Eagletalon wet his paw and rubbed it over his face, accustomed to ignoring the ache in his shoulder muscles and the wear-and-tear on his paw pads from his usual high levels of activity, the brother of Fallingstar ever-adventurous, and forever rowdy.
Watching a pawful of StoneClan kits tussle and tumble nearby, Eagletalon kept one eye on them while the other was closed to the bright glare of the sun, his silhouette lazily stretching out before him like a black doppleganger, mimicking the casual flick of his tail. StoneClan should be proud - such energetic future warriors in the making! They reminded him of his own Adderpaw, the little she-cat for whom he was responsible, his apprentice just as enthusiastic as their youngest Clanmates. Speaking of apprentices...
Spying a gray and tan apprentice walking towards the apprentices' den, Eagletalon raised his voice to catch his attention. "Granitepaw! Have you seen Hailstrike?" The apprentice, he now noticed was rather damp, turned to look over his shoulder, silently indicating the cat Eagletalon had been asking for. Granitepaw, tired from another morning spent swimming/strengthening his leg, had been given a few hours to rest, before he would likely go out hunting with his mentor.
Now up onto all fours, Eagletalon hailed the blue-eyed she-cat with a wave of his tail, held high in a sign of greeting. "Interesting day?" Asked Eagletalon with his usual incandescent amber gaze, tone full of casual humor.

Thoughtful eyes followed Granitepaw as he strode back into camp, heading straight for the apprentice's den after exchanging a few words with Eagletalon. He had just successfully finished another swimming session, and though it had dried some on the way back, his fur was still damp from the pool. Already, she could notice subtle differences in his hunting, even some in his stride, as the strength returned to his leg, and she let the pleasant feeling of success run through her for a moment. The swimming was working, and she felt as though she was killing to mice with one blow. It strengthened his leg, but it also allowed the young tom to become more comfortable in the water, so slowly that he might not notice it himself until farther down the road. True, she sat there with him while he exercised, but she fully expected that to change in the future as well. All in all, Granitepaw's training was successful.
And it had an effect on the tom as well, outside of her tutelage. Without her prompting, he had made the effort to talk to some of the other apprentices. She was not oblivious to his actions when she wasn't around, and it pleased her to see him taking this next step. It would be good for Granitepaw to have some companions his own age and not be stuck with only his mentor for company. I suppose I would get tired of myself after a while as well, She sighed mentally, slightly amused.
While the apprentice had entered the camp, his mentor had lingered at the entrance, keeping her distance. Already, she had plans to return to the territory and hunt. Or perhaps join a border patrol. She wanted to do something productive, and she briefly considered her options. On second thought, a hunt might be in order, especially around the sky springs. She had thought that she'd heard a few mice scampering around that area. Just as she turned to leave, however, something caught her eye. Glancing back, Hailstrike noted Eagletalon watching her, waving his tail. He would not react very well if she ignored him, and sighing softly with disappointment, she realized that she would have to temporarily abandon her plans. Temporarily Nodding, she moved over to join him. "Not particularly," The warrior greeted. "I've been having Granitepaw work on strengthening his leg by swimming, as I'm sure that you noticed that he is slightly damp. What about you?"

You'd think she was allergic to standing still. Eagletalon was not at all unaware of Hailstrike's 'go go go go' personality, the tabby-marked she-cat preferring to get in as much productivity before she settled down for the night as she could. Normally Eagletalon would've encouraged this, or been following her lead and setting off himself to go get in more hunting - but for once, it was nice to cultivate their social skills rather than their hunting skills for the day. "Worked on battle training with Adderpaw, that was...interesting." There was something dismissive about the way Eagletalon answered her, as though he had something else on his mind other than the progress of either apprentice. Drawing Hailstrike in with a mischievous amber gleam, Eagletalon leaned in close, casually casting out his first proverbial fishing line: "There's a rumor going around that RainClan is holed up in LightningClan's territory. I'm not normally one for Clan politics, but this might be something worth investigating."
Eagletalon momentarily held his breath, fearing Hailstrike might be a stickler for the rules rather than the potential partner in crime he hoped she'd be. "Wanna....go check it out?" Did he mean sneaking into RainClan territory? Maybe, maybe not. Did he mean uncovering the truth behind RainClan's actual whereabouts, yes. If RainClan and LightningClan were forming an alliance - or if RainClan was somehow in LightningClan's debt, he wanted to know about it. Of course, the reckless, stupidly brave warrior was also selfishly looking for a little excitement.

Her strongest and first instinct was to immediately turn down the tom for such a foolish idea. Talking about clan politics was one thing, even if the subject was painfully dry, but investigating it was something completely different. Chances were that that would investigating the absense of RainClan would involve crossing the border, and that was strictly forbidden by the Code. But the more she thought about it, the more Hailstrike realized the growing necessity to find out the truth of this rumor. If it was true, then waiting for a Gathering might take too long. It was important for someone in StoneClan to keep up with the ever changing clan dynamics and relationships. Both RainClan and LightningClan bordered them, and if the two started becoming too friendly with each other, it could pose a potential danger to StoneClan. Even if the relationship was a debt that RainClan owed to LightningClan... A shiver ran down her spine at the prospect.
But the strongest part of her advised the warrior to avoid breaking the Warrior Code at all costs. If there was some way they could investigate without intruding upon the rule, then Hailstrike would agree without hesitation. An idea struck her. And perhaps there was a way. "I believe that it's worth checking out, yes," The she-cat replied slowly. "But before you go venturing into RainClan's territory and potentially starting a fight if the rumor is false, I suggest that we check our borders. Particularly the area where the Stone Stream meets with StarClan's Claws, as that is the fasted route from RainClan to LightningClan. If we find nothing there, then we can look for signs around StarClan's Claws itself; the signs of a moving clan do not vanish like the wind." Satisfied with her idea, Hailstrike nodded slightly to herself. It allowed them to investigate while remaining within the boundaries of the Warrior Code, satisfying both of her wishes. "How does that sound, Eagletalon?"

Eagletalon purred with satisfaction. "I knew there was a reason why I liked you," he winked at her, clearly very taken with the strategic method with which Hailstrike had revamped his whole plan. "You're right, a whole Clan moving locations doesn't just vanish in the winds. Let's get going before anyone asks us out on a patrol or a hunting party." Glancing around wearily for Falconleap, Eagletalon rose to his paws in a single shift of his muscles, his tall, evenly muscled body moving with a rough kind of grace that was hard to imitate. He was all predator, that was sure.
The idea of this mission excited him greatly. He was appreciative of having a partner in crime as well, since he would just come off as being meddlesome if he showed up at his sister's den with a few hairbrained ideas about RainClan. If he had evidence and a second voice of reason to add to his own, then Fallingstar would have to listen to him. "You know, I kind of expected you to flat out say no," voiced Eagletalon, presenting his musings to the other warrior with a thoughtful kind of tone. "I mean, don't get me wrong, I love and respect the warrior code as much as the next cat, but sometimes..." He paused in his reverie to look for the right words. "Sometimes it holds us back from doing the right thing by seeming like the proper thing to do would be to follow it's ever word. I understand it's purpose, and I appreciate it, I do, but sometimes it seems like a rock pinning us down rather than a mountain lifting us up above the rogues and traitors."
Eagletalon flicked his ears to Hailstrike, trying to read her expression. He let out a slightly abashed chuckle, trying to ease some of the awkwardness out of his system. "Was that too honest?"

If the purr that thrummed deep in his throat was anything to go by, he obviously agreed with her plan, which was very productive. Had he, for some reason, not agreed and still wanted to go parading into RainClan territory like his words had suggested, Hailstrike would have left and gone back to hunting. And he would have not been accompanied by a partner in crime. "Then it's a plan," The she-cat confirmed as she fell into step beside him, heading straight for the exit. Though her first impulse was to practically sprint there in haste, that would attract more attention and therefore be counterproductive, as another cat would surely stop them and ask where they were going and why they were in such a rush. Instead, she strode at a comfortably fast pace, slightly faster than the brisk one she normally used, but not as swift or urgent as to gain unwelcome attention.
Eagletalon began speaking again, very thoughtfully, and Hailstrike cast a sideways glance at him with slight apprehension. The tom had gained a reputation for his painfully honest mouth, and having spoken to him more than once, she had started figuring out the signs to another one of his moments of painful honesty. As with most cats, she believed that they tended to come after a period of thought, during which the feline would have to figure out how they wanted to present their musings and then come up with the right words. Hailstrike had become accustomed to Eagletalon's habits and did not tend to mind his views, as they usually saw eye to eye on things. However, his first sentence hinted that she would probably not agree with his assessment. And it turned out that she was correct. Unlike her, the tom wavered slightly from the code, and though his points might seem valid, she found that she disagreed with them. Picking her own words very carefully, she began to illustrate her point of view.
"Perhaps," Hailstrike responded lightly to the question that he had added on at the bottom. "But I, on the other hand, do not believe that it is like a burden that we must shoulder our entire lives. The Code is the foundation of clan life; it presents us with firm rules to follow that are not ambiguous in meaning, and most of these coincide with our own moral guidelines. It just allows us to cement our view of what is right and what is wrong and hand out punishment if a cat does something wrong." She paused considering for a moment, then added, "Remember, too, that it is not flawless. It may be our strongest set of rules, but it has some gaps that a cunning cat can fit through. That is what we are doing right now, is it not? According to the Code, we cannot venture onto another clan's territory, but StarClan's Claws is neutral ground; the rule does not apply there. We can still find out what we need to know, since the 'stay out of other clans' business' seems to be more implied in said rule rather than actually stated." The Code was important - without it, the clans would not exist - but though she was a devout follower, she did not fool herself into thinking that it was flawless. If it was not stated in the Warrior Code, then she could do whatever she pleased as long as it did not break a different rule. In her eyes, she stuck to it, but allowed herself to take the initiative about other topics that were not specifically covered.

Did she suspect him of wanting to abandon the warrior code? Quick to confirm that this wasn't the case, Eagletalon shook his sandy-hued head. "The Warrior Code is definitely necessary," his frowning expression slowly melted into a more amused one, giving Hailstrike a look as though she should've considered all sides of things, "Not all of us are smart enough to come up with loopholes, y'know, what's a cat to do then?"
He didn't really expect an answer from her, his intention had been to give her a little food for thought, not start an argument about their loyalties and dependency on the foundation upon which the Clans had been built. When the two had gotten far enough away from camp that breaking into a sprint wouldn't be called into question, Eagletalon flicked Hailstrike's shoulder with his tail-tip, thrusting his nose in the direction of StarClan's claws, the warrior clearly intending to pick up the pace.
The sooner they got there, the sooner they could find out the truth.
"You smell that?" As they approached the border to StarClan's claws, the fresh scents of RainClan were mingled here with the smell of cats from old gatherings, the fishy scent of the river-dwelling Clan by far the strongest smell there. It wasn't like StarClan showed up and marked their territory, so it was fairly easy to tell that another Clan had been here. "They at least stopped here, probably because of the floods," mewed Eagletalon, stepping into the gathering place with all senses on high alert. It was the smell of fear and exhaustion. These were not cats who'd gone somewhere to attack, these were hungry, soaked, shivering, distraught cats without anywhere to go but higher ground.

Hailstrike let out a soft hmm of agreement at his words about the Warrior Code and let the matter drop. But not after a dry, "Suffer in silence."Tail flicking, she easily kept pace with Eagletalon as he sped up, evidently eager to get to StarClan's Claws. Muscles moved smoothly, and legs propelled themselves forward in long strides, graceful and well-balanced. Her left foreleg, the warrior noted with satisfaction, had yet to stiffen up with the approaching leaf-bare, and she did not want to strain it too much. She could only imagine what Granitepaw would say if she collapsed in the middle of one of their training sessions because that leg gave out. He certainly would not let her forget it, that cheeky little tom.
Slowing to a halt as they reached their destination, she scoped out the area. The ground was trampled and the air practically dripping with the distinctive scent of the water-loving clan. At Eagletalon's question, the she-cat nodded before verbally confirming, "Yes. RainClan's been here." She cast her gaze toward said clan's territory as she followed the tom deeper into StarClan's Claws. Icy eyes flicked around, and her muscles repeatedly tensed than relaxed. The fur along her spine bristled slightly. Something set her on edge, and it took her a moment to identify what it exactly it was. It was the smell that lingered, thoroughly mixed with that of RainClan's. Fear was just as distinct and just as memorable as the clan's scent, and that was what set her on edge. While the two investigated, the eerie silence was only broken by soft breathing and the occasional howl of the wind. Hailstrike swallowed, and she followed the direction of the trampled ground with her gaze. "I think so too. Where do they go..?" Dread settled in her stomach as she raised her eyes, looking straight into the high moorlands of LightningClan.

"The highest point in the forest," mewed Eagletalon with a note of conviction, his own amber gaze drawn to same direction as Hailstrike's. "It makes sense - NightClan's probably severely flooded as well, so they followed the river to LightningClan territory, which is always the driest." The warrior stalked along the perimeter of StarClan's Claws, his posture that of a cat who was deeply brooding, Eagletalon usually not much of a thinker - save for situations that called for it. "I'll wager a guess - " he stole a glance at Hailstrike, the RainClan fear scent lingering in his nostrils - "That RainClan is now in LightningClan's debt. Which doesn't spell anything good for us" Ever since the battle over the Sun Stones, StoneClan's relationship with LightningClan had been at it's worst, a growing sense of hostility building between the two the same way two dogs on opposite sides of the same face began growling at each other.
If LightningClan now had RainClan's support in any territory expansion into StoneClan, whether out of a debt to be paid or a mutual desire for dryer land, it meant that StoneClan had enemies on both sides of the border, and that put them in a very perilous situation. Suddenly living in harmony had gotten a lot more difficult.
Swiveling on his paws to face his companion, Eagletalon's tail lashed with dissonance as the fur on his shoulders rose as though unsettled. "This wouldn't be the end of the world if it wasn't close to Leafbare, not like we don't have enough on our minds." And now this... Again Eagletalon looked to the LightningClan border, his expression soured as though RainClan had somehow betrayed them by seeking shelter with their enemies. Had RainClan come to them instead, surely they would've taken them in... Right? Then perhaps LightningClan would've been the ones worrying about the future instead of them.

Voice stony and grim, Hailstrike agreed, "Yes. NightClan's swamplands are nearly as low as RainClan's territory; anything drastic enough to chase RainClan from their territory will not leave NightClan unaffected." Tail flicking, she stood still, gaze moving to Eagletalon as he paced. Her thoughts flew from one part of her mind to the other, barely making connections or discarding thoughts before moving on to the next idea. "If we are correct means that NightClan will also be looking for dry land," The warrior added, "And they will not find it in RainClan's territory, not with the whole land flooded. TreeClan is their other neighbor, and they also border LightningClan." Eyes flashing, she gave Eagletalon a sharp look as something occurred to her. "This flooding might have a larger effect than I think we originally thought. This is speculation, but if NightClan is forced to flee to their territory, they will, no doubt, look for higher ground elsewhere. They could go after TreeClan, but why would they do that when they have all the information that a former spy could give them about us." She nodded as Eagletalon cast a glance in her direction, adding his piece into her summary of what could happen. "And LightningClan has already hinted that they want to expand their borders into our land. With RainClan in their debt - I agree with you that they are - they will outnumber us should they decide to make a move."
Her tail lashed just thinking about it, and she had a hard time keeping the fur along her spine flat. It was not that she doubted the strength of her own clan; it was the opposite, in fact, for she strongly believed that StoneClan was by far the strongest. But even the strongest cat could lose to numbers. The search for dry land would have only increased LightningClan's desire to expand farther into their territory. "If it were new-leaf, then I would be less worried, I agree," Hailstrike responded, eyes locked on Eagletalon's figure. "We should, I think, warn the clan about the RainClan border. Chances are that it is flooded as well, and therefore a danger to us. LightningClan's border too, should they decide to try and attack us." If anything, she felt like they were backed into a corner, with nothing else they could do but fight against the odds. It had not come to blows yet, but Hailstrike did not trust LightningClan to ignore their chance, just as she did not trust NightClan to not utilize the information that the traitor had no doubt given them.

"I don't think NightClan would've taken shelter with TreeClan - I don't know Ravenstar personally, but hasn't NightClan always come off as..." He paused, searching for the right phrase in reference to their shadow-dwelling neighbors. "Crowfang - did Shadeclaw know about him leaving? Yes, he...He was there when we all bid the Medicine Cat a safe journey." The needle-like tips of his claws scratched against the ground in obvious anger, the fur along his spine lifting as though held up by the negative energy surrounding the battle-scarred tom. Of all the times for this to happen - why now? Perhaps Fallingstar had had a right to be paranoid all this time. Perhaps her constant vigilence had finally started paying off.
But to be honest, Eagletalon would prefer the danger prowling through his sister's mind had been phantasms of her imagination - not very real threats staring them down from across enemy lines. "We're in trouble, Hailstrike. If all of this" the tom gestured with his head, tilting it in one quick snapping movement at the other Clan territories "comes to a battle, we are going to be on the losing side even before it begins. No Medicine Cat, and with Smokeface causing trouble for Lionstep, we shouldn't expect any back up." His voice reverberated out of his chest with the strength of his passion and his obvious fierce loyalty to his Clan, Eagletalon wishing he had the strength of a thousand cats - so that he might battle the devils closing in on them from all sides.
At Hailstrike's mention of going back to warn the Clan, the battle-scarred feline's tail lashed with impatience, Eagletalon kneading the ground with a reckless - though very worried - gleam in his eyes. "Agreed. We need to go back and ask if any of the elders remember any healing techniques." He stared at the she-cat warrior with a level amber gaze. "Just in case."

She found it slightly amusing. Eagletalon's voice trailed off at the end as he searched for a word to describe Ravenstar, but she knew exactly what he meant anyway. And there was no singular word that could describe NightClan's leader from Hailstrike's point of view, which was that of an outsider. The small black she-cat had always seemed to have a commanding air about her, even if the StoneClan warrior thought that she was rather cold. To his question about the traitor, Hailstrike simply nodded. "He knew," She commented, voice icy and bitter. "He knew everything that can be used against us." She hated how everything seemed to be returning to the actions of one feline, how her clan's well-being rested on the whims of an untrustworthy clan and the stolen information. Already the threat against them had been large due to the betrayal. The flooding was only an added bonus and made the she-cat wonder what StoneClan had done to deserve all of this piling up on them at once.
Eagletalon's words summed the whole situation up very well, and she locked eyes with him, grim and serious. "We are in very serious trouble," She restated, hoping that perhaps not denying the truth would make her feel better. It didn't work. "There are three clans that would no doubt love to get their paws on our land, and a fourth who would stand by and watch all because of the actions of a mousebrained, overprotective mother." Her words became laced with a hiss toward the end, showing just what she thought of Smokeface's little grudge. Shaking her head, she meowed incredulously, "Two cats, Eagletalon. The actions of two cats have sentenced us. Only two."
With a disgusted flick of her tail, she turned her back on LightningClan's territory, heading straight for their own. On the border, she paused, waiting for Eagletalon to catch up before continuing forward. Thoughtful, she mused, "Rockfang might know something; he's certainly been around long enough. And if he won't tell us, then I expect that Mintpetal will. Are you up for interrogating some grumpy elders?"

It was no secret to anyone - least of all Eagletalon - that his sister had always been the suspicious, overly cautious sort who took her job very seriously. This was only going to affect the she-cat negatively, he could feel it in his bones. At indirect mention of Smokeface's blood feud with TreeClan and Shadeclaw's treachery, a deep menace-laced hiss slipped past his tight jaw, his ears folding back into a look of utter disgust.
"I'll try to reason with Smokeface - I don't care if I have to throttle some sense into her, a blood feud isn't what StoneClan needs right now." He was left to his thoughts and his words full of 'bravado', though anyone that knew the sandy battle-scarred tom would realize that he was about as serious as an avalanche when it came to protecting his Clan. There was nothing artificial in his devotion. It was the one and only time he and Fallingstar truly showed their likemindedness. As the walls started closing in on them, on StoneClan, both siblings would steel their hearts and will the strength back into their exhausted limbs so that they could continue to fight to their last breath.
Surging on scarred legs after Hailstrike, the tom nodded immediately. "Absolutely. I'll bring them the biggest, fatest mouse I cand find if it'll help." Almost insantly his amber eyes darted off in the direction of StoneClan's choicest of hunting locations, his footsteps momentarily carrying him in their direction, as though summoned by the very depths of his being to go fulfill his right as a predator.
Buuuut they needed to get the news back to Fallingstar and Falconleap first. Quickening his pace with that growing sense of dread and anger, building up into a funeral pyre within his chest, Eagletalon began to fall into a fast trot that lasted for a few seconds, before he began to run. Unable to contain his emotions and walk at the same time, he let them fuel his steps rather than keep him padding stiffly back to camp.
After all, they didn't really have time to waste, now did they?

"Better you than me," She muttered under her breath, tail tip flicking. Though she felt like she had an decent amount of patience while training Granitepaw, her tolerance for unnecessary, mousebrained situations was considerably less. Chances were that Smokeface would end up throwing insults at her rather than listening to some very logical reasoning about why it was in StoneClan's best interest to drop her stupid feud, and in the process, not retain any of the information Hailstrike was trying to convey. Reasoning seemed like a hopeless endeavor to the she-cat, but perhaps Eagletalon would have better luck and success then she thought that she would have herself. Though if he does have to throttle some sense into her... She cut off that thought, nipping it at its root. No, you will not shred that she-cat. It will not help anything.
An ear flicked as Eagletalon began to veer off in the direction of one of StoneClan's best hunting spots, and she kept her path straight, fully intending to tell Fallingstar and Falconleap of their discoveries before going hunting. Finding a new medicine cat was by far a very important task, but so was alerting the leader and deputy to the current inter-clan situation; Hailstrike knew that if she started hunting, it would be a long time before she would be able to pull herself away from the task, and they may not have too much time left. Beside her, the tom seemed to be thinking along the same lines, for his hasty trot morphed into a straight run. Flying over the ground, nimble paws shifted their pace as their owner sped up to keep in stride with the warrior.
Hailstrike found that she enjoyed the speed of running, the feel of the wind through her fur. With this new awareness of time ticking away, the long strides gave her some comfort, for she could tell herself that they were getting jobs done in the short time they had. She could pretend to outrun the trouble, if she wanted to, and leave the forest and all duty and obligation behind. If she wanted to. Hailstrike was not that kind of cat, however, who shied away from any work; on the contrary, she embraced it, enjoying the sense of pride that came with serving StoneClan in the best way she could.
The familiar sight of the camp drew closer with every step, and she slowed her hasty run to a trot, before reducing her pace to a very brisk walk as she entered the area. Briefly, her blue eyed gaze focused on her companion before she turned it outward, scanning the camp for two very familiar figures.

| [atrb=width,390,true][bg=003333]Falconleap was truly a reliable deputy; Fallingstar would have probably been losing lives left and right if not for the she-cat watching out for her. The leader hadn't even noticed that she hadn't eaten since the previous day, but after her deputy's pressing, Fallingstar forced herself to choke down a mouse from the fresh-kill pile. Her stomach felt uncomfortably full, even after such a small portion, but it was likely due to the warrior's extremely poor eating habits.
Just as she was finishing her meal, the leader's ears pricked at the sound of her name. Fallingstar raised her head to see her brother and Hailstrike returning from patrol. Her eyes reflected curiosity, and Fallingstar greeter her warriors with a curt nod. It seemed as if they came bearing grave news, for Eagletalon had lost his usual air of cheeriness that she was so accustomed to. Even if the two were not on the same wavelength, the siblings were often able to detect changes within the other.
Eagletalon, though dense, had always noticed when she was troubled, and the leader reciprocated that sense. She waited to hear what the two cats had to say, casually glancing around to see if Falconleap was present close by. If so, the StoneClan leader would have liked to have the deputy by her side for something important.
