46 Moons || Senior Warrior || Tom there's a light that you give me when I'm in shadow It felt like only yesterday Gorsetail had been just another young warrior of TreeClan; yet it was so easy to think he had been TreeClan's deputy all this time, as the cats around him seemed to fall into place without fuss. There were a few older warriors who likely protested Gorsetail's ascension to deputy, but they had the good sense to keep quiet about it.
Leading a patrol consisting of Blackwing, Cloudpool, Badgerpaw and Birchpaw, Sprucefur rounded up the cats Gorsetail had mentioned, and with a soft smile for his apprentice, they set out for the NightClan border. Sprucefur realized absently that he had not patrolled with Blackwing and Cloudpool much--separately, a pawful of times, but together? Not often.
Whereas before he would not have had much of an interest in the romantic lives of his Clanmates (not out of cynicism or dislike, but rather because the tom valued privacy), he and Feathercloud were getting closer and closer. Without a mother figure or a father figure in his life, with no examples of long term, prospering relationships to learn from, Sprucefur realized he had no idea how to be someone's mate.
The idea hadn't daunted him so much before now, but with the possibility sneaking up on him like leafbare, Sprucefur realized he was a squirrel without a tree. He didn't know where to begin. Blackwing asked to take the lead, and Sprucefur let him, acknowledging the tom's seniority with a curt, polite nod, his pace slowing so that he could walk beside Cloudpool while the apprentices chatted behind them.
He glanced sideways at her, uncertain how to broach the subject, or if he even could. Appleshade seemed to think highly of her, which was a sign that she must be friendly or at least open to obvious, flirtatious personalities such as Appleshade's without feeling too rankled. But a conversation about relationships? Was it okay for him to ask how she and Blackwing had managed to stay together after so many moons?
The pale golden warrior frowned, his expression looking more serious than usual as he tried to navigate the uncertain thickets of social interaction. Thinking he'd been a little more inconspicuous, Sprucefur's mouth ran dry with embarrassment as Cloudpool called him out on his glances. "Sorry," he murmured. 'Don't mumble, Sprucefur. If you don't make yourself easy to understand, no one's going to talk to you.' Nightmaple's voice seemed to fill his head at that moment, and he flicked an ear to dispell his former mentor's criticisms. "I just wanted to ask you about you and Blackwing." His gaze darted to the back of the dark-furred tom's head, then returned to Cloudpool.
"How do you keep a relationship going for so many moons?" Sprucefur followed up quickly with "If I'm prying too much, tell me. I'll stop at once." The last thing he wanted was to tread on the older queen's toes.

Cloudpool TreeClan - Queen - 76 Moons It truly was a joy to get to patrol wit her mate, even if he was less ready to be as affectionate in public as she might be. Even so she walked by his side, occasionally twining her tail with his as she disgussed how her training with Birchpaw was going. Since it was truly her first apprentice, she was greatly enjoying it. Would Blackwing come one day and make sure that her battle training was going alright? His noncommittal answer was expected, but she didnt mind. Usually she could bring him around to things, especially if she made it clear that they were important to her.
Blackwing seemed eager to get up to the front, so Cloudpool let him go after a small nuzzle to his cheek.
She found herself walking just ahead of the apprentices, with Sprucefur at her side. The young golden warrior was a capable sort, if a bit more uptight than some cats. But he kept giving her these odd conflicted glances. They reminded her so much of ones which Blackwing made when he was avoiding something, that Cloudpool laughed.
"Sprucefur, you look like you have a mousebone stuck in your throat. Am I that uncomfortable to be around?" He apologized, and she smiled gently at him. What she didn't expect was his question, and her eyes widened. "Oh, no you are perfectly fine to ask. Although," she said with a cheeky grin, "One does wonder why you might ask. Do you have any she-cats you have your eyes on?" With a chuckle, she flicked him with her tail. "No, don't answer that, that's your business not mine." Her eyes twinkled brightly as she looked at him, and then shifted her gaze to the forest around them as she considered.
"You know something I have learned, it is always important to talk through things." Her whiskers twitched slightly with amusement. "It might not be obvious because Blackwing has always been less than talkative, but because I am so social, I have had to learn that the only way I can deal with my frustrations with him, is to talk them through with him." She chuckled. "It's funny, because most any pair will tell you communication is key, although some seem to need it less, or communicate differently, such as our lovely new queen Silentsong. However, its important to remember that while communication is important, respect is even more so. If you argue and leave angry, how do you expect your relationship to last? Leave your emotions to the side the best you can and try and talk through things without letting your anger affect your tone or make you say something you'll regret." She trailed off and looked at him, a mischievous grin growing on her face. "Are you looking for another facet of that answer too? Such as romance? Well all I can say to that is always remember to make sure you keep an open channel, what does she like? What does she want to change... what feels good?" At that Cloudpool couldn't help but grin widely.
Hopefully the apprentices weren't listening in.

46 Moons || Senior Warrior || Tom there's a light that you give me when I'm in shadow Sprucefur was both surprised and relieved by the amount of information Cloudpool had to share with him. He smiled a little, as she mentioned talking things out with Blackwing; he couldn't imagine their conversations, but it was... reassuring to know that at least some cat seemed to know how this whole thing worked. He was glad he'd asked her.
Glad up until she'd mentioned that last part, and the tom flushed so red beneath his pelt, it was a wonder he hadn't turned properly ginger. The pale golden tom stuttered. "We-We-We aren't are that stage yet, we're, uh, taking things as they happen." Why did that sound weird? He just meant that they were taking their relationship slowly... Hoping the older she-cat wouldn't read into something that wasn't there, Sprucefur cleared his throat, awkwardly glancing around at the trees as if someone might reach out a paw to save him from his own bashfulness.
Great StarClan, she caught me off guard. He wasn't certain he wanted to examine that bit of advice too closely (not yet anyway), so he focused on her earlier words. About listening. About mutual respect and patience for one another. Sprucefur had always considered himself a reasonable cat; slow to anger, a little on the serious side, but someone had to be when it came to his siblings...
"Thank you for the advice, Cloudpool. I never saw my parents together, Badgerstripe died shortly before I was born, and Camelliablossom became a loner..." Sprucefur shook his head. He didn't need to clarify, he was sure Cloudpool could figure out that he didn't have much in the way of healthy relationships to go off of. Considering Camelliablossom had seduced Lionstar's father (who had a mate, Sandfur, at the time) and then shown up in TreeClan to have his kits and leave, his parents' love story was more of a scandal than anything.
"I have another question." Sprucefur's ears flicked back, feeling a little self-conscious. "When's the right time to ask someone to be your mate? Is it something both cats decide on without even having to mention it?" Was there a certain order to things? There was always a chance he was asking ridiculous questions, but Sprucefur risked it. Making sure he got things right with Feathercloud was worth getting laughed at.

Cloudpool TreeClan - Queen - 76 Moons
The day had instantly become infinetly better as she was able to discuss her relationship with Blackwing with Sprucefur. It was also fun to tease him a bit, goodness how he stuttered and stammered when she suggested even such an integral part of a mated relationship. After all that's what they were called wasn't it? But his reaction was indeed priceless, she wondered if he would trip over his paws as this rate.
When he mentioned how he had never had any role models, she nodded in understanding.
"Not everyone is lucky enough to have the experience of good family examples. Just be sure you are ready to provide them when the time comes. It's important to stop the vicious cycle of bad parenting to the best of your ability... I will say though, that it is never easy, you have to understand that. Sometimes I wonder if my own kits even realize that."
She imagined poor Skyfall as he dealt with relationship issues. Hopefully he would overcome them with time and she would finally be able to have grandkits! It would be about time after all, but she wasn't one to push it. Starclan knew how badly that would end. She could wait, but she did hope one day that her capable warrior would also become a caring mate to some lucky she-cat. Whiteclaw... well he had somewhat missed a chance there, but in a way she understood him. She didn't really expect anything from him, he would be a happy bachelor for the rest of his days, and that would be his choice. As for Swandive... well that she-cat was all over the place, and Cloudpool fondly imagined her being the crazy aunt. Whether or not she attracted a mate it would be hard to say. Keeping one with her mischievous nature and strong bond with her brother might be the hard part. Shaking her head to clear it as she realized she left Sprucefur in silence, she answered his other question.
"That, young warrior, is up to you. In many ways it depends on your potential mate. Are they a romantic at heart? Do they like to be courted or romanced? Would they like a simple heartfelt confession? A huge hubub announcement in front of the clan, or are they the type who would want to keep it simple, secret, personal? In the end, you will have to talk about it, but the way you do is what makes every pair unique."
She smiled gently at the tom.
"Whatever you do decide, if you or your mate have any questions, please feel free to come talk to me or Blackwing." She glanced at her mate and smirked a little."Though I'm not sure what you'll get out of him, but it would certainly be entertaining." She focused again on Sprucefur."Just remember, your clan is here for you, and when it gets hard, we are here to support you and get you through it."

What would Feathercloud like? She had a loud personality, you could always find her in any part of the forest if you knew what to look and listen for. But that didn't mean she wanted a proposal as loud and attention-catching as herself? She likes me, after all. I'm not the most noticeable cat in the forest that's for sure. Should he trust his instinct and go with something small but meaningful?
Sprucefur's stomach looped itself into knots, nervousness clawing at him like brambles. Something small. Just the two of us. He considered asking Appleshade for help - his flirty, romance-obsessed sister seemed good for this sort of thing - but he couldn't trust her not to blab again by accident. The golden warrior's whiskers twitched into something of a smile, as he remembered her utter mortification when she'd had to tell him what she'd done...
Funny how that was probably the best thing that had ever happened to him.
Tuning back to Cloudpool, he blinked in gratitude as she informed him kindly that he and Feathercloud could ask her or Blackwing for advice at any time. Though the older she-cat seemed to indicate that Blackwing would have little to say on the matter, Sprucefur was, in earnest, curious to hear it from the tom's perspective. He felt strongly that Blackwing would either confirm everything Cloudpool had said, or even bolster it by providing different but complimentary advice to go with his mate's.
"Thanks again, Cloudpool. I hope at least by the end of leaf-fall, I'll be able to..." He paused. Was there really any point in hiding her identity? He was a private individual, yes, but they were a Clan. And he knew now that Cloudpool would support him. "...I'll be able to introduce Feathercloud as my mate. If you see her, you won't say anything about this conversation?" He didn't mean to become overly serious all over again, but he couldn't help himself. This felt like the most important thing in his life right now, and this time, he wanted it to go perfectly.

Cloudpool TreeClan - Queen - 76 Moons
Cloudpool watched Sprucefur as he seemed to consider what she had said about different cats wanting different things. The older she-cat truly appreciated the attentiveness with which he was asking questions. After all, most toms would just go straight on and do whatever they liked without thinking about the she-cats preferences. It was one reason so many relationships had rough starts or didnt turn out well. Either cat didnt consider the consequences and differences of being in a relationship and thus would sometimes feel smothered or ignored or anywhere in between.
Even she and Blackwing had been similar in their youth, particularly not long after they became warriors, as she had always given so much more to their relationship. It wasn't until she had a rather eebarassing breakdown and fight with him that their relationship improved and he began to be much more involved. He was still never as involved as other toms might be, but together they adjusted to each others needs, and then they were expecting kits and with that everything changed again.
But Sprucefur was taking his time to consider it. Hopefully that meant that everything would turn out well.
That was when he mentioned Feathercloud, and Cloudpool grinned at him. "Don't worry, I'll keep your secret. But that wont stop me from smiling at her. When you do speak to her, let me know, I would be glad to congratulate the two of you." She sad with a wink.
