"Come on sweet kit, just drink a little water."
Honeykit stumbled on weak legs, barely able to scent the sky springs with the amount of crust and mucus covering her nose. Her breath rattled in her lungs when she inhaled, and rasped on the exhale.
Mama... blearily, the exhausted kitten glanced around for Lotusrain, but the action nearly toppled her over, her face colliding with Ivywhisker's flank as her world veered sharply left.
"Cmon Honeykit," murmured another kitten, her brother's skinny, shivering body pressing against hers for support. With Ivywhisker leading them, Kitepaw and Honeypaw reached the water at last, her fever-hot paws sinking into the water.
Lotusrain's gentle voice fell on almost deaf ears, Honeykit squeaking out an incoherent wail, miserable and faded. Their mother and Ivywhisker kept the two from toppling in, and together Kitekit and Honeykit were groomed, drank as much water as they were able, and were gently coaxed back to the medicine cat's den soon after.
There was fresh bedding for both kits when they returned, thanks to Dawnblossom, but Honeykit was too exhausted to acknowledge this, not so much laying down as collapsing.
Honeykit nuzzled Kitekit, and the two siblings curled up, desperate to fight off the sickness. Her eyes still kitten blue, she opened one when she heard her father's voice, their parents speaking in murmurs that could barely be made out above the coughing and heavy breaths of the others.
"How are they?" Asked Thistletail, Honeykit able to feel the timbre of his voice even through the den floor.
"Not well, but they're strong. They're fighters. A-And Ivywhisker's doing the best she can." Lotusrain's voice trembled, and Honeykit whimpered at the sound. Are we going to die?
Ivywhisker was at her side in a moment, encouraging her to lick some honey to help soothe a ragged throat. Honeykit barely tasted it, drifting into the realm of stars to the fuzzy chatter of her parents talking.
Honeykit opened her eyes, gasping. She was outside of camp! Honeykit's tail fluffed with excitement, her eyes shining as she looked at the moonlit forest. She chased a few fireflies, trying to bat their glowing bodies from the air, forgetting her sickness in a much needed moment of simple joy.
It felt so good to breathe properly. It felt so good to move without pain. "Kitekit! Where are you?" Honeykit's tiny mew sounded even smaller in a place as large as this. W-where am I?
A glowing moonlit shape caught her eye, and Honeykit turned, surprised to see her brother speaking to a cat with shining fur. She's so pretty! Who is she? Honeykit ran over, slowing respectfully when she caught up to Kitekit. "Hello, I'm Honeykit."
"Hello Honeykit, I'm Brightpath. I was medicine cat of StoneClan before you were born." The white she-cat's eyes glittered. "Many moons before, in fact."
Honeykit's eyes widened. "Are you taking us to StarClan?"
She tried to share an anxious look with Kitekit, but he only smiled, a decision already in his eyes.
Brughtpath smiled gently. "Not both of you. You have many moons ahead before you join us in the stars, Honeykit."
"I-I don't like it here any more. Why can't Kitekit come back with me?" Honeykit kneaded the ground, fear prickling her pelt.
Kitekit seemed to hear something, Brightpath also, for both cats looked to the horizon.
"I have to leave, Honeykit. Tell everyone I love them, and that I'll see you all again!" Mewed Kitekit, and he headbutted her gently in the flank. Honeykit sat down, her eyes welling.
"But I don't want you to go! Kitekit please stay!"
But Brightpath and Kitekit were already walking away, and the moonlit forest began to disappear. Honeykit was going back.
She woke up whimpering and crying for her brother, mewing Kitekit's name until Ivywhisker woke with a start to check on them. But Honeykit, already desperately nudging her brother's still form, knew he had already left them for good.
