'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down When they all should let us be We belong to you and me
He had tried his best. The tomcat's unruly mottled fur had been smoothed out and he had spent a few hours ripping out tangles and dried mud. He had prepared a speech and had tried to smooth out as many kinks in his words as possible. If the nature of his speech hadn't been questionable, he would've considered asking one of his clan mates. Admittedly, he had had plenty of time to prepare himself for the meeting; he had been cooped up in the RainClan medicine cat den recovering from injuries he left a border scuffle with for nearly half a moon. Gorgelight's opponent had left him with several gashes. In retrospect, if it hadn't been for his clan mates, he may not have left with his life.
No matter what shape the battle had left Gorgelight in, he detested time in the Medicine Cat Den. Had Swanfeather agreed for him to slip out of the Medicine Cat Den when he wanted to, Gorgelight could have come to NightClan territory much sooner. Unfortunately, his injuries had been too sensitive to movement for him to leave the den and Swanfeather had kept a careful eye on him.
Even now, as the tomcat trudged through stinky, unfamiliar territory, he winced with every step. The pain Gorgelight felt wouldn't stop him from his journey because the journey would relieve another more cutting pain he felt; heartache. The massive russet tomcat was looking for a cat he missed dearly: Echobreeze. Though the two were from different clans, his love for her was pure. Unfortunately, the mottled tom hadn't seen Echobreeze for nearly a moon and a half and they had ended their time together on questionable terms. Gorgelight had tried to take their relationship from a friendship to something more and she had rejected his brave move. The RainClanner had been left wondered what he had done wrong, feeling sorry that he had made her feel uncomfortable, and generally sad. The pair had planned a meeting time during the last Gathering to formerly define their relationship (he assumed), but his aforementioned injuries had prevented him from leaving the medicine cat den, let alone camp.
The day of the meeting, Gorgelight was a ball of despair. He imagined her pretty calico pelt waving in the Greenleaf air as she waited for him to arrive, and her face when he didn't. The RainClan tom sought to explain himself to her, to help her understand why he hadn't been able to meet with her. The mottled tom didn't have very high expectations for his meeting. He did not expect her to forgive him for standing her up. He didn't know why he wanted to meet with her, really. Only that he wanted desperately to scent her, to look into her beautiful eyes, to see her smile again. The RainClanner wanted it so bad that he was willing to step into enemy territory to do it.
He risked his life to see a girl.

[smear:74ffd2]Echobreeze[/smear:ffffff] ~~~~~~~~~
Dull green eyes stared blankly at the ground below from where a small calico she-cat lay, lounging in a tree. The branch, being quite a bit lower than the ones she used to scale up to, was quite thick, so thick, in fact, that the little calico appeared to fit quite nicely upon the branch, comfortably curled up on it. A soft sigh left her lips as her mind drifted back to an event that had played over in her head for what seemed like an eternity.
Until not long ago, this particular event had brought her much joy, leaving her feeling as though she could walk on the sky itself. She would often catch herself purring for no reason, drawing questioning glances from anyone within proximity to hear her. Now, however, whenever she thought back to the day she'd first met a russet colored tom who went by the name Gorgelight, she was only met with a sharp pang deep in her chest, and a heavy sense of something akin to betrayal.
Perhaps a more apt name for what she felt was heartbreak. The delicate she-cat, not being able to read minds, had no idea that, all those nights ago, Gorgelight had wanted desperately to meet her, as they had planned, but had not been able to due to injuries. For the petite NightClan she-cat, who had waited at their designated meeting spot until the sun had risen... She'd been abandoned, stood up.
For nearly a moon and a half, she hadn't seen the tom. For nearly a moon and a half, she'd lived with the nagging feeling that everything was just a lie, built up to mock her. She hadn't felt so alone in moons.
In truth, the she-cat hadn't been eating properly, and it had begun to show in the thinning of her already thin frame. The life seemed to have left her eyes, leaving her a shell of what she had once been. ...Which hadn't been much to begun with. The nervous little she-cat had found her light at the end of the tunnel, before the cave had come crashing down around her.
She'd lost track of time a while back, but figured it was probably time for her to return to camp. She didn't exactly think anyone would notice her disappearance, but in case someone did, she should go back. Rising from her position, the little she-cat began her climb down. The first time she'd visited here, this tree had been alien to her. She had been used to the tree that overlooked RainClan territory. Now, however, she couldn't bring herself to return to that spot. And so, she'd found herself a new tree.
Her claws slipped into little indentations, sized exactly for her claws, and slowly but surely she moved down the trunk of the tree. A sound not far off, of bushes rustling caught her attention. Glancing tiredly in the direction the sound had come from, Echobreeze's near-lifeless eyes fell upon the figure of a large russet tom, who looked completely out of place in these surroundings.
With a sharp, surprised squeak, the she-cat fell from the tree, landing upon the ground with a little groan. A moment, later, however, she remembered the reason she'd been surprised from her tree, and she scrabbled to her paws, eyes wide with alarm. For a moment, she blinked, unable to believe or comprehend what she was seeing.
Her tail tucked itself between her legs as she stared at Gorgelight's figure. The momentary flush of joy that had erupted in her breast was quickly ripped to shreds by a torrent of new emotions. Anger. Sorrow. Confusion. They fought a desperate battle in her eyes, and no matter how much she tried to grasp at that anger as she spoke, she knew she failed. She could hear the sorrowful confusion that coated her usually sweet, delicate voice.
"W-What... W-Why... What're you.. Why're you... h-here..."

'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down When they all should let us be We belong to you and me
"W-What... W-Why... What're you.. Why're you... h-here..."
The dark coated mottled tom could hardly believe his eyes when he saw her. So much so that her hard fought question didn't register in his head. All the RainClanner could do for a few moments was stare at her in awe. Here you are, his mind echoed, his yellow-green gaze scrambling up and down her calico pelt and memorizing every unique detail in case this was the last time he saw her. Out of every place he could've looked in NightClan territory, he had chosen to come here first. The Branch Trail, a place with no significance to her as far as he knew; just another hunting place in NightClan's boggy, uncomfortable territory, had brought him to Echobreeze.
Coming here first, of course, had saved the warrior from scouring the rest of the territory and risking getting spotted by a passing NightClanner. NightClanners were well known for being particularly unforgiving to trespassers and relentless in their attack. In his still-healing state, Gorgelight was in no shape to get into a tussle with one of Echobreeze's clanmates to test the rumors. Despite the risk, seeing Echobreeze was worth it.
As his green gaze drifted up her pelt, his eyes met hers and he recognized strange emotion in them. Every emotion seemed to swim in their depths -- anger, sadness, fear, happiness, confusion. All of the above reminded the tomcat of her stuttering tones and her well warranted question. "T'see y-you," he meowed earnestly, his paws carrying him close to her. Gorgelight wanted desperately to touch her again, to get the same electric joy he had felt when he had last attempted to show affection.
Despite recognizing Echobreeze's faux-aggressive stance, Gorgelight chose to ignore why she was greeting him this way. Rather than recognizing that he had been the cause of her anguish over the past moon and a half, the cause of her weight loss and her depression, Gorgelight was caught up in himself. He was so immersed in the positive that he could not see the negative. He was so thrilled by her presence that Gorgelight even had a small half-smile playing along his maw. He forgot entirely about the bad note their last meeting had ended on, and how he had stood her up when they had last planned to make amends. He only saw the present: that he was here and she was here and both of them were healthy and happy. The apology and explanation of his absence the tom had practiced while in healing seemed to leave his side when he needed it most. Gorgelight was left to react purely on his emotions.
The mottled tom padded forward, his heart pounding and throbbing in his ears, directly towards the calico. The tom stretched out his neck, reaching forward to tenderly nuzzle Echobreeze. Gorgelight reached out blindly in the darkness, hoping she would receive and return his affectionate greeting with her own.

[smear:74ffd2]Echobreeze[/smear:ffffff] ~~~~~~~~~
His stuttering words brought confusion to her features once more, the petite she-cat unable to understand why he had come solely for the purpose of seeing her when he had stood her up a moon and a half ago. Her heart seized in a manner that was painful, and her eyes stung, something akin to grief threatening to take hold. Her dull green eyes examined his scarred pelt for a moment, but nothing sunk in. It pained her to see him hurt, but what did that matter? What did anything matter?
Watching a little wearily as the tom drew closer, Echobreeze's body tensed as he leaned towards her. Turning her head away from him, her teeth pricking at her cheek as she ground her teeth together. Her claws sunk into the ground as her mind and body fought with each other. Her body craved his touch again, the feel of his fur on hers. When she felt his nose touch neck, part of her wanted to lean against him, to return the touch with her own. Her mind, however, was screaming. He left you! Left you standing alone in the middle of the night! They all do! No one loves you, not your father, not your Clan, and certainly not him.
With a small step, the little calico put space between them once more. It could be seen as progress, because she hadn't flinched and skittered away. The sadness and vague anger in her eyes was clear as her green gaze focused on him. She noted briefly that if she were to reach out, their noses would touch. Instead, she pressed her chin to her chest, her eyes closing slightly, leaving nothing but the faintest trace of her green eyes as she held back a sob.
It was still traceable in her voice as she spoke however. The she-cat had never quite been able to master anger. Her anger always seemed to take a negative spin and crash back into her, turning to self-loathing, or intense grief. In this particular case, it was somewhere in the middle, balanced precariously on the edge, ready to tip either way. Her pain was still clear as her overly skinny frame shivered with a shaky breath. "Th-That's n-not... Y-You're l-lying..." Her voice quivered as she spoke, unable to meet his eyes. She feared that if she did, she'd just break down.
All the mini-pep talks she'd given herself, all the preparations she'd made, getting ready for a moment when he would reach towards her again... They had all been for nothing. He'd left her. He must be here to tell her goodbye. It was a worthless journey. His actions, or rather, lack thereof, had been explanation enough (albeit a misunderstanding). A pleading gaze was focused upon him once more, silently begging him to just leave her. He was only succeeding in bringing her more pain. After a moment, she managed to stammer out.
"Y-You... I w-waited... A-And you d-didn't sh-show... I-If you c-came here l-l-looking fo-or m-me... I-It must b-be to s-say g-goodbye... G-Goodb-byes a-are t-too painf-ful... J-Just l-leave m-me..."

'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down When they all should let us be We belong to you and me
The dark honey tom's fur bristled as his affection was so easily rejected by the petite NightClan calico. Gorgelight's nuzzle, intending to bring cool relief to a quivering, longing body, left him frostbitten and even more yearning. Does she hate me? This is the second time I've upset her. I thought ... she was hanging around the borders because she liked my company. Maybe I've completely misread her signals, the oaken tom wondered as he stepped back a tail-length or so to give the calico whatever space she needed. Confusion was running amuck in his yellow-green gaze. As the tom stood rigidly, waiting for the calico's harsh words regarding his intrusion, the breeze that the tom had once felt gentle and harmless was razor sharp.
"Th-That's n-not... Y-You're l-lying..."
Gorgelight's long fur-tipped ears perked at her stuttering voice, recognizing that beneath her accusatory tone was sadness just like his. The RainClanner furrowed his brow, trying to understand why it was Echobreeze was sad. If she really didn't care for me, wouldn't she just be angry with me? This ... is something else. But what? She clearly doesn't want me near. He thought, eying her with a plain expression of deep thought and confusion. As he looked at her, he felt a lot of pain. The pain was a mixture of pain for himself and for her. While Gorgelight was hurt by her rejection and his misunderstanding, he also felt pain for the way he had been treating her. Clearly his gesture of affection had hurt her and hurting her was something he never wanted to do. Echobreeze, with her petite and shaky frame, was a fragile creature. Gorgelight didn't want to break such beauty as her. Reflecting back, he realized that touching her in the first place had been totally mousebrained. Echobreeze had already turned away from his tender touch the last time that had met; why had he been expecting a different reaction? Looking to his paws, Gorgelight recognized that he had been selfish. He had senselessly hurt her by even meeting with Echobreeze. He had wanted to see her to apologize, but had only caused her pain by doing so. For all he knew, she could've found peace with their last meeting -- only for those wounds to get reopened by his return.
Had the dark russet tom been in a better state of mind, he may have actually listened to the content of Echobreeze's question and found hidden meaning. He may have taken a moment to wonder why she thought he was lying, rather than hearing her anger and hurt by his very existence. He could've taken a moment to think: why is she even asking, what other reason would I have for showing up here? Instead, Gorgelight stood, visibly affected by her emotions like he'd been clawed in the stomach. He quivered, he pulled his ears back, he bit back a yowl of pain. And most importantly, he waited for Echobreeze to leave. The tom had no words left for the little calico -- he was completely left in shock by her swarm of intense feelings. Gorgelight didn't really think that Echobreeze had much else to say, either. She had said her piece, hadn't she? And more importantly: haven't I been hurt enough?
Apparently not.
"Y-You... I w-waited... A-And you d-didn't sh-show... I-If you c-came here l-l-looking fo-or m-me... I-It must b-be to s-say g-goodbye... G-Goodb-byes a-are t-too painf-ful... J-Just l-leave m-me..."
In one swift gesture, Gorgelight's green gaze swept from his two white forepaws to her pretty face. His face shown with the same sadness as before, but this time, a sort of clarity glowed in his leafy gaze. Every word Echobreeze forced out made her point, and his wrongdoing, ever more clear. He had been so caught up in her beauty that he had completely forgotten his apology and her good reason for being upset. Gorgelight felt sorry he hadn't opened his meeting with Echobreeze with his apology, rather than with his touch. Though the tom felt sorry that he had caused her pain, he was glad to know the source of her anger and sorrow. This way, the russet tom could give his planned apology and leave her side without wondering further about their relationship. Of course, nothing ever went as the tom planned -- not with his speech troubles or Echobreeze's pained expression, that is.
The grand and sincere beginning he had planned to his apology fell on deaf ears. Instead, all the honey colored tom could manage were a few earnest words. "B-border fight, inju... uries ... c-couldn't come," he meowed after a clear struggle. He could only hope that his message hit home with her; honestly, it was all he could manage.

[smear:74ffd2]Echobreeze[/smear:ffffff] ~~~~~~~~~
Those dull, saddened green eyes had been focused upon the ground before her as Echobreeze finished her piece. She thought for sure that the tom would simply turn around and walk away from her, that they would never again see each other. Her heart felt heavy, and her lungs, as though someone were squeezing the life from her body with every moment that passed between them. She blinked down at her tiny paws, her claws gripped into the earth as the calico forced herself not to turn tail and run away from him. A swift movement from Gorgelight caught her attention, and the little calico let her eyes slowly shift to blink at him. The pain she was feeling was clear in her gaze as she watched him for a moment.
He seemed to be battling himself, trying desperately to say something. She knew of his speech trouble, and it was very likely that this knowledge alone was the only thing that kept her sliver of patience alive as she waited for him to say something. If he had his own piece to say before he left her forever, then so be it, she would live with it for the rest of her life, constantly replaying in her mind. When the few words he managed finally were breathed into existence, the little she-cat was left staring at him, the small light of realization slowly making its way into her dulled gaze.
It was as though she saw him for the first time. She finally noticed the small hints and remnants of the border skirmish he must have been in to have received the injuries she could still see beneath his coat. Even the way he held himself... It looked painful. He had put so much effort, had walked through so much pain, and an unfamiliar territory just to see her again. Could it be...? Her thoughts whispered to her as he eyes widened slightly. Her small frame trembled slightly, her little legs quivering beneath her too-slim frame. Her coat clung to her frail body, and her ribs showed beneath her usually soft calico pelt.
Echobreeze allowed herself to just sag, her hind legs collapsing beneath her. Her rump contacted the ground with a soft thud and for a moment, her shoulder blades were clear as the little NightClanner hung her head. Her breathing was shaky as she stared straight ahead of her, gaze focused upon the grass and dirt beneath her. Slowly, yet unsteadily, as though she barely had the strength to move, the little she-cat's gaze lifted once more to Gorgelight. For an instant, she felt as though she had so much to say, so many relieved words to speak. And yet they all crumbled away, eaten up by the sick feeling of remaining grief in her system.
Her voice was unbearably raw and quiet as she managed to stammer out a few words in response to what Gorgelight had just told her. All the sadness she had experienced this past moon and a half was suddenly clear as day in the select words that she managed to breathe.
"I... Th-thought... Y-you n-never wa-anted to s-see me a-again..."

'Cause we're living in a world of fools Breaking us down When they all should let us be We belong to you and me
Gorgelight's ruffled and abashed mahogany hued fur slumped with the rest of the tom's large frame. Gorgelight could hardly stand to see Echobreeze in the shape that she was, even if it appeared that she brightened slightly with the excuse he offered. Gorgelight had to remind himself that his absence that night was nothng he could've helped, because otherwise he could not live with himself. A quick glance over Echobreeze's pelt told the RainClanner that in his absence she had lost most of the little weight she carried under her pelt and his overactive imagination ventured far enough to wonder if his actions (or lackthereof), had been partially responsible for her physical changes. No matter if his fears brought truth, the tomcat did know without a doubt that he had done to her what he never wanted to do. He had hurt her.
"I... Th-thought... Y-you n-never wa-anted to s-see me a-again..."
The mottled tabby winced at the sound of pain in her tone. Though judging by her reaction, Echobreeze had clearly not known about his time in the medicine cat den, his excuse had done little to relieve sadness from her eyes. Whether this sadness was springing from new thoughts or a moon of past thoughts, Gorgelight did not know, but he did feel it his duty to wipe away the sadness. "N-never? That's foxd-dung," the tomcat mewed with less effort than usual, his words coming more easily with the determination he felt in his gut to set things straight with the NghtClanner.
Gorgelight was initially a bit tongue-tied in coming up with a reassuring answer to the pretty calico because his feelings about her were so radically different from how she thought he felt. When they had seen each other at the past moon's Gathering, all Gorgelight had wanted to do was talk to Echobreeze. The details about how his own clan was fairing reserved no space in Gorgelight's heart. It had been as if every other cat in StarClan's Claws besides her had disappeared. How can I put that kind of feeling into words? He asked himself, his stomach and mind churning with thoughts. Even as he struggled to come up with a valid response, his mind kept on coming back to her beautiful green eyes and her soft calico pelt. There wasn't a single part of her that he wanted to change -- not even her stutter. Echobreeze was honestly the most perfect cat he knew.
"I w-want to see you ... 'cause I love you," the mottled tom meowed in a soft, mostly unstuttering tone. His green eyes glittered with his fierce emotion and even though there was distance between the two, he had never felt as close to the NightClanner and to himself as he did at that moment.

[smear:74ffd2]Echobreeze[/smear:ffffff] ~~~~~~~~~
Everything just suddenly... Stopped. It ground to such a startling halt that Echobreeze was left reeling by the weight of what the tom had just said. Sure, in retrospect, when compared to others, it was nothing at all. He'd stammered two lines. Surely what had been spoken couldn't possibly have been that mind blowing to the timid little she-cat. But the thing is... It had been just that. He had just told her that he loved her. Had it been a mistake? Had he chosen the wrong words to describe his feelings? Or were they pure, through and through?
She found herself begging StarClan that they were the truth. Please... Let it be true... I... I want him to... To love me. She pleaded desperately with herself. She'd been pretty much deprived of any kind of love since her father had left her, blaming her for his mate's death. For a while, she hadn't thought it possible for anyone to love her. But then she had met this russet tom that stood before her. He had made her feel... Happy. She hadn't thought it possible. And then, when she had thought that he'd left her for good, her world had been destroyed. She had basically stopped eating, no longer finding the energy within her to take the time to eat.
And now here he was, standing before her having just admitted to her that he loved her. He loves me... She thought, her tail curling in delight suddenly. Other than that single motion, she stayed stalk still, blinking up at him, unable to do much more than that. It was just... So overwhelming. She found herself gazing into his eyes, which were wrought with the honesty of his words. She believed him. Without a doubt, she trusted him, felt that he was telling her exactly how he felt. Her eyes began to sting, unshed tears threatening to spill over.
A thought crossed her mind, causing her heart rate to pick up suddenly. She had been staring at him for a good portion of time. She hadn't said anything to him after his admission. She tried to imagine what he was going through right then, waiting desperately for her response. She couldn't leave him like that for any longer. It was time she said something. But... She couldn't find the words. Her throat was suddenly locked by another sob that she was withholding. And so she was left with only one choice. If she couldn't say anything, she had to do something. And no matter how much it scared her to do so, she would do it.
Rising to her paws, somehow finding the strength to pull her rump from the ground, Echobreeze closed the distance between them hastily. She had lost the battle with her tears, helpless as they filled her eyes. But she didn't care. She just had to... With only a moment of hesitation, Echobreeze, ended the distance between them by reaching out her nose, touching his neck. The feel of his fur against her nose... It was suddenly so intoxicating, so alluring to the little she-cat that she let go of that quiet, strangling sob before pressing her cheek to his fur, desperately searching out some form of comfort. She wanted to feel him want her. Wanted to feel just how much he had missed her.
Everything she had felt over the past moon and a half was reflected in the desperation that littered her touch. Her cheek trailed up his neck, reaching as high as she could, her breath shaking from both nerves and the lingering grief. But there was no doubt in her mind, no doubt in her actions. "I-I... I'm s-so so-orry... I thought... I th-thought.." She sobbed gently abandoning the thought and releasing the words she wanted so badly to tell him.
"I l-love you t-too..."
