Snowheart had been terribly surprised that Rookfrost was going with him to the medicine cat meeting. His former mentor had stayed in camp the last few times he had gone; actually this was the first meeting Rookfrost would be attending since he had performed his full name ceremony. His ears twitched thinking about it. What sort of mentor told their apprentice to come up with their own full name? His plumed tail flicked behind him as he strode onwards, following behind his dark counterpart and staring at the back of his black head through narrowed eyes.
He hadn’t had the first idea what to name himself. For a moment he understood how leaders must feel every time they had to name a warrior. He had never really thought about names too much before Rookfrost had told him he would be naming himself. It was always something some other cat would do for you, not something you did yourself; it was never anything any cat should have had to worry about. What did he want to be called for the rest of his life? In the end he had gone to his littermates. He hadn’t wanted to tell them why he was asking, he wasn’t sure what was up with Rookfrost but he wasn’t… a normal Clan cat.
So he had asked them offhand what they thought he should be called, just because he was wondering, of course, no other reason. Surely he would be getting his full name soon and he was just interested to hear their ideas. Icewhisker had suggested Snowcloud and Snowfeather. Snowcloud made him think of their father and… he didn’t really want to think about him constantly every time he heard his own name. Snowfeather he had liked. It reminded him of Dovesong a little bit, dove and feather. But Frostfire had suggested Snowheart, because he was a big softy, and after a little more thought he had to agree with his sister that it fit him quite well.
Rookfrost had performed the ceremony, given him his new name in front of the other medicine cats, the name he had decided upon with the help of his littermates. And then he had ceased going to the meetings altogether, which had suited the newly named Snowheart just fine, even if it had initially surprised him. He supposed it wasn’t a bad idea for one of them to remain in camp in case something happened. After all, the journey to the Moon Tree and back was not a quick one. And besides, Rookfrost clearly didn’t speak with StarClan. It had become rather obvious to Snowheart some moons ago, though he kept it to himself. There was no concrete evidence for it, just… a feeling, a knowing. He lived and worked with Rookfrost every day after all.
He sighed as the cavern to the Moon Tree came into view and waved his tail for their escort to make themselves comfortable. It appeared they were the first to arrive. He padded past Rookfrost and entered the cavern first, glancing back at the dark tom. He couldn’t help but ask, “Why did you come?” Why this time? He had been so uninterested previously. What could have possibly made him want to come? He didn’t come for StarClan, he certainly couldn’t be coming to socialize, he didn’t seem to care to socialize with anyone at all, at least not that Snowheart had seen. He wasn’t even sure his former mentor would humor him with an answer, and if he did, if it would be the truth. He would probably just tell him to figure it out himself and leave it at that.
