It was only because Zephyrfang knew how much Brokensong respected Lionstar that he bit back any rebuttals, gazing with exasperation at the broad golden back of their Clan leader as he turned away from the loner-turned-Clanmate, likely going to set up patrols for sunhigh. Zephyrfang was not used to all these rules, he did not like having his movements constricted like this, he didn't need babysitting, of course he knew he could crow about this until the sun went down and it wouldn't change Lionstar's opinion.
The tabby tom's tail lashed once, twice, but when he caught sight of Brokensong exiting camp to go on an assigned patrol, he felt a little of his agitation subside, so strong a balm was her presence for him. Fine, I'll behave. But only because I love her so much to follow these ridiculous rules. Becoming a TreeClanner had been a lot more challenging than he'd anticipated, in the beginning. Zephyrfang was used to wandering wherever he pleased, ignoring boundaries because they simply hadn't applied to him - he loved stretching out under StarClan's Claws, just gazing up at the light-speckled night skies and enjoying the simple beauty of it. His life was much simpler then. Of course, he'd been very very single, then too. So his past life and his current one had some positives and minuses, just like anything else; he knew which one he'd choose in a heartbeat, if asked again and again and again.
He'd choose that hazel-and-green eyed beauty who'd gotten a hold of his heart so tightly, for a cat so gentle.
Seeking out his babysitter, Zephyrfang waved him over with a flick of his tail, not caring that Thornstrike was a senior warrior. "I'm heading out, you'll probably wanna keep up." Wearing a bold grin, the warrior's tawny face wore an almost challenging look as he turned and set off towards the entrance. He could prove to Lionstar and everyone else in the Clan that he wasn't going anywhere (at least, not over into territories that didn't belong to them).

you will never be alone againlove will make it all right-------------------------------------- Thornstrike accepted Lionstar's new assignment for him with a small nod. He was pleasantly surprised that his leader had entrusted him with the task of emphasizing the Warrior Code with Zephyrfang; he felt it an honor to teach the Code to someone unfamiliar with it. The Code dictated his life, as it should with all warriors. And now that the former loner had given up his name to join the Clan, it was important that his fellow warrior learn and uphold the Code, lest he be disciplined and treated like an apprentice even further.
Before he could approach his new charge, however, the warrior sought him out with little more than a tailflip. Thornstrike frowned, but before he could say anything, Zephyrfang spoke.
"I'm heading out, you'll probably wanna keep up."
He scowled as he raced after the warrior and out of TreeClan camp, casting a gaze back at Lionstar before catching up to the other tom. He let Zephyrfang lead until they reached a place where Thornstrike felt the prey running. He dropped into a crouch and pounced on a mouse, burying the small rodent under a bush before turning to watch his companion.
Amber eyes calmly watched him hunt, assessing him much like he would an apprentice, a thoughtful eye on his crouch, leap, and pawsteps across the forest floor. The senior warrior had decided to just watch, for now. Zehyrfang was used to providing for himself. He just needed to be retrained to think of a group, not just one person. Cold, calculating emerald eyes watched from the shadowed undergrowth among Treeclan's territory. Brown tabby fur, striped and dark, helped the she-cat blend in perfectly with the brown and green surroundings in which she found herself. Claws dug into the soft dirt beneath her paws as she held herself in place, waiting for the two toms to come closer and closer to her hidden position.
She had found it easy to disguise her scent and mask it with the over powering and disgusting scent of Treeclan. Tail flickered behind her as vengeance glowed in those cold, but familiar green orbs of the young, rogue, she-cat. Should she have know about her past rather than the false stories that Shantani had told her, she would have realized that she was in the clan that birthed her.
But to her, from Shantani's raising, this was the clan that stole her brother away, the clan that made him fall in-love with a she-cat and broke Shatani's heart. Her brother, not by birth but by stories only, the brother she had been raised to rip his life away so vengefully to avenge her mother who had passed away the last Leafbare.
Zuma was so close she could smell victory on her paws as she gave a furious screech, launching herself at her brother, "Zuma!" Her voice rang out loud and clear, claws outstretched as she tackled into his larger body. Of course, Zuma was no longer the tom's name, but she wasn't aware the clan he moved to had changed it to a warrior name.
Long, sharp claws sunk their way through the pelt of Zuma, or rather Zephyrfang, as she latched herself onto the older tom, intending, though it would never happen with another warrior there, to end his life in a blood and violent way. Fire burned in those liquid green orbs of hers as Wasp made sure her claws were in his shoulder good and tight, and any struggling he may do would cause more damage to his shoulder than to her.
"Prepare to die!" She yowled, her smaller, lean tabby body clinging to his larger body as she bared her fangs, intending to sink them into his neck with ease. Or what she thought would be easy, granted she forgot their age difference.

"Zuma!"
The broad-shouldered tawny warrior tensed, his head jerking from left to right in a speedy attempt at locating the source of that shout. No one's called me that in moons. He wasn't certain he liked that name anymore, he wasn't certain he was looking forward to finding out who it was who knew him by that name - especially with Thornstrike here with him. Zephyrfang's search ended abruptly when a lean she-cat landed on his back, claws sinking into the broad expanse of his shoulders like thorns pressing in from a prickly bush. Battle light flaring in the former loner's eyes, he instantly dropped down into a low crouch and rolled, intending to crush his attacker under his superior weight - he could feel the lightness of the she-cat's body; she was either very young or perhaps a little underweight, he didn't deign to speculate on this too much.
He felts fangs press against the back of his skull in a brief bit of jostling - was this cat trying to kill him? Zephyrfang's lips parted into a hollow grin, as if he found it funny that someone out of nowhere was here to destroy him. "Face me, coward," he spoke in a low, dangerous rasp, wearing that devil-may-care grin. "But then again, you'd be much easier to look at when you're dead." Killing was against the warrior code - unless necessary. Did a personal attack on his life from some unseen assailant count? It had better. Of course, Thornstrike would likely hear the commotion and come running over - that's what Clan loyalty was about, even if Zephyrfang felt personally that Thornstrike had no real concern for his safety. Even after moons here, he was not yet a fully accepted member; there were still cats who looked at him with suspicion or dislike (or both), but he had brushed it off, his arrogance probably not contributing to their assumptions about him - but he hadn't cared. As long as he had Brokensong, they could be as rude or as apathetic as they wanted.
There was only one cat who's opinion he cared about.
Once upon a time, that had been a different cat entirely - a vengeful former NightClan she-cat he had once called mother. So who, then, was this? First thought that sprang to mind was Amara, but why would his sister be trying to kill him? Perhaps she thought he had betrayed her, becoming a Clan cat. If that was the case, he had no qualms with pinning her down and making her listen to him, as he explained his reasons for leaving without so much as a single goodbye.

Thornstrike whirled his head around at the call, awfully high-pitched for an attacker. Suddenly, a tawny-colored...kitten? launched itself out of the underbrush at Zephyrfang. He stood, claws outstretched, all senses on alert for other attackers. Perhaps the little scrap of fur was merely a distraction to draw attention away from another group of cats? He scented the air deeply, scanned the forest around them and, held still, waiting and listening.
Satisfied that the threat was just one cat, he turned his attention back to the small she-cat attached to his Clanmate. A small kitten, actually.
"Zephyrfang! Don't hurt her; she's just a kitten!" he called as he joined the other tom. Gently scruffing the she-cat, he lifted her off of Zephyrfang's back and kept her hefted in the air for a moment until he felt her relax. Setting her down on the ground, Thornstrike placed a paw, claws unsheathed, on her to keep her from running away.
"Who are you?" he asked, staring down at the strange kitten. She acted (and smelled) like a rogue, but also looked vaguely familiar to him. What could a kitten have against Zephyrfang to yowl "prepare to die" at him? This kitten obviously had a death wish to ambush two experienced fighters alone. And she had called him Zuma, the tom's loner name. That meant that she had to have known him from before he joined TreeClan. Turning to his Clanmate, Thornstrike asked another question.

The young she-cat wasn't expecting to be over powered by the other Treeclanner that her 'brother' called a clan-mate. She wasn't prepared to find out that they worked together as a team. She didn't know anything about the clans except for what Shantani had told her. And she didn't expect them to just dismiss her as if she was just some pathetic loner kit who was no bigger than a squirrel, soaking wet.
The tiny, tabby scrap of fur flailed violently when she was pulled from Zuma's body, and though she didn't even make a dent in the annoying tom's skin, she still would have liked to try. After a few moments of her limbs wailing around in the air, claws slashing and nothing, she slumped in Thornstrike's grasp and after a few moments was pinned to the ground.
"Get off!" She squeaked, her pretty green eyes ablaze with fire. "I'm a Princess, you can't treat me like this!" She yowled, her high pitched voice cracking the air between the three cats as she tried to escape from Thornstrike's paw. It was no use however, she was far too weak from lack of food and being so underweight and under trained.
Her eyes darted over to Zuma-Zephyrfang when the tom above her spoke. Of course her brother, adopted or otherwise, didn't know who she was. He had left Shantani by the time she had been born. "My name is Wasp! Daughter to Shantani!" She growled, a squeaky growl, but a growl nonetheless.
"Zuma left our mother, and she died wanting revenge on you for leaving!" Wasp spat out, venom laced her tongue as she glared ever coldly at the tawny warrior of her 'brother'. She would have never know that all Shantani had told her was lie, that Zephyrfang was not her brother, that Amara wasn't her sister and that Shantani herself was not her mother.
The truth, ever lost from Wasp and never spoken by the she-cat who raised her, was that Wasp had been born in the heart of Treeclan, a would-be warrior so to speak. She had been every brainwashed at a young age and her memory of Treeclan lost forever.

"Zephyrfang! Don't hurt her; she's just a kitten!"
She's a what? That explained the light weight, and the high, non-intimidating voice that had been telling him to die just heartbeats ago; the kitten was plucked from his back by Thornstrike, and Zephyrfang gave his pelt a good shake, as if to rid himself of the sensation of her tiny needle-sharp claws digging into his shoulders, turning to face the diminutive assailant. Again, a voice that was almost a kitten's best parody of fierceness reached the tawny warrior's ears, and this time his face registered some surprise, golden eyes enlarging at the news. Shatani's daughter? That must be a joke. His mother couldn't possibly have taken another mate after Meko, and if she had, it must have been after Zephyrfang had cast off his old life as Zuma and joined Brokensong in TreeClan. It wasn't even the news that his mother was dead that unsettled him, it was the idea that he had a little sister he'd never met before that was putting a bad taste in his mouth.
Zephyrfang stared at the little kitten, uncertain of what to make of her; instinct told him her story had to be a lie, something fabricated to get him to lower his guard somehow. "Well you must've known my mother, the vengeance part sounds like her." He shared a quick look with Thornstrike, adding with false sweetness. "Wonderful she-cat, she was also so sweetnatured." Shatani had been anything but. Her words had been honeycoated when he'd done something right, and quickly turned to fire and acid when he strayed from the path she had chosen for him; that path hadn't included a certain beautiful tortoiseshell she-cat, so he forged his own instead.
"I've never met this kitten in my life, let's take her back to Lionstar - see what he wants to do with her." Zephyrfang's urge to hunt had been squashed by this unexpected revelation named Wasp, and he wasn't feeling quite so eager to take advantage of the confusion to slip away from Thornstrike the second Wasp started swinging again. I need to get to the bottom of this. If his mother had somehow brainwashed some poor cat attacking him - or worse, attacking Brokensong - then someone was going to have to clean up that mess. Zephyrfang, as much as he wanted to deny all relation to his crazy dead mother and her crazy, useless vengeance plots, the kitten struggling in Thornstrike's grasp was proof enough that it wasn't going to be a simple endeavor.
Maybe once this was sorted, he could finally be free of his old life, and could start his new one with Brokensong with no more thoughts of the past.

Thornstrike raised an eyebrow at the other warrior. His mother? That was from his loner days. What kind of mother was that to cause this kitten to attack two powerful TreeClan warriors? The kit had some bravado to attempt such a thing. He looked closer at the small she-kit under his paw. She was scrawny, underfed, and malnourished. She couldn't even kill a fly, he thought. This whole encounter had made him even more confused.
"I've never met this kitten in my life, let's take her back to Lionstar - see what he wants to do with her."
He nodded. "That's a good idea. Can you pick up the mouse I buried under that bush?" He pointed with a flick of his tail. Thornstrike was impressed that he suggested bringing the kit back to Lionstar. It showed he was thinking as a Clanmate. The territory respect would come in time. Perhaps Thornstrike would bring Zephyrfang along on a border patrol to explain things and see what he thought of how the Clans lived. Addressing his current mindset would be the only way to change it.
Thornstrike looked down at the she-kit. "Hold still. You're trespassing on TreeClan territory and you've attempted the life of two TreeClan warriors. I am taking you back to our camp to talk to our leader, Lionstar."
