They didn't normally find snakes this big in StoneClan territory. But the rains had likely flushed it down from the mountains, and when Eagletalon, out on patrol with Vipertail and Redclaw, had noticed the long black banded body curling beneath the rocks, he quickly called a halt to that day's patrol.

If it had been smaller, and traveling, Eagletalon would've considered letting it be—assuming a hawk or even an eagle would snatch it from the ground to make a nice meal of it, but this snake was big enough to harm an apprentice, or even a young warrior.

It wasn't venomous, but it was strong, and Eagletalon didn't want to take the risk.

"Wolfclaw, there's a bull snake in the scrublands." Eagletalon mewed once he had returned the patrol to StoneClan's camp—the younger warriors talking excitedly about the snake. Some of them didn't yet realize that it was dangerous for multiple reasons; one, it was competition for prey, and two, it could cripple them with the right bite in the right places. He'd seen a young cat die with a bite wound to the neck before. He did not wish to see it again.

Eagletalon didn't approach Wolfclaw with this knowledge just because it was his responsibility as a senior warrior, to tell the deputy these things. He approached Wolfclaw because he knew he was the kind of cat who did not shy away from dealing with things that needed to be dealt with.

An aggressive, determined light flared in the scarred warrior's golden eyes, his smile growing across his sandy muzzle. "What do you say, Wolfclaw? Want to chase it out together?" They would probably have to kill it. Trap it between the rocks. Or push the rocks onto it.

Snake-killing was perilous for a multitude of reasons—but that's what made it fun. You know, in a 'adrenaline rush' sort of way.

Noticing his brother-in-all-but-blood, Hawkstar, approaching with pricked ears, Eagletalon repeated what he had found.
"You've got lives to spare and we're not getting any younger," chuckled Eagletalon. "Let's go kill us a snake."

“Wolfclaw, there’s a bull snake in the scrublands.”

The deputy turned his head at the sound of Eagletalon’s voice. No snake was a good snake, especially not ones that grew large. News of their unwelcome visitor made him uneasy, and he knew it needed to be dealt with immediately. Eagletalon’s eyes changed, and Wolfclaw couldn’t help but smirk. “What do you say, Wolfclaw? Want to go chase it out together?”

“Like I’d say no to a challenge like that.” Wolfclaw’s smirk grew into a broader smile. He turned his green-gold eyes to Hawkstar as he approached. Flexing his claws, he waited for Hawkstar’s response, before turning back to Eagletalon. “Lead the way. Let’s go kill us a snake.” He grinned, throwing Eagletalon’s words back at him. He couldn’t deny that the thought of battling a snake caused a flash of adrenaline to race through his veins. It had been a while since he had seen action, and this would be a good way to brush up on his battle skills and stretch out his muscles. The prospect was exciting, and being able to protect his Clan was an added bonus.

WOLFCLAW

The large, pale brown tabby had just been descending the rocks leading to his den when a commotion drew his attention. Eagletalon had recently returned from a patrol along with Redclaw and Vipertail; Hawkstar noticed the way the  senior warrior immediately set off to find the StoneClan deputy, Wolfclaw, whereas the two younger warriors escaped to excitedly discuss the patrol's events with friends. Hawkstar's ears pricked curiously as the tip of his tail twitched. He paused for a moment on his descent, before picking up his pace down the now-familiar rocks scattered between himself and the camp grounds.

They must have found something... Patrols are not that exciting, after all. He thought to himself with a slight chuckle. When his large paws made contact with the ground, the sandy tom immediately directed himself toward Eagletalon, who now stood face to face with Wolfclaw. As Hawkstar pulled into earshot of the conversation, he heard mention of chasing something out. This brought a prick of unease to the leader's pelt, along with an untameable curiosity to know just what his brother-in-all-but-blood was referring too. Luckily, Eagletalon had no qualms with repeating himself, giving the StoneClan leader a run down of the situation at paw.

Hawkstar frowned slightly. Bull snakes were not something to be taken lightly. As both other toms  most certainly knew, the non-venomous snake could pose a threat to those unaware of its strength or speed. Before he could think much further on what should be done, Eagletalon brought up a suggestion the StoneClan leader simply couldn't  refuse. A grin split the tom's mouth as his pale amber eyes flicked from Eagletalon to Wolfclaw, and back again. "Lives to spare indeed. Plus, someone has to tag along to make sure you young fools don't go and get yourself into a sticky situation!" He teased the deputy and senior warrior.

Wolfclaw voiced his approval of the plan soon after, leaving the StoneClan leader to flag down a nearby senior warrior with a wave of his tail. As the she-cat approached, Hawkstar dipped his head in greeting. "Hailstrike, Wolfclaw and I are departing with Eagletalon to check on a bull snake situation. I'm placing you in charge of camp until we return." After exchanging a few more words with the she-cat, Hawkstar turned to his two companions, leaving the light gray and brown she-cat to her temporary duties. "Now that that's settled..." His eyes flicked to Eagletalon. "I believe Wolfclaw said it as... Let's go kill us a snake!"

Oh, this would be fun.

This is why Clan life was so rewarding. As a loner, Eagletalon could easily imagine a hard-fought, potentially joyless existence. But being part of a Clan, being part of a family so large, three cats (their leader included) could leave their camp to go handle a potentially serious threat, not flee in terror, it made Eagletalon's chest swell with loyalty and pride. They were StoneClan. Not just these piles of rocks and these wind-lashed lands they called home, but the cats who stuck together and faced sometimes frightening odds for the well-being of their family.

And, admittedly, for fun too.

As they got closer to the sun-soaked boulders making up the snake's new home, Eagletalon fell into a position that was a cross between a hunter's crouch and a fighter's defensive position, accounting for the snake's speed by keeping his movements light. StoneClan cats had be careful of the things they hunted; treat them like proper enemies, not just food that fought back. "It's there, right under that overhang. Can you see it?" It was making itself impossible to find, hiding in the shade from a rocky overhang created from the cluster of boulders. There were plenty of stony pockets for lizards and mice to hide in.

It was a great place to catch something.

It was also a great place to get bitten. Eagletalon paused a couple fox lengths from the overhang, posture low to the ground, jaws parted to see what else he could sense.
"So what's the plan? Chase it out then attack, or see if we can bring the rocks down on top of it?" Both plans came with their fair share of danger—but with the three of them here, they were bound to be successful at whatever they tried.
