| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]It could have been considered good luck that StoneClan was the closest group to MoonTree; their journey would take no more than a day. At the head of her patrol of warriors, Fallingstar's wiry form weaved through the rough territory of the mountains, the chill of the altitude beginning to penetrate her thin pelt. Shivering, the leader was reminded of how harsh the journey had been the first time; she knew that at night, the temperature would drop even further, and even more so once leaf-fall gave way to leaf-bare.
Above the patrol of cats, a wisp of clouds floated through the deep blue of the sky. The weather was clear, which meant it that Fallingstar could lead her patrol with a little less care. Had the the air was enveloped with mist, as it often was, the she-cat would have created a slower pace to counteract the obscurity of an oppressive fog. Inhaling a deep breath, Fallingstar felt as if her lungs were filling with ice, and when she exhaled a thin smoke curled away from her jaw.
Pausing, the StoneClan leader glanced back to see how the rest of the patrol was doing. She didn't expect Smokeface or Hailstrike to have any trouble, but it would be Granitepaw's first patrol into the mountains, and his initiation before he became a full-fledged warrior. "We are not far," she meowed flatly, attempting to offer some encouragement to the weary party.
Still, her head was filled with thoughts of Crowfang; the tom had been an elderly, apprenticeless medicine cat, and if he had met an untimely fate, Fallingstar wished that he would appear when she entered into the forest of stars. Resuming her walk, Fallingstar fell silent again, dreadful thoughts floating around her pessimistic mind. The leader was reverting into some of her bad habits, and she almost wished that she had Eagletalon's energy by her side to encourage her, but that would have been another awkward situation that she did not wish to endure.

Weariness. Fatigue. Cold. Those emotions were dulled into nothing more than an occasional reminder at the back of her thoughts, the method with which she moved now almost mechannical. Smokeface was not some sprightly young apprentice who'd never made this trip before; she was a seasoned veteran of the forest, and a trip to the Moon Tree was nothing compared to how many miles her paws have already walked. An ear flick in Fallingstar's direction signaled that she had heard the she-cat's words, Smokeface lost in her own thoughts, her eyes glazed, but it wasn't yet at an alarming stage. For all the world it was obvious that she was still grieving, but the hatred and the anger and the sadness in her heart wasn't so easy to see, hidden behind a mourning mask of smoke.
Plodding methodically beside his mentor and a little ways behind Smokeface was Granitepaw, this being the first trip to the Moon Tree for the apprentice, his curiosity and anticipation were putting the strength back into his limbs and the glow in his eyes. The contrast between seasoned warrior and greenhorn warrior-to-be was quite obvious and almost amusing, had it not been for the grim silence surrounding Smokeface.
"We are not far,"
Granitepaw's ears pricked forward eagerly, and he quickened his pace, eyes snaking to Hailstrike serious visage. Should I ask her? Would she tell me? Finding that his curiosity was winning over everything else, the inquisitive tom mewed quietly to his mentor; "What does the Moon Tree actually look like?" There was a part of him that wanted to find out for himself, but that part was easily overwhelmed by his desire to know.

Every now and then ice blue eyes spotted a landmark that rustled something far back in her memories, where they had become little more than feelings with vague images. The only other time Hailstrike had made this trip had been as Owlclaw's new apprentice, one of the rare few who had been chosen to go at a young age. The more prominent features stuck in her memory, vague as they were through the rush of excitement that dominated the memories. Take that tree for example; it stooped short, weathered and gnarled as ever, having survived everything that the elements had thrown at it. Even as Hailpaw, the tree had earned her respect for its resiliance. Seeing it still standing moons later only reaffirmed her respect. As Fallingstar lead the patrol past the feature, Hailstrike glanced to the side at the aged bark, full of grooves and twists, before turning back again. If Granitepaw figured out that she admired a tree, she would never hear the end of it.
Beside her, said apprentice was practically trembling with suppressed curiousity, something the mentor believed only she could pick up on. With his leg fully recovered from the swimming exercises, she did not have to worry too much about it giving out on him during their trip. Her icy gaze flicked up toward Smokeface, eyes narrowing ever so slightly as they landed on the gray pelt. That idiotic queen... Hailstrike found herself wondering if Eagletalon had had any success in convincing her to drop the feud with Lionstar; she hadn't had the chance to ask before they left. Chances were that the tom had failed, but the she-cat knew that it was hard to get him to relent once he set his mind on something. Smokeface was equally stubborn and had a mother's grief to fuel her actions. Hailstrike believed that the she-cat would come out the victor, regardless of what she hoped.
A small voice broke through her thoughts and she turned to meet Granitepaw's questioning eyes. "I don't know," She responded simply. "I made this journey once, when I was younger than you, but I did not go in to see the Moon Tree. That honor is usually only reserved for those who go to share tongues with StarClan." Her tail flicked and she added, "But perhaps you'll get lucky, and Fallingstar will decide that you can accompany her."

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]The leader's dull tabby pelt was visible against the white sheet of the mountain; the group had finally reached the height at which snow was beginning to fall. Although previously Fallingstar had been shivering violently, her current condition left her only feeling small waves of trembling as her body tried desperately to combat the cold.
Their journey had been exceedingly uneventful; as the opening in to MoonTree's cave appeared in the she-cat's steady view, she knew it would be time to leave her party behind. The thin she-cat led her party up to the mouth of the cave and stepped inside, expecting the cats to follow one by one. At the very mouth of the cave it was impossible to see deeper within, and Fallingstar waited until the last of the cats had clambered inside.
"Wait here," the leader instructed. "It will be warmer inside of the cave, but step no farther." With a small nod of acknowledgement, the she-cat vanished into the darkness, leaving behind the patrol. They were probably weary, besides hungry. Without the presence of a medicine cat, there had been no cat with the knowledge of traveling herbs, and while all the warriors had eaten before they left camp, that was a great time ago.
Fallingstar had not been permitted to eat, but she was used to it. The pang in her stomach had always been dull; Falconleap had always been the one nagging her to eat, just as Darkecho did when the two were warriors together. Sliding through the shadows, the leader moved steadily, knowing that it wouldn't belong before she entered the chamber of the glowing MoonTree.
(ooc: I'll try and get Svet to jump in with Blackeagle. If it's alright with her, the plot will be that Crowfang sent Blackeagle to find a rare herb in the mountains, and after a few moons of absence, the Clan assumed him dead.)

With his body absent of the traveling herbs he and the rest of the party normally would've got, Granitepaw felt his stomach clench painfully with hunger, but he gritted his teeth and ignored it, his enthusiasm cooling off like a hot coal in a frozen lake now that he knew he wasn't going to get to see the Moon Tree. Not even Clan deputies get to see the tree. Only Medicine Cats and Leaders. A cynical voice in his head chuckled quietly. Well, since Medicine Cat is out, maybe you should focus on becoming leader? Granitepaw, a future StoneClan leader? Ha. Wasn't that a joke with a lousy punchline.
Craning his neck to see into the pitch blackness after his Clan leader, Granitepaw made a small noise of disatisfaction, knowing it was futile but having tried anyway. Great. Maybe if I ask really nicely she'll at least tell me SOMETHING about it. Hopefully. Unlikely. But still.
Left alone with his mentor and the dark-faced she-cat, Granitepaw kneaded the ground in an effort to keep his paws warm.
Smokeface, however, gazed into the blackness that was the entrance to the Moon Tree, her ears rotating to catch any outside noise, but otherwise her whole being was still. Though her surface was as still as ice, her insides were roiling and frothing with a mixture of emotions that was hard to discern. Oh Warhawk...My son... The grieving mother was quietly waiting for a sign, though knowing she would never get one, Smokeface sitting a silent vigil as she waited for the spirit of her eldest born to come forth and say something to her - even if it was something as simple as goodbye.
Oh how unbearable this all was! Such a tragedy, to take one so young, so promising, so needed. That wretched piece of fox-dung knew what he was doing the day he drowned her poor kit, he had purposefully weakened her family, weakened her Clan, and now StoneClan was suffering more than ever. The other Clans in the forest, they were not ignorant to StoneClan's behavior and their dire predicament. Perhaps they were even whispering amongst themselves, that now that Warhawk was gone, one more pillar of strength for StoneClan had fallen, StoneClan's precious 'undefeated champion' nothing more than a memory now, living on through his offspring who were too young to pose much of a threat.
Oh sometimes she felt like yowling and ripping the heavens apart. Sometimes. And then sometimes she felt nothing at all. Smokeface's words came out quietly as she turned to address Hailstrike and Granitepaw, "If anyone of you would like to take a short rest, I will keep watch." It was a surprisingly friendly offer, Smokeface having no purpose for such a thing other than to lift the strain on her Clanmates a little. Though she knew Hailstrike would refuse.

Hailstrike dipped her head at Fallingstar's instructions, halting within a tail-length of the entrance. The passage was barely wide enough for a warrior and an apprentice to stand side-by-side, and she could feel the stone's cold seeping through her fur. Head turned as icy eyes watched Fallingstar disappear into the shadows before swinging back around to stare out the entrance as soon as she had vanished from sight. After the open landscape that was their territory, the closeness of the walls made her feel more than a little uncomfortable. There was no room to move if they were attacked, and the only place to flee was inward, toward the Moon Tree. Her gaze flicked from boulder to tree and back again, hoping nothing stepped out from behind it.
She could sense the disappointment in the apprentice beside her, and with the sacred atmosphere keeping her voice low, the she-cat murmured, "Prove yourself as a loyal and trustworthy warrior, and you might just become leader; then you will be able to experience the Moon Tree firsthand." The tip of her tail twitched as her eyes briefly left the landscape to look at Granitepaw before blinking and focusing back on their original assignment. Something shifted in her as the waiting game truly kicked off, and Hailstrike let out a breath in a soft sigh, watching as it spiraled into the air. At least the cave would protect them from wind and any rain or snow. It just put her in close proximity with a feline whom she would rather avoid.
Said feline spoke, her offer a surprisingly generous one, and she turned to look at Smokeface, briefly meeting her yellow eyes, which glinted in the low light. What is this about? Hailstrike found herself studying the she-cat, wondering where this friendliness had come from. Since when had the self-absorbed she-cat paid any attention to the comforts of others? Almost immediately, the blue-eyed warrior had known her answer, if only because she did not want to leave guarding themselves to the whims of an idiotic, overemotional mother. "I appreciate the offer, Smokeface," She worked on keeping her voice even and neutral, "But I'm fine."

Two moons, that was how long this tom was gone from his clan. His mentor, Crowfang, sent him to the mountains to look for some herbs that are not near their territory. The tom was mad that it took him two moons to find it. He has missed two gatherings and two medicine cat meetings. That did not fly well in his mind, but it was for the clan, so her let it go. He walked through the trees now with a mouth full of herbs and he almost ran into a cat.
He dropped the herbs and hissed before he stopped himself. After the hiss was released, he then caught the scent of his clan leader, Fallingstar, and some warriors, Hailstrike and Smokeface. He dropped his head then. "Sorry, I did not realize who it was before I acted."he started to gather the herbs into a bundle again and he looks at the two warriors. He figured that Fallingstar must be in the presence of StarClan at the moon tree. Confusion wrapped his face then.
Why is Fallingstar talking with StarClan and not Crowfang? His forehead creased with his thoughts then and he looked at the warriors. Why am I gathering a scene of worry off of you? He looked to Smokeface and asked the she-cat. He was gathering worry and a few other emotions, but worry seemed to be the strongest. Of course, so was his confusion. He was gone for two moons yes, but what could have happened that was that bad?
He looked more now and saw some apprentices with them, and the confusion grew then. Usually, the medicine cat made this trip, but when a leader did, it was worrisome, especially when the leader took so many cats. He stood there and waited for an answer, and his tail flicks as he waited. He wanted to know if his clan was okay, and if they needed him then and now, he would race back to camp and help Crowfang.
They could be searching for me, and Fallingstar could be asking for StarClan's guidance. He mentally shook his head. Nothing that bad could be happening, right?

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]Just as the she-cat had disappeared from the vision of the others, a harsh hiss stopped her. Fallingstar spun around, the thin hairs of her rough yellow-gray coat prickling with challenge. However, as soon as the leader spotted the offending cat, her eyes widened. "Blackeagle," the leader meowed. Of course, it seemed StarClan had not completely abandoned them.
Of course, since it was so recent, the tom was probably expecting Boulderstar to be the cat leading a patrol to MoonTree instead; so much had happened in the last two moons that it would take some time to fill in their medicine cat. Green eyes scanned the form of the dark-pelted tom. In all honesty, Fallingstar had thought he was lost, but the medicine cat's appearance reassured her.
"Come," the leader meowed, though awkwardly. Blackeagle was many moons her senior, it felt strange to command him as she did the other cats of the Clans, but Fallingstar pushed the feeling aside easily. She was somewhat wary of the tom, but as she began padding down the dark cavern once again, things felt a bit more comfortable. The two left the rest of the patrol behind and Fallingstar began to fill in the tom on what had happened.
"Boulderstar has passed, currently serving as deputy is Falconleap," the tall she-cat meowed. "Crowfang has disappeared, leaving you as our only medicine cat." With that, Fallingstar fell silent, her eyes focused straight ahead. There was little to be seen in the darkness, that is, until they reached the final chamber.
MoonTree; a mystical plant with bark that glowed like starlight, buried within the mountain. It was just as mysterious now as it was when she had approached it with the name Fallingleaf less than a moon ago; when she left her old life behind her. |

Smokeface had hissed, whirling around, her fur fluffed out even further than it had already been due to the cold, her yellow eyes gleaming with fire. Blackeagle? Surprise colored her smoky features, and the senior warrior immediately began to calm down, her claws sheathing, her fur beginning to lie flat once more. She listened to the Medicine Cat's words, moderately returning back to normal. Well, back to the way she was before. "Where the heck have y--"
Interrupted mid-sentence by the presence of Fallingstar, the dull tabby she-cat having appeared, probably lured back by all the commotion, filled the black tom in, and then the two disappeared into the darker, deeper parts of the cavern. Smokeface scowled. Well how do you like that? Glancing to Hailstrike and Granitepaw, the long-furred she-cat snorted, stretching her front legs out, claws unsheathing as she worked the kinks out of her back and limbs. Blackeagle bumping into her made it quite clear to her that she was a bit... jumpy. "What has he been looking for this whole time? Magic mushrooms?" mewed the elder warrior, her ears flattening off to the side in an expression of distaste.
~*~
Granitepaw had actually been one of the few that had smelled Blackeagle before the tom had bumped into them. Just about to raise the alarm on the intruder, in stumbled Blackeagle, right into Smokeface who had come within seconds of shredding the ebony tom. Fortunately for Granitepaw, who had never actually met Blackeagle before, for whatever the reason, Hailstrike, Fallingstar and Smokeface all seemed to recognize him.
Detecting the scent of wild, strange herbs on this equally unusual cat, Granitepaw had settled for watching, highly alert and attentive, at the dialog exchanged between StoneClan's Medicine Cat Apprentice and their leader. Slowly, the gravity of the situation began to settle in, though rather than weigh upon his shoulders, it instead lifted up his heart, for this was good news, not bad. StoneClan had a Medicine Cat now! Granitepaw cast a relieved glance in Hailstrike's direction, even feeling upbeat enough to chuckle at Smokeface's irritated words. There weren't any magic mushrooms...
er, right?

Never before had she really considered anger and relief as two conflicting emotions. Not like love and hate or happiness and sadness. But as she watched Smokeface almost shred the Medicine Cat Apprentice - if he even deserved that title, for all the time he had spent away from the clan - through narrowed eyes, she found those two emotions warring for dominance inside of her. Twisting and turning, all of the feelings that had been so prominent in her, all of the stress and worry, reached their boiling point, very nearly bubbling over. The utter relief she had thought that she would feel upon the arrival of a new Medicine Cat was shoved in the background as part of her stress made itself known in irritation as her anger rose up, particularly strong. She had to bite back her first impulse, which was to give a scathing response to his completely naive question. I don't know! Maybe because Crowfang's missing, you've been gone for numerous moons, and StoneClan has had no Medicine Cat, which has put us under considerable risk! For once, she and Smokeface were on the same page, the other she-cat's question interrupted by the return of Fallingstar.
Icy eyes snapped from the tom to the she-cat, and the warrior moved out of the way to allow Blackeagle to pass. It was for the better that he get out of their presense. Both she and Smokeface needed time to regain their composure and sort through the flood of emotions. Watching the two disappear into the darkness, she could feel her heartbeat slowing down as a cold calm began to replace the fiery anger that had filled her at his abrupt arrival. Jaw clenching, she turned to look back out of the entrance, not wanting to be surprised by anymore StoneClan cats back from the dead.
"I don't know," Hailstrike responded to Smokeface's question. "But magic mushrooms or not, it should not have taken him this long to find it. Even if we had had a Medicine Cat, it is not right for him to send his apprentice off on missions that require multiple moons for him to complete." The cold calm spread throughout her, keeping the intense relief that threated to overwhelm at bay and inspiring questions that she would rather avoid considering. If a cat could stay away from his clan for that long, what was to stop him from doing it again and leaving StoneClan in the same position as before?

He dipped his head to Fallingstar when she appeared once more and he bundled his herbs back into the leaf that they were in and laid them before Smokeface before he bound after his leader. He knew that the Senior warrior wanted to ask him a question, but there was nothing he could do about it. He followed his leader to moon tree and asked no questions until they were needed. He was still confused on what this meant though and he looked around the area. He was only here with the medicine cats. Right when he was about to ask about the clan, Fallingstar answered all of his questions.
Boulderstar has passed, currently serving as deputy is Falconleap. Then a pause and he stopped when he heard the next part. Crowfang has disappeared, leaving you our only medicine cat. "What?!" He started back up after the she-cat and he slowed beside her. "When did he disappear? How long has he been gone?" The two questions escaped before anything else could be thought of, except the next statement.
"Congratulations on becoming Leader, I am sorry that I have not been around, and I hope I can help you all that I can now that I am back." He lowered his head as he walked and he thought of his mentor. Crowfang, I will always need your guidance, please do not forget about me now. He sent the prayer up to StarClan, hoping that, if Crowfang has died, he had heard his prayer for help.
He raised his head and looked up in time to see moon tree appearing before them. He sighs then and follows Fallingstar. How so much has passed in two moons, and the Medicine Cat was mad that he had been sent on that mission, but he has the herbs, so his store will have something once more. But the bad part was that he was alone now, and he had to heal his clan alone. He shook his head to be rid of the doubts that he was having and he quickened his pace to get back by Fallingstar's side.

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]"Scarcely a moon ago," the leader replied coolly, stepping slowly towards the moon tree. Fallingstar turned to face Blackeagle, her green eyes dilated from the darkness, their gazes locked as she gave him the answers he sought. "He went to speak to StarClan and never returned."
As the medicine cat began to apologize, the she-cat waved the comment away in an almost flustered manner. "We are more than happy to welcome you home, regardless." Having ended their brief conversation, the leader drew closer to Moon Tree, the pads of her feet scraping against the bleached roots. Just as she had done before, Fallingstar curled up in one of the small coves beneath the tree, her back pressed against the great bark, and closed her eyes, waiting for StarClan to invite her into their forest.
It had been a difficult journey for StoneClan, but with Blackeagle by her side, Fallingstar was becoming for confident in her position as a leader. She was certainly young, but she wouldn't let her inexperience stop her. The warrior had sworn to her former mentor that she would uphold the image of a strong leader and protect her Clan at all costs; that was what drove her. That resolution, that promise, gave her the power to keep moving forward.
Eyes flashed open and a shining haze filled Fallingstar's vision. Before her, cats with stars in their fur, and one stepped forward to speak.

"It wouldn't be unreasonable for Fallingstar to post guards, to make sure we are never in that kind of situation again." Growled Smokeface, her tone low and laced with seriousness like water was laced with arsenic. She was old enough to have seen Blackeagle go under Crowfang's tutelage, and she'd been old enough to knwo when she'd been promoted to fully fledged Medicine Cat, and yet in all her seasons she had never known a Clan to have their healer just walk out on them like that. Of course, it was her understanding that Crowfang had ordered Blackeagle to go find some special herb in the mountains, so in part Blackeagle wasn't to blame, he'd just been following orders. No, her beef was with Crowfang, it was just spilling over into Blackeagle unintentionally.
Granitepaw frowned. "Did anyone see him carrying any herbs? Do you think he found whatever he was looking for?"
The senior warrior yawned, wrapping her fluffy tail around her front paws as she sat like a stone statue. "I think Crowfang sent him off into the mountains chasing his own tail."
Granitepaw's fur prickled. Had Crowfang purposefully sent Blackeagle off in search of something that didn't exist? No, there was no...there was no reason for that... The apprentice stole a glance at Hailstrike, wanting to know what she was thinking about all of this. At that moment, Granitepaw would've given anything to figure out what had been running through Crowfang's head when this whole mess had started. He was grateful they had a black-furred, yellow-eyed solution, but there were still so many questions without answers.

To post guards around him? It was a possible solution to her question, but already Hailstrike could see numerous problems with it. "Nothing like being welcomed back by your own personal shadows," She commented dryly. Briefly, she considered the idea of only having night guards, and those would be situated around camp. It would make guards less conspicious, to be sure, but that meant that valuable warriors would be losing sleep over it. And if they were to constantly shadow Blackeagle, it would be a waste of time that could otherwise be spent hunting prey. "That would definitely make a cat feel welcome." Sarcastic. And it would certainly lead to wounded pride as well, perhaps even a grudge. Though she knew that she would never abandon StoneClan like that, it would put a considerable dent in her pride to know she was considered untrustworthy enough to have guards posted around.
As her apprentice spoke up, Hailstrike glanced at him. Flicking at ear, she gestured with her tail toward the bundle of herbs sitting closest to the senior warrior. "He left them there," She answered. "I cannot tell you whether or not they're the herbs that he was sent to find - if he was, in fact, sent to find any - but he came back with something." Just as she finished answering Granitepaw's question, Smokeface spoke up again, voicing her own very opinionated thoughts. "That may be the case," The icy-eyed warrior responded evenly, "But we shall have to wait for Blackeagle and Fallingstar to return to find out. In the mean time, what do you think about our Medicine Cat Apprentice back from the dead?
Hailstrike paused as she redirected her thoughts back to her original question. How to keep Blackeagle from disappearing on them again? "Can we trust him not to leave again?" Unfortunately, I think we may have to. She wished that she could truthfully say that she fully trusted the tom to remain loyal to StoneClan, but Crowfang's apparent betrayal had made her more reserved when it came to trusting the high ranks, as he had been their Medicine Cat. Despite her clenched jaw, the she-cat's face remained impassive as she considered the new arrival. Blackeagle will just have to prove his loyalty to me through his actions, Hailstrike decided, and then she could finally relax. But until then...

Blackeagle flashed to when he was told to go and find the mountain herbs and now he was back and his mentor was gone, and now he was the Clan's only medicine cat. He sighed and nodded solemnly. "He was a good cat, may StarClan watch over him where ever he is." Blackeagle took a quick look back to where the warriors would be and he knew that trust was going to have to be established before they could believe that he will not leave his clan again.
He moved again when Fallingstar moved to the Moon Tree and he followed. The last time he was truly here, he was still an apprentice, and he was made into a full medicine cat, then he was sent on his mission. His pads started to walk over bark and he found the same spot that he was always in when he came to converse with StarClan. He sighed before he curled up with his back touching the tree. His eyes closed and he waited for StarClan to talk to him.
A cat was moving about the Medicine cat den back at camp. He watched and started to move toward the other cat. He stopped as he saw that the cat who was moving about was Crowfang. He looked at his old mentor and he noticed the StarClan Medicine Cat stop and look at him. "Blackeagle, I am sorry that I have left you this way, but now is your time to take care of StoneClan. There is trouble coming ahead, but that is for Fallingstar to learn of. You will do well for your clan, I have taught you everything that I know and your trip to the mountains taught you more. Take care and keep your mind open to StarClan."
His mentor left then, and that was when he saw what Crowfang was doing to the den. He saw Ivy growing around the entrance to the den and he thought back to who was expecting kit. A name crossed his mind then as StarClan realized that he was not familiar with the new apprentices. "Ivypaw will be your apprentice." Crowfangs voice disappeared after that.
That was when Blackeagle awaken from his visit and he looked to Fallingstar as he waited for her to awaken from her visit as well. [/style]
