LEOPARDYOWL Leopardyowl cursed Ottersplash and Bluewave as they left RainClan's camp, wishing it were leafbare so as to slow down their progress. His tail-tip twitched like an angry snake, watching through narrowed, poisonous eyes as his guards were changed over to Honeygaze and Whiteash. He could overpower one of them easily--but not both. Not without alerting half the camp to his escape. He needed to tell Swanfeather that NightClan fox was finally dead! Bluewave could not be allowed to become Bluestar; no cat picked by Timberwing could ever hold a rank in RainClan, not while he was still alive and well. Leopardyowl's claws hungered for blood, and his lip curled, angry that he had not gotten the chance to kill Timberwing himself. Forced to wait, the spotted warrior hunkered down, listening intently to the comings and goings of the camp. At last, his moment came. "I'll be right back, I have to use the dirtplace." Whiteash murmured in Honeygaze's ear. Leopardyowl felt rather than saw both she-cats glance back at him. Go on, you fishbrain. Go on. Bluewave's border patrol had not yet returned, and most of the Clan seemed to be fishing--in large groups, which was a wise choice on their part. Honeygaze nodded. "Be quick."Leopardyowl feigned sleep for a few heartbeats, and then, as silent as a shadow over the moon, rose to his paws, listening for Whiteash's retreating footsteps. With a savage lunge, he thrust his head out of the elders' den entrance and sank his teeth into the side of Honeygaze's throat, dragging the struggling cat into the reeds. Her gurgled cry of horror was abruptly cut short, but Leopardyowl wasted no time. He leaped over her body and lunged for the entrance to camp, streaking past shocked, yowling warriors. A ruddy tom sprang to his paws. "Stop him!"The snarls of rage from his Clanmates gave Leopardyowl all the incentive he needed to run as if the Dark Forest was chasing him; Russethawk, Owlflight, Ashpaw and Crowblaze were hot on his heels. Leopardyowl splashed noisily through the river, certain his Clanmates would come help him as soon as he was within a foxlength of the wooded cove. Leopardyowl need not have run so fast, however; the tom nearly collided with a scene of carnage, just as the blood and fear-scents slammed him in the nose. Shocked, he saw the bodies of Rippletail, Sunstride, Cobragaze and Mottledpelt looking ragged and still warm, even as the life ebbed out of them onto the grass. Leopardyowl leaped clear of the fallen traitors, sparing a second to nod respectfully at his fallen Clanmate, Cobragaze, before he hurried on to the Wooded Cove, knowing the idiots chasing him would be too shocked by this latest development to continue pursuit. Once there, he went straight to Swanfeather to tell her the news. Ottersplash and Bluewave must be stopped.

Four Cats Killed. It’s not difficult to guess what happened. The border patrol of Rippletail, Sunstride and Mottledpelt were ambushed--by Cobragaze and possibly one or two more Purists. Sunstride’s body is closest to Rippletail, and his teeth are still in her scruff, as if he tried to drag his mate to safety. Cobragaze has tufts of Sunstride’s ginger pelt and Mottledpelt’s splotchy fur in his claws. Rippletail bears no wounds but the vicious bite mark on the back of her neck, indicating she had been too surprised to put up much of a fight. Sunstride and Mottledpelt are missing several patches of fur, and their wounds are numerous and wicked. Sunstride seems to have died from a horrible wound on his belly, his ear shredded, and a gash in Mottledpelt’s neck indicates her death was just as awful. Who did this? When will the bloodshed finally end?The Clues The single killing bite on the back of Rippletail's neck. Tufts of tabby fur in Sunstride's claws and on the grass where they were ambushed. The nature of the wounds: vicious and without mercy. The killer seems to have enjoyed themselves, despite losing Cobragaze. The scent of Surgeclaw is heavy on every cat's pelt. What Now? Leopardyowl has escaped. The border patrol was attacked, with no survivors except one of the attackers. Bluewave and Ottersplash have gone to the Moon Tree, but there's no guarantee they will reach it.
Ashpaw, Russethawk, Crowblaze and Owlflight should bring their Clanmates back to RainClan and report their deaths.
The two sides are now at war. Any Purists encountered along the way back will be attacked and killed if necessary.

The grey tabby had been relaxing as best she could in the centre of camp, chewing absent-mindedly on a small fish, its corpse held tightly between her two front paws as she dug her claws in to keep it steady. So much had been happening lately that she had had a hard time maintaining some level of clarity, with bloodshed after bloodshed cluttering her mind like a revolting mist. She stared at the sky, trying to find some semblance of peace, but of course such an attempt was fruitless.
Honeygaze's strangled cry sent a spine-chilling shiver down Owlflight's back as she leaped to her paws, half-eaten fish forgotten as the she-cat saw Leopardyowl streak out of the elder's den and into the territories. Fangs bared as she felt the situation spiralling increasingly and horrifyingly out of control, Owlflight burst after him, grey paws thudding at the ground furiously as she kept his spotted pelt in her sights.
You are NOT getting away that easily! You and all the other ghastly monsters you have become must be put to justice!
She thought to herself as she sprinted, not wasting breath on shouting. She wasn't the fastest of the clan however, and Leopardyowl began to outpace her, she kept going as fast as she could however, knowing that her clanmates would get to him first and would be in need of her strength.
They were going to catch him, she was sure of it, sure that is until she stumbled across a massacre.
The usually silent she-cat gave out a strangled cry of her own, stumbling to a halt despite herself as she looked around at the bloodcurdling scene. She had never seen anything so dreadful. An otherworldly feeling encompassed her as she gazed at her fallen clanmates.
So many of us...
The anger that descended upon Owlflight's heart was unnerving, and she gripped the ground with her claws in order to stop herself from swaying. She opened her mouth as if to speak, but no words came out, and she just shook her head grieviously before managing to gain control of her emotions again, gritting her teeth and glancing up to see that Leopardyowl was long gone, as was the justice she was so hoping to find.

I have changed, I have changed, just like you, just like you...
Leopardyowl hared toward the camp entrance as some cat shouted to stop him and Ashpaw was on her paws and tearing after the escaping tom almost before the words were spoken. No way... you're NOT getting away, murderer! She was dimly aware of a number of her Clanmates pounding along with her, but whether they were there or not didn't matter right now. All that mattered was stopping Leopardyowl from hurting any other-
She skidded to a halt, her fur fluffing up in horror, eyes wide, at the bloody massacre that lay before her. She tore her gaze away from the carnage, white hot rage searing through her veins. She recognized the scent that covered the area, even beneath the scent of blood that threatened to choke her. And his body did not lay with the other dead. Her own kin had played a part in this. Surgeclaw.
Not waiting to see what the rest of her Clanmates would do, she leaped over the bodies, dug her claws into the earth, and raced after Leopardyowl's fresh scent, snarling, “You better hope you find your friends before I find you, you foxhearted piece of crowfood!”
Leopardyowl, Surgeclaw, it didn't matter who heard her words, for they were meant for every single one of the Purists that had committed such heinous crimes against RainClan. Murderers were beyond the Code, kicking dirt all over it, they deserved no mercy as far as she was concerned. They were beyond reason and beyond forgiveness. To Ashpaw, they were dead already. It was kill or be killed, and Ashpaw was nothing if not a survivor.
I'm still alive, I'm still alive, I cannot apologize, no....

42 Moons | RainClan | Tom | Senior Warrior The ruddy warrior that had sounded the alarm, Russethawk pelted after Ashpaw, Crowblaze and Owlflight, his legs churning powerfully as he took after the longer-legged warrior. RainClan cats were not accustomed to so much running, and it became clear as they slowly began to lag behind the spotted tom. But then the scent of blood hit Russethawk, and he gasped in horror as the pursuit group nearly collided with the bodies on the ground.
"No!"
Russsethawk's thoughts all crashed into each other like waves on a lake, overlapping into a miasma of distress and angry sorrow.
Leopardyowl escaped— find Stormheart— warn Bluewave— bury them, they have to be buried—
but he could not be in five places at once.
Russethawk wanted to stop dead in his tracks, but Ashpaw had gone on a harelength ahead of him, the sight of her dead Clanmates sending her in a whirling rage after her kin.
Russethawk bounded over the bodies, and with a desperate spurt, caught Ashpaw's tail in his mouth and then he did stop dead in his tracks, halting Ashpaw's progress with a swift but necessary yank. "Do you want to walk into an ambush?" He mewed breathlessly.
Just then, Crowblaze leaped over the bodies with a murderous snarl and ran past him and Ashpaw. Prepared to tackle the enormous dark tabby, Russethawk lurched forward, shouting. "Crowblaze! Crowblaze come back! There's nothing we can do to Leopardyowl right now. We have to get them back to camp."
The intense orange stare of Crowblaze reappeared, the tom's muzzle twisted into a fearsome look that would have sent a shiver through any cat he met on the battlefield. "We have to DO something, Leopardyowl deserves to die for what he's done—"
"I know, I know. You're right, Crowblaze." Russethawk's somber expression did not cool the other tom's anger, but it helped bring him back down to reason.
"Owlflight, take Mottledpelt... Crowblaze, you get Rippletail, Ashpaw get Sunstride."
"And what are you going to do? Bring that filthy piece of crowfood back to camp?" Crowblaze threw a venomous glare at the body of Cobragaze.
Russesthawk shook his head. "No. I'm going to watch for cover, and then tell Stormheart what's happened. You're right—you're all right, we need to settle this matter once and for all."
It was obvious that Leopardyowl knew of Bluewave and Ottersplash's journey to the Moon Tree. Russethawk's claws sank into the wet grass, his stomach and his heart switching places. He didn't know if the Purists were so far outside the Code that they would attack a medicine cat and deputy—but Russethawk didn't trust them.
Bluewave can hold his own... and they wouldn't dare harm Ottersplash. .... Right?
With an anguished look at his fallen Clanmates, Russethawk urged them all back to camp. "I'll tell Lizardleap," he murmured to the group. "Owlflight if you could tell Duststorm about his mother..."
They were easily the calmest of the four, and he knew that Crowblaze in particular did not have the tact needed to deliver such horrific news.

Owlflight watched numbly as Ashpaw rushed past her, Crowblaze on her heels as they darted after Leopardyowl, dead leaves scattering in their wake. She couldn't bring herself to follow them, as it would mean leaving her dead clan mates behind. They needed to be buried, to be treated with the respect they hadn't been given in their murders.
She stood sagely by Russethawk as he called them back, tail low and morose as she looked around her at the carnage. She nodded as she was told to take Mottledpelt, grasping the body by the scruff gently in her jaws as she listened to what the others were saying.
So we're leaving Cobragaze...
She thought to herself, feeling a moment of sorrow flash fleetingly across her heart. Cobragaze had been a clan mate, had been like family to her as much as any other RainClan cat was, and now she was going to stand idly by while he was left without a burial or a warrior's rites.
Good
She told herself, steeling her emotions as she turned away, nodding silently as Russethawk asked her to be the one to break the news to Duststorm. She didn't relish the idea, but she hoped that perhaps she could be calm enough that the news wold be best coming from her.
Anger and despair wrestled in her heart, but the she-cat kept herself steady as she padded back to camp, gently dragging Mottledpelt with her.

I have changed, I have changed, just like you, just like you...
As her tail was yanked, teeth none too gentle in her flesh, Ashpaw nearly fell face first to the ground, but managed to catch herself. She whirled around, her claws already unsheathed, and raised her paw to strike out at whichever mangy fleabag had grabbed her. Then she realized it was no purist come to commit more murder and she paused, her paw still raised to strike, as she registered Russethawk's words. Her tail lashed and she was about to argue when Crowblaze raced past them. She nearly followed but Russethawk called him back and a moment later her reappeared, seething just as she was.
She spat crossly, ears flattened against her head. There was plenty they could do to Leopardyowl now. These cats were already dead, happily in StarClan, they were the ones who could wait while the patrol brought their killers to justice rather than letting them get away! She looked at Crowblaze, hoping he would leave again, his fury burning as hot as her own, but he stayed. Her tail lashed again and she threw a glare at Russethawk. This sentimentality was a waste of time. The dead could wait.
“Fine,” she spat, “If they kill again while we we're wasting time not pursuing them, you can live with it!” She hissed in frustration at the red warrior and whipped around. Her tail lashing the entire time, she stalked over to Sunstride's body, her lip curling as the scent of blood and death filled her nose and mouth as he bent to grab the tom's scruff. Her hackles were up, thinking about her own kin killing again while she was here doing nothing about it. She was related to a murderer. She had been hoping all this time that Whitewater wasn't involved, but she hadn't even stopped to think about Surgeclaw.
She shuddered; they shared the same blood. As ridiculous as it was, she felt as though she was personally responsible for bringing him to justice, to clear herself and Rushwhisker of any guilt by association, so no cat could ever doubt their loyalties. Her ears flattened at how her own thoughts sounded to herself... how close they must be to how the purist murderers were thinking. She felt... she felt as though she needed to cleanse her own bloodline of the stain of Surgeclaw. She shuddered again, dragging Sunstride's limp body back toward camp, rage, disgust, fear, and shame all roiling within her belly, the weight of them all almost enough to make her sick.
I'm still alive, I'm still alive, I cannot apologize, no....
