The youngling had practically flown right into his mouth, and he'd snatched it up before the ire of it's mother could peck and claw him to death; knowing better than to linger around, Eagletalon had gathered up the rest of his prey and made his way straight back to camp. Time to take Adderpaw out for a training session, he spat out another feather, sandy ears rotating, before his apprentice's familiar scent hit his nostrils and he instantly lurched towards the apprentice's den. "Adderpaw?" he called in his usual loud, masculine voice, "Time for training - pick something off the fresh-kill pile and then we'll head out." Not waiting for a reply, the warrior briskly set off towards the fresh-kill pile once more, this time scooping up the young hawk and carrying it towards the elders' den. It had occurred to him at the last minute that the softer meat and already molting feathers of the young fowl would've been easier on the elders' mouths and teeth, and thus Eagletalon dipped his head in pleasant greeting when he brought them a mid-morning meal.
"Here you go Rockfang," Eagletalon mewed to quite possibly the oldest cat in the whole forest, setting it down in front of him. "That should hold you over until tonight, eh?" He mewed good-naturedly, sharing a few more brief words with Rockfang, Mintpetal and a few other StoneClan elders. Though he was nothing less than jovial, his mind was already wandering back to Adderpaw and today's 'training plan'. We'll work on her stalking, and then a little bit of battle training if she's not too tired. That should make today worthwhile, at least for Eagletalon it did. Nothing made him happier than training StoneClan's next generation of warriors.

Adderpaw made a little grumbling noise as she woke up. That was Eagletalon's voice. Time to train already? She yawned and flexed her claws a little as she finished waking up, the remnants of her dream already fading. Oh well. It was just a dream. "Coming!" she called, stretching hurriedly before clambering out of the apprentice's den. On the one paw, her legs protested because they had been so comfortable. But on the other and much louder, Adderpaw was excited. She was going to learn things today, and though she wasn't sure what those things would be they had to be useful! This was the beginning of the end of her being just another StoneClan kit. She was on her way to being a Warrior now. Her heart swelled with pride at the thought alone. She shook off her imaginings of future glory, turning to more practical and immediate matters. The dark apprentice pulled a mouse off the fresh kill pile. She was small yet and it would be plenty to hold her through a day of training. Adderpaw was grateful, she knew a lot of warriors took a hard line stance on when apprentices were allowed to eat. She crunched eagerly on the mouse, hoping to finish before Eagletalon got back. Maybe I'll be able to replace it today, she thought. That would be something to brag to the other apprentices about!

Good. She was going to need all the energy she could get out of that little morsel, they had a lot of ground to cover, both literally and figuratively. "Ready? We'll take a tour around StoneClan territory before I teach you how to hunt!" Just as enthusiastic as she was, Eagletalon gave her an encouraging nod, flicking his tail behind him as he padded towards the camp exit, exchanging a brief greeting with those that passed him by. As she chased after him after her quick meal, Eagletalon sized her up. She's small still, but she's got spirit. He personally believed that a good warrior shouldn't be judged by the size of his paws or how hard he struck, but by the things he believed in and the causes he stood up for. Adderpaw seemed like a squeaky clean slate, ready to be filled with all the knowledge he had to share, ready to become an excellent-warrior-in-the-making, and that put Eagletalon in one heck of a good mood.
She was his second apprentice since Stoneclaw, and the two were already very different - Stoneclaw was a bit on the quieter side, but he hadn't faulted him for that, he had shown so much promise, and was currently busy living up to his potential. Adderpaw's honesty was a nice breath of fresh air. "We'll head to the Sandy Plateau first, keep an eye out for lizards and snakes, though given the weather they probably aren't out yet." Eagletalon mewed over his shoulder, traversing the terrain outside of StoneClan's camp with ease, his pace brisk. The lizards and snakes weren't likely to make an appearance until mid afternoon, when the sun had warmed up the sand to sufficient temperatures.

"Yes, Eagletalon!" she meowed. Of course she was ready, she was born ready. Well, okay, maybe not exactly born ready, but Adderpaw sure felt that way. Nothing could possibly go wrong today, she was on top of the world and ready to show it what she was made of. "I wouldn't mind seeing a snake," she went on. "I still wonder how they move."Yes they were dangerous, but something about that made the prospect all the more exciting. Adderpaw wasn't quite prepared to laugh in the face of danger, but anything was better than the same old boring StoneClan camp. She was alert and energetic, head up, ears twitching, a spring in her step. Of course, when all was said and done she'd probably be dragging her feet to get back. But that was just how training was, if you weren't bone tired at the end of the day you clearly hadn't been doing it right. Adderpaw certainly intended to do it right. [/style] ❞

"They move like flowing water, to be a little dramatic," replied the warrior, chatting with her pleasantly as they approached the Sandy Plateau with ease, the sun-warmed sand feeling pleasant on his paws. "It would be interesting to see if they weren't so troublesome - now tell me, Adderpaw, what can you smell? It's important not to rely on just your sight in places like this, when snakes and lizards could be hiding in the sand or under rocks and you wouldn't even know it." Eagletalon stared out over the sandy expanse before him, his pelt the perfect shade for this type of terrain, Adderpaw, in contrast, sticking out with her dark pelt and her bright blue eyes.
"The terrain is a bit tricky, since it's difficult to tell where it's stable and unstable, as the sand shifts sometimes beneath your paws - like so," the big sandy-hued warrior pressed his front paws down on the edge of the plateau, which had looked otherwise sturdy - but his weight immediately shifted forward as the unstable sands gave way, paws sinking in up to the wrist-joints. Eagletalon lifted them cleanly out of the sand and down on stable ground again. "You won't be buried alive in a place like this, but it can be annoying to suddenly slip on the sand, it doesn't make for the best traction either." He explained, amber eyes gleaming as he tried to recall if he'd missed something important. It was also best to let her experience things for herself too. Eagletalon mentally scolded himself for giving away too much information - it was important that she make her own discoveries and learn a sense of caution, not have it hammered into her head by her mentor.

[style=float: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 54px; color: #70FFb6; line-height: 48px; margin-right: 3px;]A dderpaw crouched a little bit on the loose sand, not used to being so out in the open. Her instincts told her to beware being so exposed, it made her an easy target for predators. As she listened to her mentor, Adderpaw's eyes remained sharp on alert for the slender shadows of preying birds.
"Okay."
She dared shut her eyes to help herself focus, breathing in the warm, dry air. She could smell traces of cat, but all of it was the StoneClan smell she'd known since birth. It was old, probably from the last apprentice and their mentor to come up here.
She recognized the smell of one of the small lizards that she sometimes saw on the fresh kill pile, probably from up here. Adderpaw opened her eyes and noticed the small, sandy hole. Aha!
"It's dry," she mewed, opening her eyes. "There's not a lot for it to hold onto, but there's been some of the Clan up here. I think there's a lizard in that hole, but it's far down in," the apprentice finished.
When Eagletalon showed her the slippery edge, her fur puffed a little in surprise at how the sand shifted, but quickly flattened out again. She'd have to watch running near edges. "But if the thing you're after doesn't know that, you can use it to trick them, right?" she offered. Adderpaw still didn't have much of a sense of where the borders of the Clan were and how far this was from them, but she doubted it was a much-contested area. Much though she thought a lot of her potential prowess, she knew that apprentices weren't taken into dangerous territory so early.
Still, it was something she'd file away. If she had to fight on sand, she'd remember.

There was a lizard down there, probably hiding from them when they'd shown up and disturbed it's sunbathing. "But tricking them isn't that easy, Adderpaw," explained the brawny sand-hued tom, flicking the tip of his tail towards the edge. "Lizards and snakes are a lot lighter than we are, unless it's a big snake or a heavy lizard, they're more likely to move over the sand without being heavy enough to make it shift. So I'd scrap that idea and think of something else; Any lizards and snakes here that you're chasing would be able to move around the weaker sand dunes with ease, but you would probably sink, slip or lose your footing. Ya got me? Though not a lot of lizards and snakes make their homes here, since there's a huge rock under all this sand, and this is where the apprentices are trained to fight."
The dusty warrior walked to the center of the plateau and dug through the thin layer of sand, revealing the thick, rough stone beneath it. Eagletalon didn't particularly feel like chasing the lizard out of it's hole for a more visual explanation - it was too time consuming and cumbersome with his big paws - but he could at least show that the Sandy Plateau wasn't all loose-footing and chilly lizards. However, He had another topic that was a little more important to discuss with his inquisitive young apprentice; he had to tell her what an adder really looked like. Turning to look at the aptly named Adderpaw, Eagletalon's eyes gleamed with all the knowledge he was willing to share with her, determined to leave no stone unturned; "I'll teach you how to hunt lizards and snakes another day, but before we head to the Sky Springs after this, there's something I need to show you."

[style=float: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 54px; color: #70FFb6; line-height: 48px; margin-right: 3px;]A dderpaw watched Eagletalon dig, curious, and when he lay the rock of the plateau bare she scrabbled a little hole in the sandy cover herself. "The sand makes it soft!" she said. That had to be why they brought apprentices up here. All the bouncing around they had to do to learn the ropes of fighting probably would've hurt on bare stone or the hardpacked, parched earth of most of StoneClan's territory.
The apprentice tilted her head at Eagletalon's last statement. "What else? There doesn't seem to be much up here," she meowed, scanning the bare expanse again and kneading her paws a little bit in the sand. There was so much she couldn't really predict. Adderpaw had heard things around camp from the older cats and she'd thought she had some idea of what it meant to be an apprentice, but it hadn't been this detailed.

"Nothing else, huh? Come with me." True, it did look like nothing but a barren excuse for territory, to the untrained eye at least, but such wasn't the case at all. Leading her to the edge of the plateau, Eagletalon began to shift aside a small seemingly harmless clump of rocks. They looked as though they'd once been a bigger, stronger boulder, but something had broken it. Shoving aside one large rock, Eagletalon revealed to Adderpaw a little alcove of sorts, with a nest of dead leaves and something long, semi transparent and incredibly dry. Pointing to the empty snake-husk with his tail, the diamond pattern barely able to be indentified in the dried snake-skin, Eagletalon looked to Adderpaw, eyes gleaming. "What do you think that is? Go on, have a good sniff."
The sooner she could identify the smell and look of an adder, the better. He didn't want her namesake to literally be the death of her. That would be a cruel, cruel irony if ever there was one.

Adderpaw padded after Eagletalon, tail swinging in her curiosity as he uncovered the small hole in the rocks. At his invitation she moved forward to investigate, whiskers twitching as they brushed against the stone. She was a bit hesitant about putting her head into a small space, but it seemed unoccupied and while she did smell snake in the hole it was not fresh enough to scare her. "It smells like snake," she answered, still sniffing eagerly at the little alcove. "It's different from the ones that go on the freshkill pile though," she added. Adderpaw furrowed her brow and sat back, squinting at the dried skin in its hole as she tried to suss it out. "It's not just because it's just an empty skin though, it smells kind of different? Is that the right answer?"Adderpaw was the very picture of puzzled seriousness, frowning at the thing intently.

"That one smells different because it's an adder. Remember it well, Adderpaw - not only is it your namesake, but it's one of the most dangerous snakes in our territory. Every warrior and apprentice should know what it smells like to avoid any accidents." Though accidents was putting it lightly, remarked Eagletalon. It was more like to avoid dying an unnecessary death - no one survived adder bites, after all. No one but a Clan leader. "A long time ago, a few StoneClan warriors managed to find an adder here and chase it off, but it left this snakeskin behind," he mewed, nudging the rock back into place. "We decided to keep the snake's old nest covered, so that we could show the apprentices what an adder smells and looks like. Adders also look a lot different than the snakes that occasionally show up on the fresh kill pile. They've got a dark diamond pattern going down their backs, and they're also larger." Large enough to steal a kit from it's mother before she can say StarClan.
Personally, Eagletalon hated snakes and all their kind. Perhaps it was because he was named after something that killed snakes on a regular basis, he had adopted the idea that snakes were good-for-nothing belly crawlers whose only purpose in this life was to make things more difficult for his Clan. Ironically, he had an apprentice by the name of Adderpaw, and had the absolute opposite view of her despite his loathing of serpents.

Adderpaw stretched out her neck to look more closely at the skin before Eagletalon sealed it away. Had it really been there for a long time? That renewed her interest and she thought as the stone blocked her view of the old shed. She wondered which of StoneClan's warriors had driven the snake away, they had to have been very brave. Adderpaw privately wondered if it came down to it, if she could be so brave. It was a strange moment to connect with her namesake and be reminded that it was an old and dangerous enemy of her Clan. But that's why the name meant something, didn't it? It was a strong name from a strong creature, given to a strong Kit. Adderpaw would bear it with pride. "Is the whole adder poison?" she mewed curiously, wondering if that was another reason they were never hunted. It also gave her another thought. "Wait, it can't be. Eagles eat them, don't they?"Adderpaw felt like she might have answered her own question, and that was pretty awesome.

"Very good," purred Eagletalon, nodding approvingly at his apprentice's sudden display of good deduction skills. "You're right, the whole adder isn't poisonous, it carries poison in it's mouth, so that when it bites, it kills it's prey that way." The battle-scarred tom drew his gaze up to the skies, as though picturing an epic struggle between the creature who crawled along it's belly and the raptor with the wind beneath it's wings. "Adders are dangerous because of their speed. Eagles are dangerous for the same reason - worthy opponents, eh? The adder that can kill in one bite, and the eagle that can kill an adder and carry it off in one good slice of it's talons." There was a certain amount of admiration that had entered the warrior's voice. It was with immense pride that he carried the name "Eagle". He was named after one of the few creature who could take on that leg-less beast of nightmare, the snake that slithers through the nightmares of kits and apprentices, the worry of every mother, the phantom in the tale of every elder.
Realizing he'd been lost in the moment, Eagletalon shook his head as though to clear it of his foggy reveries, turning his attention back to the intelligent brown she-cat. "C'mon, let's head to the Sky Springs - I think you'll like it, a lot of cats find something special about it." Mewing enticingly, Eagletalon signaled her to follow with a wave of his tail, the sandy warrior leaping off the plateau to pad off in the direction of one of StoneClan's favorite places to call their own. Eagletalon had a bit of a blunt personality, there was no hiding that: he didn't see anything particularly unique about the Sky Springs, but a lot of cats claimed to have a connection there, to sense that they had some kind of strange, healing energy - so who was he to refute this idea?
It wasn't to say Eagletalon was a non-believer, he very much believed in the presence of StarClan, but for some reason the tom just felt as though StarClan could only be found in a few places rather than where-ever they were needed. Perhaps it made them all the more mystical in his opinion. Perhaps it's the only way it all made sense? Regardless, Eagletalon would be plodding along to the Sky Springs with no more anticipation than he would be to go see a few rain puddles after a storm.
