Ambercloud
--------------------------------- Ginger fur blazed when the sun hit it at the mouth of the nursery. Shadowstep had just left her and the she-cat was lonely once more. She walked back deeper into the den and she laid down. Ambercloud was a queen in NightClan and she was expecting in Green-Leaf. She was happy about that, and she knew that Shadowstep would make a good father, she just wished that she could see him more often. But it was Leaf-Bare so prey was scarce so hunting patrols were doubled. The ginger she-cat licked her paw and she wrapped her tail around herself. Shadowstep had just been called out to go on a new patrol and she was hungry. She sighed lightly before getting up once more and she started to the mouth of the nursery once more. Times like this, was when shew as bored out of her mind. She had no idea what she could do. One thing though, she was going to go and get some sun today. The ginger she-cat walked out of the den and wandered over to the fresh kill pile only to see that there was just about no fresh kill at all. She had just eaten a few hours ago, so she laid down near the nursery, and she let the sun that was showing, soak into her fur. She purred lightly at the warm feeling and she curled up into as much of a ball as she could muster with her bulging stomach. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

BLACKWOLF
A couple of small toads was all he had been able to find near the marshlands, the normally swampy, warm area that was more or less one giant, fermenting stew, usually was a let down in leafbare months. Bringing the 'fresh' kill (more like frozen) over to the pile, Blackwolf carelessly dropped the two semi-thawed toads onto an equally frozen squirrel, ebony muzzle wrinkling in disgust. This is it?
Glancing around as though he might spy a couple of good-for-nothing apprentices dozing in the sun, what Blackwolf found instead, however, was the very pregnant queen Ambercloud curled up into a slightly misshapen ball by the nursery entrance. He wasn't sure if anyone had fed her recently or not, but it would at least cause his ever-critical, ever-bullying tendencies to be laid to rest. At least for a little while. "Hungry?" Spoke the brawny tom, setting a toad down in front of her; out of poking each piece of prey with a paw in various spots, he'd deduced that the second toad he'd brought back was the most edible at the moment. With his mouth free, Blackwolf tried to ignore the ever-unpleasant taste of dirt as he rasped his tongue down over the fur on his chest, the raised, ugly scar that stretched diagonally across it hidden beneath the dense obsidian coat.

Ambercloud
--------------------------------- Her ears perked up toward the sound of movement. She looked over and saw that Blackwolf had come back with some kill. She smiled lightly to see that even just a few frogs could bring the pile up slightly. She laid her head back down and closed her eyes as she basked in the sunlight that was there. She was happy in the clan, no matter how much food they had. Ambercloud was starting to doze off a little when Blackwolf walked over to her and laid down a frog. She opened her eyes and sat up then. "Thank you Blackwolf." She looked down at the frog then back at him and she nudged it over to him. "Would you like to share?" There was little food and she did not want the warrior going hungry as well. One thing she loved about Shadowstep, was that he never cared if she shared food with another tom, for her knew that her heart belonged to him. As she waited for him to respond, she looked around the camp and saw that they were the only ones outside really. She let that go and she looked back at the tom. Ususally, Blackwolf was one of the impatient ones who wanted things to get done fast. She was glad to see him slowing down just a little to take care of everyone. Of course, she did not really know the tom, for she really only hung out with Shadowstep, and others who actually cared to talk to her, not that Blackwolf doesnt care. She licked her chest lightly as she waited a bit more for his answer. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

BLACKWOLF
"Would you like to share?"
The brawny tom readily shook his head; not to because he was afraid of Ambercloud's mate getting the wrong idea (he wasn't afraid of anyone, as a matter-of-fact), but because he didn't want to eat anything quite yet. After he'd caught a third piece of prey, he'd allow himself the privilege of food. "No, thanks. I'll eat later. How are..." Blackwolf had never been one for small talk, but he felt it necessary in the case of the queen, however, he'd been about to ask about her kits when the obviousness of the situation smacked him in the face.
How are your kits?
Uh, still in my belly, as you can see.
Right.
He'd rather not make himself look like a total idiot.
"How are you feeling? Kits due soon?" Mewed the tom, ignoring his previous words in favor of a complete sentence this time, wrapping his thin-furred tail around his paws. Though he was momentarily content with checking up on the NightClan queens (especially in the absence of a deputy), he was wearily on the lookout for any apprentices being lazy or warriors coming back with nothing. Even if they had to steal from every Clan in the forest, NightClan would not go to bed hungry.
Not on his watch!

Ambercloud
--------------------------------- When he shook his head, she pulled the prey back over to herself and she started to take bites out of the frog. It was a little frozen, but not enough to where she could not eat it. She did appreciate the toms actions though. After a few more bites, the frog was demolished and she tucked the bones near her, for when she was to get up to go back to the nursery, she will bury them. His questions came then along with a pause. She knew that he was not to good at small talk, she purred lightly when he did stop though. When he asked her how she was feeling she smiles lightly. "I am well thank you." She mewed lightly to the tom. He was trying his best, and she liked that. It showed that he did want to have some friends, or at least, so she thought that was what it meant. "Smokefur said that they should be due once Newleaf comes." She went back to when he first started to ask questions and she looks over at the nursery then. She had two kits sleeping in her nest. She and Shadowstep had adopted them of course, she just could not let the two little ones go without parents. One was a tom, and his name was Applekit, and the other was a she-cat, named Strawberrykit. She looked back to Blackwolf then and she twitched her tail to the nursery. "For the first question you wanted to ask, Applekit and Strawberrykit are doing well. They are sleeping in the nursery right now."She did not know if he knew that she and Shadowstep had adopted the two or not, but if he did not she would tell him. Her tail wrapped back around her body then and she looked around the camp. She could see a few apprentices trying to sneak out of the apprentice den while Blackwolf was talking with her and she let out a soft purr at that. He would catch them and she knew that, they should know it as well. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

BLACKWOLF
The kits would be born soon then; thank StarClan this winter was almost over. Though he was by no means a youngster, Blackwolf had seen roughly two winters prior to this one, and out of all three, the current barren, snow and frost-laden season had to be the worst he'd ever witnessed. It made his paws numb just thinking about it. "That's good, newleaf should bring back the prey as well."
Blackwolf had generally been relatively unconcerned with kits in the nursery ever since Shadepaw and Harepaw had joined the apprentices, but with much of the secondary-leadership role falling to him with Boneshadow dead and Ravenstar in mourning, he had forced himself to start caring about everyone. Even if he didn't show it much beyond bringing them prey and making small talk, the normally immature, bigoted, brash warrior was starting to grow up, just a little at a time.
"For the first question you wanted to ask, Applekit and Strawberrykit are doing well. They are sleeping in the nursery right now."
Whiskers twitching, the ebony warrior looked beyond the pretty queen to the two little bundles sleeping soundly inside her nest; though he'd been mostly paying attention, the lack of food had left him running on less brain power than he would have liked. Wait...Applekit and Strawberrykit... They can't be that old... Then how is she this far along in her pregnancy? Fixing Ambercloud with an utterly blank stare, Blackwolf was definitely no expert on this stuff, but logic was telling him something was off, and he couldn't, for the life of him, figure out what it was.
"They're...how old are they?" His face scrunched up as though he'd suddenly been stung by a bee; he was really bad with small talk. Better settle for being blunt then; "Are they adopted?"
Blackwolf knew of the tragedy that surrounded Ashkit, Oak-kit and Thornkit, but he was not yet made aware of any other orphaned kits. Though the names did sound a little familiar...

Ambercloud
--------------------------------- Her paws started to freeze so she moved them to under her warm body. She looks at Blackwolf again and she purrs in her own agreement. Newleaf was promising for NightClan. More prey, and new kits to add to the clan. She could not wait personally. She noticed as he looked over to her adopted bundles of joys and she lets out an amused purr. She waited until he tried to connect the two factors. She loved Shadowstep even more when he said that they could adopt the two kits. The poor things were without parents, and Ambercloud did not like that. The tip of her tail flicked lightly and she lays down a little to keep her paws warmer than they already were. It was getting cold, which meant that moonhigh was on its way. After a few moments, the questions came from Blackwolf. She bite back her purr as she focused on answering him. "They are three moons old." Yes, it was recently that they had adopted the two, but she loved them as if she gave birth to them herself. She focused back on Blackwolf and she purrs again. "Yes, they are adopted. Though that does not mean I do not treat them any less of my kits than I would when my liter is born." She sternly told the tom. She would not tolerate having Applekit and Strawberrykit being told that she does not love them as much as she loves her liter. The tip of her tail flicks in slight irritation at herself for thinking about that and she licks her shoulder to calm herself. This clan is her family, not matter what. So she loves them all, but of course, her kits and adopted kits have a special place in her heart right next to her mate. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

BLACKWOLF
"Yes, they are adopted. Though that does not mean I do not treat them any less of my kits than I would when my liter is born."
Blackwolf flicked an ear at this, not quite sure what the appropriate response would be. Why are you telling ME that? It's not like I'm gonna go poke 'em with a stick and tell them no one loves them. Biting back his tongue, the ebony warrior shrugged his battle-scarred, brawny shoulders. "Okay then. That's, uh, motherly of you." What else was he supposed to say? She was a queen, he was a warrior; though Blackwolf had plenty of experience being a bully and tormenting those weaker and in his book, strange, he was not so low as to go and purposefully tease a couple of NightClan kits for their lack of real parents.
What sort of warrior would do that sort of thing?
What sort of DEPUTY could ever call himself a deputy and get away with something that despicable.
Clearing his throat loudly, Blackwolf drew the attention away from Applekit and Strawberrykit, already bored with those two adorable bundles of uninteresting cuteness; "How's Shadowstep? Was he sent out on patrol already?"
If Ravenstar was not feeling up to making a patrol herself, he would take it upon his shoulders to organize patrols and hunting parties (much to the chagrin of younger warriors and apprentices, as they were always prime targets for his verbal cynicism and natural bossiness).

Ambercloud
--------------------------------- For some reason, she could sense a little irritation off the tom and she figured it had to do with her last comment. She dipped her head slightly to apologize. She may be a Queen and be protective, but biting off innocent tom's heads are not on her agenda. She looked across the clearing then and she started to long for Shadowstep to be back already. She loved the tom, but she also knew that he needed to do his duties, these were also the times that she missed doing the clans duties as well. But now she has an important duty now, raising kits. She loves her clan, so she knows that she has to let bygones be bygones. The Queen looked back at Blackwolf though when he cleared his throat. She listened to him then. "He is fine. They called for a hunting patrol, so he volunteered to go with them." She looked at the tom once more and she took him in. "Now, please tell me, there has to be someone with you right? I mean, a handsome tom like you can not still be available?"After a moment of saying that she then bite her tongue and lowered her head a little. "Sorry, if I have crossed any lines you do not want to talk about, please do not answer. I am curious, but I do not wish to pester." She mewed quietly to the tom. She really did not want to trudge on things that he did not want to talk about. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

BLACKWOLF
"Now, please tell me, there has to be someone with you right? I mean, a handsome tom like you can not still be available?"
The docile if not mildly irate expression he wore by default quickly switched into one of a cat who had been startled. Ears folding back at the unexpected question, Blackwolf let out his rough, signature laugh. "You're not crossing any lines - I'm not seeing anyone at the moment." The question had the ebony warrior purring now that he'd gotten over his surprise; he was definitely not used to anyone asking if he had someone special in his life. Dogfang, Ratfur and his siblings generally avoided this topic out of lack of interest or no desire to pry into his personal life.
Blackwolf didn't mind if they brought it up or not, he wasn't very secretive about that sort of thing - after all, why would he be? He wasn't the sorta cat who fell to pieces just because he was in love with a she-cat, he wasn't the kind to was so attention-starved he wasn't content with himself unless everyone was pining after him. Snorting, the ebony warrior rolled his shoulders, eyes gleaming with their usual sharp glow of arrogance; "I don't think I'll be choosing any mates any time soon - it's not like I can pick just anyone."
No, this person had to be special. They had to match him on the required levels of excellence he held himself by; no weak hunters, no poor fighters, no rude, inconsiderate she-cats either. He didn't want one with a former mate or a couple of little tagalongs either! She'd have to be, not quite the female equivalent of himself (definitely not in personality, but in skill level), but someone he could look good standing next to, who wouldn't be a downgrade by any means, or an upgrade. They would be even. ...ish.
Evenish. He'd be just a little bit above her in status, but she probably wouldn't mind. She'd be too...cool to mind.
