Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ The last few days had been... rotten. Rotten, but not impossible. When she was not worrying over Gullswoop, she was getting nasty, suspicious looks from her Clanmates now that she was back amongst Timberwing's supporters. In spite of this, she kept up a proud mien, maintaining her manners, and staying close to Willowbreeze and Jaycry. Their friendliness with one another hadn't escaped her, and Lotuswhisker hoped to the bottom of her heart to the top that it was going to form into what she suspected it would. Jaycry was a good warrior.
He was serious, but driven, and he was one of the few that spoke to her like she was still a part of this Clan.
So much seemed to change in the blink of an eye.
More cats dead. Stormheart becoming Stormstar. The sound of her mother's name in amongst the list of murderers... Lotuswhisker burned with shame every time she recounted that moment, feeling an icy stone slide into her belly, threatening to sink her in the camp stream. While Stormstar led his patrol to the Wooded Cove, Lotuswhisker tried to put her thoughts of her mother (oh StarClan, would she fight? Would she give herself up? Would she become a rogue and never see them again?) out of her mind while she ducked into Ottersplash's den.
There was a relief in visiting here, and knowing she wasn't about to have a conversation about being of benefit to the Clan. Setting down the fish she had brought for Ottersplash where the medicine cat could find it, Lotuswhisker went to Gullswoop's nest, feeling a wave of stomach-clenching guilt and remorse crash over her. She struggled not to drown.
Though the words were supposed to be 'how are you feeling?' They came out "I am so sorry. I had no idea my mother was killing our Clanmates. I am so sorry Leopardyowl took your father from you. I'm..." Her mother, her mentor... And then Salmonclaw attacking him. Lotuswhisker's eyes were dark, sea-green pools of anguish, suffering over his suffering. "I am bad luck to be around, Gullswoop. I never meant for those things to happen, especially not to you." Oh StarClan, please believe me. If I could've stopped them, ANY of them, I would've!
He had every right to be angry with her. To cast her aside like five-day old prey. There was something cruel about having blood as tainted as she did; it wasn't the NightClan side that turned out to be her undoing. It was the RainClan side. Lotuswhisker wanted to bathe in the river until every last trace of her mother's deeds and her mentor's atrocities had been washed clean, but that would never happen. She would only be soggy and guilty, still attached to two names that would never be spoken aloud in the Clan ever again.
Gullswoop could hate her. She hated herself just as much. Lotuswhisker's head hung low, looking at the wounds that were still healing on the silver tabby warrior.

hold, hold on, hold onto me 'CAUSE I'M A LITTLE UNSTEADY.
Gullswoop hadn't spent this much time in a medicine cat den since his mother's death, resulting in a very restless tom-cat. Bitternwing often visited him to ensure he wasn't lonely, it was nice to have his sister there when he needed her. She even protested leaving his side when he had a fever. The wounds were infected but luckily he wsa strong, all things considered, and was able to fight it off. When the fever broke he finally felt like himself.
It was Bitternwing that told him, in her soft voice and sweet words. All the wounds on his body were healing nicely, the deep claw marks and bite wound to his back and neck weren't showing any signs of scaring. However, the claw mark to his face would prove a different story. The location of the wound was preventing from it healing correctly, three large marks would forever scar his face.
Gullswoop never thought himself a cat to care about looks but with Ottersplash's help he was able to see into a small pool and take notice of his reflection. It wasn't terrible but it was jarring, almost like having two different faces. Upon realizing this, Gullswoop avoided pools of water and kept to the medicine cat's den. Ottersplash wanted him in the safety of the den until all his wounds were healed and no thread of infection hung over his head.
That quickly grew old.
Which lead to the situation that Lotuswhisker happened upon. Gullswoop laying in a nest with a pile of leaves in front of him. He had already sorted the good and the bad leaves and now stared at him like an unhappy kitten.
Hearing Lotuswhisker's voice caught him off guard as he rose up to turn and face her. Hearing everything she said, Gullswoop was unable to reply right away.
"You really don't have a reason to be sorry. It wasn't like you wanted her do it or you told Salmonclaw to attack me," Gullswoop told her. His tone very matter-of-fact.
"I wasn't exactly in the best state of mind. I could have easily fled, I was reckless because I was angry. In hindsight I was wrong, but I can't change it now," He told her, doing his best to remain level headed despite deep down feeling stupid for letting his guard down around Salmonclaw.
"I'm more concern that Stormstar will offer to change my name to Gullscar or something awful like that," Gullswoop told her, his terrible attempt at a joke. Even as he said it he felt stupid for even bringing them up. He was honestly more content with them being ignored but then again that would never be possible.

Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ You mean you don't hate me? Lotuswhisker stared, trying to accept that new information. More apologies were sticking to the back of her throat like an old fishbone, but... Gullswoop was right. She hadn't asked for Salmonclaw, Leopardyowl or Shadefrost to do what they had done; she was more than just her relatives. Ironic that that was the entire point the loyalists had been trying to prove -- her conversation with Jaycry came back to her just then -- andit wasn't until now that she fully understood what it meant.
Still feeling lower than river muck, Lotuswhisker moved closer so as not to block the den entrance, though a part of her was hoping no cats came in just now; she wanted to stay alone with Gullswoop. To talk to him without so much tension and misery between them.
"I'm more concern that Stormstar will offer to change my name to Gullscar or something awful like that."
Lotuswhisker's ear twitched, detecting a poor attempt at humor. She managed a thin smile, moving even closer to take a proper look at them. "They seem to be healing well. I don't think Stormstar would be that cruel. You have enough scars," she whispered, this time pressing her nose to his ear in soundless apology. "You don't need one on your name too."
Even with his reassurances, the brown warrioress felt responsible in some part for so much that had gone wrong. And especially to him. "Can I make this up to you?" She mewed, moving back to give him some space, her heart thumping hard against her chest. "I know you'll say it's not my fault - but please. I have to make things better. If there's anything I can do to help, let me know. I'll even see if I can find some nicer feathers for your nest." It was a small gesture, and Lotuswhisker suspected it would never feel like enough, but by StarClan it was a start.
With a pleading smile, she hoped he would say yes. Allow her to do this much.

hold, hold on, hold onto me 'CAUSE I'M A LITTLE UNSTEADY.
Gullswoop's unwavering green gaze locked with Lotuswhisker's for a moment. The way she stared at him was it in disbelief? He didn't know what to say or how else to explain to her he wasn't angry. Did she expect him to be? Gullswoop wondered if that was her upbringing the way others treated her that had her expecting him to be upset. That concern him but not enough to bring attention to it.
Watching and feeling her move closer had Gullswoop moving just a bit to allow her closer, there fur almost touching. Gullswoop towered over her even in the smaller den where he felt like his dead would scrap against the roof of it. He didn't find it al that bad to have Lotuswhisker that close to him even as he pretty eyes looked up to get a proper look at the scars forming on his face. When Bitternwing looked at him Gullswoop felt embarrassed but the way Lotuswhisker looked he didn't feel that way. Maybe it was the way she looked at him. To the silver and black tom it was almost as if she saw the scar second, which was nice.
Nodding in agreement to what she said about the scars healing nicely, he couldn't help but feel those were empty words. But all was forgotten as her nose pressed against his ear, the gesture was kind.
"I guess I'm lucky Vultureback gave me such thick fur, it will hide most of them," He told her the fluffy of his tail flicking against the ground of the medicine cat den.
His ears flicked again as Lotuswhisker asked if she could make it up to him. The tom-cat had to answer to give her. There was nothing to be done, but he knew what guilt felt like. Since his father's death he had been dealing with his fair share. As she moved back, Gullswoop felt the loss of her closeness and felt the urge to close the gap, but held back. She went on to explain that she wanted to do something. Resolved to give in her to wish to help her overcome her guilt, Gullswoop nodded.
"When I was a kit I would try and collect goose feathers to line my nest. They were the softest thing I could find. If you want you and I can go find some. I'm sure Ottersplash won't notice I'm gone," He told her a small smile forming on his face.

He was allowing her to make it up to him. Relief colored her expression a more pleasant shade than it had been, and she nodded, almost getting ahead of herself, willing to sneak him out of camp if need be (though how in StarClan's name anyone could miss Gullswoop was beyond her comprehension), until Stormstar's announcement from the river stone earlier gave her pause.
"We can't go out yet," she mewed gently, her legs folding into a neat sit, tail completing a gentle curl around her otter-brown paws. "Stormstar is leading a battle patrol to the wooded cove, to confront the last of the Purists. It's not wise to be out now, but..." Lotuswhisker's tail twitched, the she-cat's pretty gaze resting on Gullswoop, a smile forming. "...But the camp stream wouldn't hurt. I think it'd be nice to fish or... or just talk about better things."
Lotuswhisker didn't want to dwell on the fact that her mother, Shadefrost, had refused to rejoin the Clan. Or that her mother had actually murdered someone because of their heritage. It put ice in her veins, even just thinking about it now. Perhaps Gullswoop was sick of being in Ottersplash's den right now - well Lotuswhisker was sick of being in camp, with all the whispers and the stares. Just being able to sit by the water, take in the calmness of the stream and the beauty of leaf-fall (it seemed as though no cat had time to stop and appreciate nature anymore) before it all went away.
It was a little easier to ignore the horrors past and still going on, when Gullswoop was around. And she'd... she'd never thanked him, for being kind to her before. Even when she'd worn the label of Purist proudly. Even when she had thought of him as lesser. He wasn't lesser. He was probably more noble than some of the pure-blooded cats she knew.

hold, hold on, hold onto me 'CAUSE I'M A LITTLE UNSTEADY.
His expression changed, for a moment, when she mentioned that Stormstar was leading a battle patrol. He felt forgotten, left behind but it didn't urge to him to go and catch up. He knew he was in no condition to fight and if he came across Leopardyowl or Salmonclaw he doubted he'd be able to control himself.
Lotuswhisker's suggestion to go to the camp stream instead was met with a nod as the silver tabby rose to his paws. He didn't waste much time before departing from his nest and medicine cat den in a few strides. Glancing behind him to make sure Lotuswhisker was following, Gullswoop offered a smile of encouragement.
The camp stream was often the place for kits to play and splash around in. Fishing was decent but it wasn't where Gullswoop liked to fish, he preferred the serenity of the river. Finding the two of them a spot Gullswoop, quickly sat down and pointed with his tail for Lotuswhisker to sit next to him. His green eyes looking toward the water but avoiding actually looking at himself. The scars forming weren't anything he wanted to look at for long. Instead he kept himself back. "Do you remember swimming here? My mother never knew how to swim and my father didn't really like it but I love it. I much rather be swimming and coming home with my fur soaked than spending too much time out of it," Gullswoop told her, trying to find a way to start a conversation.

Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ "That explains what you were doing when you rescued me from that swan," Lotuswhisker mewed, a fond memory flashing across her vision even as she spoke. He had been kind to her, even with the division... even after... everything.
The pretty brown warrioress glanced at him, studying his face with something like a rueful smile. "My father is the one that taught Willowbreeze and I how to swim. I know he was... half NightClan," the word stuck in her throat like a fish bone "but he sure didn't act like it. He was a great swimmer. A great fisher and..." And a great father.
She hadn't seen him in twenty moons; she had looked for him at Gatherings, but from what she'd been able to glean from any inquieries into NightClan, her father Eaglechaser had not been permitted to join. If that was the case, then where had he gone? Would she ever see him again?
Lotuswhisker looked at the water, remembering her father's dark brown, tabby-striped figure as he taught them how to paddle and to steer with their tails, as he fished them out of the stream when their little legs got too tired from the lessons. There was such warmth and pride in Eaglechaser's eyes, then. Was he still proud of them? Or would he be ashamed that they had taken Shadefrost's side in this argument?
Frustration gnawed at her like a rat. I have to stop thinking about this. There is more to my life than the decisions of my parents! With a bit of forced cheerfulness, Lotuswhisker forged ahead with the conversation. "Now that things are going back to normal, maybe there will be kits in the nursery this leafbare. I know it might seem like a poor time to have a litter, but kits always make me so hopeful for newleaf." And then they could watch them learn to swim in the camp stream, as all kits did.
Her smile grew gentle, a low purr rising in her throat. She caught his reflection in the water (or rather, his ears; he was sitting far back enough that only his ears were visible when she looked at the stream), and risked a joke. "I don't think you should worry about any kits of yours learning to swim. If they're even half as tall as you, they'll be able to walk across."

hold, hold on, hold onto me 'CAUSE I'M A LITTLE UNSTEADY.
Gullswoop thoughts quickly went back to their meeting. The perhaps ironic altercation with the swan reminded him to be more mindful of where he found his feathers.
The next time he'd risk stealing from a swan he'd be doing it for his own kits or perhaps for his sister if she ever became a queen.
Letting the thoughts of kits slide past him like a leaf on a brook, Gullswoop offered Lotuswhisker a kind smile as she brought up her father. He didn't have the words to reply to her or offer any comfort. He too struggled with how he thought his own brother. Hawfall had left RainClan at a young age to join StoneClan, granted Lotuswhisker's father was much older the pain was likely much worse. Yet he still knew the pain his mother felt. He could remember the fear in her eyes when ever a patrol returned to camp complaining of StoneClan cats at the border. He often wondered why she never went to find him but realized that if she did her entire life would be different, StoneClan would never want a traitor back in their ranks . Blinking a few times he brought himself back to the moment, realizing he had fallen into his thoughts.
Sensing the Lotuswhisker was reliving some old memory by being back at the stream, Gullswoop attempted to make her feel better. He pressed his nose to her cheek and let out the softest of purrs. It wasn't romantic, at least not in the current context, but it was heartfelt. Gullswoop was a loving giant and felt almost guilty because of Lotuswhisker's situation. If his own parents had kept to their territory then done of this would have happened, but as soon as that horrible thought came to mind he forced it away. If his parents hadn't fallen in love he wouldn't be alive and selfish as it might be, Gullswoop enjoyed living.
Retreating away from her as she started to talk about kits, Gullswoop let a large purr escape him. "I'm sure Stormstar has a plan to reinforce the nursery and leafbares can be hard but by the time they are up and running around it will be newleaf. Which is a great time to learn about the world outside of the nursery," Gullswoop added, directing his attention back to the stream. He hadn't really thought of having his own kits but it was his recent brush with death that had him thinking a bit more.
Gullswoop didn't want a legacy but he wouldn't mind being a father. It was exciting and terrifying to think about. Only time and StarClan's blessing would give that to him. Comfortably lost in his thoughts again about possible kits, Gullswoop almost missed Lotuswhisker's joke, but as he was able to piece it together he let out a chuckle.
"We'd still have to make sure they knew how especially if they have my coat. We-" He paused realizing his mistake. He had implied that they would be parents, together, as mates. A blush formed and Gullswoop eyes flew wide as he quickly rose to his paws and took a step back. "I didn't mean it like that, I mean you are pretty and nicer now that your not a purist, but I didn't meant to imply that, I'm really sorry," He started to ramble a bit of panic setting in. words: 563• tagged: Fawn •

Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ Lotuswhisker laughed, finding his flustered reaction endearing. It was such a normal thing, the pretty brown feline hadn't realized how much she'd needed a bit of normalcy until Gullswoop had started tripping over his own words. "Better you than Salmonclaw," she replied, whiskers atwitch with mirth. "Did you know Swanfeather had the nerve to approach Willowbreeze and I about having more little purists?" Lotuswhisker glanced back at RainClan's camp, feeling proud that she had stood up to Swanfeather - or at least ignored her advice when it no longer proved sound. "Any kits I have will be RainClan, plain and simple." And because I WANT them, not because it's my duty.
That sort of obligation was not something she felt she owed the Clan; she was a warrior first and foremost. Though she longed for her own litter, life was too unstable, like a newborn deer on shaky legs, to possibly bring more new lives into it. She wouldn't be able to be a very good mother, not when her own head and heart were as tangled as branches in a crow's nest. But perhaps someday... When RainClan was a safe place to live, where her kits could thrive without the mistakes of both her parents looming over them, Lotuswhisker would love to become a queen.
It was something she thought should be experienced at least once in a she-cat's lifetime, but only under the right circumstances. And Lotuswhisker would never begrudge any she-cat who chose not to become a mother. For some, simply training an apprentice was enough of a contribution.
Still thinking of Gullswoop's funny, awkward fumbling, sea-green eyes found the silver tabby's face, and it was clear that she was hardly mad or upset by what had happened. "Don't back away, I promise not to claw your ears off." In a gentler voice, she swept her tail around to indicate the grassy spot beside her. "Sit next to me, please. I get enough cats avoiding me as it is."

hold, hold on, hold onto me 'CAUSE I'M A LITTLE UNSTEADY.
As Lotuswhisker laughed, tension started to melt away from Gullswoop. It didn't disappear right away but knowing she wasn't offended put him at ease. However the sense of ease was short lived. The mention of Salmonclaw had a visceral reaction clearly presented in Gullswoop's face and body language. The mention of the terrible excuse for a RainClan cat was enough to make Gullswoop's fur bristle. It didn't help that Lotuswhisker went on to explain what Swanfeather wanted for her to do.
A sort of overwhelming desire to protect Lotuswhisker washed over him but Gullswoop didn't act on his feelings. To know that Swanfeather would suggest such a thing made him uncomfortable. It was no one's place to judge anyone's choices about mates and kits. Furthermore it dug at his skin to know the reason Swanfeather wanted kits to be born purely to add numbers to their poorly planned rebellion.
Grateful that it was all going into the past, Gullswoop did his best to calm himself. Finding his opinion unimportant, he didn't bother to reply to what she said about having kits. The words that fallow did leave Gullswoop tonuge tied for another reason.
He hadn't realized how neglected Lotuswhisker had become. He could piece it together by her words alone. It must be truly terrible to be welcomed back home but feel that everything had changed, there was no more 'room' for you so to speak.
Once he felt his fur had settled and his heart wasn't racing at the thought of Salmonclaw, the silver tom cat returned to Lotuswhisker's side.
"I will never avoid you," Gullswoop meowed simply to her, in the same tone someone would talk about the weather. Despite the tone, his words still carried plenty of meaning. Gullswoop wouldn't ever push her away because of her actions. He believed with all his heart that she was truly sorry for what happened. Granted her beliefs were missed guided and her choices weren't the best. But it didn't change the fact that Gullswoop never walked her in her pawsteps. He didn't know every detail of her life in order to see why she made her choices. All knowledge that Gullswoop had of Lotuswhisker was being learned right now. He wasn't going to taint his learning by clinging outdated lessons.
"Wanna know something about me when I was little? I used to pretend I was a fish when I was learning to swim. See how long I could hold my breath. I also tried a few times to dive to the bottom of the river. I always wondered if there were half cat and half fish living down there. I know its silly but it was fun," Gullswoop rambled for a bit unsure of where to direct the conversation. He figured something to ease the tension that he felt lingering was a better choice then pure silence. words: 474 • tagged: Fawn •

Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ "I will never avoid you." Somehow, Gullswoop, the tom who had more reason than most to avoid her, was able to find it within himself to say something so kind. Lotuswhisker's world slowed down, and in an unusual moment of tenderness, she wanted to press her face into his long silvery fur. So grateful to have at least one loyalist who was able to see her as Clanmate, and not as 'one of them', Lotuswhisker found herself leaning closer, as if wanting to make sure his words really reached her ears.
"Thank you. I'm lucky to have a Clanmate like you, Gullswoop." Responding with genuine compassion, a rare smile, more subdued than her usual charming ones, was reserved just for him.
Before the mood could linger on those heavy subjects and heavy feelings, Gullswoop changed the subject to one Lotuswhisker could readily and happily embrace. White whiskers twitching, the amused twinkle in her eyes matched the reflected sunlight on the camp stream, and she dabbed a paw at a few lapping waves. "I bet you frightened a few of your Clanmates, doing that." Lotuswhisker purred, finding the sound pleasant to her own ears. It was a sign that she was starting to recover from this whole... ordeal. "Imagine, a silver-tabby catfish suddenly swims to the surface." Figuring she would share her own silly kithood stories, Lotuswhisker gazed at the reed clumps, memories wreathed in fondness as she thought of her father. "You see those reeds? My father used to say they were called cat-tails, because naughty warriors and apprentices would lose their tails for misbehaving. One time, Willowbreeze forgot to bury her fish bones - she was so scared she was going to lose her tail." A mrrow-ow-ow of laughter drifted out over the water like a summer breeze.
Gullswoop was good company. Some of the best she'd had in moons.

Gullswoop welcomed her as she leaned closer to him. For a brief moment he thought about tucking his tail around her the best he could, bring her 'under his wing'. However, he wasn't sure if it would be a welcomed gesture and decided not to. His ears flicked at her words. He wasn't sure how to react. Part of him wanted to thank her but another part wanted to point out that was how clanmates were supposed to act. Trying not to dwell too long on her words, Gullswoop instead offered a small smile.
"I'm pretty sure I scared my mentor Honeywisp a few times. He always thought I was drowing," He added with a faint chuckle. His first mentor had kits not long into their training, Honeywisp was the mentor that saw him into warriorhood. Gullswoop saw him as a solid ally in his life.
He glanced toward the reeds at her mention. Hearing Lotuswhisker's own memories was delightful. Hearing her laughter was enough to lighten the mood and he was grateful for it. "Poor Willowbreeze, I could only imagine how scary it would be not to have a tail. I've only seen a few cats without tail and can't understand how they do anything," Gullswoop replied, his thoughts wandering for a moment.
There was a slight shift in the wind that stirred up Gullswoop's thick fur. For a moment he thought of suggesting to Lotuswhisker to head back to camp, or further into the territory to hunt something. But a slightly greedy part of him wanted to keep this moment going, forget about things back at camp. Just the two of the for a moment longer.
"Would you like to hunt with me? Or just stay here?" He asked his voice a bit softer.

Lotuswhisker33 Moons, She-Cat, RainClan Warrior ------ Indecision made her whiskers twitch. On one paw, they could stay here, enjoy the privacy, enjoy each other's company for a little bit longer... On the other paw, they could hunt for the Clan. Lotuswhisker looked at the water; she knew which choice she should've made, but a part of her quelled at the thought of straying too far from RainClan's camp.
StarClan, what if Gullswoop was attacked again? What if the rogues—her mother—were still skulking around, just waiting for their opportunity for payback? Trying not to make her fears public knowledge, the pretty brown warrioress put on a smile. "Let's stay here, just for a little while longer." Relieved that he seemed unbothered by this decision, Lotuswhisker emitted a soft purr. I shouldn't let my concerns get the better of me. I think we're going to be fine, Gullswoop and Willowbreeze and I. They were going to get through this.
Once again feeling grateful for Gullswoop's continued companionship and their story-swapping, their conversation carried on for a good while longer. Both cats eventually returned to RainClan camp - with a sensation of having strengthened their bonds into something like friendship.
With the possibility for more.
