moment, her gaze flicking to and fro to pick out a Clanmate that might need what little bit of help she could offer. |
Feel free to have Minnowsplash jump in to help your cat if you want! Treat her as an NPC (within reason), and you can have her get a couple scratches along the way ^^ @sparrowkeeper @jem Amber @dreamer Fawn @zen Note: 18 moons old.

As purists mingled with loyalists, Owlflight felt a mingling of discomfort and happiness. She wasn't sure how to feel about all this, and while it was lovely to have so many reunions, she couldn't help but feel a distrust for her returned clan mates. As she heard her name called she swallowed hard. It seemed that she was always involved in these missions these days, and while she appreciated the honour of being considered a strong warrior, she knew that this was only going to end in blood as she rushed aftwer her new leader, drawing up as he did when they reached their destination. The tabby felt her fur rise as she stood slightly behind Stormstar, eyeing the surrounding bushes as he spoke to Swanfeather. They all knew better than to think that this was going to end nicely, with the very fact that Swanfeather still stood on RainClan ground being enough of a rebellion to cement a coming battle. She let herself glance once more at the white ex-medicine cat, a note of sadness chiming in her heart. Much like the rest of the purists, she had been a full member of the clan not too long ago. Owlflight could remember times she had had to go to the medicine den herself, and the care she had received, yet the calm and soft images from before clashed violently in her mind with her memories of bodies strewn over the ground. She felt herself harden as she once more began to look around suspiciously, an uncharacteristic anger bubbling up within her. Leopardyowl's cry was the trigger, and the whole world descended into chaos. Cats flew out of the foliage from all around them, and with a silent glare Owlflight found herself face-to-face with Petalfall, the senior warrior's pale fur bristling with aggression. The two circled each other, not leaping straight into battle like those around them but instead seeming to size one another up. Neither was a fan of battle, both being cats who preferred to speak rather than share blows, and Owlflight felt a flutter of sorrow at this observation, for they probably would have got on well if they had ever taken the time to speak to one another in happier times. "You can't win this Petalfall. You're outnumbered."Owlflight mewed levelly, screams and yowls echoing around the pair as she kept her eyes on her enemy's movements, "This is about ideals, about keeping the clan strong. Can't you see that Owlflight? Your family is pure, why do you side with these filthy half-clans and loners? You followed a leader who owed their loyalty to another clan for StarClan's sake!"
Petalfall hissed. The older warrior could feel the stress however. She knew that they were going to lose, could hear her mate Leopardyowl as he screeched and battled, and as the pressure increased on her she began to lose her clarity, "Ideals or not. You and the rest of the purists have blood on her claws."Owlflight snarled in response, feeling her own cool drop as the anger bubbled up again, louder and more persistent this time as the blood pulsed like a drum in her ears, "MURDERERS!"She yowled, tail lashing with a force of emotion she thought she lacked, with Petalfall mirroring her furious energy as the pair began to circle closer and faster, darting at each other to test for an opening, "They deserved to die! Disgusting half-breeds!"Petalfall spat, the frustration building in her as the screams around them continued, driving the pressure to a fever pitch as she finally snapped, "And if you side with them, then you're no better!" She yowled, leaping at Owlflight with claws out and slashing. Owlflight would normally have dodged to the side, but in a terrifying moment it seemed that her own anger had taken control of her, visions of the blood of her clan mates swimming in and out of her mind's eye, and the tabby met Petalfall head-on, rearing with her so that the pair danced on two legs for a few moments, front paws slashing at each other furiously. Owlflight saw claws cross her face, but didn't really feel it, violent fury coursing through her veins as she shoved back at Petalfall, pushing the she-cat over and backwards onto the ground with all her strength. Petalfall screeched in surprise and anger as Owlflight crushed her underneath her, teeth digging deep into the purist's shoulder as the pair kept clawing at each other madly. It wasn't the kind of well-placed and practised battling that warriors normally did, where one cat was simply getting another to run away, and was descending more into deliberate attempts to maim each other. Petalfall's claws ripped at Owlflight's belly, forcing the younger warrior to stagger away before leaping on Petalfall again as she tried to get up. The senior warrior bit deep into Owlflight's leg as she shoved her down again, causing Owlflight to scream out in pain as the tables turned and Petalfall rolled on top of her, snapping at her neck. Owlflight snarled furiously in response, kicking out with her hind-claws to force Petalfall off her again, the blow forcing the senior warrior to stagger backwards as Owlflight leaped to her paws and slashed again at her face, the blow toppling Petalfall to the ground with a sickening crack, where she lay dazed. Owlflight froze, panting, as she looked at the other she-cat. They were both covered in blood and gashes, and Petalfall looked like a dead mouse that kits had played with for too long I don't suppose I look any betterOwlflight thought as she took a step forward, smarting at the pain and starting to register just how battered she was. She felt her fury cooling as she looked at how pathetic Petalfall was as she attempted to get up, a cut above her right eye blinding half her vision as she she-cat swung around to look at Owlflight again challengingly. She's disorientated and panicked. I could kill her here and now and get away with it. Most cats would be happy if I did.She felt the anger again, urging her forwards, urging her to deal a fatal blow. I can't, I'll be just as bad as themShe thought to herself, but as she thought it she was still surging forwards, left paw raised to smash into Petalfall's blind side. The senior warrior anticipated it however, and with a swift duck she lashed back at Owlflight, toppling her over and leaping forward to clasp her jaws around her nec- "OOF"Owlflight's eyes widened in shock as Minnowsplash crashed into Petalfall, the pair rolling and slashing at each other as Owlflight managed to stagger to her paws, the horror of what had been about to happen crashing down on her like a bucket of cold water. IDIOT! I misjudged her! and I was go- I was about to-Minnowsplash and Petalfall's snarls forced her back into the present, and the grey tabby rushed forward to slash at Petalfall's back, forcing her to let go of Minnowsplash and back away slightly, still bristling as she eyed up her now two opponents. "GIVE UP PETALFALL!"Owlflight yowled, tail lashing and fur bristling as she and Minnowsplash stood side by side to face her. Petalfall glared at them both, tail lashing as she surveyed the scene. She was dazed and covered in injuries, and as she saw Leopardyowl limping away something broke inside her. With a howl of defiance and hatred the ex-RainClan cat ran away into the undergrowth, following her mate's scent as they fled.
