49 Moons. Senior Warrior. TreeClan. Single~ The camp was busy this morning. Oh my stars, I haven't seen everyone this active since the repairs for the forest fire. Thank StarClan that wasn't the case now, and it was simply preparations for the oncoming cold weather. Appleshade stretched, getting out of TreeClan's camp as soon as possible so as not to block the path of any busy apprentices hurrying two and fro with bedding materials.
Not hearing her name called, Appleshade's ears pricked forward, about to ask Gorsetail if he had anything for her or Lightpaw to do, when Skyfall's familiar mew sounded behind her. Spinning around, she smiled, her tail waving gently in greeting. He told her they were to take a hunting party of consisting of them and their two apprentices out into the wildflower meadow to see what they could find.
Purring, Appleshade whisked away to go find Lightpaw, glad to see him share her satisfaction over knowing they were hunting in familiar terrain. She had given him his first hunting lesson there. While Lightpaw and Duskpaw were chatting amicably behind their mentors, Appleshade fell in step next to Skyfall--for a moment, before she skipped ahead with a jaunty, light pace, cinnamon-shaded plume of a tail dancing happy S-shapes behind her. "It's so good to see Gorsetail adjusting so well to being deputy," Appleshade commented airily, sincerely thinking so. "I think this is going to help his confidence tremendously. How's Duskpaw's training coming along, by the way?"
Looking to her short-furred companion, she saw the breeze ruffle the loose fur on his shoulders, and wondered if he was at all chilly. Some of her 'cool weather' coat had already started coming in, so those chilly mornings in leaf-fall were a little less miserable for a cat who considered ho-hum weather a perfectly good reason to stay in one's nest all day.

SKYFALLWhen it crumbles, we will stand TALL and face it all together
Following Gorsetail's instructions, the white senior warrior had set off to find his apprentice. It turned out the ginger she-cat hadn't been far, drawn out by Gorsetail's voice carrying through camp. After beckoning her with his white tail, he offered her a pleasant smile as she approached. His mismatched eyes quickly landed on Appleshade next as she wandered out of the warrior's den, apparently unaware of their assigned patrol. It didn't take long for the tom to fill in the other senior warrior, nodding to her as she explained she was going to locate her apprentice.
A white muzzle tipped down to the ginger apprentice at his side, taking the opportunity to speak with the she-cat one on one. "Alright, Duskpaw. I have a tracking challenge for you today. While we are out, I'd like for you to locate and kill a rabbit, and a bird of your choice. Of course, if other prey cross your path, they are not to be ignored; I would rather you return with two mice than pass them up for a rabbit. Use your best judgment, as I have complete faith in you." He told her, touching his nose to her ear briefly.
When Appleshade reappeared, followed by Lightpaw, he waved the three TreeClanners toward the entrance. His pawsteps were certain as he took the lead out of habit. Momentary surprise flicked across his features as Appleshade quickly fell into step with him, though the surprise soon ebbed. It was nice to have someone walk beside him for once. He found her chatty nature to be charming, content to listen to her as she spoke. Appleshade certainly makes conversation seem easy. He remarked to himself with a flicker of a smile. As she brought up Gorsetail, the white senior warrior made a sound of agreement, watching as she sauntered off ahead of him.
"Indeed, he is accommodating well." Recalling a previous conversation the two had had, he chuckled, the tip of his white tail flicking to the side just so. "What did I tell you? He's strong of character, stronger than he gives himself credit for. I think he will help TreeClan just as much as TreeClan will help him." At the mention of his apprentice, the white furred tom nodded confidently. "I am very happy with Duskpaw's training. She is intelligent, and always ready to learn. She has managed to meet or exceed many of my expectations. I hope Lightpaw's training is also going well?" He meowed.
Appleshade seemed to weave about most of the journey, occasionally falling into step beside him, only dart off in some direction. She was amusing, and he meant it in the best way. He'd commented previously that she was good company, and she only managed to further prove that to him. Eventually, the Wildflower Clearing came into view. Signalling for the patrol to draw closer to him, he took a seat briefly before speaking. "Duskpaw, Lightpaw, I would like each of you to tell me one important trick to remember while hunting. You first, Duskpaw." 56 Moons. TreeClan. Senior Warrior.Heli, feel free to have Sky wave her off once she answers !// Fawn Hellion // 508 words

Duskpaw heard Grosetail's words and turned to seek out her mentor before heading over to him. She heard his instructions loud and clear, nodding in agreement. It was nice to have a little bit of time with her mentor and knowing that he had faith in her abilities put her at ease. Hunting was by far her strongest skill. However, tracking down the rabbit was going to be a bit of a challenge. Duskpaw hadn't yet mastered hunting them considering she spent most of her time hunting birds. Despite that she was eager to try if given the chance. The kind gesture of Skyfall's nose against her ear added to her feeling of closeness to her mentor. He had become a cat she looked up to and for a brief moment she wondered why he wasn't chosen for the role as deputy, but she figured it wasn't something she should bring up. Turning to see Lightpaw and Appleshade arrive, Duskpaw gave both of them welcoming nods. Despite sharing a den with Lightpaw, Duskpaw knew very little about him and figured it was going to be a good chance to get to know him. Duskpaw quickly fell into step walking behind Skyfall with her attention on the area around them. Her ears twitched as she heard the calls of various bird tto high in the trees for her claws. She looked up to see a small blue bird darting from one tree to another she wished birds to talk. Duskpaw wanted to know what it felt like to fly. Drawn out of her daydream by the sound of her name, Duskpaw attention turned toward her mentor. Overhearing what Skyfall told Appleshade, Duskpaw's cheeks flushed for a moment. It was one thing to have Skyfall praise her, something much for exciting to hear him praise her to another cat. As they walked on, Duskpaw tried to make polite conversation with Lightpaw but the tom-cat didn't look all the excited. "Maybe he is just shy," Duskpaw thought trying not over think it too much. Noticing the change in scenery, Duskpaw was careful not to crowd Lightpaw as she gathered close at Skyfall's beckon. "One trick is to know what your prey might be looking for. Birds like to find twigs for their nests, mice are looking for food." She answered, looking between the two full warrior for any sign of praise.

49 Moons. Senior Warrior. TreeClan. Single~ "One trick is to know what your prey might be looking for. Birds like to find twigs for their nests, mice are looking for food."
Appleshade's whiskers twitched in surprise, and she smiled at once, impressed by the she-cat's response. "Very good, Duskpaw. And you, Lightpaw?" There was a sense of inadequacy creeping up on her like a hawk's shadow, as she and Lightpaw locked eyes, both cats seeming uncertain what to say.
Lightpaw looked at his paws, then looked up again with that subtle spark of determination Appleshade had grown to love. "And squirrels and voles like to look for nuts."
Very good, though that just adds on to what Duskpaw said! Appleshade wanted that to be satisfactory, and she smiled big to show the young tom she was proud of him. "That's right! Can you think of any more?" She didn't mean to press him, but Lightpaw was a smart fellow, and she wanted to prove to Skyfall that she was even half as good a mentor as he...
The young tom looked a little uncomfortable to be put on the spot again so soon, but he managed to murmur. "Always step carefully when hunting mice?"
He looked relieved when he saw Appleshade's smile, and she returned that look, moving closer to touch her nose to her apprentice's ear. "Well done," she whispered so only he could hear, wanting to keep his confidence and his spirits up. "Let's see you put that into practice, hmm?"
With a brief glance at Skyfall to confirm that's where he was going with this, Appleshade waved her tail, dismissing them with a flourish. "I want you two to stay close together, alright? And remember, it's not a competition, but a good chance to practice your teamwork." Appleshade never understood the need for competition between apprentices.
Well, she supposed that working towards earning a warrior name was a serious thing when you were their age, but Appleshade hadn't wanted to earn hers by beating everyone else in the apprentices' den. Just seemed to breed a lot of negativity later on; they were all Clanmates, so why bother? When the two apprentices had disembarked, Appleshade turned back to Skyfall. "You don't suppose Duskpaw will try to... 'out hunt' Lightpaw, do you?" Appleshade mewed, trying to keep her voice casual but the concern showed through anyway.
She didn't know Duskpaw as well as she should, so it was better to ask than stand here worrying. "Lightpaw has a few problems with his self-confidence, I've just gotten him over his stammer. I don't want anything to... knock him down a few branches." Her whiskers twitched, the pale silver-sorrel warrioress tilting her head, watching their tails disappear into the bracken.

SKYFALLWhen it crumbles, we will stand TALL and face it all together
A pleased light danced through his mismatched eyes at Duskpaw's reply to his question. A white tail flicked his apprentice's shoulder, the senior warrior offering her a smile when her gaze flashed toward him. As Appleshade carefully drew an answer from her own apprentice, Skyfall rumbled in approval to the young tom's answer. He could see from the way Appleshade handled the tom that he was a little on the shy side. He was impressed, seeing her work so flawlessly with the timid tom. Next, Appleshade addressed both apprentices, reminding them this was less of a competition and more a teamwork exercise.
Nodding his head to accentuate that idea, he met Duskpaw's eyes to ensure she understood. Appleshade's dismissive tail flick was followed by the tom's encouraging smile before Skyfall motioned with his muzzle for the apprentice pair to begin. He remained seated beside Appleshade, watching as their apprentices set off to hunt. A white ear pivoted atop his head, drawn by the silver-sorrel she-cat's voice. Her concern was met with a thoughtful twitch of his whiskers, the white tom mulling over her words in his head. He ran through what he knew of Duskpaw, recalling some of her... More brash behaviors in battle training.
"I have seen a somewhat... Competitive nature in Duskpaw, perhaps a symptom of growing up with two larger brothers. It seems to appear most prominently during battle training, so I am hoping your reminder about teamwork will help dim that urge. I did, however, assign her a tracking challenge; one rabbit and one bird of her choice. Perhaps she will focus more on that than on the number she catches." Offering Appleshade a smile, he rose to his white paws. "If something does happen to his confidence, I have no doubt, Appleshade, you will succeed in rebuilding it." He told her honestly.
"Seeing you work with him is fascinating; you seem to know exactly how far to push without causing him to close in on himself. It is truly admirable." Figuring they had given the apprentices enough space, he glanced in the direction they'd disappeared. "Shall we follow them?" He offered, pausing to glance back at her over his shoulder. 56 Moons. Duskpaw beamed toward Appleshade when she was given praise. The words from a warrior saying she did well was enough to ease the tinge of awkward that often hung over her head. Despite it occurring so early into her apprenticeship, Duskpaw could help but worry that the older warriors knew of her easily failure. Did they talk about her breaking the code? In all truth it was very likely that only four cats knew of her code breaking and it was even more likely that each of the warriors in the clan broke one code or another. Hearing Lightpaw's reply had Duskpaw twitching her nose iresponsese. She wasn't impressed that Lightpaw pretty much copied her but she didn't dare mention it to anyone and kept the secret to herself. With some careful prompting, Lightpaw was able to add more to his answer. Duskpaw wanted to roll her eyes but instead focused on looking at the ground. She didn't want to upset Skyfall by being a brat to Lightpaw. Instead she tried to remain chipper as Appleshade suggested the two hunt together. Duskpaw hadn't really done much of it, she preferred to hunt on her own. Turning toward Lightpaw she flicked her tail before taking a slight lead. Lightpaw trailed after her but Duskpaw paid little attention to the cat behind her. Instead she focused on her own paw steps and the taste of the air around them. There wasn't much for her to scent right away, the smells of her her clan mates was still lingering. Flicking her tail as they ventured further on, Duskpaw paused to alert Lightpaw to a mouse busying itself with some kind of nut. She waited to see if Lightpaw would take the lead on the hunt but it seemed her fellow apprentice was better suited to sit back and watch her for a moment. In an effort to encourage Lightpaw and keeping in mind her own mentor's challenge. She looked toward the tom-cat with a half smile. "Keep your pawsteps light and go for the mouse," Duskpaw whisered to Lightpaw, who did as she suggested. Duskpaw watched him for a moment before moving on to her own hunting. She watched the area around her until the flutter of wings caught her attention. Above her was a thrush. Checking around to make sure Lightpaw wasn't too close and likley to spook her target. The little thrush bounced around trying to gather up some twigs. Duskpaw lowered herself down and prepared to bounce. Trying not to make any sound but sound of her paws hitting the ground, Duskpaw managed to capture the bird and give it a swift bite to the neck. Pride surged in her chest as she turned to see where her mentor and clanmates were lurking.

49 Moons. Senior Warrior. TreeClan. Single~ She was well past the age to need praise from her mentor to get through the day, but Skyfall's words rang true, like sunlight shining on her fur, she felt the warmth right down to her skin. He was an experienced mentor, and a well-respected warrior. Whether Appleshade was aware of it or not, his opinion held a lot of value to her. "Thank you, Skyfall," her mew was breathless but happy, a warm purr rising out of her throat at once. "And yes, let's~" It was important not to get too carried away with conversation, and actually do as Gorsetail had asked.
Once they were certain the apprentices were off to a good start, they could hunt for themselves. Always thinking of how best to include others, Appleshade's voice dropped to a whisper, and she stepped close enough that their pelts brushed in her efforts not to interrupt their pupils. "We should show them how to hunt in pairs, if they have any trouble."
Before she could get Skyfall's confirmation or quite possibly a better idea altogether, Appleshade's pale ears swiveled, catching Duskpaw's instructions as the ginger apprentice directed her lighter shaded counterpart. Go on, Lightpaw, you can do this! Just like I taught you. Tiptoing closer, she weaved, contorting around some bracken and blackberry bushes to get a closer look at the unfolding scene.
Duskpaw did seem intent upon completing the challenge Skyfall had given her. Though she was proud of the kitten for her accomplishments - and that excellent catch of the thrush - Appleshades tail-tip twitched, feeling as if her instructions to work together had gone... ignored. Focusing on Lightpaw next, she watched his form, her own heart thumping as loudly as a startled bird's; he lunged a little earlier than she would have, but it turned out to work for him.
A purr of pride burst from her throat as Lightpaw reappeared, carrying a mouse in his jaws. "Well done!" She whispered, knowing they couldn't hear her. Instead of making herself known, Appleshade threw a sidelong glance at Skyfall, wondering if he had noticed the same thing. Duskpaw's very direct. I hope she asks for Lightpaw's input from time to time, StarClan knows he's an intelligent little tom. He was exceptionally good at stealth; Appleshade felt her heart pang at the idea that his talents would be wasted or ignored in favor of a bossier Clanmate preferring to do all of the work herself.
Duskpaw was an excellent huntress, Appleshade wouldn't dare criticize Skyfall's apprentice. But... There was room for cooperation exercises. Teamwork. Bonding.

SKYFALLWhen it crumbles, we will stand TALL and face it all together
Mismatched eyes were focused on the apprentice pair as they wondered off. A single white ear twisted at the sound of approaching pawsteps, but it wasn't until he felt a gentle brush of soft fur against his that he pried his eyes away. With a glance toward Appleshade, he listened quietly to what she had to say, dipping his head in agreement. His apprentice's voice carried slightly on the wind, Skyfall just barely catching her instructions to her companion. White whiskers twitched thoughtfully as he observed the interaction. Duskpaw possessed potential for strong leadership qualities, though he noticed she could at times be a little direct.
The two younger cats broke apart, each heading to their own prey. A bi-colored gaze watched carefully as Duskpaw stalked a thrush. He assessed her form carefully, noting the lightness of her pawsteps as she approached, the she-cat using the thrush's bouncing movements to her advantage. Good work, Duskpaw. He thought proudly, watching as she sunk her teeth into the thrush's neck. Next, his eyes alighted on Lightpaw as Appleshade's apprentice closed in on his mouse. With a second successful catch completed, Skyfall twitched his tail and glanced toward the warrioress at his side.
"It seems as though your suggestion might just be needed." He commented quietly, jaws parted as he tasted the air. "There is a rabbit nearby, somewhere to the left. If I startle it out of hiding and chase it across the clearing, can you be ready to catch it before it hits the treeline on the opposite side?" He whispered softly. When the she-cat agreed, she smiled his thanks. "I'll gather the apprentices to ensure they are watching." With that, he slipped forward, his white tail waving to the two younger cats, indicating that they should draw nearer.
When they were finally close enough, he meowed quietly. "Great work, both of you. Your solo hunting skills have been well tuned to suit each of you. However, as Appleshade mentioned, team hunting is just as important a skill to fine tune as solo hunting. I want you both to watch the clearing, but stay out of sight of prey." Pausing only to ensure each apprentice understood, the white warrior slipped back into the undergrowth, keeping to the thicker portions to conceal his white pelt. This was part of the reason he chose to chase the rabbit: Appleshade's pelt was much easier to conceal in the foliage, especially in Leaf-fall.
Jaws remained parted as he tracked the rabbit, circling wide to best position himself without alerting it to his presence. The fuzzy creature hovered near the edge of the clearing, snuffling through the grasses in search of something. Steadying his breath, Skyfall rocked back just so, preparing himself before lunging forward in an unmistakable flash of white fur. The rabbit looked as though it might leap out of its fur, paws skittering desperately to grip the ground below. Just as Skyfall had hoped, the creature shot forward and began its desperate hurtle across the Wildflower Clearing.
He was a white streak behind it, ducking and veering every now and again to keep it from shooting off to one side. Trusting Appleshade to correct for any slight deviations in the rabbit's path, Skyfall focused on keeping a pace acceptable for chasing without any intent of actually catching. The trees were fast approaching, and time running out. Four... Three... Two... The tom counted down in his head, mismatched eyes flicking up just in time to see the slightest movement in the undergrowth before them. His muscles immediately shifted gear, the tom darting to one side to avoid colliding with the creamy she-cat that shot forth to seized the rabbit.
In an instant, it was immobile, and the white tom had managed to slow to a stop a few tail lengths away. His sides heaved slightly, but he padded toward her with a smile and a dip of his head. "Well timed, Appleshade. And an extraordinary kill." He commented, waiting for her to join him before they made their way back toward the apprentices. "Learn to use both your partner's strengths and weaknesses to your advantages. By asking Appleshade to take position in the treeline opposite me, I gave her opportunity to conceal herself from view. My white pelt is no good for stealth, unless there is snow on the ground. Instead, I used it as a distraction, to keep the rabbit's attention on me instead of her. Now it's your turn. And remember, teamwork is equal parts give and take." 56 Moons. TreeClan. Senior Warrior.

Duskpaw had a feeling when Skyfall spoke that it would be about their lack of working together. It wasn't that she disliked Lightpaw, but found it difficult to work along side a cat that didn't speak up for himself. Duskpaw was used to Dunepaw, he spoke up and called her out when she was getting ahead of herself. Lightpaw seemed to just agree with her from the start, making it easier for Duskpaw to step over him to make her own path. She remained silent as she nodded in agreement to Skyfall's instructions. Tucking the bird away for safe keeping, Duskpaw headed toward the clearing, her jaw opened for any scent of prey. There was a rabbit lurking and there was a drive within Duskpaw to skirt ahead and claim the prey for herself, but she restrained herself. Instead her focus returned on the spot where Skyfall disappeared. She waited for him to reappear, her own vantage point giving her a decent view of the area around her. It was clear that Skyfall was going to chase the rabbit toward Appleshade who would likely be hidden elsewhere. Glancing toward Lightpaw she wondered which of them would be better suited for both halves of the work. Duskpaw was quite fast at pouncing and her legs were strong enough to run after a rabbit, but perhaps she was better suited to wait in the brush like Appleshade. Duskpaw didn't know how accurate of a hunter Lightpaw was and she didn't want to lose it because he missed. Focusing her attention back on the hunt in front of her, Duskpaw hadn't realized she was holding her breath until Appleshade short forth to catch the rabbit. Wow! She thought before coming closer slowly to meet her mentor half-way. Hearing her mentor's words had Duskpaw nodded again before turning her attention to Lightpaw. "I think you chase would be better because like Skyfall you have a lighter pelt," She told him which he agreed with a short nod. Glancing for a second toward her mentor Duskpaw attempted to gauge if he was pleased with her being so direct. Lightpaw however, gained her attention first by saying there was a near by rabbit on the other side of the clearing. Duskpaw nodded in understand before standing, Lightpaw joined her side as the two apprentices walked the perimeter of the clearing.
Sure enough nestled near a bundle of brush was a smaller, younger rabbit. Duskpaw looked to Lightpaw and wanted to ask if he thought it was baby rabbit but decided against opening her mouth. Even if they whispered it would risk spooking the animal. Tilting her head up Duskpaw did her best to guess which way the wind was going and using her tail she pointed to the direction Lightpaw should travel in order to avoid being scented. The tom cat nodded and took the long way back around.
He gave no signal before disappearing into the shadow, which made Duskpaw uneasy. She disliked not being ready but she trusted in her hunting partner. Focusing on the task at paw, Duskpaw was careful to lower herself in the underbrush and wait for Lightpaw.
It felt like moons past but really it was only heart beats until Lightpaw darted forward. He gave a sort of soft growl which spooked the rabbit to dart ahead. The two apprentices weren't the best at hunting in pairs and it was made clear considering Duskpaw had to race through the underbrush to reach the rabbit before it slipped away.
Darting forward Lightpaw nearly collide into Duskpaw as he lunged forward and took down the rabbit. The overall event was messy but it got the job done. Looking toward Lightpaw she offered him a small smile, as he panted to catch his breath.
"We weren't too bad," She told him in a poor attempt at offering praise. She knew from the moment she went crash through the underbrush any further hunting in the area was ruined. Poor planning on their part.

49 Moons. Senior Warrior. TreeClan. Single~ Appleshade wasn't fond of chasing down prey; being a TreeClan cat through and through, she much preferred perfecting her stalking skills to running pell-mell through their territory like some sort of LightningClan cat. Partner hunting was always preferred, in her case, and with Skyfall's level head for strategy and her own ability to judge distances well, they were well-suited to hunting even in a leaf-fall environment.
With a soft waving tail of acknowledgment, she had disappeared into the wildflower clearing, the she-cat unusually serious as her attention was taken up by the large white tom pursuing the rabbit straight towards her. They had to account for the rabbit not being willing to get caught, thus, Appleshade adjusted her position not once, but three times until the right opportuntiy presented itself.
Lunging as swiftly as a snake, she caught the rabbit around the throat, her body ducking low in case Skyfall's chosen method of avoiding her involved jumping, but her Clanmate simply flew past without incident. Sinking her teeth into the rabbit's neck, she whispered a thankful prayer to it and to StarClan for it's life. Feeling the usual swell of melancholy over killing something so that others could survive, she shook off those sentimental thoughts (as best one could, anyway), before regrouping with Skyfall and the apprentices.
He handled the explanation very well, and she had nothing to add but a smile. "Good luck, you two. And if you do poorly, don't feel too bad. Skyfall and I have been Clanmates for 40 moons or more," a look of warmth was tossed his way, "so we know how to work with one another. It takes time."
With a soft encouraging touch to Lightpaw's shoulder with the end of her tail, Appleshade saw the two 'paws off, weaving a bit around Skyfall as if she wanted to say something further. "How do you stop from mothering your apprentice? If I could hover over his shoulder and whisper encouragement, I would in a heartbeat!" She whispered, smiling and fretting all at once. "It's not that I don't have faith in them, I just - oh I just hate waiting, not knowing how it's going to go!" Kneading the ground with impatience, Appleshade got the last of her jitters out of her system with a quick shake of the pelt. I believe in you, Lightpaw. You can do this!
Leading the way after them, Appleshade navigated the shadows of the trees with careful steps, her pale pelt blending into the wildflower clearing more easily than Skyfall's did, but that mattered little at the moment. They were here to observe. Lightpaw swiftly came into view - it looked as if the youngsters had spotted a rabbit, and were doing their best to mimic their mentors - and Appleshade winced both at the noise and at the near collision of Lightpaw and Duskpaw. Her apprentice was able to catch the rabbit, with Duskpaw's help, but no small part of her wondered if they might not have been so lucky if the rabbit had been older, more experienced.
Still, a catch was a catch, and it was a lot better than her first experience with partner hunting.
"Well done, Lightpaw & Duskpaw!" She mewed, taking care to step gently through the wildflowers to greet them. "There were a few things that need additional work, but overall, you both managed to work together, which was the whole point. I believe we're finished hunting for the day - we've caught plenty." Appleshade's eyes found Skyfall's bicolored gaze, awaiting confirmation or a counter-suggestion, the warrioress preferring to place the authority squarely on Skyfall's broad shoulders. He was the more experienced mentor, after all.
