Russetkit Run. Rest. Run. Rest. Run. Rest. Rinse and Repeat.
That had been Russetkit's chosen method of escape this time, the feisty young troublemaker doing everything in his tiny little power to get as far into RainClan territory as he possibly could. Weary of the patrols that might stop him, the tom crept, ran and scuttled his way through the ambush, feeling very much like a squirrel desperately trying to avoid ending up as some cat's lunch. In a way, that kinda made it more fun. Weaving his own scenario - in which he was the dashing young warrior captured by rogues, trying to make his daring escape and returned to his loved ones - into his latest escapade, Russetkit chuckled to himself, the picture of overwhelming confidence as he sauntered. Tail held up high, his paws were aching from the long distance he'd traveled, and the youngster, belly still full from breakfast, lifted up his head, mouth open, searching for the scent of water nearby. Am I still in RainClan? It didn't smell like it, in fact, he couldn't really smell a whole lot of anything. "What the heck is this place anyway?" Mewed the youngster, looking up at enormous five stones that seemed to touch the sky - he almost fell over, trying to look straight up and see where they went. ...did I just find uncharted territory? I did, didn't I? Yep, that's kinda what happens when you're awesome. "I now declare this place to be RussetClan territory! Any trespassers must immediately have their heads shoved into a beehive, such is the law of your fearless leader, Russetstar!" Keeping himself entertained, Russetkit's green eyes glittered as he contemplated climbing one of the big stone 'claw-like' structures, wondering if he could spy into every Clan from such a height. It was past sunhigh, and Blazehawk was exhausted. No one said being deputy would be easy, but then again, no one had required him to go on a hunting patrol then a border patrol one after the other. His paws ached, he hadn't eaten since the crack of dawn, and there was a feather caught on his nose from the pheasant he'd caught during the hunting patrol. Yet still, he'd padded away from camp, the sound of kits mewing and elders complaining about the walls of their den yet again too much for his tired ears. There was just too much to do in a day, and sometimes Blazehawk felt as though it all rested on his shoulders alone.
At least the weather was nice, though. Greenleaf was just easing into leaf-fall, and though the anxiety of the prey-less moons up ahead lurked eternally at the back of the red tabby tom's mind, he pushed it away to enjoy the cooling breeze through his tiger-striped fur. Before he knew it, he'd meandered towards the farthest edge of the territory: an area only browsed by the occasional border patrol and the cats heading for the Gathering. From there he could see the sharp tips of StarClan's Claws, jabbing towards the sky like a great paw swiping at the clouds. In this weather even they looked lazy, casually batting at rather than attacking the sky above. Blazehawk closed his eyes, twitching his long whiskers as he bathed in the glorious weather.
"What the heck is this place, anyway?"
The tom's eyes snapped open, pupils shrinking until they were merely a slit of black amongst the leaf-green depths. Just as the words reached his sharp ears a scent wafted over the breeze - RainClan. And it wasn't coming from their shared border, either. Letting out a hiss of distaste, Blazehawk began shouldering through the thick undergrowth that shielded LightningClan's lush fields from the worn path leading to the Gatheringplace. His deep black tiger stripes hid him from sight in the dappled light through the trees, and he crept forward, until he was at the edge of the clearing, peering around one of the stone talons.
There was a little red apprentice there, nearly falling over itself looking at one of the claw-stones. Blazehawk bared his teeth in a silent hiss. There was only one reason for a Clan cat to be at StarClan's Claws outside of a Gathering - invasion. But that would mean the little apprentice's patrol was hiding...Tasting the air with caution, he caught no other scents besides that of the RainClan cat he was watching. Who, as he watched in confusion and distrust, proceeded to yowl his claim over the territory...in the name of RussetClan? It took all of his self-control not to snort in amusement. This cat must be fairly young, probably exploring a little too far past his borders. In fact...tufts of kit-fluff still clung to the little tom's underbelly, so he had to be fresh from the nursery at the very most. Most likely, he was an older kit, too quick to test his boundaries.
Sighing to himself, he sauntered out from behind the stone talon. "Russetstar, eh?" His voice was condescending, but light, with no threat behind his mewl. Even so, he absolutely towered over the kit, his stature greater than even the biggest TreeClan warrior. He wondered briefly if he looked like a TigerClan cat to this kit, with his night-black stripes over his thick reddish fur. When he was younger, the elders had whispered that he'd inherited his pelt from those mighty warriors of old. "I wasn't aware there was a sixth Clan in this forest..." He crouched until he was nearly at eye-level with the reddish tom, eyes narrowing as he studied him. "Rather small to be a leader, aren't you?"

Russetkit Russetkit jumped, his handsome ruddy pelt fluffed out, tail now resembling a fox's tail with the depth of his surprise. That's a HUGE c-cat... The little tom stared up at Blazehawk, momentarily too stunned to speak, the large tabby tom's ferocious, wild appearance remniscent of a great warrior of TigerClan. Actually, the first thing to enter the youngster's mind was; Tigerclaw? The much-feared vicious warrior from the days of Firestar? "N-No way..." he mewed to himself, alarmed, and shut his eyes, prepared for the end. But nothing happened. I was wrong! He's not Tigerclaw! I'm still alive! He smelled kinda funny, now that Russetkit thought about it. Puffing out his chest now that his confidence had returned and he was calming down, Russetkit easily enough pretended his whole 'frightened kitten' moment hadn't even happened. "I'm not small, you're just a giant!" He retorted with a cocky purr, green eyes aglow with an impish light. "I'm Russetstar, the mighty, fearless, courageous, super handsome and undefeated leader of RussetClan. The Clan was also named after me - because I'm legendary." Boasted the kitten, rolling over lazily to bat at the front of Blazehawk's paws, tail lashing, the kitten purring up a content storm. Ha! He's not so tough![/blockquote]

Blazehawk stared down at the tiny, smug little tom, unsure of whether he should be baffled or amused. For a moment the little cat looked utterly terrified, like he'd expected to be devoured at any moment, but now he was mewing proudly about how he was the mighty leader of his Clan and...rolling about, batting lazily at Blazehawk's big red paws. The deputy blinked, staring down at the cat, unsure of how exactly to react. Didn't RainClan cats teach their kits humility?
"Legendary, eh?" Blazehawk purred, deciding there was no harm in playing along with the little kit. After all, he was young, and he was doing no harm by being here - except for probably worrying his mother sick. He'd have to be taken back home soon, of course, but until then, Blazehawk figured he might as well let loose. "Well, then, Russetstar. I'm Blazehawk, the deputy of LightningClan. I come to you in peace." He batted idly at the kit's flailing paws, sparring back at him playfully. He'd always liked kits, actually, though he didn't get the time to interact much with the kits of his own Clan. It was nice to enjoy their innocent, confident company, even though the RainClan kit's distinct scent kept him instinctively on edge.
"Though I don't think StarClan would appreciate RussetClan claiming this place," he added, dipping his head to remain on eye-level with the tom. "This is StarClan's Claws, you know. The Clans gather here every full moon." He wondered if the kit's mother had ever told him of the Gatheringplace, or if he'd heard of it from his Clanmates. It seemed likely - Blazehawk could remember being thrilled for his first Gathering before he was even apprenticed. "You're probably worrying your mother sick, you know," he mewed thoughtfully as he eyed 'Russetstar.' "Your Clanmates, too. Even leaders can't wander off and leave their Clan worrying."

Russetkit The kitten, incredibly pleased that Blazehawk was batting back at him, faltered his purring a moment, listening to Blazehawk's words in regard to his worrying mother and concerned Clanmates. Oh pooh. What a lot of fuss about nothing! "RainCla- uh, RussetClan doesn't need to worry about me!" He insisted, eyes blazing, "I can take care of myself just fine!" At mention of StarClan's Claws, however, Russetkit sat up, looking taken aback. This was sacred ground? Whoops!"Oh I'm not claiming this place,"he tried to add coolly, "I"mmm...claiming the place around it, and all the cats have to pay a toll in order to visit this place!" I should charge them prey! That way I'd never go hungry! Russetkit was unaware of the fact that not that many cats visited StarClan's Claws outside of gatherings, so he naturally thought his plan was utterly foolproof. "...so...you're the deputy, huh? What's that like?" he couldn't help himself from mewing inquisitively, green eyes large and full of life. "I-I uh...I wouldn't know, because I'm a leader. With like 20 lives and stuff." Russetkit was obviously lying through his teeth, and the ruddy kitten wondered if Blazehawk could tell or not. Probably not. He was just such a charming individual, it was easy for others - even fearsome Lightning Clan deputies - to fall for his charms and believe his lies. [/blockquote]

Blazehawk was garnering a lot more amusement from the little kit than he'd expected to. Settling his strong haunches into a sitting position, he lifted his paw and licked it with an expression of boredom, swiping it over his ears. "A toll? Well, maybe I don't want to pay a toll, Russetstar." His green gaze flickered smugly from behind his paw as he continued to groom himself. "Perhaps we could form an alliance."
His broad ears flicked in amusement at the little tom's attempts to correct himself. From the way Russetkit was gazing at him with subtle earnest, he figured the little tom probably thought he actually believed his lies, however outlandish they were. Nonetheless, he found the small kit utterly...precious, as it were. He reminded Blazehawk of himself in his kit days. Always seeking attention and confrontation. Setting his paw back down, Blazehawk twitched his whiskers in silent mirth. "20 lives, huh? I'll bet you were so awesome you didn't even have to become deputy first like the other leaders." He shook his head a bit, letting out an entertained purr. The kit was just a bundle of personality.
"Being deputy is harder than it looks, though. I have to make sure that my Clanmates don't go...straying off." He gave Russetkit a pointed look, the first outward sign that he didn't believe the little tom's stories. Nonetheless, he humored him, standing up again and speaking his next words with an ominous growl. "It also means I have to send trespassers back to their mothers." He nudged the tom playfully with his broad nose, purring softly to show that despite the deep, growling mew he'd used for the 'threat,' he meant no harm.

Russetkit Any reference to Russetkit's bold-faced lies flew right over the kitten's head, Russetkit instead letting out a squeak as he was nudged, fighting back playfully by pouncing on Blazehawk's side. As expected, the muscular tom didn't move so much as a centimeter, but that was alright with Russetkit; the fact that he was actually getting played with was all he needed to be happy. "Yep, that's right! My Clan all realized how amazing I was and begged me to be leader!" He boasted, his eyes growing rounded, and he momentarily stopped his play growling to respond with enthusiasm towards Blazehawk's proposal. "An Alliance!" His whiskers twitched in delight. "Yeah! All LightningClan cats don't have to pay the toll, they can just show up whenever they want..." The little tom-kit chewed playfully on one of Blazehawk's paws, thinking. "You know~" Her purred, as though his words were the definition of tempting, "You could come be my deputy instead of LightningClan's. Then we can play here all the time, and we won't have to worry about anyone chasing us off because you'll be here!" That was a good idea, wasn't it? Russetkit's eyes glowed with hope and eagerness, the kitten sitting up and giving the tiger-striped tom his attention. Next to Deadstar, Blazehawk was obviously the coolest cat in the whole forest (himself included, as he was the most spectacular, wonderful cat in the whole forest, there's apparently a difference). Russetkit couldn't think of anything more fun than to stay here and play with the LightningClan deputy all day. It sure beat getting into trouble back at camp, suffering through the agonizing wait until apprenticeship. Now all he needed was for the big tom to accept his proposal. [/blockquote]

Blazehawk purred softly in pleasure, and for the moment, he'd completely forgotten that he was a LightningClan deputy and this kit was of RainClan. He was merely a tom, a cat visiting a kit who clearly craved attention that he just wasn't receiving. His chest felt tight as he considered that: when he was a kit, he too had sought attention like a starved cat would seek prey. Never knowing his father, his mother dying before he was a moon old...he didn't despise his kithood, for he was raised by the queens of the Clan and was never want for food or for shelter, but they had their own kits and as loving as they were towards him, it would never be the same. He was not birthed of their flesh and blood, did not carry the genes of themselves and their lovers. As kind as they were he still wasn't theirs. It was a grief that'd clung to his shoulders until his apprenticeship, though he'd pushed it back until it was only a nagging at the back of his mind. It was hard, being alone like that.
But at little Russetkit's proposal, a reminder of his duties and loyalties rushed back upon him like a roaring wind. He might wish otherwise, but this kit was RainClan, and shouldn't be here. Pain flashed across his green eyes as he looked down at the little kit, carefully extracting his paw from his nibbling teeth. The regret that seared him was strange - it wasn't as though he actually could be the little kit's deputy, after all. "As fun as that would be, Russetstar," he mewed, "I have to stay loyal to my Clan. What would LightningClan do without me?"
He thought about the friends he'd made in his Clan. Casual acquaintances, nothing more. He hadn't even found a mate, despite his silent wishing for one. Sometimes, despite his fierce loyalty to LightningClan and to his Clanmates, he felt like the loneliest cat in the world.
"You'll have to go home soon, too," he added, the regret clear in his voice now. He glanced up towards the sky, where the clear blue had grown marred towards the east with a cluster of dark, imposing rainclouds. "There's a storm brewing, Russetstar. I'll have to give you an escort back to your Clan."

Russetkit & Roselight Russetkit looked utterly crestfallen. Not only had Blazehawk politely refused to being his deputy, but he'd told him they were going to have to stop playing? The kitten's ears folded, and he lost all of that overbeaing confidence and enthusiasm from before, his green eyes glassy with emotion. I want to stay with Blazehawk, but... Flashes of Roselight, the cream-and-salmon-hued she-cat who gave him the most attention, his fellow nursery mates and the queens who had been so kind to him entered his mind and hardened the little tom's resolve. Russetkit sighed, tail lifeless; "I guess." He muttered, head bowed. Blazehawk had been the most interesting thing to happen to him in weeks! But even that had ended up with him still all alone...
Just as the sky started to darken a shade, the wind blowing the clouds closer towards them, a loud yowl at the top of the ridge sounded, and Russetkit nearly jumped out of his fur. "Roselight! Uh-oh," He grimaced, fur on end, eyes on the deputy, his disappointment momentarily forgotten. "You should go! She's scary when she's mad!" Of course, probably not scary enough to startle Blazehawk, but the last thing the kitten wanted to see was Blazehawk getting a piece of Roselight's mind and see him get scolded. Clan leaders - even the fake ones - just didn't get scolded in front of the cats they wanted to impress! Roselight let out a furious hiss, her cream and rose-hued pelt fluffed out to make herself look bigger than she already was, her eyes narrowed into lethal slits as she sprinted into the clearing. She was one of RainClan's best trackers, it was no surprise she'd hunted down Russetkit the second she got back from hunting. She'd been scared, afraid that, while wandering towards StarClan's Claws that he would've crossed into another cat's territory and get himself into trouble - but it looks as though trouble has found him instead. The LightningClan deputy?! She ignored her surprise and let out a low-pitched growl, cutting clear across the truce-grounds to wrap her tail around Russetkit, pulling the kitten into the soft fur on her side. "Just what do you think you're doing, tigerface? If you hurt even one hair on his pelt I'll--" The rest of her threat was drowned out by Russetkit's frustrated yowls. "He didn't hurt me, we were just playing a game! Then you showed up and ruined it!" wailed the youngster, angry. Alright, that technically wasn't true, but he'd already been in a bad mood since Blazehawk had refused his offer, and Roselight's overprotective attitude was getting to be a little much for him. Roselight flicked her ears back, nosing over him to make sure. "Hush! You're in enough trouble as it is!" She hissed under her breath, and when Roselight wasn't looking, the she-cat wearily looking him over, the ruddy kitten showed Blazehawk a roll of his eyes, as if to say; brave yourself, there's more.Of all the cats in the Clan, why'd it have to be her? Blazehawk was a bit startled to see a cream-and-rose colored she-cat appear on the crest of the ridge, her fur fluffed out in anger and eyes alight in the shadow cast by the darkening sky. It wasn't surprising that a RainClan cat had come looking for the little kit, and he recognized her, although vaguely - Rose-something. He'd seen her at Gatherings, though they'd never spoken. She made a beeline in his direction and Blazehawk stood his ground, prepared to get a tongue-lashing for being found with the kit, but he knew he'd done nothing wrong.
Sure enough, she pulled Russetkit close to her and hissed a venomous threat at Blazehawk, her tone showing that she had every intention of acting on her words. Thankfully, she didn't seem to blame the deputy for stealing the kit, so that was a win, he supposed. He shook his head, his tone calm. "I would never do such a thing," Blazehawk assured her. "I was about to bring him to your camp." He conveniently didn't mention that he'd been here for some time with the kit; no one would fault him for entertaining the little tom, but she was already angry enough and he knew when to keep his jaws shut.
Even so, he dipped his head to blink good-naturedly at Russetkit. "Don't be too angry with him, ma'am. Russetstar here is a noble little tom." His voice was warm with amusement; he winked at the tom before straightening up, flicking his tail. "He'll certainly be a credit to RainClan once he's apprenticed." That is, if he didn't get punished soundly for wandering off, but he didn't mention that, either; there was no need to upset the ruddy tom further.

Russetkit & Roselight Ma'am? Roselight sniffed, taken aback by his formality. Do I look like a ma'am? To her inward horror, Roselight was wondering if all that time spent in the nursery helping Henfeather gave her the appearance of a frazzled Queen, and was thus deserving of the address of 'ma'am'. "I'm Roselight - ma'am is a bit old, don't you think?" Her tone was still far from friendly, but she at least looked less ready to give Blazehawk a piece of her mind. She had presently placed her tail over Russetkit's mouth, intending to drown out his beligerent and exaggerated recap of how the two had met - it involved a badger with three legs and an eagle with dog-teeth, so she abruptly tuned him out. "And you would be Blazehawk," -- she recognized the handsome red and black-striped pelt of his, she had no intention of telling him this, but the LightningClan deputy was fairly popular with some of the younger, more open-minded she-cat warriors in RainClan -- "Is this a preferred stomping ground of yours?" The she-cat watched him wearily, finding his reasons for being here to be rather peculiar. Deputies are some of the busiest cats in the Clan, so why is he here? Does he really have that much leisure time? This was certainly strange behavior to Roselight, and suspicious thoughts were soon prowling across her mind like TigerClan warriors. What if he was trying to get information out of Russetkit? Quickly uncovering the little kitten's mouth, Roselight looked into her younger cousin's eyes, studying those intense green orbs of his. "Did he ask you anything strange? Anything about the Clan?" She mewed, an unpleasant feeling creeping up her spine. Russetkit snorted with disdain. "Why would he ask about the Clan? It's not like it's super interesting or something! I did invite him to become my deputy, but he refused and was gonna carry me back to camp." Deputy? Roselight blinked, taken aback. Why on earth had Russetkit asked him-- Oh wait. "Deputy of RussetClan, I presume?" She meowed, trying to fight back a slight laugh. Roselight stole a glance at the LightningClan deputy. "He asked Deadstar to be his deputy three times, so don't be surprised if he ever asks you again," Russetkit scoffed behind her, irately grooming down his chest fur. Roselight felt herself inwardly wince. I've spent so much time taking care of Henfeather and her kits that my social skills have taken a serious dive. Fully aware that she was probably going to make a fool herself, the cream-furred she-cat nudged Russetkit in the side with her nose; "We need to leave, it's going to rain..." She murmured; the LightningClan deputy had mentioned escorting Russetkit back to RainClan if she hadn't shown up, and the thought made her want to cringe. Because of her constantly trouble-making kin, the deputy of an enemy Clan had to cross over into their territory just to return him? No, that wouldn't do. [/blockquote]

Blazehawk couldn't help a purr of amusement at Roselight's horrified expression. Shaking his head, he responded, "Of course not. Can a tom not offer respect to a fellow warrior anymore, even if she's from a different Clan?" His tone was light and friendly, almost conversational, as though they'd met at a Gathering instead of such a hostile situation. After all, she had a reason to be upset, but he himself did not, and though he was a deputy that commanded respect with every pawstep he tried his best to express his harmlessness in this situation. He'd never harm a kit, ever. He wasn't a NightClan warrior, after all.
"Pleasure to meet you," Blazehawk said, twitching his whiskers. "And no, I don't frequent this area. I just happened to be on the border after patrolling when I heard...quite a strange ruckus." He flashed a playful glance at Russetkit, unable to hide his fondness of the overzealous tom. It's a shame he isn't LightningClan, he thought, not for the first time. Though he was clearly quite a pawful, Russetkit had a sharp mind and quite a bit of charisma, which would make him a popular warrior among any Clan in the future.
He was a bit taken aback at her questioning of the kit, but he couldn't honestly be offended. It certainly was strange for a tom - a deputy, no less - to be hanging around with a rival Clan's kit, and he couldn't blame her for being concerned. It was a shame, really. Blazehawk was as loyal as the next warrior, but sometimes boundaries seemed like more of a senseless anxiety than a purposeful law. He accepted them nonetheless, but sometimes he wondered what it would be like without the deep-set rivalries between Clans.
It was clear from the recognition on Roselight's pale face that this was not a new game of Russetkit's; he shook his head, whiskers quivering with the silent laughter he was holding in. "I'm not concerned. It's quite an honorable request to serve under the mighty Russetstar!" He flicked his tail towards the ruddy tom, purring. "The only leader to ever receive 20 lives." Just as the words left his mouth, though, a fearsome clap of thunder roared over their heads, a gust of wind spiraling through the undergrowth from LightningClan territory to buffet the three of them. Blazehawk, accustomed to the heavy wind from the flat terrain on which his Clan lived and hunted, merely fluffed up his fur and blinked slowly, gazing at the sky with narrowed eyes.
"You'd best hurry," he agreed, tail twitching. "The storm's blowing in fast." In fact, from the look of the clouds, it'd already hit RainClan territory. It wouldn't be long before the entire forest was left out in the gale. "Though it may be safer if I brought you to the LightningClan camp. It's closer, and the storm hasn't reached this far yet." He was careful to keep his tone purely concerned, hoping she wouldn't read too deeply into the request. He could explain the situation off to Emberstar easily, but he didn't want Roselight to believe he was aiming to drag them into a trap - especially not with Russetkit in tow. Honestly, he just wanted to make sure the kit wasn't lost in the downpour, especially considering the streams and river they'd have to cross to get to their camp - which were probably swollen past the banks by now from the look of those stormheads.
And perhaps he wanted to spend maybe a little bit longer with the pretty she-cat, but he wouldn't dare admit that to any cat, not even himself.

Russetkit & Roselight Russetkit shrank back against Roselight as a clap of thunder overhead turned the 'leader with twenty lives' into a frightened kitten with only one, Russetkit's green eyes filled, like the swollen banks of a river, with alarm. "R-Roselight--!" He whimpered, and she gave him a few reassuring licks on top of the head, purring low enough so that only he could hear. "It's alright little one, I won't let you get hurt." The pretty she-cat looked up, whiskers twitching in obvious astonishment at his invitation - the LightningClan deputy inviting the both of them back to LightningClan camp. Her first instincts were suspicion and mistrust, but knowledge of her own territory, the easily flooded rivers and streams they'd have to cross to get back home had her seriously considering his offer. "I don't think we'd be very welcome there, and I don't feel very comfortable setting foot in another Clan's camp," She began with a cautious but honest mew, before Russetkit chimed in. "YEAH! Let's go! Come on please? Please please please please please?!" He caterwauled, Roselight's ears folded back to drown out the active little tom's chanting. Actually going to visit LightningClan camp? how cool was that! None of the other kits would EVER be able to say they had been in another Clan's camp before! He'd REALLY be the top dog (well, cat) in the nursery then! Russetkit purred with excitement, affection and respect welling up in that great big heart of his for the tiger-striped tom of LightningClan. He really was the coolest, huh? A particularly strong gust, complete with the first few raindrops was enough of a deciding factor for Roselight. "I don't think going right into your camp is a good plan, but if you do know of another safe place where we can wait out the storm, then I will gladly accept your offer." THe she-cat dipped her head in earnest thanks, grateful for Blazehawk's kindness. If he hadn't offered them shelter, she probably would've been forced to carry Russetkit back to RainClan territory and wait out the storm in some hollow or rotted out stump. It would've been unpleasant and damp, but they would make the most of it. Russetkit was beside himself with joy, and disentangling himself from Roselight's tail, the tom-kit flung himself on Blazehawk, purring like a miniature thunderstorm himself, green eyes glowing. "Let's get going! The cat who ends up the wettest has to wear a pine-cone on his head for a week!" Giggling with impish delight, he trotted away from the pair, tail up. Roselight snorted, unable to find fault with a cat who was practically her younger brother. "Don't go running off again, Russetstar, you don't even know the way there!" [/blockquote]
