Ravenstar had given word to the mentors of every NightClan apprentice that she wanted them all to report to the Pineneedle Clearing so that she could see how each apprentice was progressing in their battle training. This leaf-bare being so harsh, most everyone’s efforts were being focused on hunting alone with only the spare battle training session here and there, on the few days that brought in a bit more prey than usual. She wanted to make sure none of the apprentices were lacking in their battle skills, putting their ages into consideration of course. Harepaw and Shadepaw had not been training for very long, but even if they didn’t have much to show themselves, it would do well for them to see the older apprentices in action.
She had told their mentors that they did not need to report with their apprentices if their time could better be spent out hunting for the Clan, but that they could come if they wished. Normally she would have trusted Boneshadow to oversee most of the apprentices’ training, but now…. Her tail lashed as she huddled at the center of the clearing, waiting for the apprentices to arrive. It had only been about seven days since Boneshadow had sacrificed himself and Ravenstar was trying hard to go on with life as normal. She still had not chosen a deputy and had scathing remarks for any cat who tried to hurry her into the decision. She had nine lives, she wasn’t going anywhere any time soon. She would choose her new deputy when she was well and ready… but who could ever take Boneshadow’s place?
Her ears twitched, hearing approaching pawsteps and jolting herself out her depressing thoughts. It wouldn’t do to be preoccupied with what was passed when she was supposed to be assessing the apprentices’ battle skills. She licked her chest fur a few times and sat up straight again. A number of the older apprentices were about ready to become warriors, to join Clawstorm in the warrior’s den. For them, this would be their battle assessment. If all went well she would oversee their hunting assessments tomorrow and perhaps the next day NightClan would gain a few more warriors, if their mentors agreed that they were ready.

Palepaw and Blackpaw walked together towards the place where they were to meet their Clan leader for training. Blackpaw went on ranting about some thing or another, and Palepaw tried to block him out, her head unmoving from a forward position despite the animated motions of her brother. The she-cat was still holding her grudge against him, though she doubted that the tom noticed by his actions.
"Why do we have to do group training?" the black apprentice meowed dramatically, his tail lashing. "It's not fun at all! It's cold, it's damp, and I just want to warm up in my nest!" Blackpaw went on and on. The only reason he was even going to the group training was because the pair's older brother had made him promise that he would. Palepaw simply rolled her eyes, though she didn't let the tom see.
The white she-cat appeared first, with Blackpaw right behind her still muttering his complaints. He stopped on the edge of the clearing and his snow-white sister stepped forward and dipped her head to Ravenstar. "I'm ready to start whenever you are," Palepaw meowed, trying to act nonchalant. In truth, she was excited to train with the leader herself - Palepaw had always admired Ravenstar's strength, despite her small size.

Although he adored his current mentor, Snowlark. The thought of training with Nightclan's leader was riveting, an offer he refused to pass up once it came along. The black silhouette of the tom's smaller-than-average figure emerged from the dark cover of the apprentice's den, silvery eyes instantaneously finding the familiar figure of Ravenstar in the camp's heart, closely followed by fellow apprentices: Palepaw and Blackpaw. The tom blinked thoughtfully, elegant strides advancing across the terrain with a ghostly precision. Despite the obsidian tom's leg still having a minor ache, it was nowhere near a setback that would stop him from being an incredible aspect to witness in battle. He was aiming to impress Ravenstar, and, he wasn't about to do anything less than just that.
The apprentice seated himself at the open flank of Palepaw, a charming nudge offered to the she-cat's shoulder followed by the affectionate flicker of his tail. Of course, there was no real feelings here. But, Palepaw would likely have a sense as to how Darkpaw tended to work. A small glance was spared in Blackpaw's direction before he turned his head upward to meet Ravenstar's gaze. He lowered his head into a formal dip, respect for the she-cat radiating from the inspiring twinkle of his light gray eyes. “Greetings, Ravenstar.” He stated calmly, black tail curling over his front paws. Harepaw woke up and she stretched slightly before she walked over to where the rest of the apprentices were gathering with Ravenstar. She dipped her head to the leader and she looked around. There were a good amount of cats around, but not a whole lot. Well, as long as I get some training I should be good. The she-cat sat down as she waited. She did not see her brother, and she let that go. His mentor probably wants to train him.
Harepaw looks up and she looks at the few apprentices who are here and she wraps her tail around her paws. She was not going to say anything, she was here for the training. She heard an apprentice complaining and she rolled her eyes lightly before she waited for Ravenstar to tell them what they are to do.

I read the news today oh boy About a lucky man who made the grade And though the news was rather sad Well I just had to laugh The mostly dark gray tomcat had been sitting in NightClan camp, brooding and watching his ivory paws draw lines in the dirt on the morning of the apprentice training. Blackwolf, per Ravenstar's instructions, had told him about the massive, compulsory battle training that he was to have with the other apprentices a few days ago and since then, Grimpaw's paws had been itching for the day to come soon. It was not common for Grimpaw to get excited in the daily rigor of life -- in fact, Grimpaw believed that life's hardships made no part of life whatsoever enjoyable.
And yet, there he sat, waiting for Ravenstar to leave camp so he could trail behind shortly after. Blackwolf's training had been very successful, the gray and white apprentice thought, and there was a small, kitten-life part of him that wished to show off his new found abilities to his peers. And more importantly, the more he trained, with Blackwolf or otherwise, the more the fantasy of killing demon could become a reality.
Once the yellow eyes of the tom spotted Ravenstar exiting camp, the apprentice stood for a moment and closed his eyes and gave his body a good stretch. When his eyes opened, his paws launched forward, following Ravenstar's scent, while maintaining enough distance to not appear overly eager.
Once he arrived, the tom settled and gave the other apprentices a curt tip of his head. His yellow eyes, for the most part, focused on Ravenstar and whatever orders she might dole out. GRIMPAW

F R O G P A W !
You could tell something was off just by the sheer silence the dappled feline seemed to be holding on to; though she let a smile pull at the corners of her mouth and the spark in her honey-colored eyes to return, her aura wasn't radiating the same vibes it normally did. "Hello - Sorry for the hold up." Though she was looking at Darkpaw, Palepaw, Blackpaw, Harepaw and Grimpaw, her words were more for Ravenstar than anyone else.
It was too hard to look the small black and white she-cat in the eyes, it was too hard when one felt personally responsible for the death of the Clan deputy. Having cast aside her usual joking tendencies and roguish charm, the Frogpaw that settled down next to the dark tom with the pale eyes was a quieter, broodier and serious kind of Frogpaw. She was here to battle train, she wasn't here to socialize or crack jokes and tease Darkpaw; she was here to make sure that her time spent with Boneshadow would never be in vain. Greeting Darkpaw a little more warmly than the others, the pretty marbled feline smiled, nudging his shoulder gently with a mottled one of her own, murmuring "I was talking to Thornkit, that's why I'm late. He's...feisty for such a little guy."
Her thin tail lightly tapped against the ground, snorting at the interesting conversation she'd just had with the buff-colored kitten in the nursery. "He wanted to go to battle training, it took forever to talk him out of it."

Shadepaw was pushed out of his nest early that morning by his sister, prodding him to get up and join her in the apprentice wide battle training. Giving his gray fur a few fluffy shakes to ride himself of sleep he strode out of the apprentice den to see his sister sitting near Ravenstar. Without greeting anyone else Shadepaw took his place by his sibling and flicked his tail to tuck in front of his paws. His breathe came out in a little cloud but the tom-cat was doing his best to ignore the cold dampness of the camp and lack of over all warmth after leaving his nest.
He longed to return to his nest for a few winks of sleep, warm up his already cold paws, but he wouldn't dare complain. Looking sideways to his sister he gave her a warm glance before returning all his attention to Ravenstar, ears perked forward to catch anything she might say concerning their group training.

Ravenstar swept her pale amber gaze over the young cats gathered before her and nodded shortly in return to each of their respective greetings. “You all know why you are here, so let us not waste precious time sitting about freezing our paws off. I want you all to treat this as an assessment. For you younger apprentices,” her gaze flicked toward Shadepaw and Harepaw, “Do not be nervous and do not compare yourself to your older peers, I will be judging your skills fairly based on how much time you have had to learn. Just do you best.”
She gazed over them once more, briefly, “First you will be paired off so that I might judge your skills against an opponent of similar age and experience. I want each pair to go one at a time so that everyone else can watch and perhaps learn something in the process, whether it be from your mistakes or your triumphs.” There were an odd number of apprentices, but it shouldn’t be much of a problem, “Frogpaw, as Boneshadow’s apprentice I trust you can handle fighting twice.” Her wording almost made it sound like he was still alive. Ravenstar had yet refused to refer to him as if he were dead… gone perhaps, but not dead, not gone forever…. Her ears twitched, “You will fight Grimpaw first, and then you may sit back and rest and watch the others before fighting Darkpaw last, since you three are the oldest and closest in experience.”
She looked over the others, “Harepaw, you and Shadepaw will go next, followed of course Darkpaw and Frogpaw again.” She did not consider that Frogpaw might NOT be able to handle fighting twice. She had been Boneshadow’s apprentice and now she was HER apprentice, she expected that if she at least did not do well on her second battle that she would be able to get through it without too much trouble. As the deputy’s apprentice and now the leader’s, it would be expected of her by nearly everyone. Perhaps it was too much to expect of her so soon after... what had happened, but she was expecting it none the less. “Frogpaw, Grimpaw…,” she nodded for them to step forward and begin, waving her tail for the others to move to the sides of the clearing to give them space and joined the spectators, sitting not far from Darkpaw.
OOC: Try not to make the fight last more than 2 or 3 posts for each of you so this thread doesn’t take forever XD

FROGPAW!
Frogpaw had been listening with building anticipation to the words her leader - and now mentor - had spoken, before a shiver of shock and excitement rippled through her marbled pelt like wildfire. She was to battle twice? Pivoting until she sought out the white she-cat that was to be her first opponent, Frogpaw's amber eyes grew analyzing as she sized up the other tom, trying to sort through her memories and find out anything and everything that could have something to do with Grimpaw. Of what she knew of him, Grimpaw had been the other cat besides her for whom Boneshadow had sacrificed his life - she found it kind of ironic that she was being asked to fight him of all cats, not to mention Darkpaw in the next round. Being pitted against two cats she had two very different connections to, Frogpaw began to think about them in a way she had never done before - as opponents to triumph over. The gray and white tom was apprenticed to Blackwolf, which was enough of a reason to be weary of him, but from what she had seen, Grimpaw was turning into a clever NightClan warrior, a powerful one who did not give his secrets away.
Stepping forward, the beautiful marbled feline was aware of all the eyes that now found their place upon her being, fixing her with their rapt attention as the prospect of a battle between the two oldest apprentices here appeared to be getting underway. Filled with a new kind of fire - a burning spirit to make her uncle proud - Frogpaw drew in a steadying, peace-bringing breath, claws unsheathed as she took her battle stance.
She made a courteous dip of her head to Grimpaw, not caring if the gesture was returned or not, giving the tom only a few seconds more to prepare himself and allow the other apprentices to move out of the way. It would be disrespectful to Boneshadow to lose this battle, and it would be disrespectful to Grimpaw to go easy on him or somehow not give her absolute best. Though she was fighting a Clanmate and not an enemy, Frogpaw fully intended to take it seriously, wanting more than anything to live up to the expectations of her uncle, her leader and of the Clan that viewed her as Boneshadow's niece.
Though Frogpaw had no desire to step out of her uncle's shadow, she did intend to become everything he had ever asked of her and more, to become the cat who would not have run away, leaving her uncle to die at the greedy teeth of a devil.
It was for all these reasons and more that Frogpaw moved first, lunging forward and striking like a viper, intending to hit Grimpaw across the shoulder in a move that would hopefully jar the other feline all the way down to his pawpads. I can't lose here, not with Ravenstar and Boneshadow watching!
